New self-belief, team spirit add up to make a perfect Storm VETERAN Melbourne Storm winger Matt Geyer says his team has found the crucial element for premiership success it has been missing for years - self-belief. We won't be broken: Roosters ROOSTERS coach Ricky Stuart last night said the glamour club would not be broken by outside influences after he watched his side slump to their sixth straight loss. Stuart had nothing but praise for his players despite Manly all but ending their finals hopes with a six-try thumping. Read more Sunday Telegraph
RLCM Comment If the Roosters continue with their style of playing to the outside, the once proud club will always be easy fodder for clubs who play to the inside. The Roosters coaching staff should be questioned as to why the majority of their attacking plays are still to the outside.
Why Firman wants to quit Cowboys Cowbays playmaker Brett Firman is desperately homesick and wants out of his $130,000-a-year contract. The 24-year-old halfback said the frustration of playing only seven NRL games this season had taken a toll. Read more Sunday Mail
Learn from Neil Henry on RLCM DVD "There are different shapes that you can use. Some teams use two block runners on the outside with an inside support. It gives you opportunities to tip the ball back on the inside to drop someone off on the inside, a man on the inside or, to play to one of two options on the outside and then have a sweeper out the back as well." Halftime Talk
With Kurt Wrigley - St George Dragons assistant coach
. Be specific with the words you use. The speech is obviously the focal point of the half time break so try to avoid words and phrases, which are emotional and very ambiguous.
Some examples encounted over the years include:
"Come on guys, lets dig deep!" "Come on, Have a go!" "What's going on out there?" "Start playing smart" "Let's get into the game" "Our tackling is terrible" "Let's get out there and play well"
Coaches will have heard these and similar phrases before. These statements might sound encouraging, but give the team no real useful feedback.
Messages that are more useful are words/phrases that Call to Action.
Some examples are included at the end of the article.
Half-time instructions that highlight a negative result can be delivered in a more positive way.
