Sonny Bill gets first trial run
By Brad Walter
Sonny Bill Williams is set to make his comeback from the off-season knee surgery that kept him out of last year's Tri-Nations in the Bulldogs' opening trial against St George Illawarra on Saturday night.
Williams, who resumed full-contact training just last week, has been chosen in a preliminary squad of 19 players, which coach Steve Folkes will finalise on Thursday. Already ruled out of the WIN Stadium clash are halfback Brent Sherwin (ankle), utility Reni Maitua (knee), centres Willie Tonga (hamstring) and Andrew Emelio (knee) and forwards Brad Morrin (knee) and Jon Green (hamstring), although all should be fit for the opening premiership match against Newcastle.
Folkes has decided to rest internationals Willie Mason, Mark O'Meley and Andrew Ryan, while prop Chris Armit is recovering from an off-season shoulder reconstruction and won't be available until round three.
But Williams will head a strong line-up that includes international wingers Matt Utai and Hazem El Masri, veteran fullback Luke Patten and rookie Kiwis halfback Ben Roberts, who played in last year's mid-season Test against Great Britain. New recruits Daryl Millard, Lee Te Maari and Aaron Wheatley will play against their former club.
Meanwhile, Manly's star signing Jamie Lyon will make his debut for the Sea Eagles at five-eighth in Saturday night's trial against Melbourne on the Sunshine Coast. Lyon will partner new Manly captain Matt Orford in the halves, with coach Des Hasler planning to use all his available players except Steve Matai, Brent Kite and Steve Menzies.
Storm coach Craig Bellamy is planning to field an understrength line-up after playing most of his stars in last Saturday night's 32-6 win over Gold Coast at Coffs Harbour.
Jason Taylor is adopting a similar strategy for his first outing as South Sydney coach, and will today announce the eagerly awaited first Rabbitohs side of the season to meet Cronulla at Gosford on Saturday night.
However, fans excited about Souths' off-season recruiting are likely to be disappointed, with New Zealand Test stars Roy Asotasi, David Kidwell and Nigel Vagana rested. Also missing will be fullback David Peachey and new halfback Jeremy Smith, who is recovering from a knee injury.
Former Parramatta back-rower Dean Widders and ex-St George Illawarra fullback Reece Simmonds will make their debuts for the Rabbitohs in a side that otherwise resembles the team that finished last season with the wooden spoon. SMH

Brisbane Broncos warned not to underestimate St Helens
Australian champions Brisbane Broncos have been warned not to underestimate struggling St Helens in Friday's Carnegie World Club Challenge.
The Super League champions will go into the clash with the Broncos at the Reebok Stadium under a cloud after suffering back-to-back defeats by Harlequins and Wakefield.
But former Wakefield coach Shane McNally on Monday warned the Broncos against complacency and tipped St Helens to turn things around.
"I wouldn't be surprised if St Helens beat Brisbane," McNally told the Brisbane Courier Mail.
"If not, the fans will be asking for the head of Daniel Anderson. If they perform poorly again, you have to wonder whether there are other issues out there."
McNally, who was Super League coach of the year in 2004 after guiding the Wildcats to the play-offs, returned to Australia last year and will coach Brisbane club Wynnum-Manly this season.

Villasanti signs with London Harlequins
Former New Zealand Warriors rugby league prop Richard Villasanti has signed with English club Harlequins.
The former Kangaroos international will link up with his new teammates in London next week on a two-year deal.
Villasanti left the Warriors midway through last year to join Cronulla and has this week been released from his contract by the Sharks to enable the move.
The Canberra-born Villasanti, who also had stints at Wests Tigers and Balmain, spent five years with the Warriors, becoming the first player from the club to represent Australia, in 2003.
He also played for the Junior Kiwis and represented Tonga in the 2000 World Cup.
Villasanti will link up with former Warriors' teammate and prop Karl Temata.
Harlequins coach Brian McDermott was delighted to add more firepower up front.
"Richard will add immense strength and experience to what is already a very competent pack of forwards," McDermott said.
"He is just the type of player we have been looking for and I am delighted he is joining us.
"We will be continuing to bolster the squad with the right calibre of person, but as I have stated many times, it must be the right person." NZ Herald Online

