Wayne Bennett Did Not Want To Talk About It

By Gary Roberts RLCM

Wayne Bennett did not want to talk about it. Matthew Elliott said that he would accept the two points. [Click
RLCMtv to view]

Friday night's game at Suncorp was possibly one of the worst games technical performance of rugby league since the new stadium opened.

The first half showed:

7 penalties and 23 knock-ons.

The Broncos were only able to get into the opposition's half four times due to their own ability, but six times through errors from Penrith allowed the Broncos to restart in the visitor's territory.

The Broncos had the ball on 21 occasions in the first half.

However, five times they either knocked it on in their own half or could not get to the 50m for their kick.

Five times they had positive plays to come from their own 30m to get over the 50m.

Five penalties were received - three from within their own 30m for kicks giving restarts in Penrith's end of the field. The other two penalties gave them two successful goal kicks.

Two tries were scored, both from errors by Penrith in their red zone.

Two penalty goal kicks were successful, both from errors by Penrith in their red zone.

One penalty was conceded.

One pass was intercepted on the 85m.

Penrith received two penalties during this first half.

The score at half time was Penrith 20 Broncos 16.

The second half resulted in four penalties and 13 knock-ons.

Penrith won the game in extra time 29 to 28 after the Broncos led 28 to 20 midway through the second half.

But let us go back to the first half and have a further look at the Brisbane Broncos, remembering that they are the NRL reigning premiers.

After the first 26 sets [24 minutes]: The Broncos had the ball 16 times to Penrith's 10.

Penalties at this point: Broncos five - Penrith one.

Score: Broncos eight - Penrith six.

After 40 sets [40 minutes]: The Broncos had the ball 21 times to Penrith's 19.

Penalties at this point: Broncos five - Penrith two.

Score: Broncos 14 - Penrith 20.

Can it be asserted that the penalties and errors from Penrith kept the Broncos in the game?

Penrith's errors resulted in successful penalty goal kicks for the Broncos in sets two and five and the Broncos two tries came off errors by Penrith again in set 24 with a knock-on, play four, on their 15m, and in set 31 when Penrith again knocked-on, play one, on their 10m.

All the above is well documented and was witnessed by the crowd at the game of 25,582 plus thousands of TV viewers.

But where is the problem the Broncos have? They are zero after three games. I was critical of them early season last year. Is this a similar start?

They do appear to have a problem coming out of their own end.

In there possibly lies an answer as to why the Broncos are struggling to date. Wayne Bennett does not want to talk about it. [Click here for
RLCMtv]

Penrith did not have a problem coming out of their end. Of the 42 sets they had the ball, they came from their own end to over the 50m on 21 occasions. Their problem was ball control.

Watching the game on replay, it can be seen how the Broncos are running to the outside of the defending player at the point of collision. Then the next play they are doing it again. Too many of these 'overs', to use the game's terminology, do not work. [Click to see
video of Set 10]

Penrith, on the other hand, at the point of collision are playing to the inside.

Hannant plays that style. Petro and Thorn play straight and hard but take the tackle and have limited offload ability. They are easy to defend against as the opposition knows what to expect from them and they are slow on the ground.

Thaiday looks to bust the line but rarely does due to his little step before collision.

The balance of the team all play to the outside, Brent Tate being the worst offender when he is first or second receiver in the Broncos' 'red zone'.

The Broncos, when in their own end with the ball, on numerous occasions give the opposition one positive play because they do not go forward. They stay in the same position, but are one play less in their set.

The Broncos, in set 26 of the first half, played exceptionally well. This was possibly the best they have played as a team this year as they executed well constructed plays from their in-goal area.

If someone talks about what is wrong and works on how to play more like set 26, the Broncos will quickly improve on their current position.

Penrith 29 defeated Broncos 28 [extra time]. RLCM Online

Doncaster Lakers suspend head coach Kieran Dempsey

Doncaster have suspended head coach Kieran Dempsey just five days before the start of their National League campaign.

The Lakers said Dempsey and his assistant Phil Windley have been asked to step aside pending an investigation, and have placed former Hull KR and Sheffield Eagles coach Gary Wilkinson in temporary charge.

Doncaster, who officially launched their bid for a Super League franchise in 2009 on Friday, have declined to elaborate on the reasons for the shock development.

The Lakers could now be looking for their fourth coach in 16 months.

Tony Miller was appointed following the sudden death of St John Ellis on New Year's Eve in 1994 but he was sacked last July.

Australian Dempsey, 40, was appointed full-time head coach on a two-year contract last August but Doncaster failed to reach the knockout stages of the Northern Rail Cup after winning just one of their six group games. Sporting Life

Broncos face Bennett's wrath

By Greg Davis

Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett will unleash his fury on Broncos players this morning after the club on Friday night crashed to its worst season start in eight years.

A livid Bennett did not say a word to his players after the gut-wrenching 29-28 extra-time loss to Penrith on Friday night, which saw the Broncos self-destruct to blow an eight-point lead with three minutes left on the clock.

The dramatic collapse plunged the Broncos to their gloomiest start since 1999, when Brisbane lost its first five matches in a horror run that saw club legend Allan Langer retire eight weeks into the season.

The Broncos will train at Red Hill at 9.30am today and Bennett is certain to read the riot act to the downcast Brisbane squad that trudged out of Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.

Even four-try hero Justin Hodges won't escape Bennett's wrath as it was the Test centre's ill-fated grubber kick in the 77th minute that opened the door for Penrith's stunning comeback.

