RUGBY LEAGUE PLAYED IN SERBIAN HIGH SCHOOLS
A three match sevens series has launched high school rugby league in Serbia. A mixed team of Belgrade's Tech Schools and Gymnasia took on Gymansium St Sava at Ada Ciganlija, coming from behind to take the series 2-1 thanks to a golden point try in the final encounter.
Haris Daj, the Chairman of SRL Referees Organization and Serbian international Dalibor Vukanovi took control of the matches, with the sides coached by fellow internationals Marko Jankovi (Tech Schools and Gymnasia) and Soni Radovanovi (Gymnasium St Sava).
The presence of three Serbian under 19's from their European Nations Cup side in the Tech schools and Gymnasia team decided the outcome but both outfits deserved their ovations.
Nika Unkovi was the Tech's star, scoring hat tricks in the second and third clashes, including the deciding score. Next on the development agenda are plans for each of the schools to enter their own sides in a mini league competition.

Andrew McFadden joins Catalans Dragons as assistant coach
Former Canberra Raiders half-back Andrew McFadden has joined Catalans Dragons as assistant coach.
The 28-year-old McFadden has signed a two-year contract with the French Super League club and fills the vacancy caused by the departure of fellow Australian Paul Donkin.
He will quit his current job as Canberra's Premier League coach and will arrive in Perpignan early January to become right-hand man to Mick Potter.
"Andrew's signing will be a boost for our coaching staff and his experience and dynamism will help the club in 2007," said Catalans chief executive Nicolas Rayer.
McFadden joins a new-look backroom staff as the Dragons seek to climb the Super League ladder after collecting the wooden spoon in their inaugural season.
French international stand-off Laurent Frayssinous has hung up his boots to become kicking coach and another Australian, Rodney Howe, has taken over as conditioner from Matt Adamson.

Wigan sign Thomas Leuluai, Michael Withers and Shane Millard
Wigan have finally completed the high-profile close-season captures of Thomas Leuluai, Michael Withers and Shane Millard.
New Zealand scrum-half Leuluai joins the Warriors on a three-year deal from Harlequins, while full-back Withers, who has moved from Bradford, and ex-Widnes and Leeds hooker Millard have signed two-year deals.
The 21-year-old Leuluai, who has won six caps for the Kiwis, is a direct replacement for scrum-half Michael Dobson, who has returned to Australia.
Millard, 31, fills the gap caused by the departure of back-up hooker Wayne Godwin to Hull.
Coach Brian Noble said: "The three signings bring a nice blend of youth and experience.
"Thomas should be an excellent partner for Trent Barrett. He is only young at 21 years of age and will hopefully be set for a long and successful career at Wigan.
"Shane and Michael will bring terrific experience to our young side."
The 30-year-old Withers, who made 170 appearances for the Bulls, teams up again with his former boss Noble and is expected to take over the full-back role from youngster Chris Ashton.
"It's always special for any rugby league player to sign for Wigan and I am looking forward to joining up with Brian Noble again," said Withers.
Leuluai said: "Wigan is a famous club in New Zealand and there has been a long and famous association between Wigan and some great Kiwi players. I am really looking forward to forging a long career with Wigan."
Leuluai will arrive over the next couple of weeks at the club while Withers and Millard will join the club for pre-season training in the new year.

