Canberra Raiders have entered the race to snap up St Helens' Australian centre Jamie Lyon for the 2007 season.
The 24-year-old, out of contract at the end of next season, had a superb debut year for the club in 2005 and won the Super League Man of Steel Award.
He is reportedly keen to return home, where Manly are favourites to sign him, but face competition from Canberra.
"A lot of clubs will be interested in him - including us," Raiders manager Don Furner told the Sydney Sun-Herald.
"We're after a quality centre and we'll have the money to get one.
"We'll be watching him closely over the next few months and will be making sure his manager knows we're interested."
Lyon, who scored 194 points for Saints last season courtesy of 24 tries and 49 goals, became only the fourth foreigner to be named the Super League's top player.
His current employers have not given up hope of persuading him to sign a new contract.

Injury-prone Kiwis prodigy Sonny Bill Williams will modify his playing style in a bid to preserve his fragile body for what he hopes will be a trouble-free NRL season.
Renowned as an audacious offloader, the second rower will temper his desire to keep the ball alive after speaking to Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes about avoiding serious injuries that have limited his effectiveness over the last two seasons.
Williams started last year as the hottest name in the game but an ankle injury against the Sharks in round four and then crushed knee cartilage just minutes into his return match in round 13 saw him sidelined for the season which included the Kiwis' Tri-Nations victory.
He reached another milestone in his recovery from a knee injury this week by completing a full session with the team last week and should be back for the season opener in March.
His two serious injuries last year came from gang tackles as he tried to offload and Folkes has tried to convince him to go against his natural instinct and submit to the tackle.
"It's an experience thing," Folkes told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper. "He's got a great set of skills and physically he's got everything but he's still 20 years of age. His natural instinct is to stay on his feet and offload the ball and that will take a while to change."
Williams admitted he wanted to be more strategic with his offloads and when to take the tackle and play-the-ball. "The last two times I got injured I was half through a gap and blokes were hanging on my leg and I rolled it over. I need to pick my times and not look for the offload all the time."

The new club at Canungra held a special Come and Try Day at their Moriarty Park grounds on Sunday.
Children of all ages and both sexes attended the event.
Formed just last November, the Canungra junior club boasts an all-female executive committee and a progressive approach to linking with the community.
President Kim Harding is supported at the head of the organisation by Secretary Jenny Thomas and Treasurer Delvine Broderick.
"The all-female executive is something we like to promote," Harding said.
"To look at me you wouldn't think I was a diehard league fan, but I definitely am. My husband and I absolutely love the game.
"We intend to offer a mentoring program to all the children that join up and help them progress in many facets, not just with football.
"We will look for leaders in the local community to address the children and assist their general development."
The groundswell of interest in the Canungra area forced the hand of Southern Division last year to admit a new team from the area.
Surrounding localities such as Mount Tamborine, Jimboomba and Beaudesert will make for healthy rivalry on the hinterland, with other games to be played against Gold Coast teams.
While a club logo is yet to be settled on, it is likely the juniors will adopt the 'Loggers' moniker of the senior outfit.
Sponsors are still being actively sought.

"I believe all clubs and coaches at all levels should have a copy of RLCM Books as a coaching resource" Wayne Bennett - Brisbane Broncos
Football Parents, Support, Smiles and Sporting Success.
By Wayne Goldsmith
Parents love their children and want nothing but the best for them.
Behaviours that others may see as "pushy", sporting parents see as "lovingly supportive".
What a coach may interpret as "sticking their noses in", sporting parents see only a genuine interest in their child's development.
This difference in perspective and the difficulty in being able to be objective where their kids are concerned often lead parents into a conflict situation with coaches, other parents, officials and eventually their own children.
I have done hundreds of talks to sporting parents around the world. Many times parents have approached me after a talk and said "I hear what you say, but you don't know my child. He is different".
Whilst every child is indeed an individual, what all children have in common are parents who have high opinions of their child's ability to do everything.
It starts early - the first day home from the hospital.
"Here is a picture of my baby. He is the most beautiful baby I have ever seen and I am not just saying that because he is mine".
Then around two years of age:
"My child is much more advanced than the other children - talking and walking before other kids, and I am not just saying that because he is mine".
Then at school.
"He is well advanced for his age. He can do things that most five year olds can't. I'm not just saying that because he is my son".
Then naturally at sport.
"He is the best full back in the district. He really is. I'm not just saying that because he is my son".
The football parent is merely extending their natural feelings of love and support for their child into the sporting environment.
This article aims to help parents of young Rugby League players (and the coaches who have to manage those parents) deal with some of the critical issues in sport and parenting.
