Powergen Challenge Cup
Bids by National League clubs Widnes and Whitehaven to pull off giant-killing acts in the Powergen Challenge Cup on Sunday have been hit by red tape. Both the Vikings, who entertain Catalans Dragons in a televised fifth-round tie, and Whitehaven, who go to Warrington, are without cup-tied players.
Widnes must plug the gaps created by the loss of full-back Miles Greenwood, half-back Ian Watson and winger John Kirkpatrick, who were all signed after the cup register closed.
Greenwood joined the club on loan from St Helens and made his debut in Sunday's 48-10 National League One win at Oldham.
With Australian David Peachey sacked and the club's other recognised full-back Gavin Dodd injured, former Halifax and Warrington player Daryl Cardiss will take over at full-back.
Vikings coach Steve McCormack, who has recalled centre Darren Woods from a month's loan at Swinton, said: "We'll have to have a look at some of the promising junior players at the club, which is always positive."
Captain Terry O'Connor, the veteran former Wigan prop, is undergoing intensive treatment on a calf injury in a bid to line up against the French outfit.
Widnes became only the seventh lower-division team to triumph over Super League opposition in 113 inter-league Cup clashes when they beat Castleford 14-4 in the fourth round.
They are the only team to have twice knocked out Super League opposition, having won 17-10 at Workington in 1996, and hope to complete a notable hat-trick at the Halton Stadium on Sunday.
Whitehaven will be without cup-tied forwards Ricky Wright and Scott Teare, but coach Dave Rotheram is hoping that Chris McKinney and Craig Chambers, the 32-year-old brother of Warrington assistant coach Gary Chambers, will be fit to return from injury to take their places.
Warrington are without props Paul Rauhihi and Chris Leikvoll and second-rower Mike Wainwright, in addition to long-term casualties Toa Kohe-Love, Rob Parker and Chris Bridge, whose comeback has been put on hold.
Half-back Bridge was hoping to return this weekend but will now be out for another month after undergoing surgery last night on an injured ankle.
Warrington coach Paul Cullen, who was in charge of Whitehaven from 2000-02, said: "We had a few injuries going into the Saints game and picked up a few more during that game and those players won't be risked.
"But no-one will be rested. We're treating this game with the respect that Whitehaven deserve."
The Wolves have put their kick-off back to 4pm to avoid a clash with the Vikings' televised tie.

MINI-COACHING 'Real Coaching'
By Matt O'Hanlon ARL Level 3 Coach
In my last article titled 'Coaching the Mini-Mod Team' I finished by presenting an outline of the development of exposure to the demands of the team game.
In that development a sequence was demonstrated for the skill of drawing the man that could be used from the basic skill, right
through to the game.
As with all theory it is great on paper but in the real world and in
coaching mini players the coach is at the very centre of the real coaching world, there is often a fair gap between theory and practice.
In this article I am going to focus on the mini coach and some steps, drills, activities and practices I have found useful in coaching kids in the mini age groups.
As you prepare for coaching your mini team, I will provide some things I have found helpful and that you may like to try.
Checklist Before Training Commences
An important job for any coach is to be prepared, but when coaching 6-7 year olds this is even more important from both a position of control, and from your position of responsibility.
If possible all players should bring their own water bottle, and a football, if impossible encourage players to bring water bottles and the club to buy footballs.
Markers that are colour co-ordinated (I would suggest 16 with 4 of each colour and numbered with thick Nikko pen) essential for any mini-mod session.
It is always handy to have a parent rostered on for each session.
Once these issues have been attended too you as coach are ready to get on with the job.
That is to teach and coach the kids, not only how to play, but also to develop an appreciation of sport in general and rugby League specifically.
Development of a Coaching Method
a) Exposure To Demands of a Team Game
Using the outline for the development of exposure to the demands of the team game set out below and discussed in 'RLCM' Book 9 we can, as coaches, try and prepare our sessions around development of the skills and techniques required to play the mini game.
Outline For Skill Development
1. Basic skills
2. Sequence
3. Opposition - Token - Controlled - Competitive
4. Practice
5. Conditioned game