Mat Rogers threatens to strike
Wallaby star Mat Rogers will consider sitting out next season -- and forfeiting a $500,000 salary -- unless the Australian Rugby Union releases him from the final year of his contract.
Rogers, who has signed with the Gold Coast Titans for 2008, has told officials the tragic death of his rugby league legend father Steve was a factor in his decision to sign with the Titans and plan a future away from Sydney with partner Chloe Maxwell and their baby son Max.
"Chloe in particular has been through so much with me in such a short period of time, so I did it for us more than anything," he said.
"I needed to start again."
The fresh start may now come a year earlier than planned -- and just nine months before the Wallabies' campaign for the World Cup in France -- with Rogers apparently sounding a warning that he is prepared to stand down from all rugby if the ARU and NSW Waratahs are not prepared to let him go.
Any such move would be unprecedented in the professional era and would strip Rogers of his $10,000-aweek earnings.
Rogers met Waratahs coach Ewen McKenzie on Monday, and yesterday left for a week's holiday as behind-the-scenes talks start between the NSWRU and ARU.
The Waratahs are thought to be sympathetic to Rogers's desire for a release.
But the ARU would also have to approve the undoing of a three-way contract that ties the player to the provincial and national bodies.
It is understood there may be resistance within the ARU, spawned by concerns that releasing Rogers back to rugby league would set a dangerous precedent.
There is even a suggestion that if Rogers wants to move to the Gold Coast he could stay in rugby and play for the Queensland Reds.
Titans managing director Michael Searle said yesterday he had had no further contact since the pair briefly met at a golf day last week.
Searle is keen for Rogers to play for the Titans next year but will only broach the subject formally if the Wallaby utility is released by the ARU.
He also said he would be shocked if Rogers was to not play either code in 2007. "I would be very surprised if he did sit out next year," he said.
"He enjoys playing footy -- that is why he wants to come back to league with the Titans."
The Rogers controversy first broke on his return from the European tour last week when he expressed disappointment over his relegation to the bench for the final two Tests against Ireland and Scotland.

Tingha Tigers still serious about return to Group 19
THE Tingha Tigers Rugby League Club's plans to return to Group 19 next year continue, despite just 15 people attending Sunday's annual general meeting.
Many of its members were involved in the fishing festival and were unable to make the meeting, but club spokesman Chris Curtin said the club remains serious about returning to first division league.
"We had just as many apologies and have rescheduled the meeting for mid-January where the committee will be elected and coaches appointed," Curtin said.
Former NRL player and local resident Nathan Blacklock showed his support at the meeting.
"He wants to become involved in the club and put forward some good ideas on development and promotion," Curtin said.
"It's still early days yet for us, but there is plenty of enthusiasm from those interested.
The club plans to nominate a first and reserve grade team and will advertise for coaches prior to the next meeting.
At the meeting the coaches will be decided and pre-season training will start.
* The meeting will be on January 14 at the Tingha Sport and Recreation Club starting at 2pm.

Halifax RLFC need to know of redevelopment of the Shay
By Rehana Zeria
Fans of Halifax Town and Halifax Rugby League Club need to know about possible redevelopment of the Shay, the town's MP said today.
Linda Riordan said: "The public must be involved in these discussions. At the end of the day it is the ratepayers who may fund this development and I think it is something they should know about.
"We do need the stadium developing. Calderdale is one of the biggest metropolitan boroughs without one.
"The longer we leave the work that is needed at the Shay, the more expensive it will become for everyone."
Over the weekend a meeting was held by the Shay working group of Calderdale Council with the group's trustees The Shay Stadium Trust Limited, and PMP Consultants which had prepared a report on the future of the stadium, funded by a council grant.
Discussions from the meeting have been kept under wraps but calls have been made for more public involvement.
David Sampson, owner of Sam's Menswear at Halifax Borough Market, said: "For years we would go to watch the rugby but nothing was done to the ground which was left half finished.
"It just became embarrassing to watch.
"This is why I think if a meeting is being held that somehow affects the public then I think the people should be kept informed."

Ken Kennedy will take on Wingham Tigers
By Mick McDonald
Wingham Rugby League Club expects new first grade coach Ken Kennedy to take up duties early in the new year.
Negotiations with the Mackay-based Kennedy were finalised last week. A former Nowra player, Kennedy has been based in the north of Queensland for the last few years.
He will be a non-playing coach with the Tigers.
"It's good to get it all settled," Wingham secretary Wayne Bridge said.
Kennedy holds a level three coaching certificate and has a proven record.
"Just about every side he has been involved with has made the semi-finals of better," Bridge said.
There's a possibility a halfback from the Wollongong area could also be shifting to Wingham and Bridge said negotiations are continuing.
The Tigers have endured two lean seasons in first grade after winning back-to-back premierships in 2002-2003 then making the 2004 grand final.
However, last season Wingham won the under 18 premiership and were finalists in reserve grade.
Bridge said Wingham will officially start training in mid-January. The club will hold a family bowls day this Sunday at Wingham Bowling Club from 10am. This is for all players and supporters.
As previously reported Brendan Summerfield will captain-coach Wingham's reserve grade with Tim Welsh in charge of the under 18s.
Meanwhile, it was reported in the summer edition of Rugby League Week that Group Two club Port Macquarie Sharks have signed Wauchope five-eighth Aaron IIson for the 2007 season.