Just have a ball, says coach Cartwright
The Gold Coast Titans are having a ball at the luxurious Pacific Bay Resort, Coffs Harbour but it has nothing to to with the NRL newcomers veering off the rails _ in fact, they're acting strictly on head coach John Cartwright's orders.
Cartwright got his squad together at the weekend and presented every player in the group with a football, which he said he wanted them to carry everywhere at the resort.
The players were even told they would be fined if they didn't keep the footballs with them.
It's an old ploy by Cartwright. Junior coaches have been using a similar method for decades.
"I just don't think players carry the football around enough any more," Cartwright said.
"A lot of our training these days tends to focus on the athletic side of things and sometimes ball skills take a backseat.
"We make it all a bit robotic. You are only meant to catch, pass and kick the ball in certain ways, but in reality in games it doesn't always work out that way."
The Titans, who are in camp this week in Coffs Harbour, have been told they risk being fined if they lose or don't carry their football with them anytime they leave their rooms.
"What they do behind closed doors is up to them, but whenever they are walking around the complex they should have the ball with them," Cartwright said.
"They have to bring it to training, breakfast and by the end of the week I want them to all come up with some sort of trick with it."
The Titans are in Coffs Harbour to prepare for Saturday night's trial match against the Parramatta Eels in Lismore. Courier Mail

Costly halves get another chance
By Brent Read
Maligned Sharks halves Adam Dykes and Brett Kimmorley play their first game of the season on Saturday knowing they have little time to impress coach Ricky Stuart and earn another contract.
Dykes and Kimmorley, who were most blamed for the demise of former coach Stu Raper, were named in a strong 23-man squad yesterday for the pre-season match against South Sydney at Central Coast Stadium.
The pair struggled to gel last year, playing in a 10-match losing streak to miss the finals.
The next month will be crucial for both as Stuart looks to build his squad for 2008. The Sharks have already held talks with Wayne Beavis, the manager of Test forwards Luke O'Donnell and Mark O'Meley, and have flagged a move for Australia wing Lote Tuqiri.
O'Donnell and O'Meley would command upwards of $300,000 each on the open market while Tuqiri is unlikely to switch codes for anything less than $750,000.
At the same time, the Sharks must retain several players coming off contract, including forward Paul Gallen, fullback David Simmons and young forward Reece Williams. Dykes and Kimmorley are among the highest-paid players at the Sharks and could be squeezed out.
There would be no shortage of quality halves for Stuart to target, with Sydney Roosters pair Josh Lewis and Mitchell Pearce off contract at the end of the season.
St Helens halfback Sean Long, who met Stuart during last year's Tri-Nations series, has also signalled his desire to play in the NRL.
Dykes and Kimmorley's manager, George Mimis, said both would prefer to remain with the Sharks.
"They're both open-minded about their future, whether it be with Cronulla or in the UK or some other option," Mimis said.
With the June 30 anti-tampering rule dropped, clubs are moving earlier to determine their playing rosters for 2008. They can make offers but the NRL won't register contracts until after round 13.

Broncos will push to retain Hodges and Tate
By Adam Gardini
Broncos officials will begin their push to re-sign star backs Justin Hodges and Brent Tate next week after the pair return from Brisbane's World Club Challenge assault.
Player manager George Mimis yesterday revealed he would begin talks with Broncos management over the duo's respective futures at a meeting next Tuesday.
Mimis said the meeting would act as the pair's first point of call before a decision was made as to whether they would realistically explore their options elsewhere beyond 2007.
Tate has already held preliminary talks with the Australian Rugby Union about a possible switch of codes next season.
Hodges and Tate, who both turn 25 this year, are currently in the United Kingdom preparing for the Broncos' clash with St Helens at Bolton's Reebok Stadium early on Saturday morning Australian time.
"In the first instance we will have the Broncos discussion. But there would be significant interest should they wish to look around," said Mimis.
Asked if a switch to rugby union was a realistic option for Tate, who has never played the 15-man game, Mimis said: "You never say never.
"You obviously need to explore all the options out there. Brent's had a marvellous career and achieved virtually everything he can in rugby league."
Among other Broncos coming off contract at season's end are Shaun Berrigan, Gold Coast-born flyers Darius Boyd and Steve Michaels, representative forwards Sam Thaiday, Dane Carlaw and Brad Thorn and teenagers Greg Eastwood and Joel Moon. Gold Coast Bulletin

