LHF Healthplan National League 3 - Final Eliminator Hemel Stags 27 d Warrington Wizards 16 First will play second to start the Halliwell Jones triple-header in next weekend's National Three Grand Final after the Stags triumphed in a terrific clash. Two tries from Chris Heinke in the third quarter swung the game Hemel's way after the sides had been locked at 8-8 at half time, which means that the Stags will celebrate the end of their 25th continuous year of playing the code with the biggest game in their history. Graham Lowe: Bennett laid a trap and it worked
The Broncos wound the clock back and blew the Storm out of the game.
There's been 100 different names for it since Aussie league legend Duncan Thompson came up with his "contract football" in the 1920s.
Thompson would get his forwards hitting the tackle, spinning and then support players coming through were under contract to take the ball off him, keep it alive and open up space out wide.
And if you asked Broncos coach Wayne Bennett after last night's grand final he'd be the first to acknowledge Thompson's contribution to the game plan.
Sure the offloads weren't there but it was that short passing game up the middle that pulled in the Melbourne defence and swung it for the Broncos.
It allowed Brisbane to get a roll on and took Melbourne away from what they've done all season.
That contract football style allowed Darren Lockyer to sit on the edges move the game around the park as he wanted to.
He hardly seemed involved at times but his presence was their to guide the final pass or kick and keep the Broncos rolling on.
And the Broncos defence was outstanding, they were on the rack a few times but didn't flinch.
It was a hugely disappointing game from the Storm.
Tactically they were just blown out of the water.
Man for man Melbourne have shown all season they are the better side.
But they fell into Bennett's trap last night and tried to take the Broncos on at their own game.
It just didn't work for them.
The Storm outsmarted themselves by playing dumb football.
They should have been running out of dummy-half and running the Broncos ragged.
The Broncos will look back at this one and wonder why Melbourne didn't drag them from sideline to sideline.
Player for player Brisbane should never have won, because the Storm had the better players. But Brisbane stuck to contract football.
It's dull to watch and gives the opposition an inflated ego of themselves.
They think, "Geez. we can do the same thing and try to take the Broncos on at their own game".
It won't go down as one of the great grand finals. But those who know the contract football system will sit back and smile. NZ Herald
Bennett still the master Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett is still the master, with six grand final wins, after the Broncos overcame Melbourne 15-8 at Telstra Stadium. Lockyer's heroes embrace their victory THE Broncos hard man Shane Webcke was farewelled in the most glorious fashion, and coach Wayne Bennett picked up his sixth NRL premiership when the Brisbane Broncos beat the Melbourne Storm 15-8 in a controversial and historic grand final last night. Oh God, they've thrilled Kenny BRETT Kenny played in five grand finals in one of rugby league's toughest eras. But it had nothing on watching one from the sidelines as a coach. Second-half brilliance puts Bradford in reach of sixth title LONDON: New Zealand winger Lesley Vainikolo scored a breathtaking 90-metre solo try as Bradford beat Warrington 40-24 to move one match away from a sixth successive grand final appearance. Blair switch project: Storm forward a starter for New Zealand ROOKIE Storm forward Adam Blair is set to continue his rapid rise this season with selection in the New Zealand Tri-Nations squad. They came, they saw, they conquered parochialism SPORTS spectating thrives on finding someone to love, someone to hate. Last night was a case of settling for someone to admire. Lots of them in fact as the game's best and brightest rode in from out of town to stake their claim for the NRL premiership. No-try ruling leaves departing Hill with that empty feeling AN "empty" Scott Hill questioned a disallowed try to Melbourne team-ate Matt King that would have levelled the scores late in last night's grand final - but the biggest blow to the Storm was a Justin Hodges high shot that eventually forced skipper Cameron Smith from the field. Storm left battered as close calls swing in Broncos' favour IN THE end, the Storm were left feeling dazed and somewhat mistreated. With their captain wounded and apparently out-of-sorts after a high tackle from Justin Hodges, Melbourne suffered the further ignominy of a disallowed try to Matt King in the second half, a decision that tilted momentum firmly in Brisbane's favour. Coach hails sweetest win BRISBANE coach Wayne Bennett described last night's 15-8 defeat of Melbourne as "the sweetest" of the six grand finals he has won in his 19-season reign since the Broncos were founded. Medal for the quiet achiever IT'S almost a footballing truism that when Brisbane (or Queensland) win, Darren Lockyer is named man of the match. When his forwards win the struggle of yards and inches, the blond five-eighth always looks the part, directing bullocking runners into gaps and pegging the opposition deep down in the wrong end of the field. Hodges crows again JUSTIN Hodges probably didn't realise the irony of the comment, and he probably didn't care less. But still, here he is, one of the cockiest players in the game, at least previously, accusing the Storm of being "too cocky" in the lead-up to last night's grand final. Webcke top of the props BRISBANE front-rower Shane Webcke said he was privileged to end his career with a premiership ring as his teammates claimed he would be remembered as one of the greatest front-rowers ever. Swinton Lions 27 defeated Celtic Crusaders 26 Swinton Lions reached the National League Two grand final in dramatic style. Chris Hough dropped a goal in sudden-death extra time to give Swinton a 27-26 victory over Welsh club Celtic Crusaders. Sixth triumph is the sweetest: Bennett Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett labelled Sunday night's grand final triumph the sweetest in the Broncos 19-year existence after retiring prop Shane Webcke was given the perfect send off with a spirited 15-8 win over NRL minor premiers Melbourne at Telstra Stadium. "I can say personally, and from a team point of view probably the sweetest one for the Broncos," said Bennett, who became the most successful coach in grand final history with his sixth win, all with the Broncos. No one gave us, the team, a chance. There was a huge amount of adversity and I've got a huge amount of admiration for them." Yahoo Sport

Keeping the dream alive
By Mike Colman
IN his best-selling book Don't Die With the Music In You, Wayne Bennett spoke of telling his players "don't stop three steps short".
