Shaun McRae - another victim of the fated 'move upstairs'?

By Gaz Shaw

In the old days rugby and football clubs had a manager or coach. These days, it's all about head coach and director of this, than and the other. Can such a relationship work?

There were a fair few raised eyebrows when NRL basement boys South Sydney Rabbitohs recruited Jason Taylor as Shaun McRae's assistant coach. The punters were eager for bookmakers to open the bets on the first managerial casualty for 2007.

Soon enough, Souths CEO Shane Richardson, a long-time admirer of 'Bomber' McCrae, offered his old friend a new challenge; a lucrative position on the sports administration ladder - the dreaded 'director of football'. Thus, it cast the first bong of the death knell for the former Hull FC and St Helens coach.

Naturally, Souths promptly installed their new recruit, Taylor, as head coach. On the face of it, it was not a surprise decision. Taylor, who took the reigns at Parramatta when Brian Smith left halfway through 2006, led the Eels to a previously unlikely top-eight finals placing - thanks to a nine-match winning streak. The Rabbitohs are now hoping that the rookie coach will weave a similar spell with the wooden spoon incumbents.

It might seem a tad harsh on McRae, shoved aside after just one season in one of the toughest jobs in the NRL. However, like most professional sports, when results are the mainstay of the business, clubs ultimately judge coaches by their team's performance. Although rather than just being sacked, a gut wrencher in its own right, the offer to a respected coach of a 'move upstairs' is an added twist of the knife. Et tu, Shane?

It was obviously a tough personal task for Richardson to promote/demote his good friend. It was effectively a sacking without actually being sacked. The lessened stigma didn't prevent McRae from being thoroughly cut-up over the affair; as he last barely a couple of months in his new role before leaving to pursue a coaching role elsewhere.

There must be a plethora of examples where the director of football/general manager/technical director (*delete as appropriate) and head coach relationship works. Yet we scarcely remember these successful working relationships. Those that soured are the ones that make an embossed imprint on our memories.

Remember back in 1996, when John Dorahy and Alex Murphy were pulling the strings at Warrington? Who was in charge there? I doubt they even knew themselves. The idea was that Dorahy was the coach, picking the team, with Murphy operating as the 'technical director', whatever that means. Any club that employs Alex Murphy with a mere hint of a coaching brief surely knows that he plays second fiddle to nobody. Plus, he's an absolute dream for the press.

Despite this, the two turned Warrington from relegation candidates to top four material and Dorahy always insisted that the working relationship was harmonious. In fact so fruitful that it could not prevent rumours of a rift week-in week-out on the terraces. Of course, the relationship didn't last much longer than a year.

What about when Leeds Rhinos appointed Tony Smith as head coach in 2003? The idea pitched to public was that Daryll Powell would move 'upstairs' into a directorial role for two years while Smith would took the coaching reigns. Then, after two years, Powell would return to the head coach role. No, it didn't make much sense then, either.

What if Leeds were successful in the time under Smith; would they re-instate Powell? Of course not, it's tantamount to commercial suicide. And here we are four years on; Smith is still Rhinos head coach and Powell is plying his coaching trade at the club's Union outlet - Leeds Tykes. Rather than having the guts to say to Powell, 'Thanks for memories, here are your cards and pay in lieu', Leeds shifted him into a pseudo position - a kind of Area 51 where coaching relics are there to be forgotten.

There is no sport more than football where such relationships are so prevalent, and so controversial. Even now, there are rumours of a rift between Chelsea's football manager Jose Mourinho and scouting director Frank Arnesen. It is hard to comprehend that owner Roman Abramovich would sacrifice Mourinho in favour of Arnesen's thoughts on player recruitment. But that's how the rumour has it.

The Roy Evans vs Gerard Houllier saga at Liverpool is the flagship case; the benchmark to which such coaching relationships are measured. The Merseyside club offered Evans, a club stalwart, some managerial help in the shape of the Frenchman, employed not in a fabricated role, but as co-manager of Liverpool. Two men co-working in the same role - it is a flawless recipe for conflict.

There was only one loser here and that was Evans. Rather than let a well-liked and loyal employee like Evans go, they drafted Houllier alongside him, surely knowing that it wouldn't work and Evans would himself despair over the relationship. That is exactly what happened; despite a good start together, a disagreement over team selection sealed the partnership's fate and Evans soon walked out. Obviously, Liverpool never sought a replacement and gave Houllier sole responsibility for team matters.

Robert Tanielu's career cut short

By Antony Stewart

Cowboys chief executive Peter Parr yesterday confirmed the news the club so desperately hoped they would not have to hear - that hard-running prop Robert Tanielu has been forced to retire from rugby league.

The 24-year-old is expected to officially announce his decision to walk away from the sport at Dairy Farmers Stadium today.

Tanielu suffered the second major back injury of his career last season following an awkward collision with former Brisbane winger and now Cowboy Scott Minto that left him with a bruised spinal cord.

Just four years earlier he underwent spinal surgery after breaking his neck while playing for Toowoomba in the Queensland Cup.

While there was some hope the injury would not spell the end of Tanielu's promising career after he had resumed training as part of North Queensland's injured players squad, the assessment by medical specialists meant his decision was all but made for him.

After the New Zealander had a lengthy meeting with Cowboys football manager Kelly Egan early last week, Parr said Tanielu had decided it was time to retire.

"The specialists have recommended that he doesn't continue to play football and, as much as he would like to continue, he won't be able to do so and he has made the decision to put his long-term health ahead of his football," he said.

