Mat Rogers - Return is bad news
By Mick Daly
So Mat Rogers is set to be a Gold Coast Titan next season. Well hip, hip bloody hooray.
Forgive the cynicism, but Rogers's return to rugby league is good for one organisation only - the Australian Rugby Union. Since Rogers announced he was quitting the 15-man game, various NRL stakeholders have hailed it a "win" for league.
Sorry, I just don't get it.
Rattle off as many excuses as you like, but some blokes just can't help themselves. Rogers is one of those.
Just look at his off-field record. Drink-driving, nightclub scuffles, constant brushes with officialdom. And they're the incidents we know about.
Is anyone else sick of hearing about his so-called personal problems?
Rogers has had more than his fair share of personal tragedy with the loss of both parents and his brother overdosing on drugs.
But sport, just like life, is filled with heart-warming tales of athletes, like former Bronco Kevin Walters and cricket's Glenn McGrath, who have pushed through unimaginable private pain to achieve success.
On each occasion, they have done so with dignity, class, courage and humility.
Rogers, two months shy of his 31st birthday, now simply needs to get on with it.
He needs to prove his experiences have made him a stronger, better, wiser person.
Rugby league has plenty of loose cannons. It hardly needs another. But that's exactly what it's about to get.
When Rogers sported a shocking bleach blond hair-do during the 2000 league World Cup, it was embarrassing enough.
You'd have hoped his five years alongside union's private school brigade would have inspired him to clean up his image.
Instead, Eminem has become Tommy Lee, crossed with Keven Federline, and the bright lights of Surfers Paradise his latest party playground.
How the Titans believe his signature is a coup is a deadset mystery.
Sure, he will attract plenty of publicity, but what type of publicity will it be?
And do they really want a mullet enthusiast with feral tattoos, stud earrings and a seeming desire to ride Route '66 on a Harley as the face of their debut season? "Oh, but he's a talent. He's a leader. He's got big-match experience. He's just what the Titans need." Really?
To many, Rogers remains a footballing myth. A ridiculously overrated and overpaid one, at that.
As an attacking weapon, his best ability in rugby was to use his speed and acceleration to swerve and beat a slow defender one-on-one on the outside.
But the last forwards seen on a league field with the athletic prowess of Matt Dunning or Ollie Le-Roux were trudging out for Deception Bay Bombers in the Brisbane Second Division Northside 2 comp six years ago.
Rogers thought he was a ballplayer, a playmaker, a creative spark who deserved to wear the Wallabies' No. 10 jersey. He was wrong.
Mat, it doesn't help when you catch the ball on your chest, take your first steps sideways, spray your kicks, can't pass from left to right, disregard game plans and arm tackle in defence.
And how many NRL games will he actually complete? The league season is twice as long as Super 14 and, some would argue, a trillion times harder.
It's a brutal game of survival, played by the finest of physiques, the toughest of hombres, the fiercest of forces.
If the injury-prone Rogers, with his scrawny teenage skateboarder's body, manages more than a dozen NRL appearances, I'll be stunned.
Don't get me wrong. Rogers will offer spurts of value.
He'll score a few tries, kick a few goals, get a few wraps from ordinary league journos who use the scoresheet as the sole indicator of a player's contribution.
But while he might be the Titans' biggest signing, he could just be their greatest weakness.
So welcome back, M-Rog. Hip hip bloody hooray. Courier Mail

Preparing The Junior Representative Team -
By Matt O'Hanlon -ARL Level 3 Coach
The first part in this series [RLCM Junior Coaching 1]looked at the preparation required when the coach first met his side.
In this second part we will look at some things the coach can do to try and develop the junior rep team.
Selections are now complete and an outline of what is expected and details of competition, tours etc has been provided.
Now there is the job of finding the balance with coaching of communicating and moulding the players into a cohesive team that provides the opportunity for players to:
* Seek further representative honours * Be competitive as a team * Benefit from playing in the team.
Interestingly players will have goals roughly in the above order but as coach your goals may be - or at least I believe they should be - the reverse.
In preparing the team be aware of the standard of competition the team will be playing against and the relative strengths and weaknesses of your players.
If the team is 'weak' the coach will have to reset goals much closer to (c) as opposed to (b). Presented are some areas on which to focus preparations on, for coaching sessions prior to the championships.
Prior to meeting the team think about breaking your preparations into two areas. Firstly, there are a number of areas that the coach can plan and upon which he can have an effect.
Secondly, there are areas that the coach can plan to effect but which may be governed by assumptions that he has have been forced to make.
Some of these include:
* Selected players being able to repeat their performance from trials at the championships * Fitness information provided is accurate and * Player skill levels are adequate
When players don't measure up to these assumptions it can be disappointing but as coach you need to be positive. Don't panic and change from all the preparations but provide the players with a professional well prepared programme that you are familiar with.
The key area to start with is communication. It is essential and needs to be developed rapidly. Many teenagers are self conscious and a coach needs to break down the communication barriers and establish rapport.
Often the quiet youngster who seems uninterested is affected by shyness or is introverted. As a coach there is a need to be careful not to leave this player out because at 'the moment of truth' (i.e. when he takes the field) his shyness disappears in the much more comfortable surrounds of playing footy in the park with his peers.
Likewise, the extroverted or more social youngster may not measure up to the level you thought causing a coach to be disappointed when really the boy may have been playing to his ability.
The coach may have confused his ability to play with his ability to communicate and his extroverted personality and perceived confidence.
