NRL Edict on Gower Leniency
Brent Read and Stuart Honeysett
THE NRL has warned Penrith it will demand a 'please explain' from the club if it attempts to water down its punishment of former captain Craig Gower.
NRL chief executive David Gallop delivered the warning yesterday as Gower's family broke their silence on the issue, saying the former Penrith skipper felt betrayed by the club.
The Australian revealed yesterday the Panthers were ready to return the captaincy to Gower in a desperate attempt to appease their halfback and keep him from taking up offers in England.
Penrith officials have subsequently denied Gower could be restored to the position, although The Australian understands it remains a possibility, if not now then once the season starts.
Gower, on his honeymoon in Vietnam, and his manager Greg Willett will speak to club officials on Thursday when the Panthers will attempt to placate their disgruntled former captain, who is believed to have officially requested a release.
Gallop, in Detroit for the Super Bowl, is monitoring the situation and said he would seek an explanation if the Panthers altered Gower's punishment.
Gower was stripped of the captaincy and fined $100,000 ($70,000 of which was suspended) for a series of indiscretions while at a charity golf event late last year.
"I would want to fully understand the reasons and I would expect they would give us an update as soon as they can," Gallop said.
"For Craig and the club's sake, I hope the situation settles down so they can concentrate on preparing for the season."
Gower is yet to talk publicly on the issue, however, his brother Jason yesterday spoke on behalf of the family.
Jason said the Panthers had ignored his brother's years of loyal service in meting out their punishment. He said the family was also disappointed Gower had been made to look like a "spoilt brat".
"He's given his all for the club," Jason said. "Emotionally he feels a bit hard done by. He's a tough bloke, he's copped plenty. He's had people spit on him in the street after losses. He's played with compound fractures. He's bled for that club.
"The portrait that's being painted - they've made out he's a spoilt brat."
Jason said his brother wanted to finish his career with the Panthers, where he has played all his first-grade football. However, Gower is being wooed by several English clubs, including recently promoted Super League side Castleford.
"He's been a Penrith junior since day dot," Jason said. "He played three or four years of under 7s. He's never moved from the club or the Penrith district. Up until a month ago his statement was he would be a Panther until the end. That was the idea behind signing the big contract."
Jason also dismissed suggestions Gower's punishment had caused a rift in the club. Reports have speculated Gower has fallen out with Tony Puletua, the man who replaced him as captain.
"He's never bagged any player that's ever been there," Jason said. "He's stuck by them. He's never said a bad word about anyone. They're a tight-knit bunch, don't worry about that. There's no rift between any of the players."

Football Parents, Support, Smiles and Sporting Success.
By Wayne Goldsmith
Continued from Monday
These are the most common questions asked by sporting parents:
QUESTION 3:
Do young Rugby League players need a special diet?
Answer:
No. Not unless they have special needs or health issues which require dietary control, e.g. diabetes.
Providing they eat a balanced diet of carbohydrates, proteins and fats it is unlikely that a young, developing player needs a special diet.
The important issue is to encourage young players to develop eating practices which become lifetime healthy lifestyle habits.
Importantly, kids should be educated on the key elements of a healthy, nutritious diet (i.e. low on salt, low on saturated fat, low on processed sugars) as early as possible.
Parents are often tempted to try short cuts like buying muscle building powders, high protein sports drinks and glucose tablets to help their child achieve their football goals. It must be said that none of these products are likely to make a difference to the child's playing and taking them may even be counter productive.
Key comment: Vitamins and minerals do not make champions.
QUESTION 4:
How do kids balance school and sport?
Answer:
School comes first. There is no getting away from this.
No player plays for ever and at some time in their life, having the basics of a good education will be important.
However, success at Rugby League and success at school is possible.
There are literally hundreds of first grade footballers who have also completed university studies.
High achieving players are usually high achieving students as they learn time management skills, dealing with stress, team building, communication skills and other important skills in their training and preparation for football.
Key comment: School and sport DO mix.
