Judiciary leaves Bulldogs barking
By Brent Read
The Bulldogs' frustration with the judiciary intensified yesterday when prop Mark O'Meley reacted to Gold Coast half Scott Prince by declaring: "What's he going to do, throw a few dummies at me?"
The rugged O'Meley, suspended yesterday for one match after pleading guilty to dropping his knees on Prince on Sunday, was fuming at being rubbed out of Friday night's big game against South Sydney at Telstra Stadium.
His anger led to a dismissive jibe at Prince, who warned O'Meley of retribution immediately after Sunday's game.
"I don't know what he's talking about," O'Meley said.
"He usually plays in a dinner suit. What's he going to do, throw dummies at me?
"It's a bit hard to accept because there was no malice in it. It's an aggressive game. I didn't hurt anyone."
O'Meley's disappointment at being suspended was mirrored at his club yesterday.
Bulldogs officials were already exasperated with the system after fellow forward Sonny Bill Williams was suspended for two matches on a reckless high tackle charge following the opening game of the season.
The Dogs considered fighting both the O'Meley and Williams charges before entering guilty pleas to both.
Williams will make his return against the Rabbitohs but even that failed to pacify coach Steve Folkes, who was angry about the O'Meley decision.
"We thought there was a possibility that it was the wrong charge," Folkes said. "We're not saying he is innocent. It's just a little frustrating when you see things you think are more dangerous, and that are also illegal, and they get away scot free."
Folkes and O'Meley were both mystified at the failure to charge any player over the incident which led to North Queensland forward Carl Webb breaking his jaw on Saturday night.
Folkes also pinpointed two recent incidents of alleged eye gouges, both of which went no further than the match review committee.
"Carl Webb has a broken jaw and will miss two months when he got hit high in the head with a shoulder, which is not in the rules," Folkes said.
"It's just as bad as hitting him with a forearm. There's no charge there.
"You get two possible gouges which they don't even investigate. I just don't see any consistency there."
Match review commissioner Greg McCallum said he had looked at the tackle on Webb and deemed the Cowboys' forward was responsible for accidental contact with the shoulder of St George Illawarra's Justin Poore.
"Webb ran into his shoulder," McCallum said yesterday.
"He (Poore) didn't promote his shoulder. His arm was by his side. It was a complete accident."
McCallum decided not to press ahead with the gouging allegations because the players on the receiving end, North Queensland's Sione Faumuina and Wests Tigers' Keith Galloway, decided against making formal complaints.
Adding to the Bulldogs' anxiety, they will now face the in-form Rabbitohs without one of their genuine strike forwards, although Williams' return is considerable compensation.
Chris Armit moves into the starting side for O'Meley, who couldn't hide his disappointment at missing Friday night's game which is expected to attract a crowd of more than 30,000.
"That's what's hard about it, missing the Souths game," O'Meley said.
O'Meley's other concern is missing a chance to press his claims to play for Australia in the Anzac Test against New Zealand. The Australian

`Big Red' to be unleashed from Titans bench
By Pat McLeod
The Gold Coast Titans are about to unleash 'Big Red' back into the National Rugby League.
Off the Australian scene since 2004 Brad Meyers is set to be part of the Titans team to take on the Panthers at Penrith on Sunday.
Gold Coast coach John Cartwright yesterday named an extended 18-man squad that includes Meyers, however the red-headed, former international is expected to make his debut for the Titans off the bench.
The inclusion of Meyers, possibly at the expense of utility Josh Graham, is the only change to the side beaten 22-6 by the Bulldogs in Sydney last weekend.
Cartwright will not finalise his 17 until Friday with injury concerns hovering over Matt Hilder (shoulder), Jake Webster (knee) and Scott Prince (ankle).
However he did hint at a change to the starting 13. Although Cartwright would not be drawn on this, there is a strong push for the elevation of second rower Mark Minichiello from the bench.
At this stage the Coast's backline is unchanged with Cartwright resisting the temptation to rush injured points machine Chris Walker back into the team.
Meyers' introduction into the Gold Coast's rookie season has been delayed because of an ankle injury, however the power running former international is eager to create mid-field havoc on return.
"I just can't wait to get back," he said yesterday.
"I didn't come back to play Queensland Cup. The whole aim was to come back and play NRL and enjoy it this time around."
The Titans pack has not lacked commitment in their three outings so far this season but Cartwright will not be disappointed in the size and grunt that Meyers will add up front for the Coast.
The 186cm, 101kg forward burst on to the representative scene in only his second season in top grade for the Broncos in 2001.
For Brisbane, Queensland and Australia he hurt opposition defences with storming runs on the edge of the ruck.
After spending two seasons in England Meyers is determined to re-establish his reputation as one of the most damaging attacking forwards.
However he says this time around his aim is to enjoy his football more.
"I think maybe I put too much pressure on myself," he says of his later years with the Broncos, which did not live up to the early promise.
"Instead of doing the little things right on the field I was worried about everything."
Meyers came back from injury with a strong 60-minute stint on Sunday in the Queensland Cup with the Ipswich Jets, who are coached by former Bronco teammate Kevvie Walters.
Meyers said he was concerned about his ankle but came through untroubled.
Titans coaching staff have dismissed claims that their pack is too small.
Titans assistant coach Trevor Gillmeister says Meyers call-up was not because of his size, but because of other attributes he will bring to the squad.
"Size is not an issue for us. Turning the ball over has been," said Gillmeister. Gold Coast Bulletin