However, Bennett could also find himself in hot water.

The six-time premiership winner appeared only briefly and early at the post-match press conference, dodging the majority of journalists covering the game.

He was almost shaking with rage as he told the few reporters present to hurry up and ask questions or "I'm out of here".

Bennett then uttered just 51 words in response to queries before disappearing to the Brisbane sheds.

The National Rugby League yesterday said it would investigate Bennett's cameo appearance at the press conference to see if he had breached media guidelines.

An NRL spokesman said the incident featured in the ground manager's official report and would be reviewed as part of the governing body's weekly review of football operations.

Bennett will probably escape a fine as the regulations stipulate that "the media conference will be held as soon as possible after the final whistle and no later than 15 minutes after the completion of play".

However, the NRL will still take a dim view of his actions as it was not in the spirit of post-match protocol.

Meanwhile, Broncos forward Dane Carlaw said the Brisbane players were "gutted".

"It's heartbreaking to lose like that after you've done all the hard work . . . it's very frustrating," Carlaw said after Brisbane's recovery session yesterday.

"Our ball control is just killing us. We put the effort in but we played like we were chasing points at the end when we didn't have to.

"Wayne didn't have to say anything to us. To lead by eight points with just a few minutes left and still lose left everybody pretty gutted."

Clive Churchill medallist Shaun Berrigan said Brisbane only had itself to blame but the Broncos had to remain upbeat to get the season back on track on Friday night against the Roosters in Sydney.

"We just have to stay positive and keep toiling away," Berrigan said after the match.

"We did a few things right but we did a few things wrong too and we just have to get that ball control right and hopefully we can get a win.

"We were certainly in control of our own destiny but we just did things we shouldn't have when it counted."

Broncos medical staff examined skipper Darren Lockyer and Hodges at the recovery session yesterday after the Tests stars were both under injury clouds going into the match.

But club officials said there was no significant injuries to come out of the clash. Courier Mail

Challenge Cup 5th Round - Wigan overpower battling Widnes

Wigan reached the fifth round of the Challenge Cup after a spurt of four tries in the last 15 minutes sealed a 34-24 victory over spirited Widnes.

National League One side Widnes had led 12-10 after 61 minutes thanks to tries from Toa Kohe-Love and Scott Grix.

But any hopes of a shock were ended when Pat Richards (twice), Darrell Goulding and Trent Barrett crossed in a blistering seven-minute spell.

Jordan James and Paul Noone scored late on for Widnes but it was too late.

"It was every bit as tough as I expected it to be," said Wigan head coach Brian Noble.

"They ran us all the way but we managed to come up with a second-half performance that eased us away from danger.

"We had a chat at half-time and we were a whole lot more determined in the second half."

Widnes coach Steve McCormack was delighted with his own team's battling display.

"It was a great effort and I am very proud of them all," he said. "In the first half we competed really well.

"All credit to Wigan in the second half, we could not live with them. They finished off every chance they got and in cup games you've got to do that.

"An upset was on the cards but we knew that we would have to concentrate for the full 80 minutes with the quality of players Wigan have and we had a few lapses."

Huddersfield, struggling at the foot of the Super League table, thrashed York 74-4 with the help of a hat-trick from second rower Steve Snitch.

The Giants, last year's beaten finalists, scored a total of 13 tries as they claimed their first win of the season.

Hull had little trouble in reaching the next round after running in 14 unanswered tries in the 78-0 win against part-time side Hunslet Hawks at the KC Stadium.

Hunslet, who had conceded home advantage for the tie, never threatened to cause an upset from the moment Kirk Yeaman opened the scoring in the sixth minute.

Wing Chris Hall, 19, had a debut to remember with a personal haul of 34 points, including a hat-trick of tries.

Hull are struggling in Super League this season and coach Peter Sharp said: "Hopefully we'll run in a little bit of confidence.

"We played some pretty good patches of rugby in places and I'm sure the boys will take a lot of confidence out of it.

"It was enjoyable. The Challenge Cup is a marvellous competition and we're just glad to be in it."

In other games, Wakefield ran in 11 tries as they defeated League Two side London Skolars 52-4.

Keighley Cougars failed in their bid to reach the fifth-round draw for the first time in 10 years when they lost 26-16 to League Two rivals Oldham.

Barrow cruised to a convincing 47-14 victory over Swinton while Sheffield scored seven tries in the 46-28 win over Dewsbury.

Rochdale Hornets continued their winning run over the Celtic Crusaders thanks to a tense 20-16 result at Spotland.

Whitehaven also progressed with a 36-8 triumph against League One rivals Halifax.  BBC Sport

Roosters hit rock bottom against Manly

Sydney Roosters coach Chris Anderson has accused his side of throwing in the towel after conceding four tries in the final 25 minutes of Sunday's 30-8 NRL loss to Manly.

Anderson pulled no punches post-match, describing his side's second half performance as "diabolical" as an understrength Manly came from 8-6 behind to blow away the winless Roosters at Aussie Stadium.

Despite playing perhaps their best half of football this season, Anderson said the Roosters could not "bull***t" themselves into thinking the effort was anything close to acceptable.

"We're as low as we can go now ... this is as bad as it gets," said Anderson, who admitted he was perhaps a little "off the pace" in his return to NRL coaching after a three-year absence.

"As a group, we've got to decide where to go, one way or the other, up or down.

"We've got a bit of soul searching to do over the next couple of days. We've got a short turnaround before Brisbane (on Friday), which is probably a good thing.