None of them did last night as the Broncos pulled off one of the gutsiest of grand final wins, downing minor premiers Melbourne Storm 15-8 at Telstra Stadium in Sydney.
The "three steps" refers to players doing sprints at training. Bennett believes once they overcome the desire to pull up short on a training run, they will learn to go to the wire in a game.
And that is exactly what happened against the favourites from Melbourne.
"It was very gutsy, very courageous," he said after the match. "It was all about perseverance. It wasn't a flash game and we didn't let them play a flash game. We kept at them and kept at them."
Bennett rated the win - the Broncos sixth premiership from six grand final appearances - as the sweetest in the club's history.
There was the fact that all but the most dedicated Broncos fans had written the team off throughout the year. As Bennett said as recently as the finals loss to St George . . . "not too many thought they'd be seeing us again".
There was the fact that last night's win allowed one of the Broncos' greatest servants, Shane Webcke, to retire on the best possible note. "When you have a champion player and a champion person like Shane you do want him to go out like this but there are no guarantees," Bennett said.
There was the fact that it was yet another highlight in the remarkable season of Broncos, Queensland and Australian captain Darren Lockyer, who Bennett described as "much maligned".
When asked what he meant by that term, Bennett said: "Go back and read your stories. Sometimes I wonder if you blokes read what you write. You said he shouldn't be five-eighth, that he shouldn't be Queensland captain. The list goes on. It's only on nights like this that you all want to applaud him. Thank God he doesn't lose confidence because the best thing we had going for us tonight was that he was on the field for us."
There was the fact that the Broncos brought home another premiership for fans, many of who travelled to Sydney to cheer on their team.
"That was the best crowd we've ever had in Sydney," Bennett said. "The feeling when we walked around at the end was unbelievable. The ones who have supported us all year, the ones who came down here and stayed right until the end. We're as happy for them as we are for ourselves."
But best of all was the way the Broncos refused to give in, even when they were all but dead on their feet and Melbourne's backs looked like cutting loose.
"It wasn't until a minute to go that I believed we'd win the premiership," Bennett said. "It was a hell of a contest. It wasn't pretty but it was all about guys digging deep.
"They just had such belief. They kept the dream alive."

Grand Final Heartbreak for Newtown Jets The Newtown Jets have retained their unenviable record of not having won a major NSW Rugby League finals match since 1943, having lost 20-19 to Parramatta in extra time in the 2006 VB Premier League Grand Final at Telstra Stadium on Sunday. The Jets led 18-16 at half-time and neither side scored a try in the tense second half. Newtown missed three field goal attempts in Golden Point extra time but the Eels grabbed the premiership with a sweetly-taken field goal eight minutes into extra time, after the teams had been tied up at 19-all after eighty minutes of play. Brisbane 15 Melbourne 8 BRISBANE coach Wayne Bennett is still the master. It is now six wins from six grand finals for Brisbane, all with him as coach. The apprentice, Melbourne coach and former Broncos assistant Craig Bellamy, remains so. Retiring Broncos prop Shane Webcke got the fairytale farewell and Brisbane captain Darren Lockyer dominated, in typical style.
Broncos down Storm for sixth premiership The Brisbane Broncos maintained their perfect grand final record to defeat Melbourne 15-8 in tonight's NRL decider at Sydney's Olympic stadium and claim the club's sixth premiership. After leading 8-4 at half-time, the Broncos went on with the job in the second stanza, scoring a try through Brent Tate before skipper Darren Lockyer put the result beyond doubt seven minutes from time with a field goal to extend the margin to seven points. Melbourne levelled the scores nine minutes into the second half with a four-pointer to Matt King, but could not score again as the Broncos sent out retiring club legend Shane Webcke a winner.
