Gasnier 'tops' in thin Blue backline

NSW selector Laurie Daley yesterday leapt to the defence of the Blues' great gamble in pitching Mark Gasnier into the five-eighth hot seat for the Origin series decider, claiming the Test centre had a long future in the sky blue No.6 jumper.

Gasnier was largely ineffective at five-eighth as the Blues succumbed to a spirited Queensland revival at Telstra Dome on Wednesday night, his combination with halfback Craig Gower unable to capitalise on the platform laid by the Blues forwards.

Their inability to make much of an impact on the game was highlighted by the way Maroons opposites Darren Lockyer and Johnathan Thurston took charge in the second half to steer their side to victory.

But Daley, a former Test skipper and five-eighth who also doubles as the Blues assistant coach, said he saw enough to suggest Gasnier could be a long term solution for the Blues at five-eighth.

"I thought it worked well, I thought Gaz as the game went on he got better," said Daley.

"Leading into the game we always thought positionally at stages he mightn't be in the correct spots but for his own development there was a lot to like about (Wednesday night), I can see him becoming a real talent in that position.

"From what I saw as a five-eighth, I think he's got class written all over him and he'll make a real good fist of it."

Daley's boast may be based more on potential and hope rather than form, with the NSW five-eighth cupboard as bare as former Test halfback Peter Sterling's scalp.

Sydney Roosters pivot Braith Anasta has been tried and seemingly discarded, while Kurt Gidley has yet to step out from the imposing shadow of scrum-base partner Andrew Johns at Newcastle.

The return of Jamie Lyon to the NRL could give selectors another option but he, like Gasnier, appears best suited to the centres.

The same could be said of the halfback spot, Cronulla skipper Brett Kimmorley the only obvious candidate, but even he has been seen to crack under the glare of Origin football.

The likes of Manly's Matt Orford and St George Illawarra No.7 Mathew Head may also come into the reckoning, but when you compare it to the riches that the Queensland selectors are suddenly blessed with it appears slim pickings for the Blues in future years.

If he's worried, Daley isn't showing it.

"It's funny how things turn. Queensland after game one everyone was saying they've got no hope, they were written off," said Daley.

"Now they're talking about dynasties and young sides and now with NSW we have people saying that we might be looking a bit thin in the halves.

"I've got no dramas."

Another position which could come under scrutiny is that of coach Graham Murray, who would not comment on whether he would seek another crack at the Maroons.

"That won't be my decision, that'll be the (NSWRL) board's decision," said Murray.

THE ROLE of the COACH

With Wayne Pearce

Continued from Thursday

In order to discipline his players, a coach should not falter in his persona. That is to say, a coach is a role model for his players and his performance and attitude on the football field should be mirrored in his everyday life.

A coach's conduct and ethical behaviour has an enormous impact on his players and the team's progress: "The players see you as someone who has mastered the art of being successful, so what they want to do is to learn all the lessons they possibly can about being successful - you must practice what you preach."

It would be hypocritical to tell the team to develop hard work ethic, if you did not possess one yourself.

A coach should enforce ethical behaviour amongst his players, for example, a coach should not follow a win at all costs strategy, and explain to his team why this is so.

In a nutshell, it's about setting them in good stead for life. And a coach who can do this, together with improving his player's game, will leave a strong legacy.

The keys to effective leadership are:
. Be the example and not just set the example;
. Be seen to be caring;
. Seek to develop the whole person;
. Acknowledge his player's work and worth;
. Seek to delegate;
. Be positive and exude energy;
. Expect adversity;
. Set and maintain standards of excellence;
. Value character as well as ability;
. Do what is right, not what is popular;
. Dare to be different; and
. Look to better himself (leaders are learners).

A coach who follows just one of these suggestions is on track to improving his leadership skills. The coaching process is indeed about determining why you are in such a position and how you will handle your duties.

It's about learning to delegate particular responsibilities, to expose players to specialist knowledge, and ensuring they bond as a team.

Pearce says teams that boast high levels of morale are a reflection of a strong coach who is not afraid to discipline his players. This should be the goal of all coaches.

They should strive to teach their players the fundamentals of football, as well good off-field behaviour. With players using you as a model, it is imperative the approach you have at training and at
the game is a true reflection of your everyday life.
