101 Coaching Tips
Reprinted with permission of the Australian Sports Commission By Les Bee, Wayne Goldsmith, Mike Keelan and Warwick Povey
It takes 20 years to become an overnight success. Successful coaches have a combination of experience, skill, education and practice, developed ways and means of getting the best out of themselves and their athletes.
Here are 101 Coaching tips to help you achieve your coaching goals.
Continued from Friday
85. Body language replaces many words: it's not what you say but how you say it.
86. A nod is as good as a wink.
87. Coaching is a two way process: The athlete feels but can't see - the coach sees but can't feel.
88. Get to know something personal about your athletes. They are people who have chosen to play sport: not just sportspeople.
89. Holistically challenge your athlete - mental skills can be developed just like physical skills.
90. Athletes listen when the coach listens to them.
91. Know when to say NO.
92. Demonstrate, explain, demonstrate again, practice and give constructive feedback.
93. Concentrate on the performance not the outcome.
94 Process goals (how to achieve) should predominate over outcome goals (what to achieve).
95. Facilitate motivation by allowing athletes to fulfil their goals in some way at every session.
96. Coach your athletes to distinguish between attainable and unobtainable but to never stop dreaming of what's possible.
97. Buy a video and refine your filming and reviewing skills.
98. Sports officials give your athletes the best opportunity to achieve the best result - work alongside them.
99. To coach well you'll need to know the CURRENT interpretation of your sports rules and regulations.
100.Coaches have a great opportunity to easily expand their social circle - you'll never be lonely.
101.Last year's programs produce last year's results. Resist the temptation to coach by routine or habit. Concludes

ARL set to approve national youth comp By Glenn Jackson
Proving not all visions in rugby league are fatally blurred, the national youth competition is expected to receive the green light today despite continuing resistance from Queensland.
After the NRL chief executives and the NSWRL board gave backing to the proposal, the only hurdle left in front of plans to introduce the new competition is the ARL board, which meets today in Sydney.
If the ARL opts to rubber-stamp the plan, as expected, the bold yet controversial under-20s tournament - often talked about but until now never more than a blueprint - will begin in 2008.
The planned competition, which will mirror the NRL competition and provide curtain-raisers to first-grade fixtures, has the backing of 14 of the 16 NRL clubs as the game looks to fend off advances by the AFL, which is throwing increasing finances at development in NSW and Queensland.
But Queensland officials believe the game may not be able to meet the costs involved, and that it would undermine the Wizard Cup competition.
"What we're saying is, it would take 400 kids out of the system from country NSW and Queensland, and only a fifth of those players will make it through to the NRL," QRL managing director Ross Livermore said. "And most of them won't come back to the game. We're also saying, here in Queensland, we don't need it."
Livermore, however, is resigned to the competition going ahead, since NSW has the numbers on the ARL board. ARL chief executive Geoff Carr said: "Queensland have always said they won't support it, but they're aware that the NSW numbers are greater than Queensland numbers. That's a fact of life. But there are a lot of concerns from Queensland, so it'll be debated."
The introduction of the under-20s competition is also likely to lead to national under-16 and under-18 competitions. Carr said they would provide a "clear pathway" to the NRL. David Gallop, the NRL chief executive, said the national youth competition would be "an important part of our development strategy - it's not often the clubs are so united on something". He also said it had "money-making possibilities", including the potential for pay-television coverage. SMH
Billy Moore joins the QRL His blood-curdling Queenslander war cry is synonymous with State of Origin. Now Billy Moore is back with the QRL as the new Operations Manager for the Sunshine Coast and South Burnett.
In a major coup for league in one of the State's fastest growing regions, Moore has been appointed full-time, assisting the band of part-time volunteers who have helped develop the region wonderfully in recent years.
Moore joins Dave Pearce as additions to the QRL stable in the past week, with the latter taking on the freshly-created role as Operations Manager for Wide Bay North.
At today's announcement at Maroochydore RSL, Sunshine Coast Gympie Rugby League president Ashley Robinson spoke glowingly of Moore's credentials.
"We're overjoyed that Billy applied for this role,? Robinson said.
"There's a big task ahead of him, but we are very excited about what can be achieved.
"As much as Billy brings a great profile and persona, he is a very accomplished man off the field as well.
"His skills in business have just as much weight as his skills with the football."
Moore, who played 17 State of Origin games for Queensland and three Tests for Australia, wound down his playing career with Kawana on the Sunshine Coast.
He has excelled as a restaurateur, only recently selling his stake in the successful Earth Bistro, an operation he went into blind seven years ago.
Moore, who became a father for the first time this year, notes parallels between what he has learnt in commerce and what he hopes to achieve in his latest challenge.
"The way I see it, this role combines my business sense with my real passion. It's heaven-sent for me," said Moore.
"I?ll be helping to look after the game I love, while remaining living in paradise. Not that there's a bad place to live in Queensland.
"I consider rugby league the biggest and best winter sport in Queensland, but we have to remain at the cutting edge and be aggressive in the marketplace.
"The Sunshine Coast and surrounding regions are booming and it's home to arguably the most competitive mix of sports in the nation.
"One thing I learnt from being in the restaurant game is you have to respect the opposition and see what you can do better in terms of running a professional, highly-tuned operation."
Moore, who also boasts a Bachelor of Science (Physiology) and began a Masters in Exercise Science, will be based at Wises Road, Maroochydore, beginning Monday.
Bundaberg-based Dave Pearce starts as Wide Bay North Operations Manager on January 15. QRL Online

