Rogers drama set for final act
THE final act in the ongoing drama over Mat Rogers' future will be played out today with the star back set to be released from his half-million-dollar-a-season rugby union contract.

Unless he has a last minute change of heart, Rogers will be granted release on compassionate grounds.

This will enable him to link with the Gold Coast Titans in 2007 and begin a new life with his partner Chloe Maxwell.

Rogers had signed to join the Titans in 2008 after next year's Rugby World Cup but has become disillusioned with the 15-a-side code and is also dealing with well-documented personal issues.

The 30-year-old dual international will meet ARU chief executive Gary Flowers, general manager Pat Wilson and Waratahs coach Ewen McKenzie in Sydney at 11.30am Queensland time, with all parties sympathetic to his 'special circumstances' following a series of tragedies in the Rogers family.

His mother Carol died of cancer five years ago, his father -- league legend Steve Rogers -- was found dead in January after suffering from depression before his older brother Don was taken to hospital on Saturday following a drug overdose.

Having met Rogers last week, McKenzie was yesterday resigned to losing the backline star.

Titans managing director Michael Searle will allow Rogers some time to relax with family before sorting out playing and contract details for 2007.

"We won't meet with him until the new year," said Searle yesterday.

"He's just come back from a long tour so he needs a rest.

"He also needs some time with his family and to take a break with them.

"We're still very confident that he'll be with us next year."

But Rogers will have to accept less money than he will get in the 2008 season.

Rogers joined the Titans in September on a three-year, $750,000 a season deal but the Gold Coast club cannot afford anywhere near that for next year.

Searle said Rogers was at peace with the situation, and was making a lifestyle decision to come to the Gold Coast a year early.

"Mat is not making a decision based on money here," said Searle.

"He is aware he is going to receive less money in 2007 than he will for 2008.

"We don't have an endless pot of gold here in the salary cap.

"It will be a modest offer to him for the 2007 season, but he understands that."

McKenzie said it was probably best for everyone if Rogers moved on, if that's what he wanted.

"There's sufficient evidence he's got some issues that he needs to get on with and sort out and he probably can't do it in the current environment," he said. Gold Coast Bulletin

Trent Barrett homes in on fresh challenge
By Paul Kendrick
Wigan new-boy Trent Barrett insists he has opted to end his career in England for the immense challenge of proving himself in the Super League, and "not for the money".

The 29-year-old Australian stand-off has joined the Warriors on a three-year deal from NRL outfit St George-Illawarra Dragons, and jetted into the country this week for a gruelling pre-season training programme ahead of the new campaign which starts in early February.

After proving himself one of the premier players in the Australian competition over the past decade, the capture of Barrett is a major coup for both the Wigan club and the English game as a whole.

The Warriors, backed by wealthy owner Dave Whelan, have splashed out in the hope Barrett will help restore the glory days to Wigan - but the player insists he is here for purely on-field reasons.

"I'm definitely not here for the money," Barrett said. "I was well-paid back home and could have stayed.

"But I didn't want to finish my career and regret not coming here. I am quite prepared to be judged by my performances."

The decision to uproot his family and move to the UK was a huge one for the father-of-two, who remained loyal to St George-Illawarra in Australia since turning professional over a decade ago.

"It was a big decision," he admits. "I have been with the one club since I was 17.

"It was hard to pack up and move the family over here but it's something I have wanted to do, and I am looking forward to a good season."

Barrett also revealed his family is already getting acclimatised to a cold winter in the north of England, which is not normally popular with new arrivals from Down Under.

He continued: "We are settling in. We are having a bit of trouble getting around, but we are getting there. We are also getting used to the weather which isn't too bad at the moment.

"I have enjoyed the training and it is good to prove yourself to different people again. I have found that already everyone is really helpful.

"The club finished off last season really well and we have to carry that on at the start. If we prepare right I am sure things will go well."

Barrett is one of four major signings for next term, with Harlequins scrum-half Thomas Leuluai, Leeds hooker Shane Millard and Bradford utility man Michael Withers also arriving at the JJB Stadium.

The combination between Barrett and Leuluai in particular promises to prove pivotal to the Warriors' hopes of challenging for silverware next term, and Barrett says he cannot wait to get started alongside the New Zealand international.

"I am looking forward to striking a combination with Thomas Leuluai, it will take some time but I am sure after a few times we will be right," he added.

"I have goals and ambitions which I will strive to achieve but I will keep those to myself. I will train really hard and settle the family in. If everyone is settled in at home it makes it easy for me."

Darren Lockyer prepares for knife
By Margie McDonald

KANGAROOS skipper Darren Lockyer will have scans on his troublesome left wrist tomorrow with surgery booked for Monday.

Lockyer led Queensland, the Broncos and Australia to Origin, grand final and Test victories this season, the past two in considerable pain.

He said he didn't require painkillers to get through his tough schedule of matches. "But there were several times that for 30 seconds to a minute it would give me a bit of grief," Lockyer said yesterday.

"But it was never a case of stopping me from playing."

He hurt the wrist in the round 23 game playing for the Broncos against Melbourne Storm. "The next day I could hardly move my arm," he said.

But he then played three more premiership games, four finals, and then five Tests for Australia.

"I just had to minimise bending the wrist back in any form. So I did limited contact work in training, passing hurt a little but not really bad.

"Tackling wasn't too bad because I could use my shoulder but if you were gang-tackled and I'd break my fall with my wrist, that would hurt."

Despite the injury, he scored the winning try in extra time against New Zealand in the Tri-Nations final in Sydney on November 25.