First League Mark Status Awarded
The North West Counties Youth 16/18s League is celebrating becoming the first organisation to attain League Mark status.
The award recognises competitions with solid structures in place and proper adherence to such as equal opportunities and child protection issues.
Enthused Chairman/Secretary Hilary Steel: "This could not have been achieved without the support and help of all the delegates to our meetings, all our coaches, players and volunteer helpers.
"We are proud at North West Counties Youth of our achievements over the seasons, and this one has been particularly successful. All seven of the divisions have been decided, but only at the very last minute for the two premier divisions.
"Two of our Under 16s teams, Blackbrook Royals and Wigan St Patricks, will meet in the National Cup Final - and between them they have at least 10 players who have signed professionally."
She added: "The Lancashire Cup Final at Under 16s saw a really exciting match when it went to extra time and then a golden point, when Latchford Albion Unicorns beat Blackbrook Royals by 16 points to 14. Latchford Albion have completed the season as winners of their division to add to a highly successful and satisfactory ending to our season." BARLA

Challenge Cup needs a facelift
By Ian Laybourn
The lop-sided results from the weekend's Challenge Cup ties will hasten changes to the competition's format.
Eight of the 16 fourth-round ties between Super League clubs and the part-timers from the National League produced embarrassing scorelines which damaged the credibility of the famous tournament, with the elite outfits averaging 69 points a match.
Only Castleford and Widnes emerged from the inter-divisional clashes with integrity after they pushed Bradford and Wigan all the way in fiercely competitive matches.
That will have come as no surprise since they look to be the two best teams in National League One by a country mile and it would be a surprise if they did not contest the October 7 Grand Final at Headingley.
Paltry attendances at the weekend's fourth-round ties proved that spectators will not pay to watch obvious mis-matches.
Gone are the days when the big clubs were filled with dread at the thought of playing a cup tie on the infamous slopes at Mount Pleasant and Crown Flatt or a trip into the hot-house atmosphere of Post Office Road.
The obvious solution is to delay the entry of the Super League clubs until the fifth round, which would currently mean the amateurs, National League clubs and French and Russian teams battling it out for four places in the last 16.
The move will considerably reduce the chances of the minnows landing money-spinning ties with the glamour clubs and probably lessen the tradition of rugby league's oldest knockout competition.
It will also most probably reduce the number of matches shown live on the BBC, unless the broadcaster opt to show the pick of the all-National League ties.
But three of the National League clubs certainly did little to help the cause of the underdogs by forfeiting home advantage in the fourth round.
Hunslet, London Skolars and Gateshead all had their reasons for switching their ties to the home of their Super League opponents but the moves went against the very essence of the cup and damaged the traditions which some might like to preserve.
Meanwhile, here are two good reasons to disregard comments made by coaches about referees, especially in the immediate post-match press conference.
My eyes tend to automatically glaze over when coaches start berating match officials. For one of them it comes across as sour grapes and, in any case, I have a lot of sympathy for the man in the middle who cannot please everybody.
Last Friday's post-match press conference at Odsal demonstrated perfectly just why such comments should be taken with a pinch of salt.
This is what (beaten) Castleford coach Terry Matterson had to say of referee Ashley Klein:
"I just felt that one side were allowed to lay all over the other and the other side got penalised."
And (victorious) Bradford coach Steve McNamara's commented:
"They laid all over us and they should have had a couple of our shirts on occasions, they were that far offside."
For what it's worth, I thought it was one of Klein's better games. But what do I know? Sporting Life

Telstra blows whistle on league partners
Telstra is suing its business partners, the Murdoch and Packer camps, in a messy battle over rugby league broadcasting rights.
Telstra claims Fox Sports, which is jointly owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp and James Packer's Publishing and Broadcasting Limited, has refused to stop making lengthy highlights available on its website and via mobile phone, breaching Telstra's $90 million six-year rights agreement with the NRL, Fairfax reports.
Telstra is seeking an urgent ruling from the Federal Court to restrict Fox Sports to using only limited footage for news reports, pending a full trial on the matter, according to its statement of claim lodged with the court on Tuesday.
Telstra said no more than 45 seconds of footage from each match should be shown as part of a news report and it should only be available for 24 hours from the end of a match. It is seeking unspecified damages for profits lost. NineMSN

