Maltese Rugby League Association

The Maltese Rugby League Association is a non-profit organisation that works on promoting and developing rugby league within the Maltese community.

The MRLA's major fundraiser- the Miss Malta Knight Pageant, is upon us and to be staged on Saturday August 5th at the Blacktown Reception Lounge.

This year's Miss Malta Knight triumphant will win herself a trip to the beautiful Maltese Islands, courtesy of major sponsor Breakaway Travel.

Last year's event welcomed several celebrities from rugby league legend Mark Geyer to ironwoman Candice Falzon and Australian Wallaby Matt Henjak. Current Australian Title holder boxers Shannon Taylor and Adam Vella also joined the current Maltese International rugby league team for a prestigious event.

And back by popular request, as master of ceremonies, is Pauly Fenech, star of SBS TV's Fat Pizza.

A memoribilia auction run by celebrity auctioneer Doug Keen will also line up a host of hot items including a rare Maltese international rugby league jersey autographed by 'The Three Fenech's- Mario, Pauly and Jeff'

For more information, please call Anthony Micallef on 0412 881310 or email
pageant@...

For tickets, please call Veronica Vella on 0438 179300. The MRLA is offering a special early bird offer to persons purchasing tickets before Friday 21st July.

The offer will save you $15pp, off the $110pp donation. Tables of 10 are also available for only $900.

Admission also includes entertainment from Steven Anthony and a 3-course dinner, as well as all the beer wine and soft drinks you can help yourself to.

A wonderful night guaranteed, and all for a great cause.

Graham Lowe: Return of the old warriors
As an ordinary bloke with a great passion for league, I'm looking forward to this weekend's football more than any other this year. Sure, we're about to see a Warriors side who have begun to realise just how good they are and can be, with consistent effort, discipline and willingness to listen to a coach who is proving himself one of the NRL's best.
Ones to watch in Auckland club league
Despite two draws this season, Mt Albert remain in the lead of the Lion Red Fox Memorial. Tomorrow they take on second-placed Papakura at Prince Edward Park. After a slow start to the competition the Sea Eagles are showing the form that won them their section of the grading round. But I reckon Mt Albert will beat them in what looks like being a great battle up front.Read more NZ Herald

Doncaster sack coach Tony Miller
Doncaster have put former Leeds and Salford stand-off Graham Holroyd in temporary charge following the sacking of head coach Tony Miller. The ambitious LHF National League One club today parted company with Miller, who stepped up from the post of assistant coach following the sudden death of St John Ellis on New Year's Eve. Holroyd, 30, who is the Lakers' leading scorer this year, has been made player-coach but the club will advertise for a full-time successor to Miller. Sporting Life

John Lang

Written by Robert Rachow from RLCM Coachtalk Edition 1 printed 2000

Of all the challenges a Rugby League coach must face on a season-to-season basis, melding individual players into a single cohesive unit is perhaps the most difficult task.

The majority of great clubs throughout history have prospered on a sense of teamwork, rather than personal brilliance, but they have had to work hard to establish such unity.

Outlooks have needed adjustment, gameplans have been altered and attitudes refocused in order to maximize the team's chances of success.

John Lang has become accustomed to tailoring gameplans and team goals to suit differing circumstances and personnel.

As the former State of Origin star alludes to, forming a winning team is reliant on combining both the strengths and weaknesses of the players concerned, with a suitable style of play.

"It really is a marriage of your philosophies as a coach and the qualities of the players at your disposal," Lang offers.

"Your style of play has to take into account the individual abilities
you are working with.

"I try to come up with the best style of play to suit my players and then, in terms of a gameplan, I will look at the strengths weaknesses of the opposition and adjust our game accordingly. You have to accentuate the overall strengths of your own team while pressuring the opposition in areas where they are deficient.

"Your game cannot be reinvented every week, but you can place more emphasis on certain facets against certain teams. I try to instill in my players an awareness of what the opposition do, so they can preempt or respond suitably when situations arise.

"For example, we have adopted a system in defence that we can adjust depending on the actions of the opposition once we have determined their type of game.

"As far as patterns of play are concerned, they must be matched to the standard of your players.

"Generally, the more experienced and the better quality the player, the less restrictive the coach has to be.

"The balance you try to achieve as a coach is to have a basic organisational structure which enables you to operate efficiently as a team, but does not kerb individual flair.

The coach who can attain that is well on their way to success."