It is the club's sixth title, following grand final wins in 1992, 1993, 1997, 1998 and 2000. ABC Sport

Storm '99 win changed Bennett's thinking
Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett has revealed Melbourne's historic 1999 NRL grand final win changed his approach to coaching.
The Storm claimed its maiden premiership in its second year of existence in 1999, and did it without a recognised five-eighth.
Pivot Scott Hill injured his shoulder midway through the season leaving Matt Geyer, who has spent the bulk of his 214 first grade games on the wing, to take over at No.6 and partner playmaker Brett Kimmorley in the halves.
Bennett, who has won five premierships with the Broncos and has not lost a grand final in his 19 years with the club, admitted he had previously thought teams needed both a champion No.6 and No.7 to win a title.
But he said Melbourne's dramatic 20-18 win over St George Illawarra seven years ago changed that thinking.
"When Melbourne won in 1999 without a five-eighth in a grand final ... that just completely blew my mind," Bennett told the Austereo network ahead of Sunday's grand final against the Storm at Telstra Stadium.
"As a coach I always believed you had to have a top halfback and top five-eighth to win a title, after that I just made a decision you just get the best 17 players on the field and just see how they go from there.
"Positions aren't important as they used to be."
After having former Test stars Allan Langer and Kevin Walters in the halves for the Broncos' five previous grand finals, Bennett will throw unheralded 28-year-old No.7 Shane Perry, who started the season playing for Redcliffe in the Queensland Cup, into the biggest game of his career alongside Kangaroos pivot Darren Lockyer.
Hill will meanwhile front up for the Storm at six, playing alongside boom halfback Cooper Cronk with Geyer out on the wing.
Bennett, who also coached Canberra to the 1987 grand final before joining the Broncos, said making this year's premiership decider was perhaps more satisfying than those of previous years.
"This one probably does (mean) a little bit (more)," said Bennett, who made drastic changes to his coaching support staff at the end of last year, sacking Gary Belcher, Glenn Lazarus and Walters after another semi-finals fade-out.
"I've been under a fair bit of criticism over the past 12 to 18 months. The team has as well.
"Everything we kind of do has been criticised, so it's just nice to do what I spent 20-odd years doing, proving them wrong.
"I had a guy write to me earlier in the year, and I've still got the email at home, he just said `do what you've always done Wayne, prove them wrong'. And I've kind of kept it.
"It's meant a lot to me, this season." SMH Online

An extract from RLCM Book 21
The Need for Innovators & Creativity in Rugby League
Written by Robert Rachow
With Dennis Ward & Don Oxenham
Sports coaching and freedom of thought can often appear as two mutually exclusive entities. After all, isn't coaching all about a sequential chain of popular teachings? A mentor passes on instructions to a variety of coaches, who then impart that same information on senior athletes, who in turn pass it onto the less experienced athletes.
Continued from last week..
Another view is that creativity, besides its on-field benefits, also holds tangible goodwill in terms of luring juniors and supporters to the grassroots levels. Essentially each and every coach is a salesperson for the game.
Thinking coaches will inevitably attract more interest than following coaches, because their dynamism and ingenuity is vastly appealing.
Players like to have a sense of individualism and it creates a sense of synergy if they see their coach employing the same attitude.
There is an old axiom that says the goal of a coach is to make themself obsolete.
What this means is that if a coach imparts his philosophies with sufficient mastery, the players will mould together in a manner that removes the need for external supervision.
It is a somewhat Utopian concept, yet it presents an interesting model - the prevalence of widely innovative children who have been attracted to and succeeded peerlessly in Rugby League, because of the guidance of coaches stressing freedom of thought.
WHAT PREVENTS PEOPLE FROM BEING CREATIVE?
Naturally if innovation were so easy, it would not be such a special quality. As was stated before, society has bred generations of people with their lives mapped out from an early age.
Changing direction on this path can commonly cause heartbreak and both physical and mental pain before any rewards are met.
Not only is it the innovator who is effected either. There will be people close to the innovator whose lifestyles and concepts will resist change and favour familiarity.
Then there will be people at the other end of the spectrum that stand to lose some form of standing as a result of innovation and will oppose it forcibly.
So more often than not, potential innovators will choose to stick with convention out of respect to those close to them and fear of those that oppose them.
Common theory estimates that 99 per cent of ideas in everyday life are rejected. It is an alarmingly high statistic, but when you look at those who hold power in society, this figure is explanatory. Those at the top of the ladder have arrived there through strategies or concepts that are almost half a century old.
While adaptability is a key to them remaining successful, most of their basic ideals will be ingrained from their formative years. If we were to parallel this to Rugby League, club administration would be the most obvious example.
To be continued....