Learning centre at Wakefield will keep youngsters on the ball By Joanne Ginley
WAKEFIELD Council is joining forces with the city's rugby league club to launch an out-of-hours support programme for schoolchildren in the district.
The project will see a Learning Zone centre officially open at Belle Vue, home of the Wakefield Wildcats, which will focus on raising standards in literacy, numeracy and ICT skills for youngsters in the Wakefield district.
It will work mainly with pupils between the ages of nine to 14 who have been identified as at risk of under-achieving.
The Learning Zone will work in partnership with local schools, to help provide a positive educational experience for children and an opportunity for pupils to develop fresh ways of learning.
The children will attend the Belle Vue ground for lessons after hours. They will be given a mentor and get a chance to meet players. It is hoped the chance to learn outside the classroom with the aid of a mentor will motivate them to attain educational success. It will be officially opened today.
Cabinet member for children and young people, councillor Wayne Jenkins, said: "Students in the district will really benefit from the Playing for Success scheme.
"It is about learning rather than teaching and gives young people the opportunity to develop their own identity and self-belief. It's our intention to help every pupil succeed by providing a positive educational experience."
Mark Winder, the manager of the Learning Zone, added: "In working towards these educational goals with local young people, we will make full use of the positive effect created by an association with both Wakefield Council and a successful Super League club like the Wildcats.
"We will boost the self-esteem of each pupil, by placing them in a supportive environment with good role models from the fantastic community we have here in Wakefield."

New coach Dave Woods predicts exciting times Gateshead Thunder By Jeff Bowron, The Journal
Gateshead Thunder, whose prospective new coach Dave Woods flies into England tomorrow, will face York City Knights in both their Northern Rail Cup and National League Two opening fixtures in 2007.
York, the Tynesiders' nearest neighbours and the best supported club in NL2, kick off the season at the Thunderdome on February 11 and then return on Good Friday to start the league campaign.
The Easter fixture may be switched to Newcastle Falcons' Kingston Park stadium after Gateshead's last home game against York was taken across the river and attracted a seasonal best crowd of 705.
Australian Woods is expected to sign a three-year deal to become a re-formed Thunder's first overseas coach and will take his first training session on Thursday.
Woods, believes his meeting with Gateshead officials will be a formality and is already confident of making an impression in the Northern Rail Cup.
Thunder, traditionally in the NRC Cumbrian group, will this time play six qualifying games against first division Halifax, relegated York and National League Two rivals Keighley Cougars.
"I'm happy with the Northern Rail Cup draw," said Woods. "I'm hoping we can win all our home games and then at least two of the away games. I would like to go as far as we can in that competition.
"It would be great to get to Blackpool again in the final as it was a great experience the last time with Castleford."
Woods took the Tigers to the NRC final during his one year at Castleford in 2005, where they lost 18-16 to Hull Kingston Rovers in front of a 9,400 crowd.
The 41-year-old also took Castleford back into Super League that year and is confident he can take Gateshead into the knockout phase of the NRC for the first time and push for promotion.
"Promotion is the big one as we need to get Gateshead Thunder into the first division," added Woods. "The future is bright for rugby league on Tyneside."
Woods has lined up overseas players including two Fijian internationals who have been playing in the recent World Cup qualifiers for their country. Thunder, however, could lose ten players from last season's mid-table squad.
Record appearance holder Kevin Neighbour has already joined Australian outfit ShellHarbour Marlins.
Forwards Rob Line and Tabua Cakacaka have linked up with Swinton Lions and York respectively. But Australian centre Mark Christensen is set to re-sign.