Bolton manager Sam Allardyce aids St Helens cause
Saints, who last season won all three major trophies with something to spare, face Australian champions Brisbane Broncos at the Reebok Stadium on Friday.
They will go into the encounter on the back of two defeats from their opening three engage Super League games, but coach Daniel Anderson could hardly be accused of resting on his laurels.
The former New Zealand boss has tapped into the secrets of Bolton's success as he seeks to maintain Saints' position as engage Super League's dominant force.
A mini-revolution in sports science has been under way at Bolton since Allardyce's appointment in October 1999, and helped them to qualify for Europe in 2005.
Anderson, who spent a day at the Trotters' training ground with Bolton's performance director Mike Forde, said: "I didn't fully appreciate the huge strides that Bolton have made, and it was a bit of an eye-opener for me.
"There's not a huge chasm between the core elements of sports and there were things that I learned from Bolton that we can definitely add to our own programme and mimic in our own way.
"For example, their medical department is highly acclaimed and that gives you food for thought in terms of how players can be looked after and nursed back from injury, which is particularly pertinent in rugby league."
With last week's home defeat against Harlequins RL followed by another embarrassing defeat at perennial strugglers Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, Saints clearly face a huge challenge to emulate last season's remarkable feats.
Anderson added: "Super League will be more competitive than ever this season because all of our rivals have strengthened significantly.
"But what ourselves and Bolton are trying to do is squeeze out every last ounce of potential we can out of our respective clubs.
"We understand that there are clubs bigger than St Helens and Bolton.
"But if you're utilising your staff and your players in the best available manner, then that becomes a very powerful tool, as Bolton have proved."
Allardyce has assembled the biggest and best-qualified backroom staff in British football.
He said: "Our prevention of injury policy is certainly relevant to St Helens and how they care for their players.
"They can also take aspects of our diet and nutrition programme and our video analysis.
"If you can be aware of what is changing, or even better be instrumental in the change, then it can give you that extra few per cent on your rivals.
"Your greatest tool as a manager is understanding what your players need. When you play Manchester United you don't need to hype them up.
"You need to calm them down because there's too much adrenaline flowing through their bodies and it's important to ensure they're focused on the task in hand."
Allardyce's interest in sports science began during a brief spell playing for Tampa Bay Rowdies in America in 1983.
Saints coach Anderson is not the first person to have sought out Bolton's winning formula.
St Helens aim to add the Carnegie World Club Challenge to their burgeoning trophy cabinet this week - with a helping hand from Bolton manager Sam Allardyce.
"We started with the England rugby union team which won the World Cup under Sir Clive Woodward," explained Allardyce.
"We developed a lot of research into video and we introduced them to ProZone. They showed us one or two of the motivational videos which moved us into that area.
"Now, we might compile a video of our leading scorer's goals, with music over the top of it, and give him the tape to watch."
Anderson plans to strengthen the link which has been established between Saints and Bolton.
"There's an open invitation to a couple of members of their staff to now come to St Helens and see what we do," he added. RFL Online

Bellamy makes experimentation a science
Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy has never been afraid to experiment, although fashioning a hooker out of a fullback must rate as one of his most unusual.
Last year five-eighth Cooper Cronk was moulded into a halfback, and was integral in the club's surge to the grand final, winning Dally M Halfback of the Year.
This time former Origin fullback Billy Slater, the glamour face of the Storm club, played the dummyhalf role in their 32-6 NRL trial win over Gold Coast in Coffs Harbour last Saturday.
Bellamy said he thought Slater could add another dimension to Melbourne's attack around the ruck, when regular hooker and Dally M Player of the Year Cameron Smith was off the field.
"It's something that we're looking at, see what happens there," Bellamy said.
"He offers us some pace out there, he offers us pace everywhere else so we thought we'd see how he went there.
"He might be able to change the tempo of the game a little bit for us."
Another experiment Bellamy conducted against the Titans was Greg Inglis, in his first outing at five-eighth.
Taking over from Scott Hill, who now plays with the Harlequins in English Super League, Inglis played about 60 minutes of the match.
Usually an outside back, the 20-year-old who was the club's top tryscorer last year, said after the match he felt he needed to become more involved in attack.
Bellamy said it was hard to gauge his performance because of the number of errors made by his side.
"He was OK, he didn't set the world on fire but it was hard for anyone to find any rhythm there because we kept dropping the footy so it was hard to find out a lot.
"I thought our defence was pretty good but there were areas of our attack we needed to tidy up a little bit, I expected a little bit more.
Bellamy was pleased with 18-year-old winger Will Chambers, who scored two tries, and also made mention of 17-year-old Israel Falou, who played in an earlier Storm trial.
He rated Jeff Lima as the Storm's best forward against Gold Coast.
"We blew out a couple of cobwebs and will be better for it next time," he said.
Melbourne play their next trial against Manly in Caloundra on Saturday. Yahoo Sport