He also kicked the field goal that put Brisbane seven points in front in the grand final against Melbourne on October 2.

Needless to say, the Broncos would like him around for the World Club Challenge game against Super League champion St Helens in England on February 23.

"It's nothing major, just a torn cartilage that I need to get it trimmed so the pain will stop," Lockyer said. "They tell me in three to four weeks I'll be right."

Lockyer was at a hospital in Brisbane yesterday to hand over a cheque for more than $16,000 to the Royal Children's Hospital charity. His Test jersey and eye-catching green and gold football boots were auctioned online. The Australian

Graham Murray gives Queensland a helping hand

Click for
Graham Murray on RLCMTV
He may be a Blue to his core, but New South Wales State of Origin mentor Graham Murray will help kickstart the career of some of Queensland's most promising coaches this weekend.

As part of the North Queensland Cowboys' whole-hearted contribution to this year's QRL Summer Coaching Camp in Townville, Murray is set to address 30 Level II coaches at Golf Links Drive on Sunday.

Passing on the benefits of his experience on both sides of the globe, Murray will be joined by the likes of Ian Millward, Kelly Egan, Grant Bell, Matt Parish and Glen Murphy in speaking to the eager participants.

While it's unlikely the king of the Cockroaches will share any Blues' secrets, he and Cowboys staff will deliver a challenging and practical program for the Level II aspirants.

Cowboys head conditioner Murphy, trained by rigid taskmaster Billy Johnstone, has already signaled his intention to put the coaches through ice baths, stretching routines and other physical drills to enhance their education.

The baptism of fire for the coaches sees them begin the camp prior to Monday's influx of junior players, some of whom will travel from as far as Palmerston in the Northern Territory.

On the first day the children are to be greeted by past and present Cowboys Jacob Lillyman, James Andersen and Daniel Strickland.

A State of Origin debutant this year, Lillyman will speak of his own experiences travelling from outback Richmond to QRL Summer Camps in his youth.

Meanwhile Andersen and Strickland will talk about balancing life and football.

Yet to make his NRL debut, 20-year-old Andersen is working towards a career in education, while recently-retired Strickland has been a successful personal trainer for a number of years.

The input of the Cowboys into this year's camp is all-encompassing.

Among 20-odd players set to appear at the camp next week (December 18-22) are stars Matt Bowen, Paul Bowman, Carl Webb, Jason Smith and Ty Williams.

Held at James Cook University, this year's Townsville Summer Camp completely booked out within three weeks, with most places taken on the opening days.

The Toowoomba Summer Camp, which runs concurrently at the University of Southern Queensland, is also fully booked and will feature appearances by both Brisbane Broncos and Gold Coast Titans personnel.

A combined 560 juniors, coaches and first aid officers will attend the camps, a record since they began in 1985 with instructors which included Wayne Bennett, John Monie and Roy Masters.

HOW TO DEVELOP YOUR COACHING:
Guidelines for Sport Coaches
By Anne Thompson

Sports Coach UK Coach Development Officer (Humber Region)

In my experience, the best way to develop your coaching is by pursuing "knowledge for the sake of knowledge".  That is, by seeking knowledge and/or skills development when you want to know or be able to do something in your 'real life' coaching.

This is different from trying to develop your coaching by pursuing "knowledge for knowledge's sake".  That is, by acquiring knowledge and/or skills development just for the sake of acquiring it.

"Knowledge for the sake of knowledge" tends to lead to learning, progress and improvement.  "Knowledge for knowledge's sake" tends to lead to information or skills gathering that isn't applied in any real sense.  The result is little or no learning, progress or improvement.

When coaches ask me for, "any coaching information or drills", or when they say, "do you know of any workshops or courses I could go on", I am immediately alerted to "knowledge for knowledge's sake".  Similarly, when I hear coach development officers or coach educators say, "We need to provide some workshops", I have the same response.

REAL coach development - REAL as in Relevant, Everyday, Applicable and Lasting - by necessity starts with where you are now, and needs to be linked to where you want to be.

Starting with where you are now means the knowledge and/or skills you seek are relevant, linked to your everyday practice, applicable and lasting - rather than being unplaced, unlinked, not applied and short lived.  Likewise, linking where you are now to where you want to be means the knowledge and/or skills you seek are highly likely to move you forward and/or upwards towards your unique personal goal(s).

We all need dreams, ideal visions of the future, and challenges to overcome - these things fuel our motivation.  As long as we can see in our mind's eye the steps we need to take to move forward (what we need to know, what we need to be able to do, or what we need to create), and as long as these steps are sensibly linked to current reality, we will develop and make progress towards your goal(s).

However, too many coaches and people involved in trying to support the development of coaches, either make the mistake of thinking up grand visions of the future that are not linked sensibly to current reality, or make the mistake of not linking the acquisition of knowledge, skills or experience to anything really meaningful in terms of moving towards a personal goal(s).

This is where the need for having a Personal Development Plan (PDP) comes in.  The PDP process supports and challenges you to get clear about: -

· Where you are now.

· Where you want to be.

· What you need to know, be able to do, or be able to create to reach your goal(s) or to overcome your challenge(s).

· How you might go about getting to know, being able to do, or being able to create - the resources (things and people) you can use.

· What you are committed to actually doing and by when.

Once you have a clear plan, all you need do is implement it.  Taking action along these lines makes your development as a coach - your REAL development - inevitable.

If you are interested in developing your coaching, the following table sets out some clear guidelines for you to follow.

Alternatively, if you would like some further support, I am available to provide individual development meetings or to help you set up club/organisational coach development support programmes.
