WORLD CUP EUROPEAN PRELIMINARY QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT
RUSSIA 40 defeated HOLLAND 14
Four tries from outstanding Moscow Lokomotiv centre Denis Korolev saw Russia ease to victory in The Hague, as the first steps were taken on the road to the 2008 Rugby League World Cup in Australia.
A big, athletic visiting outfit had too much all round power for the gallant Dutch who had the honour of scoring the competition's first try through Coventry Bears' second rower James Howitt in the sixth minute of an entertaining clash.
Korolev claimed his first touchdown soon after and the Russians swept into a lead they were not to relinquish on the next set when fellow centre Sergey Dobrynin broke the cover, Artem Grigoryan adding the first of his four conversions.
Two tries in three minutes put the visitors in charge midway through the first half, Korolev posting his second and then sending his winger Sergey Bychkov across to make it 22-4.
With hooker Roman Ovchinnikov driving the side forward in a terrific display, Korolev completed his hat trick on the half hour but Holland retained a glimmer of hope when their man of the match Howitt powered over for his second try, goaled by skipper Aaron de Jager.
Andrey Koltykhov's touchdown three minutes into the second half effectively ensured victory for the Cossacks before Korolev bagged his fourth with another surging run.
On the hour Koltykhov snared his brace and his side's eighth try but the inexperienced hosts earned tremendous credit for battling to the end and were rewarded when scrum half de Jager claimed the final points with well deserved score.
The other two nations in the group, Serbia and Georgia, meet in Belgrade on 13th May in the next tie.
HOLLAND - Tries: Howitt (6, 38), de Jager (79); Goal: de Jager
RUSSIA - Tries: Korolev (10, 22, 30, 50), Dobrynin (12), Bychkov (25), Koltykhov (43, 61); Goals: Grigoryan 4
