The gap is as wide as ever By Phil Gould - THE ANALYST AUSTRALIA'S belting of Great Britain confirmed several things about our national team and international rugby league.
When the Kangaroos play to their true ability, they're far too good for their opponents. Several times during the past decade the Aussies have played poorly and lost to Great Britain or New Zealand. They then use the criticism they receive as motivation to win easily at their next meeting.
The irony is that by bouncing back so strongly they actually prove their critics right. Australia's elite players are very special talents and should never lose - not to Great Britain anyway, because they're clearly not good enough.
Many in England have taken umbrage at my comments that their domestic competition is of a poor standard and their national team suffers from amateurish ways. Quite simply, there's too big a difference between their best and their worst performances - and sometimes we get these in the same half of football.
Their best is pretty good. However, their worst is horrible and all too frequent. They beat Australia two weeks ago but have been belted 77-14 in two games since. There's no consistency in their intensity.
They enjoy good passages of play but follow up with a diabolical series of fundamental errors. They can display great courage and resolve, then inexplicably spoil it with the most uncaring of efforts.
They bunch when tired. Their "off the ball" disciplines are poor, to say the least. Their attack often stalls into the farcical scene of players standing still and slowly passing the ball to each other, hoping someone runs with it.
They don't possess the acute anticipation of danger that has been instilled in Australian players, which is indicative of a limited football education rather than lack of desire.
But the saddest thing about Great Britain's supporters is their total denial or awareness of these problems. Occasionally the Brits will keep the scores close or even beat Australia and this gives them false justification for their ways and misplaced hope for the future.
Don't blame the messenger for the message. If the Brits really want to seriously compete with Australia and New Zealand on the international stage they have to change their thinking and the way they develop their domestic competition.
They have some very good individual players but sadly they'll never realise their full potential unless they come and play in Australia. That's a sad indictment on England.
The gap is as wide as ever
Anyway, back to Australia.
Darren Lockyer was great. He scored a try and had a hand in four others. He was more effective because he had less to do and this allowed him to concentrate on quality rather than quantity.
A few things contributed to this.
Cameron Smith was allowed to play his natural game from dummy half. This assisted our forwards to be more dominant over the advantage line. The return of Johnathan Thurston to halfback made a huge difference to the attack. It was an absolute travesty of justice this kid was dropped two weeks ago and he proved this on Saturday night with a man-of the-match display.
Australia's attack looked faster, more potent and infinitely less predictable with Thurston in control.
Case closed.
Thurston and Smith were a constant annoyance to Great Britain with their probing runs and short passing raids through the middle of the ruck. But it goes to show that if you want to gain maximum benefit out of Lockyer's unique skills and talents, then everyone else has to do their job better and allow him to chime in when the opportunities arise.
Just hitting the ball up for a couple of rucks before spinning it two passes wide to Lockyer so he can hopefully weave some magic is not what I see as an optimum use of resources.
That was our game plan two weeks ago and we suffered an embarrassing defeat. Encourage everyone else to contribute more and let Lockyer join the action when he sees fit - that's a sure-fire formula for success.
The Aussies will get much sterner opposition from the Kiwis in next week's final but I have unshakeable belief in our game's best players and I know they'll rise to the challenge.
It's the last game of the year, boys. Bring the trophy back home.
Golden Boot tipped to fit skipper AUSTRALIA captain Darren Lockyer is the favourite to win the Gillette Golden Boot award as the world's best player at a function in Sydney tonight. Kiwis coach hails Lockyer NEW Zealand coach Brian McClennan yesterday said Australia skipper Darren Lockyer was destined for immortal status. Kite lifts after Stuart adjusts the lines IF BRENT Kite thought he was being promoted to the starting side for Saturday night's Tri-Nations showdown with Great Britain, he was in for a rude shock. Back, bigger and better than ever BENJI Marshall has packed on six kilograms of muscle since having shoulder surgery to ensure he comes back bigger and better next season. Kangaroos far too slick as gritty Lions are outplayed AUSTRALIA saved their best for the end to send the Great Britain players on an early flight home from the Tri-Nations last night. Kiwis question Kaufusi's Australian eligibility NEW Zealand officials attempted to block Antonio Kaufusi from making his Test debut against Great Britain last night by questioning his eligibility to play for Australia. Hey, let's try something new - give Lockyer some ball MARK down last night as surely the end of another rugby league myth. Darren Lockyer does work as a playmaker, rather than simply a player. `Out' offer to renegade Titan Steve Turner By Luke Turgeon RENEGADE Titan Steve Turner has been offered a 'get out of the Gold Coast' clause after just one season if he is unhappy living on the glitter strip.