"Our effort in the second half was diabolical ... once we gave them that try to the fullback (Brett Stewart in the 55th minute) we just put our hands up.

"It's not a good thing for a group of players to do. Whether they've done it before, I don't know, but what we won't do is do it again. It was a fairly diabolical capitulation I thought."

Roosters skipper Craig Fitzgibbon said the players had no excuses.

"The truth hurts doesn't it?," he said.

"Blind Freddie could see that we dropped our heads after that try and they went over the top of us. We could sugar coat it ... but the honest truth is we didn't put in a big enough fight."

With the Sea Eagles missing injured trio Matt Orford, Steve Menzies and Steve Matai, Anderson believed the Roosters had a good chance to break their season duck and claim the club's 1000th premiership victory.

They looked on track leading 8-6 early in the second half.

But Stewart's second try of the game, from a Brent Kite offload, effectively ended the contest as Roosters fans in the 11,976 strong crowd began filing out of the stadium well before fulltime.

Backrower Anthony Watmough, interchange forward Glen Hall and five-eighth Travis Burns all crossed for tries in the last 20 minutes.

Halfback Michael Monaghan was again strong for Manly, putting pressure on Orford to reclaim his position when he returns from a knee injury.

Despite trailing early in the second half, Manly captain Kite said his team always felt they would finish the stronger.

"They were leading in the second half, but we knew we had the ability to go up a gear," Kite said.

"We knew if we just kept going with them, and matched their enthusiasm, we'd get the better of them, without sounding too arrogant."

Orford and Menzies are expected back for the unbeaten Sea Eagles next week, with Matai still likely two more weeks away.

Roosters youngster Mitchell Aubusson scored his first NRL try, with 17-year-old halfback Mitchell Pearce showing promise.

The Roosters have scored just three tries in their opening three games, while conceding 91 points. After claiming win No.999 in August last year, they have gone nearly eight months searching for their 1000th victory. Yahoo Sport

Tame Tupou roasted by Broncos coach

Red-faced New Zealand international Tame Tupou has felt the wrath of Broncos coach Wayne Bennett and club management, angered by reports the Kiwi winger is ready to leave Brisbane.

Tupou's manager Gavin Orr lit the fuse with his "play him or he'll pack his bags" ultimatum the day after Brisbane slumped to their third straight loss - a 29-28 golden-point surrender to Penrith at Suncorp Stadium.

But Tupou, who hasn't played an NRL game in 2007 despite the club's worse start to a premiership season in eight years, was asked for a "please explain" by Bennett and then football manager Andrew Gee.

"You like those things to be handled behind closed doors and as a club we knew nothing about it," a disappointed Gee said.

"To tell you the truth, the only dealings I've had with Tame have been with Chris Orr and suddenly Gavin Orr is his manager today, so it's a surprise to me.

"You'd like to think if the reports are true, the player would come to you first (not the media).

Tupou was not quoted in the story.

But Orr said the giant Kiwi winger, who made his Test debut last year, was "unhappy" at the club and did not want to play out the season in the Queensland Cup.

"I've spoken to him and he isn't happy," said Orr, adding Tupou had already attracted interest from European Super League clubs.

"He's a Test player running around in the Queensland Cup.

"Unless he can get a go in first-grade, we will be asking for a release and we will look at going to England."

After missing last year's grand final, Tupou was beaten for a wing spot by Darius Boyd and Steve Michaels for the opening game of the 2007 NRL season against the Cowboys.

Michaels outplayed him in the trials and beat him for a spot on the wing for last month's World Club Challenge final loss to English Super League champions St Helens and Tupou has been playing in the Queensland Cup since.

Tupou didn't help his case turning up late for a team meeting in Melbourne last month and also returning from the off-season a little behind his teammates in condition.

Tupou seemed surprised when asked about the newspaper report.

"I didn't know anything about it until Hodgo (teammate Justin Hodges) told me about it," said Tupou before disappearing behind closed doors to be hauled over the coals by an unimpressed Bennett.

Brisbane chief executive Bruno Cullen said he was unaware Tupou was unhappy.

"We took him to the World Club Challenge but his form there and in other trials wasn't that hot and there were a couple of disciplinary breaches which meant he wasn't going to be considered for the first few games," said Cullen.

While Cullen said he'd be reluctant to release Tupou, he said it was not entirely out of the question.

"With injuries we're not in a handsome position at the moment," he said.

"(But) If the guy doesn't want to be here and he doesn't want to be around the joint, you think 'why bother'."

Broncos interchange blunder

Meanwhile, Gee said Brisbane would cop whatever punishment the NRL meted out for its interchange blunder in extra-time when Brad Thorn replaced injured prop Petero Civoniceva (head cut) without notifying the interchange official.

The error, which Gee said came in the confusion of a drama-charged finish, could have cost Brisbane two premiership points had they won.

They are likely to receive a fine or a reprimand from the NRL after admitting to the error after the game. Yahoo Sport
Bulldogs 22 defeated Titans 6

The Bulldogs have ended their winless start to the 2007 season with a convincing 16-point victory over the Gold Coast Titans in their round three NRL match at Sydney's Olympic stadium this afternoon.

Trent Cutler used his speed and footwork out wide to grab a double for the Bulldogs, while Mark O'Meley led from the front with a dominant display that included 13 hit-ups, 20 tackles and a try in the 22-6 win.

Unpredictable centre Willie Tonga (32nd minute) scored the only other try for the home side, while goal-kicking magician Hazem El Masri slotted home three conversions from four attempts, missing once from the sideline to arrest his unbeaten run of 29 successful goals.

