The Titans Show Patience

By Gary Roberts RLCM

The Titans proved again at Carrara on Monday night that they will be crowd pleasers in the NRL.

They are prepared to throw the ball around coming out of their own end and many times they brought the crowd of just fewer than 18,000 to its feet with some scintillating breaks.

Trailing 10-6 at halftime would not have been a major concern to the newcomers as possibly the Sharks should have been further in front.

To clarify that statement, the Titans did have the benefit of receiving four penalties whilst coming out of their end together with a knock-on by the Sharks on a first play from their own 20m.

Those five plays gave the Titans easy entry into and opportunity to play the game down the Sharks' end of the field.

An interesting statistic to analyse from this game occurs in the second half after the tenth set, with the Titans being down 16-6.

The Sharks had the ball on five of those first10 occasions and scored a try to reach this score.

The visitors were making easy yards coming out of their own end and after the first 10 to 12 minutes of the second half, with the Titans looking a bit scratchy as per their first half, it appeared the Sharks would go on and score their second win of the season.

What happened next is a credit to the new team, the Gold Coast Titans.

For the next 24 sets they held together and played like a team that had been playing together for many years, not just two games in the NRL.

They showed that they have an ingredient in the team that is needed to win games and that is patience.

To have patience in this game, you must have confidence. All players must have knowledge of the game plan and be secure in the ability of their fellow player.

Down 16-6 could have led the Titans to panic and to move away from the game plan, particularly the way the Sharks started to play in the second half.

How did they repel them and where did this patience come from? Why was it not there in the first half?

With the Sharks leading 16-6 on the eleventh set, play four, the Titans lost the ball on their own 30m line resulting in a Sharks' scrum feed 30m out from the Titans' line.

Normally, this would lead to extreme pressure for the Titans. However, the Sharks knocked on from the scrum, play one.

The momentum the Sharks had in the first section of this second half finished at that point.

From there the Titans completed 10 of their next 13 sets, through to set 32.

Through these completions, positive patience was evident. Their kick was positive and their defence on plays one and two was more positive.

During this period, they scored two converted tries and achieved the win they so needed.

Another point that also stands out is that the Titans were full of running and had a continued effective defence in the latter part of the game. This could indicate they were fitter than the Sharks. As further evidence of this, the Sharks looked a different team than the one on the field in the first part of the second half.

Titans 18 defeated Sharks 16.

Tony Smith becomes Britain's new league coach

New Great Britain rugby league coach Tony Smith says his appointment to run the national team is an overdue step to inject more hands-on knowledge into the sport's upper echelons in the UK.

Australian Smith, a former Illawarra and St George player, has won a strong reputation for his work with Huddersfield and now Leeds, where he will continue until the end of the current Super League season.

As well as being head coach - on a part-time basis until October - Smith will also be performance director of the sport in Britain.

"The rugby league are aware that they need an influence of people who are up to date with rugby league," Smith said.

"There are a lot of very good administrators within the rugby league, but they need some rugby league people in there, and I'm certainly in that category and I can bring that to the table.

"To have some influence there is a step that needed to be taken."

Smith's goal is to prepare for the World Cup in Australia in 2008, and in the shorter term to lift a side that failed to reach the final in the two most recent Tri-Series, costing predecessor Brian Noble his job.

"I'm excited and proud and very honoured to take up such a prestigious position," Smith said.

"I'm very excited about it because of the talent I get to work with - there's outstanding talent in this country.

"There's been a good foundation set by Brian Noble and David Waite and I'm looking forward to taking up on their work and taking it further.

"There's a lot of work to be done, and I don't shy away from hard work."

Smith accepted the national job after being given the green light to do so by the Leeds Rhinos.

"I spoke to the (Leeds players) today, and they know how committed I am for the rest of the season to their cause," Smith said.

"I am very very grateful to the Rhinos for letting me pursue this, and supporting me in this.

"For me to leave the Rhinos, it was going to take a big job because it is one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"To leave that was a very big decision to make, but I'm glad I've made it and I'm glad I'm going to finish with the Rhinos in the best possible way."

Smith cut his coaching teeth with assistant jobs at the Adelaide Rams then Parramatta and is the younger brother of Newcastle Knights coach Brian Smith.

He becomes the second Australian in six years to take charge of the British national team after ex-Newcastle Knights and St George Illawarra coach David Waite.

Smith, who coached Japan in the emerging nations section of the 2000 World Cup in England, paid his own airfare from Australia for an interview with Huddersfield seven years ago and was appointed as successor to John Kear.

He was unable to save the Giants from relegation in 2001 but brought them straight back up as Northern Ford Premiership champions.

Smith succeeded Daryl Powell at Leeds in 2003 and took them to their first grand final success at the first attempt.

He also guided them to victory over Canterbury Bulldogs in the 2005 World Club Challenge and to the Challenge Cup final that year.

He was Super League coach of the year for 2005 after a second successive grand final appearance but came under fire from fans last year for a season of underachievement, with Leeds beaten in the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup and the first round of the play-offs.

RLCM COACHTALK YEARBOOK 3

an extract from Brian McClennan NZ Kiwis Coach

...and of their strategy, allows the coach to understand what a player thinks of the game; developing this relationship will reinforce the direction the team wants to take.

For example, one directive taken by the side was 'bully the bully'. This sets the mindset within the team that they refuse to settle for anything. By adopting this theme to their game, the team had a goal at all times; they were going to remain in control.

Following communication, comes the game plan. Unfortunately, with limited time, the best thing to do is keep it simple, and play the game that suits your team. Ultimately, this means capitalising on your strengths and effectively using your key players; your halves combination, the fullback and the hooker.

Essentially, the play makers need to be comfortable and be able to communicate with each other to allow the other players to fit around them. McLennan affirms that the role of these players is necessary for success.

"You've got to promote them and [give them] ownership to do things. We'll try the fullback behind the hooker to tip him when there's good times to run, when there's lazy markers. [The] halfback should be constantly talking to the hooker." McLennan says.

The pivotal roles of the halves should also be ready to lead in defence. While your A, B and C defenders can also claim responsibility over defence, the halves have to be ready to call the shots if necessary.

If the opposition halves are coming in to set up, then the halves must be out on the edges in defence. Inevitably, how much time a team has to devote to their defence and attack stands to how much time they have for preparation.

While the defence has to prevent the opposition from scoring tries, the attack has to cross the line to score points of their own. Whether kicking high or passing before the line; pressure needs to be applied at all times, especially when working plays four and five. McLennan stresses the importance of remaining in control.

"Plays four and five are what turn a good set into a great set. Anything that applies pressure is how you've got to work plays four and five."

Again, playing to the strengths of the team when in a position where there is time constraints is the only solution. When there is no time to implement and develop new ideas, keep it simple.

"We're a side that doesn't kick long. It's really important for us to get to the 50m line [so] we can get a chance to apply some pressure ourselves. We work really hard on plays one, two and three."

The effort made to get yardage must be paramount. If a long kicking game does not suit the style of the game, then metres must be claimed. The New Zealand side focused on getting authority early in their sets, and getting players to........