Henry says Raiders better than 100-1
Rookie Canberra coach Neil Henry understands the bookies making his side the outsiders for this year's NRL title, but says the 100-1 being offered is way over the top.
With the green machine losing over 1000-games of experience following the departure of skipper Clinton Schifcofske, Jason Croker, Simon Woolford, Jason Smith, Adam Mogg and Michael Hodgson, bookmakers moved quickly to install the Raiders as rank outsiders for the premiership.
Centrebet is offering odds of 100-1 on the Raiders lifting the trophy on grand final day with South Sydney on the next line of betting at 40-1.
TABSportsbet is only offering odds of 66-1 on the Raiders winning the title with the Rabbitohs and Penrith at 25-1.
All this comes despite the fact the Raiders have made the finals series in four of the last five seasons, while the best the Rabbitohs have managed in that same time span is third last.
"The bookies go through the playing roster and have a look at what clubs have recruited," Henry said of the massive disparity in the odds.
"Souths have recruited very well - some quality players - and the (Gold Coast) Titans have done the same.
"I don't think it's a fair call that we're that far behind the other teams though.
"It's like the form guide - if you haven't got a lot of history on some players you tend to think `well they're not up to the standard of these other players.
"I'm confident that we can win our fair share of games and we're building towards that. People are entitled to their opinion but I think we're a better side than those odds."
The Raiders won their opening trial on Saturday night with a severely understrength side beating a North Queensland Young Guns outfit 28-10 in Rockhampton.
Several of the club's new faces were given a run against the Queensland Cup side with Henry vowing to send out a more recognised line-up against Brisbane this weekend.
The Broncos will field a second string side with their main squad in England for this weekend's World Club Challenge clash against St Helens.
Henry said it was vital his group hit the ground running when the competition proper kicked off with an away game against Manly on March 17.
"We're a club that's going to need to be at our best each week to win games," Henry said.
"We need to be playing at our ability level and get that consistency that's sometimes difficult to get in particular with young players.
"They tend to be okay for a couple of games and then drop off a bit and that's what we're going to have to cope with."
The Raiders only trial against a full strength opposition will come against Wests Tigers at Davies Park in Brisbane on March 3. Yahoo Sport

Thunder put to the sword in big loss
By Jeff Bowron, The Journal
Gateshead Thunder's poor start to the 2007 rugby league campaign continued when they suffered a second consecutive heavy defeat yesterday.
Thunder are bottom of Northern Rail Cup Group Two after they conceded nine tries at Keighley Cougars - the second lowest ranked side in the professional game last year.
Thunder had conceded over a point a minute in the second half of last week's opening day defeat against York but they again posted the first points of the game.
Playmaker Kevin Till was involved providing the grubber kick for debutant Jono Rolfe to score.
Australian Rolfe tagged on the extra two points but an outgunned Thunder had to wait until two minutes from time to add to their score. Another off-season Australian recruit, prop Dylan Nash, profited after the ball had gone through a number of hands.
But with Thunder again struggling defensively Keighley took little time to cancel out Rolfe's touchdown.
Mick Fogerty, who went on to score a hat-trick, touched down in the corner in the next set and the Cougars led by 10 points by the end of the first quarter.
With player coach Barry Eaton exploiting the Cougar Park slope, Keighley then went on to put daylight between themselves and a limited Gateshead outfit.
Ryan Smith converted his own try and then Chris Fawcett, Chris Redfearn and Fogerty's second put the game beyond Thunder.
Keighley's defensive line held firm in the third quarter as they stretched their lead through Matt Foster's long range intercept try and a Greg Nicholson touchdown.
Powerful centre Fogerty completed a well-taken hat-trick just past the hour and Fawcett grabbed his second as the Cougars cruised to an emphatic cup victory.
Gateshead Thunder: Stephenson, Peers, Harris, Williamson, Walton, Rolfe, Till, Wooden, Martin, Metcalfe, Bradley, Rutherford, Hyde. Subs: Nash, Barron, Martinez, Thorman.
Referee: James Child (Dewsbury). ic Newcastle