The Titans, buoyant from a come-from-behind victory last round over the Cronulla Sharks, never troubled the Bulldogs as they struggled to make the most of their possession with the football, also letting in 27 missed tackles and making 12 handling errors in a mistake-ridden performance.

Gold Coast's only score came courtesy of a 22nd minute penalty goal from dynamic full-back Preston Campbell, with Matt Peterson picking up the crumbs on the flanks to score a consolation try late in the piece.

Earlier, the Bulldogs took a 6-2 lead into the half-time break after a hollow first period with neither side stamping their authority on the match despite Tonga's try.

Cutler made a positive start to the second stanza when he showed a good turn of pace to finish off in the corner after good lead-up work from Ben Roberts, Andrew Ryan and Tonga.

O'Meley crashed over on 60 minutes when he ran onto a shortball from Roberts close to the line to score virtually untouched, giving El Masri an easy conversion assignment to go ahead 16-2 with 19 minutes remaining.

Cutler's second came about in similar fashion, this time using his footwork with a left-foot step that had the Titans back-pedalling before he put his down to burrow over the line. Yahoo Online

Storm score 30-12 victory over Warriors

Billy Slater shook off the flu and a bad case of nerves to score two tries and steer unbeaten Melbourne to an impressive 30-12 win over the New Zealand Warriors.

After spending half the NRL season on the sidelines due to suspension last year and with the Storm boasting the best backline talent in the competition, Slater said he'd been feeling the pressure.

But showing his champion qualities, Slater shrugged off his poor preparation to deliver a starring performance at fullback for the Storm at Olympic Park.

He had great support - from a tireless pack who were in the face of Warriors' skipper Steve Price and fellow prop Ruben Wiki all day - and an electric backline, with teenager Israel Folau also collecting a tryscoring double to bring his tally to five in his debut NRL season.

And in further good news, gun five-eighth Greg Inglis was cleared of an ankle injury, with club officials saying he left the field late in the match as a precautionary measure.

"As well as the suspensions there's a lot of pressure on every player at the club, we've got a great squad and someone like Steve Turner's playing reserve grade," Slater said.

"Going into this year I probably wasn't real confident but you make a couple of line-breaks and it can change your mindset.

"I was really worrying about the games, thinking about them too much but after you get a try you get some confidence."

It only took four minutes for Slater to build some confidence as centre Matt King drew two defenders to allow him to touch down.

He was rewarded with a second-half four-pointer, while video referee Chris Ward ruled against him in two others.

The first of those was classic Slater as he raced through to collect a Cooper Cronk kick and charged to the line.

But Ward ruled Storm second-rower Dallas Johnson had encroached inside the 10m.

The Storm raced to a 10-0 lead within eight minutes after winger Folau's try, which came off a long Slater pass.

Second-rower Ryan Hoffman scored to extend that to 14-0 and Warriors coach Ivan Cleary said the Storm "smelt blood".

Before the match the Warriors were unbeaten, while they were the only side to beat Melbourne at home last season.

But the Storm were determined to get off to a good start and did just that, while their defence was equally impressive.

"They started a bit better than we did and smelled blood," Cleary said.

"I think we were still a bit rattled from the start.

"We gave them too much confidence too early."

The Warriors fought back from the 14-0 halftime deficit with tries to winger Manu Vatuvei and reserve Sam Rapira, however the Storm had already crossed for their fourth and fifth tries, through Folau and King before Slater capped off the day with his second. Yahoo Sport Online

Sharks Go Down To Brothers

The Green Steel Fitzroy Gracemere Sharks have put in a poor second half display to be defeated 44-16 in round 4 of the Rockhampton Local Competition at Victoria Park on Sunday April 1.

The Sharks started poorly but scored three tries in the final ten minutes of the first half to trail 18-16 at the break. A poor completition rate in the second half turned over far too much ball which allowed Brothers to run in 26 unanwsered points.

The Sharks were not aided by the controversial sin binning of hooker Chris Littleboy however their as no excuse for the Sharks turning the ball over constantly.

Captain Toby Wallace was by far the best player for the greens tackling all day and doing everything he could to lift his team and was rewarded for it at fulltime recieving the Players' Player award.

Prop Bill Weder and second rowers Jeff Cranston and Steve Tapau were both solid as was Kym Busch off the bench.

One shining light for the Sharks was the debut of 17-year-old Caleb
Littleboy. Younger brother of hooker Chris, Caleb played well in his first top grade showing and a long with players like Willie Munns and his brother are the stars of the future.

The Sharks now must regroup over the Easter break and return on Sunday, April 15 against Norths Chargers at Saleyards Park in the annual clash for the John Jarro Shield which has never been won by the greens.

Raven continue on the learning curve

Kent Ravens 20 vs. 78 South London Storm

The Kent Ravens continued on the learning curve as they took on national champions and fellow conference Premier club; South London Storm at Acacia Hall.

The home side stunned the visitor within the opening minute of the match with a powerful burst and try from in-form prop Paul Hyder but the first half quickly turned in favour of Storm who ran in 50 points to 6 up at half time.

The second half was a different story, as head coach Glenn Tyreman rallied his players up to perorm a respectable 24-14 score line in the second half, with debutant Oliver Slowe bagging a try for the Ravens with a series of side steps while Ewen Drummond and Thomas Claridge added the extra points.

Though the visits went away with a 78-20 win over the Ravens in their penultimate pre-season friendly of the season.