Carnegie Challenge Cup fifth round
Leeds will host Wigan in the glamour tie of the fifth round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup.
The match is a repeat of the Wembley finals of 1994 and 1995, when Wigan triumphed on both occasions to extend their record winning run to eight.
There will be a dress rehearsal for the May showdown when the two teams meet in Super League at Headingley next Tuesday.
Holders St Helens, who ran in 78 points in their fourth-round tie against Batley, have been paired with more National League One opposition in Rochdale.
Super League leaders Bradford also face a cup dress rehearsal when they visit Wakefield on Easter Monday while the other all-Super League tie gives Salford the chance to avenge last year's quarter-final defeat by Huddersfield, who went on to reach the final.
Barrow and Sheffield Eagles can look forward to bumper pay days when they visit Warrington and Hull respectively, while Whitehaven's reward for a win over Halifax is a home tie with French outfit Catalans Dragons.
Wakefield coach John Kear, who guided Hull and Sheffield Eagles to shock victories in the Cup, has his sights set on a hat-trick of triumphs.
"With it being the first final at the new Wembley, it's an historic occasion and I like being involved in historic occasions so we'll be having a dabble," he said.
"Because of the way the draw panned out, there were bound to be some all-Super League clashes but the big plus for us is that we're at home and we've been displaying really good form at home."
Saints' odds for retaining their trophy have hardened at 6-4 with William Hill, who now make Hull the 4-1 second favourites.
Leeds, who are meeting Wigan for the first time in the Cup since winning a fourth-round tie 28-18 on their way to Wembley in 1999, are 9-2 third favourites.
The draw for the fifth round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup is:
Whitehaven v Catalans Dragons Warrington v Barrow Leeds v Wigan Hull v Sheffield Eagles Salford v Huddersfield St Helens v Rochdale Oldham v Harlequins Wakefield v Bradford.

Ambitious Lakers launch a British sporting first
Ambitious Co-Operative National League One club, Doncaster Lakers, have further signalled their intentions of securing a 2009 Super League franchise place by launching a British sporting first.
The "Lakers Owners Club" concept will see the South Yorkshire-based outfit offer fans the opportunity to purchase shares in the club as well as a share in the 25-year license agreement of the £32m, world-class Keepmoat Stadium.
Lakers Chairman, John Wright said:
"I'm absolutely delighted to be able to finally reward our genuinely loyal fan base with the opportunity to have a share in the club. The Owners Club Share Issue will essentially give the club back to the people in a way everyone can afford and provide a vital injection of capital which will significantly assist us in our Super League franchise bid."
In order to comply with stringent revenue-based criteria laid out by the RFL/Super League, the Lakers are seeking to raise a minimum of £500,000 over the next two years to support their bid. Whilst many sporting ventures have previously sought donations, none have offered fans the opportunity to own a part of the club and stadium lease itself.
Wright continued:
"We are all too well aware of the way clubs sometimes ask fans to continually dip into their pockets with little in the way of reward or a thank you; so the Owners Club concept actually offers a great investment opportunity for anyone and everyone to own a part of a brand that we believe will become the biggest in the game. I would like to think that Doncaster businesses both large and small will buy some shares in the club as well as supporters"."
"One only has to look at share issues at football clubs 20-plus years ago which were sold for relatively small amounts and compare them to their 2007 value. Anyone lucky enough to have invested in a club back then will now be both particularly wealthy and proud that their contribution to the club helped them grow to their current levels"
The ground-breaking Owners Club follows hot on the heels of the recently launched Lakers Foundation, a registered charity which enables the club to deliver their renowned Community Development Programme aimed at increasing grassroots participation and providing healthy lifestyle messages to people of all ages in South Yorkshire.
Wright concluded:
"I've had a great 7 years at the club and I've seen it go through some major changes. I truly believe that the transformation we have undertaken off the field has created a genuine sellable product which has great value for fans, investors and businesses. We now need to generate a turnover of £1million and the Owners Club share issue is a key part of the target we are looking to achieve in order to secure a Super League franchise spot."
"Everybody in rugby league is talking about us in a very positive way so it really is a perfect time to invest in the Lakers club as we continue to literally make ourselves, The People's Club."
Fans, businesses and interested parties may invest in the Owners Club by contacting the Lakers Office on 01302 360960 or emailing info@...
The self-styled "Peoples Club" also recently signalled their intention to apply for Super League status for the 2009 season which requires all professional clubs in Rugby League with ambitions of Super League status to present their business model for inclusion in the games elite division.
The £32m Keepmoat Stadium will host it's first Co-Operative National League One game on Thursday 12th April as the Lakers entertain rugby league giants Castleford Tigers. Doncaster Online

