Stuart sticks by his "passengers"
The Sydney Roosters' "passengers" have another chance after coach Ricky Stuart made minimal changes to his side to meet Manly on Saturday.
Former South Sydney captain Ashley Harrison was dropped to the bench for Shane Shackleton but the only player omitted from the 17 was interchange back Vince Mellars.
Dumped NSW State of Origin stars Craig Wing and Brett Finch were retained at centre and hooker respectively.
Wing said the side had been "upbeat" despite a horror run that included a 42-10 flogging by Canberra, an on-field spat between captain Craig Fitzgibbon and Finch being made public and Stuart labelling some in his side "passengers".
"There's only so much soul-searching you can do," Wing told AAP.
"I don't think there's too much more talking we can do as a team and amongst ourselves, we've just got to try and play well as individuals and as a team.
"After what he (Stuart) said to us after the game, he was pretty harsh but I think it was very deserved and it was spot on, it shook us up a little bit but I guess we needed it."
Fitzgibbon said Stuart's verbal barrage was taken out of context.
"I wouldn't say passengers, I just think maybe on the day when he said passengers we had a lot of poor performers," he said.
"I think that was probably taken out of context a bit.
"We're confident we've got the players in place and we're confident we can turn the corner.
"We're running out of time for this season, I think we've got to win seven from nine so the pressure's on in that respect but, in saying that, no-one expects us to do it so the pressure's off as well." Read more Yahoo Sport

Defence to decide Queensland captain Darren Lockyer believes that Wednesday night's State of Origin showdown will be decided by defence.
If Lockyer's prediction is correct, the Maroons will fancy their chances, not conceding a try to the Blues for two hours of football before they crossed for a late consolation four-pointer in game two.
Lockyer also said the team had be inspired by previous heroic Maroons performances, including the 1995 'easybeats' team that shut out NSW 2-0 in game two, the lowest-scoring Origin match in history.
Led by Paul 'Fatty' Vautin, that side then went on to wrap up the series 20-12 in game three in Melbourne, perhaps an ominous sign of what may transpire at Telstra Dome tonight.
"Defence wins these games and that will be our mind-set tomorrow night," Lockyer told AAP.
"We need to take it back to the '95 series. Their defence was outstanding and that's the sort of effort we'll need.
"It's going to be tough out there at times and if their forwards get on top of us in patches we need to hang in and stick together like past Queensland sides have done."
Vautin, a 22-game origin legend, said nothing quite compares to State of Origin.
"It rips your soul open and asked you question after question from the first minute to the 80th minute," he said.
"It's the greatest football any player can play and the greatest test of character."
Queensland is looking to win their first series since 2001, and Lockyer knows it may well come down to one minor refereeing decision that decides it.
Lockyer himself knows the pain of a harsh refereeing decision when he was called for stripping the ball at a crucial stage of game two of the 1990 series. The Maroons went on to loss that game 12-6.
"Turning points in games, anything can happen, including refereeing decisions," Langer said.
"I remember one here where Greg McCallum got me for stripping the ball off big Glenn Lazarus. Little things like that can cost you big time in these game.
"We saw it with the Socceroos in the World Cup, those things can cost you a win for sure." Read more Sportal