This is now the perfect time to join the Kent Ravens as the Juniors look to regroup over the easter break, the men prepare for the last friendly on the 15th of April and the women's squad start training on the 11th.

If you are interested in playing or volunteering (all ages are welcome) even if you have no experience; it is great fun with also the chance for players to work through representative honours too.

Qld v NSW Interstate Tertiary Match Report

UP TO a dozen Queenslanders are tipped to be named in the
Australian Universities tour of Great Britain after the
Maroons stormed from behind to defeat New South Wales
Universities 31-20 in Brisbane on Saturday.

Down 16-10 at halftime after a poorly disciplined opening
half, the Queenslanders finished full of running, winger Cody
Gray scoring a hat-trick in the spirited comeback.

Gray, a Wynnum Manly colts player fresh out of St Brendan's
College Yeppoon, should have the inside running for at least
one place in the Australian squad named later tonight.

Others nominated by Queensland coach Paul Srama to make the
national team include Central Comets forward Kane Hardy,
Burleigh Bears speedster Liam Capewell and five-eighth Shane
Beldham.

"Kane and Shane were instrumental in the comeback and they
gave us the composure needed after a pretty poor start," said
Srama, a former Ipswich Jets coach and boxing opponent of
Solomon Haumano.

"Then there's Liam.he didn't get as many opportunities as he
should have, but he shone each time he touched the ball. He
was a class above the rest out there."

Indeed Capewell, a former Queensland Under 19s
representative, should add another dimension to the Aussies
when they battle for the Academic Ashes in July.

Among others, props Rod Habben and Daniel Exintaris also
impressed before a larger than expected crowd at Davies Park,
West End.

The victory brought a sense of revenge to Queensland
Universities, who were defeated last year in the same contest.

QUEENSLAND UNIVERSITIES 31 (Cody Gray 3, Liam Capewell, Kane
Hardy, Rhys Appo tries; Dallas Williams 3 goals; Adam Lennan
field goal) d NEW SOUTH WALES UNIVERSITIES 20 (Yoni
Charlupski 2, Jamen McCleod, Joe Naddeff tries; Jamen
McCleod, Gavin Duncan goals) at Davies Park.

Carnegie Challenge Cup

Warrington 38 defeated Hull KR 10

Warrington avenged last year's shock loss to Hull KR as they claimed a place in the Carnegie Challenge Cup fifth round with a 38-10 triumph.

The Wolves were stunned by then National League Rovers in the quarter-finals in 2006 but there was to be no repeat at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Stuart Reardon touched down just before half-time to give the Wolves a lead they never relinquished and two-try Vinnie Anderson, Chris Bridge, Brent Grose and Paul Rauhihi made the game safe.

It was the Wolves' second win over the Robins in a fortnight following their Super League victory at the same ground.

Harlequins 64 defeated Pia 8

Harlequins romped to a morale-boosting 64-8 victory over French champions Pia.

The Londoners went into the match in south-west France on the back of four consecutive defeats but they never looked in danger of making it five against limited opponents.

Prop Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook led the way with a second-half hat-trick as the Super League strugglers cut loose with 11 tries in all.

Catalans Dragons also eased to victory, thrashing Featherstone 70-12.

The Perpignan-based side weathered the visitors' early storm before cruising to a 12-try win.

Adam Mogg and Cyril Gossard claimed a brace each, with Thomas Bosc landing 11 kicks as well as crossing himself.

Remi Casty, Vincent Duport, David Ferriol, Adel Fellous, Alex Chan, Andrew Bentley and Younes Khattabi were their other tryscorers, while Scott Glasell and Steve Dooler made sure they enjoyed the trip with tries for the English side. Sporting Life

Rabbitohs win third straight NRL match

Former Cronulla hero David Peachey has made a triumphant return to Toyota Park as South Sydney completed their best start to a season in 35 years with a convincing 26-16 NRL win over the Sharks.

Cronulla coach Ricky Stuart admitted his team had been left "embarrassed" by their performance as the Rabbitohs rarely looked threatened in scoring five tries to three and claiming their third straight win to open their NRL campaign.

It is the Rabbitohs best start to a season since 1972, with Peachey declaring "something special was brewing" at the Bunnies in 2007.

The mercurial fullback, who spent 12 seasons with the Sharks before being discarded in 2005, scored Souths' opening try, threw the final pass in another, and provided some fantastic hits in defence in a five-star performance against his former club.

He was one of six former Sharks in the Bunnies line-up - including two-try hero Nathan Merritt - who came back to haunt Cronulla.

Souths coach Jason Taylor said Peachey was fired up for a big game, but the man himself claimed he had been determined not to let emotion take over.

"Being a longstanding player here and part of the dream team, I tried not to let my emotion get caught up in it," said Peachey.

"I really enjoyed walking in here tonight, there was a lot of support from both sides ... it was something special for me to come back, and all I wanted to do was to come out here and perform to the best of my ability."

With a crowd of more than 17,000 at the game, Stuart blasted his team for conceding four soft tries, including two in the first half where Souths prop Peter Cusack and Merritt both slipped through some woeful defence in the middle of the ruck.

"It's disappointing because we had a big crowd here tonight and we're about playing to make our supporters proud about following the footy team," Stuart fumed.

"But tonight I think we were quite embarrassing. I feel embarrassed ... we spoke about it in the changerooms and we all feel embarrassed about the way we played ... we're all very disappointed with the outcome."

