Leeds likely lad could be another Schofield
UNLIKE some Britain team-mates, five-eighth Danny McGuire is not in a rush to join the NRL. It has nothing to do with Australia, as a tanned McGuire makes clear while relaxing at the Lions' northern Sydney beaches hotel base for the Tri-Nations tournament -- it's just that McGuire is a Leeds boy through and through, a local kid made good.

"To be honest with you, I am really happy at Leeds and I am a Leeds lad," McGuire says, in a thick Yorkshire twang. "I have come through the system there and I have a few years left on my contract. When that happens, I would definitely say Australia is an option.

Great Britain? Sorry, Brian, your lot are average at best
I WILL laugh at the next person who tries to tell me the English Super League is catching up to the standard of the NRL. Great Britain opened their Tri-Nations campaign with a defeat to New Zealand in Christchurch on Saturday night and I believe they'll go through this series without a victory. Two tries in the final 10 minutes brought respectability to the score, but they were never going to win.

After two straight losses to Australia, New Zealand opted for a grinding style of play to ensure their first success of the series. It was a physical encounter but the Kiwis handled their assignment comfortably. They had the game well in hand with a 16-point lead midway through the second half before their worrying habit of conceding late points reared its ugly head. This has to be a concern for coach Brian McClennan and he'll need to toughen their resolve at the back end of games, especially when they play Australia.

Great Britain are well off the pace in this competition. They might be capable of the occasional upset against Australia or New Zealand with the aid of a referee giving them plenty of latitude in front of 50,000 fans on a cold night in Manchester, but Great Britain and English club teams are always badly exposed when they visit this part of the world. They try hard, but have never adequately addressed the weaknesses shown in their football for the past three decades.SMH

Clock gives Brit coach a bad time
That ugliest of sporting words - cheating - has entered the Tri-Nations arena. British coach Brian Noble is at the centre of a row which started when the British made justified complaints about the timekeeping at Jade Stadium during their loss to the Kiwis.

Events hit boiling point on the sideline after the game, when Noble at least implied to match controller Bryce Wakely that the errors were deliberate. Wakely said the British coach approached him after the final hooter and fumed: "This will be on your conscience for the rest of your life."

Wakely said Noble's words "really pissed me off at the time. I've got no doubt at all that he was implying I cheated". Read more NZ Herald

It was only a cat slap: Morley
GREAT Britain enforcer Adrian Morley has described his punching of New Zealand's Brent Webb as "a cat slap" and revealed he was more worried about being charged over a high tackle on Ruben Wiki. The former Sydney Roosters' hardman was yesterday cleared for an Aussie Stadium "homecoming" after being cleared of both incidents. "He elbowed me and I just gave him a cat slap back. There was nothing in it," Morley told The Daily Telegraph. Read more Foxsport

Thugby league not way forward
THE Tri-nations has become a gilt-edged invitation to on-field mayhem. The escalation of player violence in matches so far, and the accompanying lack of action from referees and judicial figures, suggests we're a play-the-ball or two away from an unchecked free-for-all.

Expectations from players and supporters are higher than that. The days of encouraging player violence are long gone. What some supporters applauded as fiery incidents, especially against Great Britain, are now antiquated and unprofessional. Foxsport Online

RUGBY LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL - GREECE 44 SERBIA 26 - Glyka Nera Football Club, Athens
The first international played on Greek soil saw the hosts overcome a highly determined Serbia 44-26 in the nation's capital. Greece included eight local-based players in their line up, with many of them partaking in only their second ever 13-a-side game.

The Greek Titans, captained by Salford City Reds' new signing; prop Michael Korkidas, looked set for an easy afternoon when they led 8-0 after just five minutes thanks to tries from Craig Moustakas and Kosta Kouparitsas before the Serbians replied with a try to Russian-based prop-forward Zoran Pesic.

BEN Hornby will be making his Australia debut next Saturday night, ensuring the battle for the Kangaroos No.7 jersey remains wide open. Kiwis visit recalls Coast glory years

Wingham Park used to be a graveyard for visiting teams - now it's more like a graveyard.

The home of the once-mighty West Coast rugby league team would often be packed in the glory days from the mid-1940s to the early-1980s. These days, a few men and their dogs will file in to watch West Coast battle it out in the third division against the likes of Otago, Southland and Gisborne.

