Benji Marshall may be dropped
By Steve Mascord
Benji Marshall may be dropped from New Zealand's trans-Tasman Test side today if it costs too much to insure him, Kiwi officials have revealed.
In a dramatic development after the 21-year-old was named in Brian McClennan's starting side yesterday for the Suncorp Stadium clash with Australia, an insurance premium quoted from London this morning could rule him out.
Wests Tigers are sending head trainer Andrew Leeds to the Gold Coast today to check Marshall's troublesome shoulder. "We'll make an informed decision, hopefully tomorrow, on whether the risk is warranted for all of us," NZRL general manager Peter Cordtz said.
"One of the benefits of having Andrew Leeds up there is that he and our medicos will assess the risk from a medical point of view.
"I'll have a discussion with Steve (Noyce, Wests Tigers CEO) and the relevant directors at NZRL tomorrow and we'll make a call in and around financial risk."
Because Marshall had a pre-existing problem, he would have "a loaded premium", Cordtz said.
The most the NZRL has paid to insure a whole team is $NZ33,000 ($A27,700).
Asked how much they would be prepared to pay for Marshall, Cordtz said: "That's the . . . well, hopefully it's not a million dollar question.
"It's pretty tough to try and put a value on his likely contribution to the Test match at this stage.
"I'd be doing the 'how long's a piece of string' thing if I was going to try to guess what level we'd go to," Cordtz said.
Noyce confirmed the premiers had raised the issue of insurance with the NZRL but did not want to discuss the issue.
It is understood the club wants to make sure it is compensated for the entire period Marshall is out if he suffers a sixth shoulder injury.
Although Marshall was named at halfback by the Kiwis, it is understood he will be on the bench for kick-off.
The Courier-Mail also understands the club has been assured Marshall will play only about 40 minutes if he is cleared by insurers.
"I've had a talk to the coach and he's assured me of certain things," coach Tim Sheens said.
"He's still got to be passed fit - it's all hypothetical until that happens."
But Sheens confirmed he was more worried about how much Marshall had to play than whether he started.
"It's fatigue that is the concern," he said.
There are no rules regarding the naming of Test starting teams - even an hour before kick-off - so Australia may not know who it is facing until the Kiwis run on.
