Nominations for Tamworth Rugby League Sevens slow
Nominations for next month's inaugural Tamworth Rugby League Sevens at Scully Park have been so slow organising officials are considering inviting rugby union clubs.
West Lions club president Dave Dundas, the Tamworth Sevens organiser, said nominations closed January 12 for the February 3 competition.
He is hoping clubs will nominate at this weekend's Group get-together.
"Although a lot of clubs throughout Group 4, 19 and 21 have indicated their intended participation in the gala day, nominations have been slow," Dundas told The Leader yesterday.
"All the clubs have been talking about it but haven't nominated yet. I expect a lot of the clubs to nominate this Sunday at the Group 4 meeting at Gunnedah."
In a surprise move, Dundas suggested to Group 4 President Frank Fish rugby union clubs be invited.
"This will also be discussed this Sunday," Dundas said.
"It would give all rugby codes a day to compete in a fun/social and exciting competition and bragging rights might flow on."
More than $5000 in prize money is being distributed at the Tamworth Rugby League Sevens.
Teams are guaranteed at least three games, with Cup and Plate competitions.
Dundas believes the inaugural Sevens will be well supported by all clubs, both First and Second Division throughout the Northern Division.
"With a nomination fee of only $220 a great day's entertainment is assured," he said.
"It is expected at this stage there may be in excess of nine hours of rugby league. I don't think there has ever been a rugby league sevens in Tamworth and it fits in well with the other Sevens around. The Orara Valley Axemen's Sevens is on the week before and two weeks after we have the Muswellbrook Sevens."
Dundas said the sevens tournaments also provided a perfect lead-in to the Northern Division Pre-Season series, which begins in March.
. Nominations for the Tamworth Rugby League Sevens can be made by contacting Dave Dundas (0408 627511) before Friday, January 12.

Preparing The Junior Representative Team
By Matt O'Hanlon - ARL Level 3 Coach
The first part in this series looked at the preparation required when the coach first met his side. In this second part we will look at some things the coach can do to try and develop the junior rep team.
Continued from Tuesday
As coach you may think this group is behind in skills when really they are developing group dynamics at the same time as taking on new drills and activities.
If the groups are organised so they are not comfortable - and I would suggest this is the best way - stress the use of calling first names throughout the session.
As a result of this, team dynamics will broaden and move away from the singular comfortable groups that are formed prior to team assembly and take on a team dynamic which is free of cliques that can often undermine the culture of the team.
Another benefit of the team culture is that it provides a defence against the malingerer who will take all the shortcuts and can be very damaging to a team because they can lower the potential of the team.
I have also found that keeping the team together at carnivals and championships whenever possible and wearing common team gear for training and to games helps players identify with the team and helps build the all important team culture.
Whilst all of these facets may not seem essential for performance, concentrating on these areas prior to flying into game plans, plays and team skills will provide the foundation for a successful campaign.
If as a coach we forget to establish this communication, team cohesion may take 3 or 4 days to adjust to the new order.
This is time that could have been used more gainfully in other endeavours.
Another area of importance is to see if fitness levels are up to the required standard. At the first session the coach could test players against their stated 12 minute run or the 2.4km distance.
Collate these times and find the average to give information that compares with the previous years. If it is the first time information of this type has been gathered you can use in the future.
If your times seem dissapointing remember they are only an indication of fitness, not of how kids will play in the heat of battle.
To be continued
