New Boys Step Out in Tigers' First Trial

Steve Ricketts

NEW signings Jamaal Lolesi, Sam Harris, Ryan O'Hara and Keith Galloway will make their debuts for NRL premiers Wests Tigers in tonight's trial against a Group 4 representative side at Gunnedah in northern NSW.

Former Bulldog Lolesi, Harris (Manly), O'Hara (Canberra) and Galloway (Cronulla) are vying for spots in the Tigers' final squad for the World Club Challenge clash with Bradford at Huddersfield in England on February 3.

The Tigers leave Sydney for England on Sunday with coach Tim Sheens keen for a hitout before the trip, particularly as Bradford already has played several trials.

Tigers five-eighth Benji Marshall and lock Dene Halatau are unavailable for the trip because of shoulder surgery while forward Todd Payten (ankle) is in doubt.

Grand final winger Pat Richards and second-rower Mark O'Neill will be spectators at Huddersfield. Both have signed for English clubs, Richards with Wigan and O'Neill with Leeds.

Bulls Name Strong Squad for Robbie Paul Testimonial

engage Super League Champions Bradford Bulls will play their full squad ahead of the Carnegie World Club Challenge in tonight's game against Hull KR, which is Robbie Paul's testimonial game.

Lesley Vainikolo and Paul Deacon will miss the game, together with Stanley Gene, knee and Chris McKenna, hamstring, but Brian Noble is keen to point out that supporters will see a very competitive game from the Bulls.

"It is a really important game for us for two reasons. Firstly we need to say a fond farewell to Robbie Paul and place on record our thanks for the magnificent service he has given to both the club and the game over the past twelve years. He has had iconic status here and that is reflected in the people who are coming to play in his game, Henry Paul, Brian McDermott. James Lowes and Steve McNamara will all take part in the game at some stage.

Secondly it is our last game before next week's Carnegie World Club Challenge and it is a vital part of our build up. We will be fielding virtually our full WCC side and supporters will get a chance to see them in action ahead of next week's game. "

Prices are £12.00 adults and £6.00 concessions and entry is available at the turnstiles on the night.

NZ Warriors Unveil New Jersey and a Friendlier Attitude

By Peter Jessup

The Warriors unveiled a sleek new jersey yesterday, as well as a friendlier attitude towards the Auckland Rugby League and its clubs, the New Zealand Rugby League and the fans.

Warriors will attend registration days at the start of the season and prizegivings at the end for each of Auckland's 32 clubs.

A "junior Warrior" promotion will see player-of-the-day certificates issued to all Auckland junior teams up to age 16.

Clubs can earn money by selling season passes.

New chief executive Wayne Scurrah promised the club would be "open and transparent" regardless of whether news was good or bad.

He said work was needed to rebuild connections that had faltered so the club could reach its potential. He wanted the best playing for the Warriors, not against them.

Unlike his predecessor, Mick Watson, Scurrah will not rule on who comes and goes from the player roster. Those decisions will be made by the coaching staff, with former All Black coach John Hart overseeing as director of football.

"It's my aim that we do not lose players who are on contract," Scurrah said when questioned about the weakening of the playing roster through players shown the door and others who sought early release.

The players have new attractions with investment and other off-field training to make them feel wanted. It was a two-way street, said Scurrah, and in return the club expected discipline and accountability.

He has attended one ARL meeting of clubs, the first time the franchise has been represented in five years.

The Auckland league is already looking to improve its links to the Warriors by making Ericsson number two its major ground, with talks continuing with the Auckland Regional Authority to move the old Railway Stand from Carlaw Park to the northern side of number two.

NZRL chairman Selwyn Pearson, the national body's Warriors board member, is now getting the information available to other board members.

Talks continue to see the NZRL minor shareholding assumed by the Warriors' majority owner, Cullen Sports, an issue Scurrah hoped would be resolved within weeks.

The Warriors are seeking NRL help to avoid Friday nights, which are bad for crowds, as well as Saturdays that clash with Auckland Blues games.

They are readjusting travel schedules, trying to avoid long hauls to Perth and Townsville.

"I believe all clubs and coaches at all levels should have a copy of RLCM Books as a coaching resource"    Wayne Bennett  - Brisbane Broncos

Mental Toughness Without The Mental.

With Steve Anderson

Continued from Thursday

Again, referring to his Storm days, Steve talks of players like Steven Bell and Matt Geyer.

"They were kids coming through. They're the ones I honed in on and now they wouldn't even need a diary because it's been hammered in."

Steve added, "It's all about preparing the player for not only execution in a game sense but his ability to perform consistently under pressure. It all starts with the unopposed teaching of a skill then opposed practice and then the game situation. The more games you get under your belt, the better you'll do it. The better you'll be at doing it under pressure."

So, younger players, for you it means not just shining at that Under 19 Carnival but having that consistent background - the resilience, durability and consistency, that will take you through the tough times later on.

And the discipline - the discipline to do even the little things which are the foundation of your future in Rugby League.

For the senior player - well, again it's 'all of the above' plus the discipline of performing consistently game after game.

So for all, it's a little like the old adage about buying real estate - just replace 'position' with Preparation, Preparation, Preparation.