But rugby league fever will hit Greymouth with the arrival of the Kiwis to take on a New Zealand Residents XIII on Saturday. West Coast Rugby League chairman Peter Kerridge has even been seen painting the numbers on the seats at Wingham Park to get the great old stand ready for the expected 4000-strong crowd. NZ Herald

Noble stays positive
Coach Brian Noble insisted Great Britain would be better prepared for next week's Gillette Tri-Nations tournament clash with Australia after making a losing start to their campaign.

New Zealand inflicted an 18-14 defeat on Noble's troops at Christchurch's Jade Stadium, and they now face a week of intense preparation for the Sydney match against Australia.

"There was a bit of rustiness in our execution but we've got to step it up next week - and I think we'll be more fluid then," said Noble.

"We didn't have any problems getting out of our own half - but we lacked a bit of patience. "But there are plenty of positives to take out of the game and we've got to stay in control of what we can control."

Kiwis open Tri-Nations account
New Zealand notched their first victory in this year's Tri-Nations tournament with a deserved 18-14 win over Great Britain at Jade Stadium in Christchurch this evening. After going down to Australia in their opening two encounters, the Kiwis finally posted a win over a disappointing Lions side clearly lacking cohesion. Yahoo Sport

Learn from Neil Henry on RLCM DVD "There are different shapes that you can use. Some teams use two block runners on the outside with an inside support. It gives you opportunities to tip the ball back on the inside to drop someone off on the inside, a man on the inside or, to play to one of two options on the outside and then have a sweeper out the back as well." Neil Henry, Assistant Queensland Coach, Assistant NQ Cowboys Coach, 2007 Canberra Raiders Coach.

Decisions Maketh The Defender

With John Dixon

"He can't tackle - he can tackle. He is a poor defender - he is a good defender."

Such comments are heard on the sidelines and in selection panel meetings throughout the year. Though tackling and defending are in many ways synonymous, good coaches know teams and individuals need
coaching to be able to do both
.

RLCM talked to John Dixon, Wales Celtic coach and ex Broncos' Juniors Coordinator and Colts' Coach.

Continued from Wednesday 25th October 2006

However even within a rigid defensive pattern there can and should be allowances for players to make decisions 'outside the box'.

Within a team structure a player should be able to say, "I can read the play and I can make a decision that the place for me to be is right here, right now, as opposed to the team defensive system which may demand that I stay here and hold the line or push up."

Because he can read the play, in the situation that has arisen this good defender says the best thing to do now is break the pattern and make the tackle.

Players will make mistakes with this kind of decision but through analysis and practice they can and will make better decisions and thus become more effective defenders.

RLCM: What drills would you use to have players work on to be a good defender?

DIXON: I don't think there is any magic with drills. It's technique and then the numbers game. It starts with one on one. Then it goes to two on one and two on one in small spaces and two on one in large spaces.

Then it goes two on two and three defenders on two attackers and so on. The drill is built up to try and get the players in different field positions under different scenarios and reacting defensively in those situations.

You also have to work with the size factor. The small player has to match up against the bigger player and the big players against the smaller more agile ones.

For the small player the challenge is to be effective when tackling the bigger players. The big player is not going to go around the small man but he has to be able to cope with the fact that his opponent is large and has to be able to tackle him with some dominance.

He has to be effective on him when he tackles. In some situations he can't just go in low around his legs when the ball carrier hits the line because there will be an offload or the quick play the ball.

But you don't hide that small player away. You work on his technique and his decision-making and you work hard on the troops around him to provide support.

We don't want to lose those smaller players. They are so valuable in our game because they ring alarm bells in defenders' minds, particularly the bigger forwards. That's the wonderful thing about our game.

You want those little blokes. What we have to do is find the strategy that is best for them - a strategy that allows him to contribute both in attack and defence.

It is not just the small player you have to work with. There is a flip side to the coin. You have the big player who is strong, carries the ball well but is poor laterally in the defensive line.

He is as equally a problem as the small player and requires equal amounts of coaching to overcome his shortfalls. They tend not to be found out as often because generally they've got more troops around them.

But at the back end of both the first and second half of the game, players around him have to be alert when he is lined up against the smaller, spontaneous attacker.

His lateral movement may not be good and the smaller player poses a real threat.

So RLCM's advice to all players:

To be a good defender, you not only need good tackling technique but attitude, communication and, above all, good decision-making.
