Choosing a MENTOR
By Peter Corcoran OAM - ARL Development Education Director Written by Robert Rachow
Mark Graham had one, Brian Smith was one and David Waite still idolises his. What are we talking about? The answer is of course, a coaching mentor.
Continued from Thursday
Just as important as it is for players to have access to a knowledgeable coach, it is absolutely vital that a coach maintain contact with a responsible and respectable role model.
This person comes in the form of a mentor.
"I would suggest it is somebody with the ability to lift your goals, evaluate you and provide positives brainstorms.
"They should help you achieve and be prepared to replicate what they teach, rather than just talking about it.
"Most coaches know from when they were players that people who say they are going to do one thing and end up doing another are not worth worrying about.
"Even if you forgive them on the outside, subconciously you will note the inconsistencies and gradually that will lead to a lack of credibility on their behalf.
"Once you doubt their credibility, you don't accept their ideas so easily and you begin to question any prior information they exposed to you."
To avoid a dilemma such as this, it is imperative therefore that a coach settles on a mentor who is suitable both in terms of football knowledge and character traits.
Every coach has an area of expertise or a particular forte, but by mismatching this with conflicting views from a mentor, the benefits will be negated.
This applies to personality, where an extravert mentor may cloud the communication skills of a quietthinking coach and a quiet-thinking mentor may stifle the motivational brilliance of an extraverted coach.
Even when the traits of the mentor and coach are in symbiosis, it is valuable that the mentor does not stunt the development of the coach by providing all the answers to their problems.
As growth is only possible through learning, the apprentice needs to make errors on their own and debate ideas in the, "People are compelled to do things if they feel they have some form of ownership of it," he explains.

The Perfect Ambassador - Barrie McDermott
Barrie McDermott's star studded and newly created Ambassadors will make their historic first ever public appearance when they grace the York International 9's on Saturday July 15.
Former Great Britain, Ireland and Leeds Rhinos hero McDermott said," The whole concept of the York Festival appeals to me greatly. It is the perfect stage to showcase Rugby League's many attributes and to encourage the development of the sport throughout Europe."
This year the Festival will celebrate its fifth Anniversary and Liz Topi, the Events Officer, for City of York Council is thrilled to note, "that the standards of skill and entertainment are set to rise dramatically this year. The high quality of entrants in the Fairfax Cup is without precedent. The City of York Council is very pleased to be involved in the continual increase in stature of the York Festival."
In conjunction with the major rugby clothing and equipment company KooGa the splendid name, colours and logo have been designed. Barrie adds, "the Ambassadors name has been chosen to convey the idea of delivering the message of Rugby League throughout the sporting world.
"The logo of the handshake of friendship is to emphasise how this great game can cross international borders and bring people together from all backgrounds, nationalities and walks of life in the spirit of friendship and mutual respect."
In typical McDermott fashion he concludes by stating, "The Ambassadors will have some real household names in its ranks. We mean to lift the Fairfax Cup at the first attempt. I know the other sides are very strong but they will have to be to overcome my boys!"
Neal Coupland, Festival Chairman, is quite rightly cock a hoop with the unique entry of the Ambassadors, "When we first put the idea to Barrie the instant response was positive and professional and the perfect catalyst to raise the York event to new heights."
The Ambassadors will be managed by Chris Gibson - a former Leeds and York player and Chairman of Barrie's Testimonial Year 2005, "The interest from sponsors and players has been excellent and is testament to the universal and unique appeal that Barrie McDermott's name has in the sporting world."
The York International Festival will take place on July 15 and 16 at the home of Heworth rugby club.
On Saturday the Fairfax Cup will unfold and on the Sunday a brand new event will take centre stage wheh teams from development areas will compete for the Archbishop Dolben Cup.
John Singleton's stadium the perfect union
MILLIONAIRE businessman John Singleton has declared he wants to get involved in the new eight-team national rugby union competition - with an intention to turn the Central Coast into a rugby union powerbase.
While debate rages in clubland about the new competition, with Randwick fearing they could end up as a sub-district outfit, the entrepreneur ad man says the Central Coast has the potential to become a rugby heartland - and that the big loser in the end will be rugby league.
"We have the ground, the money, great support and no rugby league. We are like a pub with no beer. Someone is going to grasp that one day," Singleton said.
Singleton said it would be a big plus for rugby, and whenever a big match is played at the Central Coast Stadium the corporate areas sell out faster than they do for rugby league games.
"We would want the best CEO, the best coach and a proper selection criteria," he said.
ARU CEO Gary Flowers said while there was a strong commitment for the teams to be rugby owned, the involvement of people like John Singleton in the sides would certainly be encouraged.
"That is something we think is one of the positive outcomes of this summit," Flowers said. Read more Daily Telegraph