Super League Wrap
Jamie Rooney provided the inspiration as St Helens slumped to another humiliating 29-22 defeat ahead of Friday's World Club Challenge against Brisbane Broncos.
The Wakefield stand-off emulated his namesake and Manchester United striker Wayne with a stellar display which included a try and a drop-goal to complete an astonishing comeback from John Kear's men.
Trinity trailed 18-6 at the break but went on to run in four second-half tries with a blistering performance which left Saints stunned.
Trinity deserved their victory for their second-half masterclass but St Helens coach Daniel Anderson cannot fail to have been bitterly disappointed with his own side's woeful display.
New boy Michael Platt grabbed an impressive hat-trick of tries as Bradford Bulls staged a magnificent recovery to make it two opening wins in this season thanks to a 36-20 triumph at Warrington.
Full-back Platt, snapped up from Castleford Tigers, took the honours as the Bulls fought back from 14-6 down just before the interval.
But it was far from a one man show as the Bulls dug deep to stun the Wolves.
New boys Hull KR made it two wins out of two with a gritty performance in the 17-10 win over Huddersfield, who remain win-less after three matches.
Picking up from where they left in their dramatic opening-round win over Wakefield, Rovers raced into a 16-0 lead and, urged on by 2,000 vociferous fans among the 7,700 crowd, held off a spirited fightback from the Giants.
Their victory was based on a workmanlike display from their pack - in which former Australia prop Michael Vella was especially outstanding - and the kicking game of industrious captain James Webster.
Pat Richards kicked a dramatic 80th-minute goal to snatch an 18-16 victory for Wigan against Catalans Dragons in rain-lashed Perpignan.
The Warriors trailed throughout the match until Australian stand-off Trent Barrett sent captain Sean O'Loughlin crashing over for a try to tie the scores in the 78th minute.
Richards stepped up to strike the vital conversion to give Brian Noble's side their first points of the season.
The result ruined the party for Catalans, who returned to their redeveloped Gilbert Brutus Stadium.
Salford's David Hodgson missed a last-gasp conversion in an 18-18 draw as Harlequins' unbeaten start to the new season continued at the Stoop.
Quins conceded two tries in the final 10 minutes as winless Salford staged an unlikely comeback in the dying minutes but were unable to seal all the points as Hodgson fluffed his late effort at goal.
On Friday, Leeds mastered the mud to make it two wins out of two and leave last year's beaten Grand Finalists Hull still waiting for their first success as they lost 18-4 in Yorkshire.
England international Lee Smith scored the only try of the first half as Leeds ground out a 6-0 interval lead and they defied atrocious conditions at Headingley to score twice more after the break.
Chances were at a premium on a quagmire of a pitch but the Rhinos were deserved winners after enjoying the bulk of possession and demonstrating the greater flair in front of a crowd of 18,659.
Kevin Sinfield and Ryan Bailey got the second half tries for the Rhinos while Matt Sing went over for Hull's only score. Sporting Life

Faumuina's NRL resurrection on track
Controversial backrower Sione Faumuina still "has a lot to prove" despite keeping his NRL resurrection on track with an impressive pre-season campaign for North Queensland.
Cowboys chief executive Peter Parr was full of praise over the ex-Kiwi international's progress including a head-turning 60-minute stint as North Queensland captain in last weekend's 28-10 trial loss to Canberra at Rockhampton.
Parr admitted Faumuina's remarkable turnaround at Townsville since being dumped by New Zealand Warriors and then walking out on English outfit Harlequins had him well on track for the backrow spot alongside Test forward Luke O'Donnell in next month's NRL opener.
But Parr said Faumuina's chequered past ensured the hulking Kiwi had reached "the crossroads of his career" in North Queensland.
Faumuina signed a two-year deal in January and was obviously keen to impress against Canberra - his first game since July 21 last year.
"He understands that he is probably at the crossroads of his career," Parr said.
"And all the indications are that he will make the most of the opportunity that we have given him.
"But in saying that he understands that it is early days and he has a lot to prove both on and off the field."
Critics believed Faumuina's NRL career was over when he was cut by the Warriors last season after a string of off-field indiscretions and moved to Harlequins in London.
However, Faumuina left the Super League club without playing a game citing personal reasons only to resurface at Townsville.
Parr said Faumuina would not be rested from the Cowboys' next trial against his former club the Warriors in Mackay on Saturday despite their rocky past.
"I don't think there's anything in that," he said.
"Sione needs to play some football. We've got the Warriors pretty early in the year (round five) so he's got to play them sooner rather than later."
Parr said O'Donnell - recovering from elbow surgery - had been pencilled in for the weekend trial in Mackay but was more likely to return against Manly in Cairns on March 3.
He said Faumuina's form would ensure a welcome headache for coach Graham Murray as he finalises his backrow for the NRL season opener against Brisbane.
Origin reps Carl Webb and Jacob Lillyman and Steve Southern are also vying for the backrow spot alongside O'Donnell.
"I would suggest he (O'Donnell) is the only certainty in the backrow for the Brisbane game," Parr said.
"And Sione's been terrific from day one.
"He acknowledged that he had made some mistakes in the past.
"It's only early days but all indications are that it is a win-win situation.
"But we want to make sure he is good for us on and off the field for a long period of time - but so does he."
O'Donnell said Faumuina could become a "weapon" for the Cowboys.
O'Donnell said he was on track to return next weekend against Manly - a club that recently targeted him in an aggressive recruitment drive.
O'Donnell - who comes off contract at the end of 2007 - is yet to re-sign with North Queensland.
He said he was "flattered" by Manly's attention but admitted he was no closer to deciding his future. SMH Online