Maroons' most desperate hour PAUL VAUTIN has led a chorus of former Queensland greats to declare tonight's State of Origin decider against NSW as the most important game in the Maroons' history. Taylor points to win over record ANDREW JOHNS can have the first-grade point-scoring record as long he leaves the Eels with two competition points, acccording to the man set to be left in his wake. Gaz's Origin role takes centre stage MARK GASNIER has trained almost exclusively at five-eighth in NSW's final session under the roof at Telstra Dome, flying in the face of claims from Queensland coach Mal Meninga that the rookie State of Origin pivot will be moved for tonight's decider. Maroons bank on momentum I REALLY think that no matter who wins the 2006 Origin series tonight, we are not going to have the blow-out scoreline that has become synonymous with the last game of the series. Super League could head for Wales Super League teams could play a round of matches at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium next season. A secret plan, which has been discussed by clubs, would see all six fixtures on one weekend staged in the city, three on the Saturday and three on Sunday. If the proposal is agreed, Super League 2007 will be reduced by one round. Read more BBC Sport
John Howard to present trophy Prime Minister John Howard will mark the final moments of an historic Harvey Norman State of Origin Series when he presents the Harvey Norman Shield at Melbourne's Telstra Dome this evening.
The game will be the first time Origin has gone 'indoors' with the closed Telstra Dome roof likely to provide one of the noisiest Origin nights in memory.
It will be the first time that a decider has been played outside of NSW and Queensland, and the first time that the Harvey Norman Shield has been presented outside of those states.
"The rivalry between New South Wales and Queensland in State of Origin has carved a place in the annals of Australian sport," Prime Minister Howard said today.
"In many ways, State of Origin represents the pinnacle of the sport of rugby league.
"The intensity and passion generated by the players and supporters, coupled with the endless capacity for surprise, generally ensures Origin games are decided in the final minutes.
"Playing this season's third game on neutral ground in Melbourne adds to the sense of excitement generated by an Origin decider. I can't wait."
To mark the occasion the Origin Shield will make a spectacular entrance to the arena moments before the teams take the field.
As well as the final installment of one of the most gripping contests in Origin's 26 years, fans at the Telstra Dome will be entertained by one of Australia's hottest new groups "End of Fashion". Victoria's Kane Alexander will sing the National Anthem.
"Rugby League has a history of promoting young Australian talent with acts such as the Veronicas and the Rogue Traders making some of their early public appearances at our events," Director of Marketing Mr Paul Kind said today.
While all original seating allocations have been sold out since the day after Queensland leveled the series in spectacular fashion there is still a chance to be at the match.
The ARL released additional standing room tickets soon after the sell out and many of these will remain available throughout today and at the gate this evening.
Interest in the match is such that the Nine Network will show the game live in Melbourne and Adelaide with the Melbourne coverage commencing at 7.30pm along with the coverage in NSW and Queensland. NRL Online

Gaz won't play pivot, insists Meninga Mal Meninga believes Mark Gasnier will not play in the pivot role "at any stage" tonight. Preaching to the unconvertible LET'S get a few things straight. Victorians hate NSW. And so tonight's State of Origin decider will be played in front of a largely uninitiated crowd, who largely couldn't give a toss about the fierce interstate rivalry of two northern states and who will largely support Queensland. Fat chance Origin will die but Maroons have to win: Vautin NEVER one to take a backward step on the field, Paul Vautin has blazed a similar trail off it. Tonight's game, he says, is Queensland's most important game ever. "This is the biggest game in our history," Vautin said yesterday. Gower a role model, leader and 'toughest ever' CRAIG Gower, who will lead NSW around the field in tonight's Origin decider, is a "leader of men". Blues' retro logic ideal challenge "TAKING the right option in big games is what separates robots from footballers," says NSW's Mark Gasnier, a player central to one of the biggest gambles in the 27-year history of Origin series. THE ROLE of the COACH
With Wayne Pearce
Continued from Tuesday
3) Sense of worth, value and achievement - "This is linked to the player's achievements and feedback from people he respects.
"It's important for coaches to realise that the smallest thing can make the world of difference to a player, but at the same time, a coach should not give out praise when it is not due.
"That's worthless encouragement which players can sense."
4) Can't fake enthusiasm - "It's either there or its not. Genuine enthusiasm exudes out of the pours of skin."
5) Variety is the spice - "At the elite level of football now, there is so much work that players have to get through.
"It's important that coaches give variety in their sessions. This is a real challenge, but the players will gain enjoyment from it."
With the right balance of the above aspects, the role of the coach is simplified.
Obviously, a highly energetic and supportive team will be easier to coach than one that is constantly drowning their sorrows.
Coaches should realise that morale-development does not happen overnight - it requires a concerted effort.
Team-based activities both on and off the field will indeed help foster team spirit and coaches should encourage this.
The tough question, then, as a coach is, 'If I am going to create a team environment that is fun, full of enthusiasm and one that supports open communication, how do I maintain it and ensure the players do not abuse it?'
Discipline is the answer, that enables both the establishment, and continuation of, a morale-filled team of players.