Graham Murray NSW Wizard Blues 2007 coach The NSW Rugby League has confirmed Graham Murray as NSW Wizard Blues head coach for the 2007 Harvey Norman State of Origin series.
Approaching his sixth season as North Queensland Cowboys head coach, Murray was at the helm of a NSW Blues side which came agonisingly close to a fourth consecutive series win in 2006.
NSWRL General Manager Geoff Carr said Murray deserved his selection as the Blues' head coach, highlighting his excellent rapport with the players and his astute knowledge of the game.
Click for Graham Murray on RLCMTV "We think Graham is a quality coach and we're pleased to give him another chance at the job," Carr said.
"It's also very pleasing that North Queensland have endorsed his position as NSW coach, and our thanks go to the Cowboys for their assistance with the matter."
Murray was ecstatic with a chance to spearhead the Wizard Blues' Origin campaign for a second time.
"It always makes you feel proud to be asked to do the job - it's a privilege and something you don't take for granted," Murray said.
"As a player you want to be involved at the highest level and it's nice as a coach to be involved at the highest level as well.
"I'm very pleased the Cowboys were good enough to say I could do it - that's been discussed by us and we've come up with strategies and plans specifically for that period, and I really appreciate the club's support." NSWRL Online
Warren Williams signs for 2007 with Cowra Magpies RLFC Cowra Rugby League has landed a major coup with the announcement that the club has signed former outstanding U18s five-eighth Warren Williams for the 2007 season.
Williams guided Cowra U18s to a Group 10 premiership win in 2004 before being lured to West Tigers lower grades in 2005 and 2006 seasons.
He was playing brilliant football when he left for Tiger Territory and will no doubt have valuable experience during his time there.
Further good news for the Magpies is the signing of Williams' former U18s teammate Dave Merritt another brilliant player at his top.
In late signing news for the Magpies the club has also gained the services of rugged Will Ingram who played last season with the Newton Jets.
He will fit in nicely with his brothers Phil Ingram who is likely to have the halfback spot and Steve who was outstanding in the centres in the Cowra First Division 2006 premiership win.
A powerful hard hitting centre with good pace he is a strong contender for a premier league centre spot.
One of Cowra's best forwards last season Jason Carney has also signed for 2006 joining another top prop Ben McKenna from Blayney.
Winger-fullback Jay McLintock will also be back which must be encouraging for captain coach Dean Corrigan.
Last season's U18s stars Ricky Whitton (half) along with promising forwards Zac Dalton, Dave Morgan and Andrew Dunkley are also back.
Training sessions have been pleasing at Holman Oval, however there will be a change of venue after Christmas with training to go up a notch or two at Sid Kallas Oval. Cowra Online

NZRL to discuss Fien this week The New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) board ran out of time on Friday and deferred discussing several issues, including a report on the Nathan Fien saga, until this week.
Chief executive officer Peter Cordtz said the board had a big agenda, including budgeting and programming for next season, and some of the issues it had hoped to complete have been deferred.
Australian-born Warriors utility player Fien played for the Kiwis in the Tri-Nations in spite of not being eligible through family ties.
The NZRL, through chairman Selwyn Bennett, thought Fien was eligible through a Wanganui-born grandmother, but further investigations determined it was his great-grandmother who was born in New Zealand.
Fien left the team before the end of the competition and as a result of the debacle Bennett resigned as the chairman.
The Kiwis were docked two competition points. The Kiwis still reached the final, which they lost 16-12 to Australia. NZ Stuff
Australian Schoolboys Win First Test 36 - 22 The Australian Schoolboys Rugby League side continued on its winning way on its current Tour of England, Wales and France with a win in the first test against the England Academy side.
Australia 36 (Tries - Joel Thompson, Shannon Walker 2, Chris Lawrence, Obadiah Geia 2, Nathan Strudwick Conversions - Chris Sandow 4)defeated England 22 (4 tries and 3 goals)
The match was worthy of test match status and was very much "a match of two halves".
The English academy had the best of the first half with three tries off the back of Australian mistakes.
The only points for the Aussies came off two kicks into the opponent's in-goal.The first was from a Chris Sandow kick that was fumbled by the winger with Joel Thompson diving on it for a 4 pointer.
The second in the 27th minute saw a try to winger Shannon Walker after a well placed kick by Mitchell Pearce to the same corner. The half time score was England 16-8 with the Aussies needing plenty to get back in the game especially with Joseph Paulo in the sin bin for 10 minutes (including 7 minutes of the 2nd half).
Australia was under pressure for the first five minutes of the 2nd half courtesy of some errors.
However, a 60- metre try to Chris Lawrence out on the left edge sparked a remarkable period of try scoring for the Australian Schoolboys. Chris Sandow converted to bring the score back to 16-14.
Just 4 minutes later Obadiah Geia ran 35 metres to complete a good backline movement and scored wide out on the right side. With the conversion by Sandow the Australians were in front for the first time by 20-16.
Three minutes later a bust by centre Israel Folau and offload to winger Obadiah Geia saw him run 40 metres down a very narrow corridor to score a great wingers try.
The score was now 24-16. When the Aussies scored again in the 18th minute after a break by backrower Kevin Proctor who then passed to Shannon Walker who ran further 60 metres to score, it was obvious that the Australian Schoolboys had gained supremacy.
The conversion by Sandow took the score out to 30-16.The Aussie were not yet finished with another 60 metre try just 4 minutes later, engineered by a line break from Mitchell Pearce sending hooker Nathan Strudwick on a 40 metre run to the line.
Another conversion by Sandow saw the Aussies with an commanding 36-16 lead.
A late try and conversion to the Academy saw the final score Australian Schoolboys 36 England Academy 22.
Coach Simon Huntly was extremely pleased with the overall effort and commented on the outstanding attacking ability of the team to be able to put on 5 tries in the space of just 12 minutes against a quality opposition in the English Academy.
However, he cautioned his side that the job was not yet complete and that the Academy would be even tougher opponents in the second test at Widnes next Friday night. ASSRL Online
