Learn from Neil Henry on RLCM DVD
"There are different shapes that you can use. Some teams use two block runners on the outside with an inside support. It gives you opportunities to tip the ball back on the inside to drop someone off on the inside, a man on the inside or, to play to one of two options on the outside and then have a sweeper out the back as well." OK, Willie - it's time to put up or shut up

By Graham Lowe

Big Willie Mason should pay attention to the philosophy of another Australian front row hard man when he fronts against the Kiwis in Melbourne tomorrow.

Ian Roberts was one of the toughest I ever coached and a great bloke. He's also the only player I've coached that came out and said he was gay. He had a trademark stare of hostility that made my blood run cold - and even disturbed some of our own players.

RFL optimistic over Wembley final
Rugby Football League bosses are confident that the 2007 Challenge Cup final will be held at the new Wembley.  A deal between builders Multiplex and the FA is expected to see the venue ready to host next May's FA Cup final. That means rugby league's showpiece occasion is now almost certain to take place at Wembley in late August.

Now it's 'Skippy' doing the haka: Geyer
Outspoken former Test forward Mark Geyer has rubbished Nathan Fien's selection in the New Zealand team, saying it cheapens the Kiwi jumper and makes a mockery of the international game. In a vitriolic attack, Geyer said Fien would be far down the pecking order for Australia and encouraged the Kangaroos to turn their backs on him during the haka. He said the guidelines needed to be tightened for international selection.  "He's as country as Slim Dusty," Geyer said. "It's disappointing to have a selection that has finally tipped the scales into the realms of basic stupidity.

Fien told: prove your granny's a Kiwi

Kiwi Bunnies plotting for Souths
SOUTH Sydney's Kiwi Test contingent of David Kidwell, Roy Asotasi, Nigel Vagana and David Fa'alogo have nicknamed themselves the "chocolate Bunnies". "I think it was Kiddy that came up with that one, but there are plenty of names going around for the Bunnies next year - chocolate, caramel, the Black Rabbits . . ," Asotasi said yesterday.

Next time, he'll step on the Gas
If Simon Mannering's chase of Mark Gasnier had followed the turbo-charged path of his league career, he would have caught the star Australian centre the other night. Gasnier remained just out of reach over the 80-metre pursuit, although the young Warrior - making his test debut - forced him to score in the corner. "I was pretty gutted I didn't catch him. I thought I had him but he put on a little step at the end," said Mannering, 20, from the Kiwis' Melbourne hotel this week. Big steps are more Mannering's lot.

Kiwis working on cohesion
New Zealand coach Brian McClennan says his side needs to develop greater cohesion if they are any chance of defeating Australia in Saturday's Tri-Nations Test at Docklands. The Kiwis, who have a shaky hold on the Tri-Nations title they won in 2005, were competitive in last Saturday's 30-18 defeat to the Kangaroos in Auckland, but were let down by inopportune mistakes.

Wolves sign Anderson from Saints
Anderson missed both of Saints' biggest games this year
Warrington have captured New Zealand Test player Vinnie Anderson from St Helens on a three-year deal. Wolves have paid Saints £50,000 for the 27-year-old centre or second row, who had another year left on his contract at Knowsley Road. Anderson will join Great Britain forwards Adrian Morley and Paul Johnson at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Lockyer hoping for big Melbourne crowd
Australian captain Darren Lockyer says he hopes the physical nature of the first Tri-Nations Test in Auckland will help attract Melburnians to this weekend's clash in Melbourne. Already 20,000 tickets have been sold for Saturday night's match between Australia and New Zealand at Docklands, and Lockyer said the skill level on display would also bring in the crowds.

Decisions Maketh The Defender

With John Dixon

"He can't tackle - he can tackle. He is a poor defender - he is a good defender."

Such comments are heard on the sidelines and in selection panel meetings throughout the year. Though tackling and defending are in many ways synonymous, good coaches know teams and individuals need
coaching to be able to do both
.

RLCM talked to John Dixon, Wales Celtic coach and ex Broncos' Juniors Coordinator and Colts' Coach.

DIXON: Being a defender is a broad encompassing thing as opposed to just being a good tackler. The two are interwoven. To be able to defend, you have to be able to tackle.

One on one you have to be able to make the tackle. A big man has to be able to tackle a small man; a small man has to be able to tackle a big man. A slow man has to be able to close down on a nifty little player. These are just some of the combinations that make our game so much of a challenge.

Sometimes though, people can tackle but they are not necessarily good at defending. The two are not mutually exclusive, but one is a sub-set of the other.

To be a good defender, you must be able to tackle.

However, being able to tackle, isn't all that is needed to make you a good defender.

RLCM: So the player has mastered his tackling technique. What factors determine that he can be a good defender?

DIXON: Attitude is a key. The desire to make the tackle no matter what the circumstance. Things like decision-making come into it as well, in terms of the ability to turn up in the defensive zone and then make the right decision. This is linked to anticipation.

This is the ability of the defender to know the ball is going to arrive at that moment and know that it's a tackle he can make, or know the ball is going to arrive a moment too early and say I've got to hold off here and push on to the next player. Communicating with other players around and ahead of you is another factor so the key things are attitude, decision-making, anticipation and communication.

RLCM: How do you instil these skills into the good tackler to make him into a good defender? The player has a lot of decisions to make out there, so can you drill them on being a defender?

DIXON: It's innate in some people. It's like the good ball player. They see things and they've time and I think a good defender has got that innate ability as well. But no one is a closed book. At any level, we can ask that our players make good decisions so we should be able to drill and teach decision-making in a team system and have some success.

We can set up scenarios and ask, "Do you tackle this player or do you tackle that player? What are the cues and signals that say this is the player to take?"

You have to cover the whole gambit and there is a host of things in that. You've got to cover where the attackers physically outweigh your defensive players and where there is a numerical imbalance between attackers and defenders.

You have to teach young players how to defend off a scrum and how to do that effectively in different areas of the field.

There are hundreds of scenarios so you can't cover them all every time but you can and should work on players making good decisions in a variety of situations that are likely to come up in a game.
