THE NEWTOWN RLFC is 99 years old today
The Newtown RLFC, Australia's first Rugby League football club, is 99 years old on Monday, January 8th, 2007.

The club was formed at a public meeting in the Newtown Town Hall on the 8th January, 1908 and has always been known as the definitive battlers club, having experienced the highs and lows of the fortunes of the Rugby League game.

Newtown played in the NSW Rugby League premiership competition between 1908 and 1983, before succumbing to a long struggle with soaring costs and disadvantageous social and demographic changes in its confined inner-western catchment area.

The club won first grade premierships in 1910, 1933 and 1943, and narrowly lost to Parramatta in the memorable Grand Final of 1981. Originally known as the Bluebags from 1908 to 1972, they have been called the Jets since 1973.

The Jets re-entered senior Rugby League football in the NSW Rugby League Metropolitan Cup in 1991. They dominated this competition, winning first grade premierships in 1992, 1995, 1996 and 1997, and finishing as preliminary finalists in 1994 and 1998.

The Jets were invited to participate in the NSW Rugby League First Division competition in 2000, and the club is gearing up for its eighth season in the flagship competition of the NSW Rugby League, now known as the NSW Rugby League VB Premier League.

The club entered into a strategic partnership with the famous Sydney Roosters DRLFC in 2006, whereby the Jets became the Roosters' official feeder club and the Roosters' entry in the 2007 NSWRL VB Premier League competition.

Famous Bluebags and Jets personalities in the club's first 98 years have included such famous Rugby League names as the Farnsworth brothers, Charles "Boxer" Russell, Arthur Folwell, Frank Hyde, Herb Narvo, Frank "Bumper" Farrell, Charles "Chicka" Cahill, Len Smith, Noel Mulligan, Dick Poole, Brian Clay, Johnny Raper, Frank Farrington, Jack Gibson, Brian "Chicka" Moore, Lionel Williamson, John Ferguson, Tom Raudonikis, Phil Sigsworth, Colin Murphy, Phil Gould and Craig Field.

Prominent Sydney business identity John Singleton has been a long-standing benefactor and supporter, and has been the club's Official Patron since 1995 and a Life Member since 2005.

Celebrity Jets supporters comprise an eclectic list of names such as actors David Wenham and Tony Barry, Tim Brunero from "Big Brother", legendary WSFM DJ Ron E. Sparks, the Anglican Archbishop of Sydney Dr. Peter Jensen, punk rockers Frenzal Rhomb, Tim Freedman from The Whitlams, entertainer Normie Erskine, NSW District Court Judge Stephen Norrish and the NSW Minister for Education and Training, Carmel Tebbutt.

The Newtown club had a successful season on the field in 2006, with both the VB Premier League team and the Jim Beam Cup side making their respective Grand Finals. Everything points to another big year for the Jets as the oldest club in Australian rugby league moves one year closer to its centenary in 2008. Newtown Jets Online

Sione Faumuina - Duck for cover when outlaw starts blasting

By Chris Rattue

If a problem shared is a problem halved, Sione Faumuina should have his league career back on track with the North Queensland Cowboys.

Having taken his peculiar brand of sporting commitment to London for, oh, a matter of weeks, the errant Faumuina was announced as a Cowboy on Wednesday. Their fans will be beside themselves in anticipation.

What a journey. Having burned every bridge during a tumultuous career with the Warriors, and blown up a couple of highways into the bargain, Faumuina found himself with a three-year contract at Harlequins in London. But he bailed before a ball had been kicked or a teammate derided in anger.

As the Harlequins website put it in the third paragraph of a story themed on pre-season problems, Faumuina returned to New Zealand for family reasons and wouldn't be back. Families, eh? Don't you just love'em? Especially when you need an excuse to get out of town.

Not that the London sports world would be all that bothered. League has been a resident of no fixed abode in the English capital, and gets the sort of space in many London newspapers that would make croquet weep with despair in this country.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a Londoner who would know the difference between a Faumuina and a packet of crisps.

Still, he was their big signing ... and now he's a Cowboy.

So what's really been going on here, and what led the Cowboys - who are coached by the experienced Graham Murray - to take a punt on a bloke who gives teammates, coaches and clubs the punt?

There is a strange twist to this "second chance" story.