Chris Beattie cleared for Roosters
Sydney Roosters prop Chris Beattie has escaped a charge for his high tackle on Wests Tigers hooker Robbie Farah in Saturday night's NRL trial.
Beattie was put on report by referee Jared Maxwell for the second half hit but NRL match review co-ordinator Greg McCallum ruled that no further action was required.
The match was Beattie's first in Roosters colours after joining the club from English Super League strugglers Les Catalans. SMH Online

Gidley set for No.1 as Mullen slots in
Newcastle utility Kurt Gidley looks set for a permanent move to the No.1 jumper as part of new Knights coach Brian Smith's solution to the logjam in the halves.
Smith appears sold on an Andrew Johns-Jarrod Mullen scrumbase combination for his first campaign in charge of the Knights, with `Mr Fixit' Gidley to move to fullback at the expense of Milton Thaiday.
It's a position not unfamiliar to the 26-year-old utility, who played much of his junior footy and the back end of last season at the back.
"I thought I finished the year off pretty well there last year and I enjoyed it," Gidley told AAP.
"I had pretty much a free reign on where I wanted to go on the field and I think that suits my game.
"I can float around the ruck or hang out wide for the long shifts - it probably suits my game more than five-eighth did."
With Johns entrenched in the No.7 jumper for as long as chooses to lace up a boot, Smith said he had to find a new home for Gidley in order to fit teenage five-eighth Mullen in the run-on side.
Mullen, 19, showed glimpses of his potential with several eye catching displays last season, none better than in the first week of the finals when he kicked the match-winning field goal to sink the Sea Eagles.
Mullen and Gidley will both play in Saturday night's trial against Penrith in Darwin, with Smith confident of a strong performance from Gidley following a strong offseason campaign.
"He played at fullback as kid before he came into grade football, he's looked quite good in training but obviously we're really keen to see how he deals with the pressures of the game," Smith said.
"We just haven't decided yet if that's his primary position.
"He's probably going to suffer from that versatility thing - he's good at a few spots so he might continue to suffer from that - but we'll see how he goes at fullback first."
What it all means for Thaiday, who set EnergyAustralia Stadium alight on several occasions last year with his blistering pace and dazzling footwork, remains unclear.
Thaiday has recovered following offseason back surgery, but will miss the clash with the Panthers due to a quad strain.
While Gidley's ability with ball in hand is undeniable, there is still a question mark over his ability under the high ball.
And while he is sure to cop plenty of bombing raids from opposition kickers, Smith said he hadn't assigned Gidley any extra training to help build his confidence at defusing bombs.
"Only as a matter of course, all the wingers and fullbacks do that sort of stuff," said Smith.
"For a bloke that was more or less thrown into it as they needed to do at that time of the season I think he handled it really well and he'll get better with more practice and more experience."
Following Saturday's trip to the top end, the Knights meet Cronulla at Cessnock on March 3 with Smith confident of having Johns, Steve Simpson and Adam MacDougall all available for the clash.
Squad to play Penrith: Daniel Abraham, George Carmont, Paul Franze, Kurt Gidley, Marvan Karawana, Jacob Ling, James McManus, Jarrod Mullen, Cory Paterson, Josh Perry, Todd Polglase, Luke Quigley, Kirk Reynoldson, Jesse Royal, Terrence Seu Seu, Mark Tafua, Brad Tighe, Willie Tupou, Luke Walsh, Matthew White, Adam Woolnough, Akuila Uate. Ex-Cowboy riding his luck with Broncos
Former Cowboys halfback Brent McConnell will attempt to build on a fine start with Brisbane when the Broncos combine with Queensland Cup club Redcliffe to play an NRL trial against Canberra.
McConnell is one of nine young Broncos named in the joint outfit to take on a near full-strength Raiders outfit on Saturday night at Redcliffe's Dolphin Oval.
The 26-year-old, contracted as a back-up to starting half Shane Perry, was one of the Broncos best in their 22-14 win over Queensland Cup team Wynnum on the weekend.
After coming off the bench, he provided the smarts and fine direction to help young gun Joel Moon to carve up the Seagulls defence.
McConnell, who took Burleigh to the Queensland Cup title in 2004, spent two largely unspectacular seasons at the Cowboys in the shadow of Johnathan Thurston.
Young wingers Denan Kemp and African-born Gideon Mzembe also get their chance to impress while Moon will start in the centres but is likely to move into five-eighth to link with McConnell.
The match will be the Broncos last trial without their front-liners who are currently in England preparing for the World Club Challenge against St Helens.
Broncos-Dolphins: Ryan Cullen (Dolphins), Denan Kemp (Broncos), Joel Moon (Broncos), Nick Emmett (Dolphins), Gideon Mzembe (Broncos), Chris Fox (Dolphins), Marty Turner (Dolphins), Troy Lindsay (Dolphins), Mick Roberts (Dolphins), Nick Kenny (Broncos), Danny Bourke (Dolphins), Chris Muckert (Broncos), Mark Shipway (Dolphins). Res: Dave Taylor (Broncos), Ian Lacey (Broncos), John Te Reo (Broncos), Brent McConnell (Broncos), Nick Walker (Dolphins). SMH Online
Winners are Smilers in Wales
Coach John Dixon had this to say about his Celtic Crusaders win over Skolars at the weekend. "Something I learned a long time ago is that while, as a coach or as a player, you may not be satisfied with how you went about your business, you still have to smile when you win."
Celtic started strongly but three games in eight days on heavy tracks took their toll and Skolars took some convincing that they were not expected to win.
"They made us work for every point and scored a few of their own," Dixon commented. "We really struggled to open up a gap on them."
Skolars scored a try against the run of play right on half-time which gave them a two point lead.
It wasn't until the dying stages of the second half that the Welsh boys showed their supremacy and broke away for a leg-weary but convincing win of 44 to 28.
"It was a credit to our key players for staying on the game for the full 80 minutes," coach Dixon said. "We get a week's break now before we head to Leigh next Sunday. Leigh were strong winners of the Northern Rail Cup in 2006. Our effort against them will be an interesting indicator."
Best for Celtic were Tim Duggan (3 tries), Neil Budworth, Damien Quinn and Jace Van Dijk. Celtic Crusaders Online

