From 6.30am this morning nearly 100 NRL players will begin making their way to more than 40 destinations across NSW, Queensland and Victoria as part of the NRL's three-day Qantas Community Carnival.

Kids young and old from Biloela to Wangaratta have been preparing for months for the likes of Craig Fitzgibbon, Willie Mason and Mark Riddell to return to classrooms, visit hospitals, host skills clinics and take part in trivia nights.

NRL Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop, will join the Raiders in Gunnedah today.

"This is one of those really enjoyable points of the year and it's also exciting because it lets you know that the Telstra Premiership is just around the corner," Mr Gallop said.

"I believe all clubs and coaches at all levels should have a copy of RLCM Books as a coaching resource"    Wayne Bennett  - Brisbane Broncos

Football Parents, Support, Smiles and Sporting Success.

By Wayne Goldsmith

Continued from Tuesday

Kids today:

· They want it all
· They want it at a younger age
· They want it now
· They want it to be fun
· If they can't have it all, have it now and if it is not fun, they don't want it.

And in that same environment, the coach is trying to develop the players' skills, physical abilities, game sense and core values like integrity, humility and honesty.

The question is often asked, why Rugby League (and all other sports) struggles to keep kids involved after their mid teens.

Sport is often seen as focusing on traditional values of dedication, the development of a strong work ethic, commitment, team work and instructing players how to deal with adversity and pressure.

These values are (unfortunately) often interpreted as being out of step with many of the "fast food" attitudes of today's kids.

The challenge for all coaches is to use sport to teach and enhance the traditional values which apply to all people in all walks of life, but...encourage kids to take part in sport and "sell" sport in a way which appeals to their world - where entertainment is as important as education.

This is a dilemma for every coach:

How to make training and preparation interesting, stimulating and entertaining yet remain true to their coaching philosophies and core beliefs about coaching young players: that is, not compromising on coaching standards but still responding to the changing demands of today's teenage footballer.

It is here that coaches and parents should work together. The life lessons young players learn working together in a team environment can provide a positive experience and an advantage for them in their academic and business lives.

A young player who has worked together with team mates to achieve their goals learns a life lesson about team work and goal setting.

A young player who learns to execute skills in the pressure of a final learns a valuable life lesson about dealing with pressure and stress.

For 10 years the RLCM has been an essential part of any serious footballing library and the CD-ROM enables coaches and league players at all levels to have quick, hands on coaching material compiled by ARL accredited coaches and league experts.

As with the ultimate aim of the CD-ROM, RLCM's objective for 10 years has been to provide up to date coaching information and techniques for coaches and players to assist with the development, knowledge and education of all associated with the game.

Through the CD-ROM we have created the most comprehensive manual to assist coaches with the growth and development of the team's skill base while enhancing the individual's mental, physical and coordinative progress from their formative years through to senior level.

"The CD-ROM will ensure this valuable coaching information
is kept as a resource for future years within a club, school or
organisation at all levels."