In a move designed to speed up negotiations with the winger, Titans chief executive Michael Searle said he put the deal on the table because he believes that once Turner finally makes it to the Coast the 22-year-old won't want to leave.
"What we have done as part of the negotiations is that I have offered to his manager that we would consider releasing him on October 31 if he didn't want to stay," said Searle. "It basically means there would be an out clause within 12 months if he was uncomfortable with the place.
"He has been saying that he is not comfortable coming here, but this shows that we are operating in good faith. We would like to think he would at least come here and experience it first.
"From our point of view, if he comes here and tries it and doesn't enjoy it, then he is free to go.
"If he wants to go back to Melbourne after that then good luck to him. I will drop him off at the airport if he wants.
"But I would be very surprised if he came here and didn't want to stay long term."
Turner verbally agreed to a three-year contract with the Titans in June before getting cold feet and re-signing with the Storm a month later.
The NRL has made it clear they will not register Turner's new contract with the Storm, believing he should honour his commitment to the Gold Coast.
As a result, Turner's only real options are to play for the Titans or sit out the next three seasons.
"If they do decide to go to court this dispute could be more than 12 months in the courts anyway," said Searle. "The 12-month offer shows the club is acting in good faith, the way it has done throughout the entire process.
"We are empathetic that he may be thinking twice about his decision but it doesn't remove the obligation to his original commitment.
"But that (the one-season deal) would only be if he came here.
"If he doesn't he is sitting on the sidelines for the next three years."
The news follows reports at the weekend that the Titans were offered the services of Queensland centre Adam Mogg and financial compensation in exchange for letting Turner remain in Melbourne. Turner's manager Dave Riolo did his best to broker the deal, which would have seen Mogg abandon plans to join English Super League club Catalans.
But the deal fell through when Melbourne would not meet the compensation criteria.
"The number of offers that were put to us for players to substitute were wide and varied," said Searle.
"The most likely one was Adam Mogg, but at the end of the day it wasn't an easy deal to achieve and Melbourne thought that the compensation request was too much for them." Gold Coast Bulletin

Learn from Neil Henry on RLCM DVD "There are different shapes that you can use. Some teams use two block runners on the outside with an inside support.
"It gives you opportunities to tip the ball back on the inside to drop someone off on the inside, a man on the inside or, to play to one of two options on the outside and then have a sweeper out the back as well."

101 Coaching Tips Reprinted with permission of the Australian Sports Commission By Les Bee, Wayne Goldsmith, Mike Keelan and Warwick Povey
It takes 20 years to become an overnight success. Successful coaches have a combination of experience, skill, education and practice, developed ways and means of getting the best out of themselves and their athletes.
Here are 101 Coaching tips to help you achieve your coaching goals.
Continued from last week
13. Seek out information - don't wait for the "secret to success" to fall into your lap.
14. Coach with your heart but don't forget the basics. Secure adequate training facilities, keep good records, observe O.H. and S. principles, maintain a commitment to safety and equity. Having the 'nuts and bolts' organised allows you to focus on what you do best - working with athletes.
15. Believe in your athletes - they believe in you.
16. Steal ideas from other sports (and improve on them)
17. Strive to make yourself redundant - develop independent athletes.
18. Listen with your eyes and watch with your ears.
19. Attitude + application + ability = achievement.
20. Coach the person not the athlete. Coach the person not the performance.
21. Develop a network and support structure. Be a resource manager.
22. Best, better, brilliant - there's always room for improvement.
23. What you believe will happen will happen. What the mind can conceive it will achieve.
24. Persistence pays - never give up.
