Half measures fail the test
By Phil Gould
ANALYSIS
WHY wasn't Johnathan Thurston playing halfback for Australia on Saturday night? And why didn't more people raise this question once it was announced Thurston was being replaced by St George Illawarra utility back Ben Hornby?
Since when have Australia ever rested the game's No.1 halfback for a Test match against Great Britain, especially when it's played here in Australia?
These historic matches don't come around often enough to justify denying someone the opportunity to play in one of these games, especially when they've thoroughly earned the right to do so.
His omission has shown the importance of history, the Australian Test jersey, Great Britain and Thurston no respect whatsoever.
The position of halfback in the Australian rugby league team is one of great importance and prestige. It's a job that must be earned and should never be open to experiment.
Many players in the NRL could handle playing halfback for Australia; but only a special few ever earn the right.
It's like the wicketkeeper position in Australian cricket team. Think Rod Marsh, Ian Healy, Adam Gilchrist - "one-in-an-era" players. Sure, selectors may occasionally rest the main man for a tour game, but never for the main event.
A Test match in Australia against Great Britain is a chance for our elite young players to walk in the footsteps of past greats and make their own mark in history.
Sadly, Great Britain seldom travel to Australia these days. For Thurston, this was a rare opportunity to be a part of such a memorable event. It's like playing in the Boxing Day cricket Test, or getting a ride in the Melbourne Cup.
Thurston earned this special moment but instead was forced to watch from the sidelines while a utility player took his spot. The people responsible should know better.
Everyone who selects this team is a former Test footballer. How would they feel if their chance to play a Test against Great Britain on home soil in front of family and friends was handed to a player who didn't even specialise in that position?
Thurston is entitled to be filthy with this unfair treatment. They said he was being rested; however, they also suggested Australia wanted to improve their combination in the halves. Quite clearly these two explanations are contradictory.
After all, why would he need a break? Injury forced him to miss five weeks' football before this year's semi-final series, and the Australian team also had the bye last weekend. He didn't need a rest and he certainly didn't deserve to be dropped.
Thurston was 2005 Dally M and players' association player of the year. This season he helped lead Queensland to Origin glory against all odds.
Australia won their first two Tri-Nations games against New Zealand with Thurston at halfback and he was awarded man of the match in game one.
He's clearly the best halfback in Australia and should be left there for at least the next three years to develop his combination with the great Darren Lockyer.
Don't get me wrong, Hornby is a fine player. I like him. His versatility could be well utilised coming off the bench to cover for injuries during a game. But he's not even the regular halfback with his own club.
Maybe if they were on tour in England and playing Blackpool in a midweek game you could justify giving Hornby a hit-out. But a Test match in Sydney against Great Britain? Never!
Thurston's omission was a disgrace. Australia's attack didn't click into top gear at any time. Quite simply, they dumped all attacking responsibility into the lap of five-eighth Lockyer and, despite his best efforts to produce the winning plays, the predictability of this game plan aided Great Britain's defensive assignment.
The Kangaroos are capable of much better, and I suggest with this kick in the pants now firmly administered, they'll lift their game and go on to win this Tri-Nations series.
Take nothing away from Great Britain, though. It was their night. This match was a test of their credibility, and they delivered. They played with great passion and resolve and thoroughly deserved their success. Well done, lads!
It also helped their motivation that Australia treated them with such disrespect. Thurston should feel the same way, too. SMH

Learn from Neil Henry on RLCM DVD "There are different shapes that you can use. Some teams use two block runners on the outside with an inside support. It gives you opportunities to tip the ball back on the inside to drop someone off on the inside, a man on the inside or, to play to one of two options on the outside and then have a sweeper out the back as well." Neil Henry, Assistant Queensland Coach, Assistant NQ Cowboys Coach, 2007 Canberra Raiders Coach.
The FOURTH ELEMENT in coaching Rugby League
By Bob Wood
ARL Level 2 Coach
There are four elements in coaching Rugby League: physical, technical, tactical, mental.
The proportion in which these elements are coached depends on the age group and experience of your team.
The old style of coaching focused heavily on the first element. This would involve long runs and heavy physical work, although you can still see many teams on suburban ovals being run into the ground.
The second element (technical) should be one of the main focuses for junior teams. This involves teaching the skills of the game such as tackling technique, passing and evasion.
The third element (tactical) generally comes into play in mods and international rules teams. This involves zone plays, defensive patterns and game plans.
However, most coaches only employ the first three elements ignoring the fourth (mental). Often this is because they don't know how to coach this element, and yet it is the most important of all the four elements.
The 'fourth element' should be coached from juniors through to NRL level. When I first started getting interested in coaching the mental skills of the game, I researched how mental skills were coached at the elite level of many sports.
All of them dealt with visualisation techniques, goal setting, techniques for focusing such as 'black box' techniques, and the use of medical professionals (including hypnotism).
All of this seemed out of reach for a junior team, although I did have some success with visualisation and goal setting.