Souths led 16-0 after 19 minutes, and then 20-4 at the break, before keeping the Sharks at arms length in a scrappy second half.

The Bunnies' final two tries in the first half were the highlight.

The first saw skipper and prop Cusack bust through some timid Cronulla defence, bulldoze 45 metres downfield before passing to Peachey, who somehow managed to find hooker Daniel Irvine in a sea of Sharks jerseys to score.

Not to be outdone, flying winger Merritt scored his second try with a superb 80 metre solo effort, darting out from dummy half on his own 20m line before slipping through the Sharks defensive line and then outsprinting fullback David Simmons to the line.

After scoring his second double in as many weeks, coach Taylor and Peachey both said 23-year-old Merritt, who topped the tryscorers list last year, would not look out of place at representative level this season. Yahoo Sport

Cowboys hold off fast-finishing Dragons

North Queensland halfback Johnathan Thurston put on a performance worthy of the tag as the hottest player in the game in Saturday's 22-18 NRL win over St George Illawarra.

However, the Cowboys may have paid a heavy price for the victory, with Queensland Origin prop Carl Webb taken from the field early in the game suffering a suspected broken jaw.

"I'm not sure how it happened but it looks like he's got a broken jaw which is a massive blow for him and us," Cowboys coach Graham Murray said.

"He's been in great form and I really feel sorry for the bloke, I know the effort he's put in in the off-season, he's devastated at the moment."

The in-form enforcer, who was making strong claims for a place in the Australian side for the Anzac Test, now faces a likely 6-8 weeks on the sideline.

The injury took the gloss of another stunning Thurston performance, though the Test halfback nearly went from hero to zero when the Dragons launched an unlikely late charge while he was in the sin bin.

The Cowboys were up 22-0 when Thurston was binned in the 63rd minute for holding down Sam Isemonger, and the Dragons took advantage with young gun Richie Williams crossing twice before Luke MacDougall went over with three minutes remaining to cut the margin to just four points.

"I was a little disappointed that I put myself in that position but I'll learn from that," Thurston said.

"All I could hear was the crowd ... our 18th man came in and I asked him (what was going on), that was when they scored their first try."

Despite the binning, Murray heaped praise on his gun playmaker, who scored one try and played a leading role in the other three.

"He came up with the big plays on very important occasions," Murray said.

"That's what you need, your No.7 to be at the hub of everything that you do and he was.

"He knows what he's doing out there, it helps the coach I tell you."

The Thurston show kicked into gear after only four minutes when he jinked his way over from close range, before he turned provider with a grubber for Ashley Graham to cross out wide to make it 10-0 after as many minutes.

Having tortured the Dragons' right side defence, Thurston showed he was a sharing type of guy as he turned his attention to the left with a chip kick for Brenton Bowen to go over on the half hour.

Dragons coach Nathan Brown would have been thanking his lucky stars that his side was down only 16-0 at halftime, the Cowboys' dominance such that the margin could have just as easily been double that.

"It's not acceptable how we played, the first half, I know they are a good team, but the first half we were poor," Brown said.

"We were just off the pace, they were three yards ahead of us.

"We've played the same way all year, five games (including trials) we've had - we could have won five and we've won two because we keep doing the same silly mistakes."

The only positive to come out of the game for the Dragons was the return from injury of halfback Mathew Head, Brown rating his performance as "steady" in his first game back from knee surgery.

Leeds 72 defeated Workington 10

By Ross Heppenstall, PA Sport

Scott Donald blitzed Workington's collection of farmers, labourers and Sellafield workers with four tries inside the opening 21 minutes as Leeds cruised into the fifth round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup.

The Rhinos' Australian wing needed just 51 seconds to open the scoring against the Cumbrian part-timers and it was one-way traffic thereafter as Leeds ran in 13 tries.

The yawning gulf between Super League and National League Two was graphically illustrated by the speed and handling of Leeds' attacks, and a 42-0 interval score was indicative of their control.

In addition to Donald's four-try haul, influential scrum-half Rob Burrow claimed a hat-trick while youngsters Jordan Tansey (2) and Carl Ablett also touched down along with skipper Kevin Sinfield, Ali Lauitiiti and Matt Diskin.

Workington wing Stephen Dawes and second row Darryn King crossed the line in the closing stages but that did little to mask Leeds' total dominance.

It was no surprise the hosts began the brighter - the vast majority of Workington's squad had been working in their day jobs until lunchtime before boarding the coach to West Yorkshire.

Yet perhaps not even Rhinos coach Tony Smith, who made nine appearances for Workington in the inaugural Super League season, could have foreseen how dominant his side would be.

A bewildering array of inter-passing between Burrow, Danny McGuire and Ashley Gibson sent Donald racing clear into the left corner inside the opening minute.

Delightful handling from Lauitiiti then sent Tansey over three minutes later before Donald collected Diskin's exquisite long offload to go over in the left corner again.

In the 18th minute his hat-trick try arrived when he again scampered clear down the left flank and his fourth arrived three minutes later after more good work from the mercurial McGuire.

Leeds continued to press and were rewarded when Tansey collected McGuire's pass to go over and Sinfield then collected a reverse pass from Ablett to crash under the posts.

Burrow touched down Gibson's audacious grubber on the stroke of half-time and Lauitiiti barged his way over shortly after the restart.

Burrow, Ablett and Diskin then crossed before Burrow raced clear to complete his hat-trick after Workington prop Dean Vaughan was sinbinned shortly after the hour mark.

