Gasnier gamble a pivotal failure By Glenn Jackson
NSW rolled the dice. Up came a six. But on the night, it just wasn't good enough. The record books will show Mark Gasnier's switch from the centres to five-eighth ended with a loss, and the jury will certainly be out about whether the St George Illawarra star has the game to match the fame in his new bid to become a great No.6.
No longer a centre, and really no longer a centre of attention, could just about sum up Gasnier's posting at pivot last night at Telstra Dome in the State of Origin decider.
The Blues' attack, for large stages, had the potency of a cap gun. And let's face it, that had a fair bit to do with the combination which had a bit of Sonny and Cher in it - lots of public displays of affection but never quite on the same page.
Gasnier and his halfback partner Craig Gower roomed together in the lead-up to the decider and the Blues always played a straight bat when it came to the partnership; they're coming along nicely, they always said.
But history will show that neither Gasnier, the Dragons' centre, nor Gower, the Penrith half, imposed themselves on a contest which had the tight finish, but wasn't quite the advertisement for rugby league the game's officialdom were hoping for.
Blues coach Graham Murray was putting on a brave face about the performance of his halves afterwards, saying: "I thought our attack was fine. I thought Gaz did some good things with the football. I thought he handled it well."
Gasnier's first half had a bit of everything - but bit was the operative word; the occasional long ball, the odd short ball, a deft offload to Danny Buderus, and yes, one kick.
The 24-year-old struggled to get involved in the opening moments as the Blues did most of their attacking from their own end.
But it quickly became apparent that Maroons coach Mal Meninga's match-eve assertion that Gasnier would not play five-eighth at all was misguided. The Dragons star took the ball at first and second receiver - fullback Brett Hodgson chimed in every now and then, as predicted, but without the regularity many may have thought.
But for all the talk about how this new halves pairing of Gower and Gasnier would combine, they very rarely did. The one time they came together in the first half, Gower's inside ball to Gasnier was ruled forward.
It just about summed up their night - the timing wasn't quite there. Neither was the fluency. The Blues lacked a spark in attack, shown by the fact their only try of the first half came from an intercept pass.
In the second half, Gasnier was given more of a licence to roam, and it paid almost immediate dividends. While he was stationed on the Blues' left in attack throughout the first half, he positioned himself on both sides in the second.
It was on the right edge that Gasnier gifted centre Matt King with the Blues' second try of the night when he fed the Melbourne player nicely in the 46th minute.
Ironically, Gasnier was then switched to right centre late in the game when Timana Tahu came from the field, with Ben Hornby moving to five-eighth.
Gasnier looked wasted at times, the footwork that dazzles opposing centres in NRL games most weekends only occasionally raising a spark in the tight spaces he was forced to work in.
One day, he may make a great five-eighth, but it did seem too much, too soon, on one of rugby league's greatest stages. The biggest pressure-cooker of them all.
Gasnier ended the game at right centre - many will now say that's where he should have started it. SMH

Video nasties in the blooper-Dome, but West defends decisions VIDEO referee Graeme West last night defended a series of second-half decisions that would have seen the Origin decider end in a blaze of controversy if not for Queensland captain Darren Lockyer's "fairytale" try in the dying minutes. Too good by halves as Maroons raise the roof and finally crack the vault JUBILATION and relief surged onto the field at Telstra Dome last night, writes Roy Masters. Manly snare Lyon as St Helens eye Gidley JAMIE Lyon's decision to link with Manly yesterday has opened the door for his current club, St Helens, to secure another former Test centre - Matt Gidley. Smith puts his focus back on the field after troubled past PARRAMATTA halfback Tim Smith says he's not worried by the negative attention caused by his boozy indiscretions and he's now solely concentrating on his football. Lucky 13 means Hill can stay, Broncos next mission MELBOURNE five-eighth Scott Hill is set to decide his future within days - and the former international hasn't ruled out staying at the Storm. Guess that's why they call them the Blues QUEENSLAND won the game, won over the crowd and quite possibly kept the State of Origin concept alive last night with a dramatic come-from-behind victory in the series decider. That Hodgson pass: gods were just not on my side SHATTERED Blues fullback Brett Hodgson said last night he would emerge a better player from his Origin disappointment. Lockyer on the spot to seal a remarkable victory QUEENSLAND skipper Darren Lockyer played the starring role in his very own State of Origin fairytale last night, scoring the winning try against NSW. Lockyer finds the magic TEN minutes to go in State of Origin III last night and Queensland were gone - crushed by the disappointment of a series of controversial decisions that went against them and trailing by 10 points against NSW. Maroons charge home to end drought Two tries in the final nine minutes have handed Queensland a dramatic Origin win. WIGAN TO WIN SURVIVAL SCRAP The Wildcats scored over 30 points last week against St Helens and still didn't win. Their defence obviously wasn't up to scratch. The big problem for them here is they face a side on a winning run, full of confidence and with every player to select from. Wigan haven't been beating top quality teams of late but they have been winning and that is the main thing. They will also have around 15,000 fans roaring them on which is another major plus. Storm handling Inglis with care MELBOURNE has emphatically ruled out any chance of teenager Greg Inglis making a shock return against Brisbane tomorrow night, insisting his comeback may be delayed for up to a fortnight as he tries to overcome a back injury. There were whispers Inglis would be a surprise inclusion in the Storm side for its match against the Broncos at Olympic Park, but those rumours were quickly put to bed by Melbourne medical staff yesterday. THE ROLE of the COACH
With Wayne Pearce
Continued from Wednesday
Behavioural boundaries must be set and the coach must stand firm by his decisions - but not become dictatorial.
A coach who can liase with his players in a friendly, yet firm manner that will reap the most respect, "Really, you have to be informative, consultative and set guidelines, but at the same time, players must be able to have a say."
This encompasses the concept of team dynamics.
Balmain installed a penalty system where players who infringe are sent to a disciplinary panel, comprised of select club members.
With the players handing down discipline, not only is the equity aspect bolstered, but the team also knows where it stands.
An important point a coach should note is being up front. It is easy for a coach to blame the selectors for a particular decision, but frankness will pay off in the long run. Following this is the need for hardline and tolerant tactics.
A coach should be seen to be setting guidelines for behaviour and ensure the players follow these.
They must remember, though, that to gain full respect from players, a touch of tolerance and humility is essential.
There are two other disciplinary areas - namely (a) general and specific and (b) developing a culture.
The first is a contrast between the two means of handling a situation that requires the use of discipline.
A coach can choose to be general when challenging the actions of players and perhaps address the team about the issue, or instead specifically approach each player.
The second refers to building up the identity of a club so it can be identified from another, "It is about developing a philosophy, having a model you want to try to achieve and being consistent in your application of the issues that will get you towards that culture."
Such things as encouraging player feedback and having an open-door policy will help a coach to build a culture.
