Deacon to Put Horror Behind Him

Great Britain scrum-half Paul Deacon refuses to be haunted by bad memories as he prepares to return to the site of his life-threatening facial injury.

At the weekend he will make a comeback for Bradford at Huddersfield - where he was injured in a tackle by Kiwi Nigel Vagana in November's Tri-Nations game.

The 26-year-old told BBC Five Live: "I might have a few flashbacks but it won't make much difference to me.

"It's just a field with grass on and two sets of sticks at each end of it."

He had to have part of his face virtually rebuilt after Vagana's tackle during the match on 12 November.

His upper jaw and cheekbone were smashed and doctors feared for his life as blood vessels burst in his throat.

Now two titanium plates, which will remain in place for the rest of his life, hold together his cheekbones and top jaw.

"I'm starting to look somewhere near normal, the surgeon did a great job," he said on Thursday's Sport On Five.

"I remember everything - my first thoughts were that I'd just bust my nose.

"I remember walking off the field and I thought I must have broken my jaw and then I could feel all this blood going down my throat.

"It's just one of those things. I've seen much worse tackles and I was just unlucky with where he caught me and the damage he did."

But Deacon, who will also line up in Huddersfield for Bradford's Carnegie World Club Challenge match against Wests Tigers on 3 February, refuses to let the life-threatening incident affect him.

"It was blown out of all proportion," he added. "Once the bleeding had stopped, it was only a broken bone.

"I don't think there is a big psychological battle, to be honest. The surgeon has given me the all-clear and he said the jaw is as strong now as it was before.

"Sport throws up these ironic things all the time - playing on the same pitch. I won't be bothered by that."

Joey's Rep Days Over?

There is a strong possibility that Newcastle star Andrew Johns has played his last State of Origin game for New South Wales.

Johns, who has only just returned to training with the Knights this week after knee surgery, said he will only play for the Blues in 2006 if he is 100 per cent fit.

"State of Origin is just the pinnacle, the game in Melbourne is very attractive, I'd love to go and play there in a packed house," Johns told AAP.

"But I've got to be smart about it.

"If I am pulling up short after (NRL) games, I've got to do the right thing by the Knights.

"It's a long way down the track and I'll decide it (then)."

2005 was a year to forget for the Newcastle halfback as he spent a large portion of the season on the sideline with a broken jaw.

To compound the disappointment, he then had to cut short his contribution to the Kangaroos tour at the end of the year because of a troublesome flare-up to his right knee.

Johns has just started to run again on the repaired joint as he said the pain that dogged him last season is no longer there.

However, he admitted he will have to be very careful with the workload he places on the irksome knee.

"At this stage of my career I don't have to be as fit as I was when I was 21, I can pick and choose when I am in and out of the game," he said.

"Fingers crossed, I can play a couple more years."

Johns will not play in any of Newcastle's pre-season trial matches but is set to run out in the curtain-raiser against Paramatta at EnergyAustralia Stadium in March.

The Coach and Planning.

With Brian Canavan - Sydney Roosters

Continued from Thursday

Brian also stated that overseas research pointed to a greater improvement in strength and power under the Step Plan. This was probably due to the significant challenge to the body in each subsequent block.

The third method Brian labelled The Skill - Strength Plan.

This basically involved enhancing skills before heavy work. That is, practice of the required skills with little fatigue before increasing time, distance and repetition loads.

This plan he suggested as best fitting the country setting particularly keeping in mind the retention of players and the enjoyment aspect.

"After all," he said, "you don't want a young bloke driving an hour in his ute to get to training and then flogging him. You won't see him next week."

Finally, Brian admitted the job was a complex task. There were so many factors to be taken into account.

These ranged from the level of skills already evident, the locality, the age of the participants, and in the case of some recruits moving from a country club to the top level, what he referred to as the 'training age' of the player.

"However," he implored, "plan it, allow for rest and recovery, and above all, remember why we're there - for the enjoyment and improvement."

So there we are. With that resolution for careful preparation next season, you, like that cigar chewing leader of the old television show, 'The A Team', will be able to sit back and say, "I love it when a plan comes together."

"Plan it, allow for rest and recovery, and above all, remember why we're there - for the enjoyment and improvement."

Concludes

"I believe all clubs and coaches at all levels should have a copy of RLCM Books as a coaching resource"    Wayne Bennett  - Brisbane Broncos