Sinfield landed eight conversions and Burrow claimed two before Workington's small band of fans had something to cheer in the closing stages when Dawes squeezed over and then King touched down, with Stephen Kirkbride adding the extras to King's score. Sporting Life

Castleford give Bulls Cup fright

Bradford were given a huge scare before beating National League side Castleford 24-16 to reach the fifth round of the Challenge Cup.

Cas, relegated last season from Super League, were 18-6 down at half-time but tries from Michael Shenton and Peter Lupton gave them a chance.

But David Solomona steadied the Bulls nerves with a try and they held on.

Elsewhere, there were comfortable victories for holders St Helens, Leeds and Salford.

Saints were barely troubled against Batley, running in 14 tries in a 78-14 win with two apiece from Paul Wellens, Francis Meli, Lee Gilmour and Maurie Fa'asavalu while teenager Steve Tyrer kicked 11 goals.

Leeds were equally dominant against Workington, winning 72-10 with Scott Donald managing four tries and Rob Burrow scoring a hat-trick.

Luke Robinson also scored four tries as Salford swept aside Gateshead 64-4 to go into the hat for the next round.

Bradford had looked on course for a comfortable win against Castleford when they went over for a try within two minutes through Glenn Morrison but winger Michael Wainwright levelled it up after nine minutes.

Tries by Marcus St Hilaire and Lesley Vainikolo, both converted by Paul Deacon, kept the Bulls ahead and they appeared set for a comfortable passage into the next round.

But Castleford were not going to give up without a fight with Awen Guttenbeil and Danny Brough leading the charge and Shenton was rewarded with a try to cut the gap.

Brough then set up Lupton to give Cas the chance of an upset but when Solomona went over with just over 10 minutes to go, the Bulls dug deep to hold on for the victory.  BBC Sport Online

Eels claim golden success

By Steve Jancetic

Parramatta fullback Luke Burt kicked a penalty goal eight minutes into extra-time to give the Eels their first win of the NRL season, a 22-20 victory over Wests Tigers at Parramatta Stadium.

Burt slotted the goal from 40 metres after Wests Tigers lock Dene Halatau was ruled to have not been square at marker by referee Steve Clark.

Wests Tigers, who have lost their opening three games of the premiership, have now lost all four golden-point games they have played.

Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah missed field goal attempts for the Tigers in exctra-time, while Burt missed for the Eels.

But Burt struck when it mattered most to secure Michael Hagan his first win as Eels coach.

"Pretty bloody nerve-wracking," Burt said when asked how he felt lining up for the match winner.

"I just had to try and block the crowd out, and treat it like any other kick, which was pretty hard to do.

"But it was sweet and I was lucky enough to get the goal."

Tigers coach Tim Sheens refused to criticise Clark over the Halatau penalty, preferring to hold back his judgement until he'd seen a replay.

"I hope that the whole set, the whole extra-time, the markers were square," he said.

The frantic finish capped a pulsating second half in which Wests Tigers constantly found holes in the Eels defence only to be let down by poor last-play options.

The Tigers ultimately paid the penalty for a pair of handling blunders that handed the home side two tries against the run of play in the opening 40 minutes, Joel Reddy picking up a Daniel Fitzhenry spill and Tim Smith racing 60 metres after intercepting an errant Farah pass.

"I still feel the better side go beaten ... the two passes they picked off in the first half gifted them 12 points," Sheens said.

"We were always chasing our tail after that.

"Although we've got no points after three games - that's disappointing, that's going to put us under a bit of pressure - but if we continue to improve that way and play some good footy, I'm happy that we're going forward."

The Tigers trailed 14-12 at half-time then conceded three consecutive penalties and lost Halatau to the sin bin after Clark ran out of patience.

Former Eels player John Morris hit back with a long run downfield only to lose the ball in a try-saving shoulder-charge tackle from fullback Luke Burt.

Burt said later: "I've never pulled off a hit like that in my life."

But the Tigers looked as if they were playing with a one-man advantage, finding easy yards up the middle, and they were soon level in numbers after Parramatta utility P.J. Marsh took out Marshall before the pivot had received the ball.

The Tigers declined an easy penalty goal attempt, and the decision backfired when Tim Smith kicked a grubber at the other end of the pitch to put Feleti Mateo over for his first NRL try.

The Tigers then carved up the Eels defence once again, but time they benefitted from Liam Fulton's bust, with Marshall dummying and diving over from dummy half to reduce the deficit to 20-18 with 16 minutes remaining.

Farah and Marshall then combined with a chip kick and a flick pass to put the visitors in position to secure the game-tying penalty. Foxsport

Panthers pip Broncos 29-28 in thriller

Elated Penrith five-eighth Peter Wallace described his match-winning 44-metre NRL field goal that sank Brisbane 29-28 at Suncorp Stadium as the "best feeling of my life".

Wallace's super strike completed a miraculous golden point win for the Panthers, who were eight points behind with five minutes to play.

"It's the first one I've ever kicked," said the Victorian-born 22-year-old, still smiling half an hour after the heart-stopping win.

Brisbane had led 28-20 after centre Justin Hodges scored his fourth try and none of the 24,582 crowd could have guessed the finish that was to unfold.

But when Penrith flyer Michael Jennings raced 85 metres to score his second try in the 77th minute, Penrith had a sniff.

With Brisbane desperately hanging on, winger Luke Rooney stabbed a grubber kick near Brisbane's line which deflected off Broncos winger Darius Boyd's foot.