Australian Indigenous under 16's
Seven Queenslanders have been named in the Australian Indigenous Under 16s to play New Zealand Maori Under 16s as a curtain-raiser to the April 20 Test at Suncorp Stadium.
Despite losing 34-14 to New South Wales Kooris in the Indigenous Challenge, the Queensland Murris also provided the team vice-captain in lock Casey Fraser.
Powerfully-built Fraser turned heads in the match against New South Wales, displaying a steely determination to match his athletic ability.
The shaggy-haired forward scored an impressive solo try and drove back the opposition in defence to earn the Queensland Players' Player award.
From Nanango in the South Burnett region, Fraser plays for Stanley Rivers in the Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby League.
Murris coach Tony Currie revealed that a handful of player managers had contacted him after the interstate match to discuss Fraser and his future.
Other Queenslanders pushing their way into the national side were Lyndon Law, Ricky Barber, Leon Taylor, Dane Gagai, Jack Warwick and Robert McLeod.
The Australians are to be led by five-eighth Albert Kelly, another raw and impressive talent from Kempsey in New South Wales. Kelly had several neat touches for the Kooris and produced the run of the match in the second half to set up teammate William Beale for a trial.
The Australian Indigenous Under 16s will assemble in Brisbane on Tuesday April 17, to be coached by former Gold Coast Giants player Scott Mieni.
Kick-off in the Indigenous 16s v Maori 16s will be at 4.30pm on April 20, followed by Australia v New Zealand Combined Services at 5.50pm and then the Australian Kangaroos v New Zealand Kiwis Test at 7.35pm.

Changes made to 'embarrassing' Sharks
Cronulla coach Ricky Stuart has reacted to his side's disappointing loss to South Sydney by dumping Queensland centre Josh Hannay and demoting representative prop Ben Ross to the bench for Monday's clash with St George Illawarra.
Stuart, who said his team had been left "embarrassed" after their 26-16 loss to the Rabbitohs last Saturday, has named former Brisbane halfback Brett Seymour to make his Sharks debut at five-eighth as part of a backline reshuffle for the grudge match against the Dragons.
Brett Kearney moves from pivot to fullback, with David Simmons shifting to the wing and Ben Pomeroy coming into the centres after recovering from a hip injury.
NSW backrower Paul Gallen has also been named on an extended five-man bench to make his return from injury, but five-eighth Adam Dykes has again been ruled out with a foot injury.
The Dragons have named twins Brett and John Morris for the Easter Monday match at Toyota Park.
The sons of former Dragons star Steve "Slippery" Morris, they are just the third set of twins to play first grade rugby league together.
Brett returns to the team at fullback after missing the past fortnight with a broken thumb, with Josh shifting to the wing and former Shark Luke MacDougall moving to the centres.
"We have played all our rugby league together over the years and to be able to do it together at the highest level is really exciting," said Brett. Yahoo Sport

Defence
By Glenn Bayliss - Level 3 ARL Coach
For a team to have a formidable defence, the defence must be "proactive" not "reactive".
That is, ensure that the team "controls" the opposition when they have possession of the football instead of reacting to what the opposition does in attack.
Remember, the opposition will have the football for about 50% of the game. What they do with it in that time is up to the defence!
The basis of defence can be narrowed to four main principles.
1. Exert Pressure Limit the time, space and therefore the options of the attacking team.
2. Gain Ground A quick moving defensive line that exerts pressure can often stop the attacking team from gaining the "advantage line". The loss of ground while in attack can have a demoralising effect on the defence.
3. Win Possession The old adage "you can't score without the football" sums up the third principle. Strong effective tackling coupled with applied pressure will achieve a higher turnover rate of possession.
If your team can limit the time the opposition spends with the football it will go along way towards boosting your chances of winning.
4. Physically Dominate the Opposition If you are coaching teams "international rules" this principle comes into being. Rugby League is a game of strong physical contact.
Quite often a defence that is "physical", i.e. powerful driving tackles that stop attackers "in their tracks", can have a marked impact on a game.
If opponents are concerned by the fact they are to be solidly tackled a further mental "pressure" can be placed on their game leading to increased mistakes/ hesitancy, turnover of the football.
It must be stressed that your "physical" defence doesn't "cross the line" and become illegal play.
This can lead to unwanted penalties and put the football back in your opponent's hands more often.
1. Individual Tackling Skill For a defence to be effective each player in your team must be competent in tackling skill. As a coach it is important to concentrate........