Keiron Cunningham is in a league of his own
Peter Shuttleworth
Wayne Bennett and Darren Lockyer are reluctant to lavish praise but both are both certain Keiron Cunningham is in a league of his own.
The Brisbane Broncos policy is to reserve judgement on opponents - especially prior to rugby league's clash of the domestic titans.
But such is their admiration and respect for the man known as 'World's Best,' Cunningham enjoys special treatment.
As it happens, the hard-nosed St Helens hooker could have been in the enemy camp for Friday's Worlds Club Challenge.
Broncos coach Bennett once made an approach to sign the Welshman.
Bennett is rugby league's greatest coach while Lockyer is the world's finest player and both are in no doubt that Cunningham is a legend.
Bennett, winner of six NRL Championships in his 19 years at Brisbane, went as far as to say: "Keiron is in the top two or three hookers that have played the game.
"He has wonderful vision and his decision-making is excellent."
Bennett's skipper Lockyer, recently awarded the golden boot for the world's best rugby league player, added: "I've seen some pretty good hookers in my time and Keiron would hold his own with any of them. He is a world-class player.
"I played against Keiron when Australia played Wales in the 2000 World Cup and I'm still aching from the bumps and scars.
"He is a very damaging player and he makes it extremely difficult for the opposition to gain any momentum.
"He is a winner. Keiron has been a massive part in Saints' success and we'll have to mark him tight."
Five Championships and a World Club crown have rightly secured Cunningham immortality status at Knowsley Road. But the only one-club man to play in every Super League season toyed with the idea of becoming a galactico at rugby league's 'Real Madrid.'
"Following my Tri-Nations tour with GB in 2005, a few Australian agents got in touch to ask if I was interested in going Down Under," said Cunningham.
"The agent said I'd have the pick of the clubs. I know he'd talked with Wayne Bennett about me and he was keen. If I would have gone to Australia, the Brisbane Broncos is where I would have gone.
"Wayne Bennett is a very grounded man and his coaching techniques are very simple.
"To be so successful at his job for so long is unbelievable. Players normally find coaches' methods tedious and team's work out how to play against you but Wayne Bennett constantly evolves.
"I have immense respect for him and I would have liked to have been coached by him. And there's mutual respect.
"For Wayne Bennett to be interested in you is a great honour but I said thanks, but no thanks. I'm a St Helens boy living my dream, playing for my local club. And I've a young family and I couldn't uproot my kids who had settled in school. I'm only in rugby for a few years but I'm with my family for a lifetime."
Keiron has missed 30 games in his ten-year Super League career and last year quit playing international rugby for Great Britain, if not Wales, to extend his St Helens career.
"You can't fault Keiron's loyalty," admitted Bennett, the former Aussie rugby league coach. "He's a great professional and I've no doubt he would have made it big in Australia.
"But he has done okay for himself over here."
Cunningham inspired Saints to Grand Final and Challenge Cup success last season and hopes to complete the grand slam against the Broncos at Bolton's Reebok Stadium on Friday.
"Saints against the Broncos is the clash of the domestic titans," said the 30-year-old.
"I've won 11 trophies with Saints and I've been fortunate to play in so many sides.
"It's something extra special because I'm a St Helens lad and a one-club player doesn't come along that often. It's a shame they're trying to scrap testimonial games as it would be a nice reward for loyalty because many players jump ship.
"But I've played in a great St Helens side. Wigan had their era during the late '80s and early '90s but with a good backbone of myself, Sean Long and Paul Sculthorpe, my time has coincided with our era.
"My body has taken a battering but I've a couple of years left. Our coach Daniel Anderson has re-energised my enjoyment for the game. He's the best coach I've worked under.
"Hopefully I can show the old dog has some new tricks against the Broncos." Wales on Sunday

