Warriors Coach Looks to New Talent
By Peter Jessup
The Warriors and Canberra Raiders both have big guns missing from their trial game at North Harbour Stadium on Sunday but will field sides that are otherwise close to their full NRL line-ups.
Steve Price, who was yesterday confirmed as Warriors captain for 2006 and Ruben Wiki, his deputy, are rested because their qualities are known and new coach Ivan Cleary wants to see what others can produce.
Starting at prop are George Tuakura, an Otahuhu stalwart with experience in France and Queensland, and Evarn Tuimavave.
Cleary said that Tuakura, 30, had earned selection by showing at training how much he wanted to play and that he saw Tuimavave as a prop rather than a second rower where he has had runs in the NRL.
Fullback Brent Webb has a groin strain and is left out for Tony Martin, who returns after a neck problem that ended his 2005 season in June.
The Raiders have rested Jason Smith and try Junior Kangaroos half William Zillman at five-eighth. Jason Croker is also being kept back.
Ruled out with injuries are Todd Carney and Michael Hodgson.
There is a better atmosphere about the Warriors this season, illustrated with lots of talk on the training field yesterday.
Cleary said the pre-season preparation had been good, there was an enthusiasm in the squad driven by new players and it was up to individuals to show their enthusiasm.
He didn't expect a perfect exhibition - rather one that showed some new combinations forming, that got rid of off-season rust and that gave the new boys a chance to showcase their talent.
The Warriors development squad - which includes some highly rated youngsters, including the Mt Albert trio of Patrick Ah Van, Robinson Godfrey and Daniel O'Regan - will play against a North Harbour Bartercard Cup selection in the curtainraiser.

Newcastle Approaches Sheens Over Coach Role
Brent Read and Stuart Honeysett
PREMIERSHIP-winning coach Tim Sheens last night revealed he had received an approach from Newcastle - but insisted his preference is to remain with Wests Tigers beyond this season.
Sheens, in talks with the Tigers over extending his contract, confirmed the Knights had lodged an informal interest on his return from the World Club Challenge.
The Australian reported on Wednesday that Sheens was Newcastle's favoured replacement for Michael Hagan, who will join Parramatta in 2007.
"My discussions (with the Knights) have been informal and I am currently discussing things with my own club, which is where my preferences lie, which is what I told Newcastle," Sheens said.
"It's just an expression of interest."
Sheens is one of the most successful coaches in the game, having won four premierships with two clubs -- Canberra and the Tigers.
His effort in leading the Tigers to last year's title was regarded as one of the finest of his career.
The club started the season as rank outsiders and finished it as premiers, beating North Queensland in the grand final.
Early this week, Tigers chief executive Steve Noyce said he planned to step-up talks with Sheens with a view to ensuring he remained at the club.
Tigers director Ben Elias last night stressed the club's desire to hold on to their coach.
"From the (Tigers) point of view he's been a great asset," Elias said. "He has a great relationship with Noyce and the club. The players respect him."
Sheens is the latest in a succession of coaches to be linked to Newcastle.
The Knights have also made an approach to Canberra's Matthew Elliott, although he is expected to re-sign with the Raiders.
North Queensland's Graham Murray has also been mooted as a prospective candidate, although the Cowboys board was expected to offer him an extension last night.
A push for Parramatta assistant Peter Sharp, early favourite for the job, appears to have lost momentum.

Football Parents, Support, Smiles and Sporting Success.
By Wayne Goldsmith
Continued from Thursday
These are the most common questions asked by sporting parents:
QUESTION 9:
What can I do to help my child achieve their goals in Rugby League?
Answer:
Be patient with progress.
Be tolerant of mistakes and poor performances.
Be calm and dignified at sporting events.
Learn to accept wins or losses graciously.
Allow (the players) plenty of breathing space.
Offer praise with success.
Encourage involvement in other pursuits.
Encourage independence and self-sufficiency.
Above all, keep football in perspective. Be supportive rather than intrusive.
Key comment: Love them.
QUESTION 10:
How can I tell if my child is doing too much?
Answer:
There are several signs to look for in the over trained or chronically tired sporting child:
· They seem tired all the time and generally lethargic.
· They may appear irritable, quiet, moody - maybe even sad
· They develop a minor illness or health problem
that doesn't seem to go away, e.g. repeated
occurrence of sinus problems, cold sores that don't
clear up, consistent gastro intestinal / upper
respiratory problems.
· They don't seem to sleep well.
· Their weight fluctuates considerably
· They develop social problems with school, friends
and or family.
Key comment: Just like you when you are tired!
Summary
In this century, sport can provide an opportunity for
kids to learn important social and personal skills that
they may not be able to learn in any other institution.
Health, fitness, movement and activity are life long
habits...and habits for a long life.
Rugby league is a challenging, fun, skills based game
that provides the opportunity for young players to
develop physically, mentally and emotionally
PROVIDING the goals of the three key elements of
the team program - THE PLAYERS - THE COACH
AND THE PARENTS are all working together to
achieve the same things.
Kids don't care how much you know, they want to
know how much you care. Coaches and parents play
a vital role in the development of every player.
The single most important thing parents can give their
kids is unconditional love and support AND the single
most important thing coaches can give parents is
education on how to be a better rugby league parent.