The Cowboys sacked forward Mitchell Sargent last year after he tested positive for cocaine. No second chance for Mitch. No drug counselling, therapy, or team apology sessions.

Compared with the sporting norm, Mitch could actually claim a point of honour, since he waived his right to announce that someone had spiked his hair gel and actually admitted that cocaine was found in his system because he took cocaine. A revolutionary approach, but it failed to get him time back on for good behaviour.

Sargent didn't even have outstanding prior form, such as slamming just about everyone over the age of 12 at a testimonial lunch and then giving home fans the benefit of his alcohol-impaired wisdom, as Faumuina did in Auckland.

Abusing your own body is a no-no, but abusing everyone else at another club is just fine.

Maybe the Cowboys thought they were taking a stand on drugs. But in pure football terms, if you were starting from scratch and had the choice of Sione or Mitch, you'd back Mitch as more likely to see out the season.

Anyway, there was good news for Mitch. He was quickly signed by the Newcastle Knights whose boss Ken Conway said: "There are plenty of examples across the community of young people making the most out of a second chance. As a club and as a community we need to take a proactive approach to some of the broader societal issues affecting our players."

Translation: Newcastle needed another prop.

Which brings us back to Faumuina, and why a club would launch a hand grenade with the pin all but removed on its players and fans.

"I mean 100 first-grade games and two tests - I can see Sione doing a hell of a lot more than that. That will be our role, to get Sione back playing test football," coach Murray enthused this week.

Translation: We stuffed up big time last year and we're absolutely desperate for talent.

(Footnote: Faumuina hasn't got a hope in hell of playing for the Kiwis under Brian McClennan.)

The problem for Faumuina is that where ever he goes, his problems go too. It is clear that he has a problem with the bottle allied to behaviour that quickly spins out of control.

His dash to the other side of the world and back was not that of a reasoned man trying to resurrect his career. It was the action of a man desperately searching for answers to problems that he won't accept lie within.

At the Warriors, he was an overly insecure individual who feared everyone was out to get him, with no apparent understanding of how he was contributing to his demise. The Warriors' bigwigs were sick of Sione well before they sacked him, and simply waited until he ticked all the boxes required by employment law.

The Cowboys may be full of optimism, as may Faumuina who revealed he couldn't wait to play with the brilliant Cowboys half Johnathan Thurston. So that's what was missing at the Harlequins.

The question now is what happens, in Faumuina's mind, at the perceived slights: the first time he is dropped, reprimanded at training, criticised in the papers, how he copes when the game doesn't go his way as it won't for a player of his erratic although undoubted skill.

The evidence is that he is a well of insecurity filled with anger waiting to gush out.

Thurston is his hero right now, but who knows? By round three he might be the very man who is wrecking Sione's career, to Sione's way of thinking. If Ruben Wiki ain't safe from his invective, then no one is.

Faumuina has become a story for the 2007 NRL season. But unless he deals with the real problem, it is not one the Cowboys' fans will recount with any pleasure.

Turning your Kick Chase Around

By David Haynes

The age-old adage 'a kick is only as good as its chase' couldn't be truer for ex New Zealand coach Frank Endacott.

Endacott spent "hours" drumming its importance into his chargers.

For him, the kick-chase is all about discipline and keeping the opposition under intense pressure.

Endacott says the recipe for a good kick-chase is simple and revolves around kick placement. "It's very important that when you put the kick down field it turns the fullback and wingers around," he said. "The minute you've done that, you've done your job."

Like Endacott, Roosters new coach Chris Anderson says a good kick-chase game stems from putting the opposition under pressure.

"Try to keep your kicks in play and keep the pressure on the opposition," he said. "Don't go for the touchline unless there is a 40-20 on. Keeping the ball in play makes the fullback work hard, puts the opposition under pressure and it probably takes the opposition three tackles to get organised."

The aim is to trap opposition sides in their own half, enabling the kicking team to gain momentum through good field position.

Although Anderson believes a kick is only as good as its chase, he cites a team's platform as an essential ingredient to the kick-chase game. "The kick is only as good as the platform you set," the dual premiership winning coach said.

"If you kick when your team's not going forward then the kicks going to be 30-metres less than it should be."

To combat this, Anderson says a kick in the line, will enable the kicker to gain maximum ground up field, while simultaneously keeping the chasers onside.