Putting the boot in for junior league
By Dean Wedlake
Shiny new boots will stomp all over rugby league fields across Howick and Pakuranga this season.
Footwear and clothing outlet Frontrunner has donated 1000 pairs of football boots to Auckland Rugby League's (ARL) junior ranks as part of its campaign to break into the Auckland market.
Pakuranga League Club was the grateful recipient of 30 pairs while Howick League Club picked up 20 pairs.
"We'll be providing the boots to families that have a number of children playing at the club and find it hard to find the money to buy their gear. A decent pair can cost around $60-80 so it's certainly not cheap," says Pakuranga chairman Jason Koroheke.
The ARL received 1000 sets to distribute to clubs throughout Auckland, providing higher numbers to lower socio-economic areas.
ARL special projects manager Gordon Gibbons is thrilled with the boost that allows his sport to prevent talented youngsters from falling through the cracks.
"We have a number of families who, for what ever reason, struggle to provide the appropriate footwear for their children to wear while playing sport, especially families who have more than one child taking part," he says.
"For Frontrunner to provide us with boots to give to our clubs who in turn pass them onto club members at no cost what so ever, lifts a huge financial burden from parents." Howick and Pakuranga Times

PUTTING TOGETHER A WINNING TEAM
Dr Adrian Hurley OAM
ARL High Performance Seminar
I have been asked to give some thoughts on how I go about putting together a winning team culture for the NRL.
The answer is the same way I try to put together a winning team in any sport at any level.
Here below are some of the principles I adopt.
1. Get the right players. Good players make good coaches.
. Committed . Talented . Team orientated . Want to win . Love and enjoy the sport.
Obviously you are only as good a coach as the players you have. Sometimes at the club level, if we start out as a new coach we do not have a lot of say in who plays on our team at the beginning.
However, I think you should set down the above traits and if you see a player, or players, that do not aspire to most of the above, then you should replace them.
The only trait above that you can compromise on is talent.
2. Get the right people around the team. . Coaches, assistant coaches . Support staff, managers . Technical staff, video tape volunteers, physios, etc.
At the national league level it is extremely important to choose the right staff and get the right people around you to support the way you want to prepare and coach the team.
Even at the junior level, you will have a better team if you involve others to help you. I have never had trouble getting volunteers even at the national league level.
3. PLAN. "Failure to plan is to plan to fail."
There is no point in you and the team having different goals. If you and the team or owners "are not on the same page" you will not have a happy season.
The differences in attitude may be that the board/owners want to be competitive, hopefully make the playoffs, and to be a stable competitive team each year (based on the amount of money the club has). Yet you as the coach may be aiming to win the competition.....