"That's a tough decision when you are a young man, obviously, but it's the correct decision.

"We, as a club, we indicated to him that it would be negligent of us to encourage him to play and put him back on the field after what we have been told and after the reports we read."

Tanielu, who made his first-grade debut for Brisbane in 2002 and played a handful of games for the Cowboys last season, addressed his North Queensland teammates after training on Saturday.

Despite Tanielu's obvious disappointment, Parr said he had accepted that the decision to retire was the best one for his future.

"He's handled himself particularly well throughout the whole course of this and yesterday (when he addressed the players) was no different," Parr said.

"He handled it very well and the players were obviously feeling for him but I don't think it has been any surprise to anyone, it was probably something that we all were expecting."

Parr said the Cowboys had discussed with the Christchurch native the prospect of taking on an off-field role at the club but Tanielu is expected to move to Brisbane to begin a new career.

Doncaster Lakers sign Alex Rowe

Doncaster Lakers have made an addition to their squad with less than a month to go before they kick off the season against Castleford Tigers in the Northern Rail Cup, at the Keepmoat Stadium on February 11th.

Prop forward Alex Rowe joins the club having made a big impression on his new bosses when playing as a trial-list for Sheffield Eagles in the 'Day After Boxing Day' friendly game as the two clubs played out the first ever sporting match at the new state of the art stadium.

Twenty one year old Rowe, lists Gateshead as his latest club having previously been a member of Castleford's National League winning squad of 2005 and sees the prospect of full time training as a great opportunity to take his career to the next level.

"Full time training was a big factor in joining the club, it will help me improve my game in all respects. The Lakers have a good environment about them and everything is well structured. There are some good players down here and the team spirit is great," he said.

Linking up with fellow Londoners Ade Adebisi and Joe Mbu once again was another reason for joining the club; "Ade and Joe were very complimentary of the club and were a big influence in my decision to join. It always helps when joining a new team if you know some of the guys and I feel part of the team already."

Alex will make his Lakers debut on January 28th against Castleford in the final pre-season friendly before the two clubs clash a fortnight later in the Northern Rail Cup.

The game will be played in memory of St John Ellis, the former Lakers head coach and legendary Tigers winger who tragically passed away on New Year's Eve 2005 after taking a training session.

All proceeds from the game will go towards the 'St John Ellis' fund, in aid of his young family.

Being a Bench Coach

By Brian Smith - Newcastle Knights Head Coach

Written by Robert Rachow

Arguably the greatest challenge for a Rugby League coach is the successful transition from training instructor to game-day director.

While natural instinct and intuition play an important role in completing the step triumphantly, in-depth knowledge and a wealth of experience are over-riding factors.

Continued from Friday

Of course with the advent of unlimited interchange, the number of variables has risen dramatically.

Individual replacements may not be as critical as before, but the frequency and impact with which bench players rotate has certainly soared.

The lateral thinking required to effectively and efficiently substitute players is only developed through a thorough understanding of the team's direction and personal capabilities.

At the precise moment of interchange the coaching staff must assess the amount of stress on the respective players, the amount of energy expelled, time needed for recovery, a suitable warm-up exercise and possible treatment for any injuries.

All this without even considering tactical changes or specific instructions for the various players!

Deciding which players man the bench is almost as difficult as choosing the correct time to interchange them.

Versatility, temperament and fitness levels all play a role in selecting those not in the starting thirteen.

An injury to just one player may mean the entire team needs to be reshuffled or another player will figure in a significantly larger capacity than they have previously.

Other issues to consider include the player's level of nervousness, ability to control their nerves, and impact value."

Rugby League is truly a 17-man game and just because a player is on the bench, it doesn't mean he is worse than anybody who is starting," Brian Smith offers.

"In most cases it means he has attributes that are best suited to entering the game later on.

"Jason Smith was used off the bench at Parramatta and he was arguably the game's best player at the time. It raised a few eyebrows, but it worked and shows that the 13 players that finish a close game are often more significant than the 13 that started it.

"When I interchange my players I try to take them off before they make a mistake as opposed to after they do. It is difficult to pre- empt the action, but by watching the player away from the ball and reading his body language, your chances of making the right decision are increased."

Smith, occasionally switches from coaching in the stands to coaching on the bench. A number of factors encourage him to return to ground level - most of all the personal interaction and eye contact that was not possible from afar.

He believes the relationship between coach and player is far more trusting and understanding when they are seated together in the same environment, without the need for an intermediary.

Smith also recognises the benefits of monitoring his team from an elevated position - namely distancing himself from any emotion and giving himself a better view of opposition weaknesses.

However the coach of three grand final sides says no matter which position you choose, there is always an overriding need for clear and concise communication.

"Communication is the most important facet of coaching on the day of a game," reveals Smith.

"Use short, sharp instructions that emphasise the changes you are trying to implement. Simplify or repeat your message if needed, because if you lack clarity people are going to get sidetracked from what it is you want to achieve.

"You may have to access all sorts of information, including statistics, injury reports or player comments and you need to do it in the shortest time possible."

A real game is a whirling, often chaotic ebb and flow of action with no 'instant replays', so the coach must note, interpret, react and preferably pre-empt continuous sequences of action while remaining focused and composed.

Effective bench coaching is important because it can have an impact, both positive and negative, far beyond the extent of a single game.

The challenge for the coach is to use every match as a learning experience and convert it into a tutorial for players at every opportunity that emerges.