Somehow, Panthers fullback Rhys Wesser flashed through and dived on the ball, the crowd holding its collective breath as video referee Tim Mander signalled a try to tie the game up 28-28.

Winger Michael Gordon had a chance to win the game on his own, but his pressure kick was just wide.

Penrith halfback Craig Gower had two snaps at field goal in the first period of extra time before Wallace stepped up and made an instant name for himself.

The loss kept the defending premiers winless and coach Wayne Bennett had little to say.

"You saw the game, write your own conclusion, you don't need me to elaborate on it," fired a snarly Bennett at the post-match press conference.

Asked if he was gutted or angry, Bennett said: "I'd rather pass on that question."

Panthers coach Matt Elliott was happy to take the points but said Penrith hadn't played that well against a team backing up on a short turnaround.

He complimented Hodges, only passed fit to play following a mid-morning test, on his four tries.

"He's a fine player, Justin Hodges. He needs to have knee problems more often," said Elliott.

Elliott was counting his blessings that Wesser was able to swoop on the ball for a try that sent the game into the golden-point period.

"A try like that, it's like playing the pinnies (pinball)," said Elliott of the way the ball bounced around before Wesser appeared from the blue.

Brisbane skipper Darren Lockyer said his side should have shut Penrith out in the closing minutes.

"We were up by eight with five minutes to go, we only have ourselves to blame," he said.

"They scored a couple of tries against the run of play, but we should have shut them out.

Indigenous Challenge - NSW 34 defeated Qld 14

WITH more steps than the Kangaroo Point Cliffs and bigger
hits than Festival Hall, the annual Indigenous Challenge
brought its special brand of razzle dazzle to Brisbane's
Suncorp Stadium on Friday.

Winding up 34-14 to New South Wales, the match needed to be
entertaining to placate the Maroon-loving crowd.

That fact was never in doubt however and in 60 minutes of
fast paced action, the two sides crammed in plenty of
highlights.

And well they might, with spots in the Australian Indigenous
Under 16s team up for grabs and an opportunity to play before
the Trans Tasman Test on April 20.

Two Queenslanders to submit an early claim were the supremely
impressive duo of Lyndon Law and Casey Fraser.

Centre Law brought the first cheer of the game when he pulled
off a massive tackle on Blues opposite Tyrone Roberts. It was
to be a feat he would recreate regularly throughout the clash.

Eight minutes in Law also grabbed the first points, slotting
a penalty from within throwing distance.

Unfortunately for the Queenslanders that was to be the last
time they would lead as New South Wales quickly grabbed the
ascendancy.

Hitting back with three converted tries before halftime the
Blues stormed to an 18-8 advantage at the break. Centre Kevin
Heath grabbed the first for the visitors in the 19th minute,
followed by a simple scooting try from lock Jordon Bolt four
minutes later.

Yet the try that hurt most was Roberts' effort 54 seconds
from the siren, finishing great ball movement through several
sets of hands on the left.

It was a fantastic team effort that nullified an outstanding
individual try from Maroons lock Fraser moments before.
Charging up the middle and jinking twice powerfully to evade
the defence, Fraser earned a deserved reward for a strong all-
round game.

While a 10-point margin didn't look insurmountable on paper,
when the teams returned for the second stanza it was clear
New South Wales had the wood on the opposition.

Queensland hooker Ricky Barber managed to bat down the last
pass on a certain try five minutes in but then the floodgates
opened.

In quick succession William Beale and Lance Whitnall crossed,
while Roberts grabbed his second for the night. Earning a
points decision over Law after their earlier confrontation,
Roberts also slotted five goals for a personal haul of 18
points.

In the shades of fulltime the game degenerated in terms of
handling, but not in defence.

Unable for long periods to promote the ball past its own 20m
line, Queensland instead reeled off a succession of stinging
hits and earned a consolation try with two minutes to go.

NEW SOUTH WALES 34 (Tyrone Roberts 2, William Beale, Lance
Whitnall, Kevin Heath, Jordon Bolt tries; Tyrone Roberts 5
goals) d QUEENSLAND 14 (Casey Fraser, Lindon Law tries;
Lyndon Law 2, Matthew Currie goals) at Suncorp Stadium.

Wayne Bennett - Brisbane Broncos

Written by Robert Rachow

.......his own personal thoughts on the character traits needed to succeed in life and offered excerpts from some of his favourite readings concerning integrity.

The basis of his work was that the road to success in football
often mirrors a similar path needed to eke out a contented existence.

It is a view Bennett still maintains and it can be adapted to Rugby League on both sides of the fence - playing and coaching.

"My number one tip to all aspiring coaches is that you have to be
your own man, no matter what," he says.

"If you are trying to change to beat someone who is better than you,
eventually they will catch you up anyway.

"The pressure associated with pretending to be someone else will inevitably drag you down and more than likely, it will outweigh any benefits you may have gained.

"The other important characteristic I believe all coaches should have is the ability to persevere.

"You have to handle the hard times and never walk away from a problem, regardless of how impossible it may seem.

"A man who walks away is a man with regrets and he will find it incredibly difficult to regain the confidence of his team once he turns his back.

"I think it is also a necessity that a coach displays a strong interest and affiliation with the club he is representing.

"Whether that be as an involved committee man or by providing a respectable public face for the team, he has to contribute in some way, shape or form.

"I am a strong believer that the coach should establish a close knit group among his players and at the Broncos we have implemented a number of strategies............Receive the RLCM CD-ROM with over 4000 pages of similar coaching information when you become a RLCM PAID SUBSCRIBER
