Gary Dunbar Cannot Wait

By Lee Gaskin

WITH only a month until the whistle blows to signal the start of the 2006 season, Queensland Rugby League Wide Bay Division co-ordinator Gary Dunbar cannot wait to get his first glimpse of the standard of competition in the region.

Appointed last October, Dunbar said he was keen to see the level of play after hearing good reports.

"Wide Bay has always shown potential, but for one reason or another it's never been able to reach that next level," Dunbar said.

"It's just a matter of pulling it all together."

Before he accepted the post at the Maryborough base, Dunbar was most recently the general manager for the Northern Territory Rugby League, and was also involved in the running of the Arafura Games in Darwin.

"I know it will be a big challenge, especially with the success of other codes, but I'm here basically to work with the local leagues and to assist with club development," he said.

Another of his previous positions was located in North Queensland, and Dunbar said the popularity of the game had gone to another level in that region on the back of the Cowboys NRL rise from the wilderness.

"Footy has always been big up there, but now it is all anyone talks about," he said.

As reported in yesterday's NewsMail, a Wide Bay selection will play the Brisbane Broncos on February 4, with a Wide Bay representative side picked after the start of club competitions for the Division Championships on May 27 and 28 on the Sunshine Coast.

Juniors are the lifeblood of any sport, and Dunbar said rugby league was no different.

"Wide Bay development officers will continue on the good work from last year in the schools, so we can encourage more and more youngsters to take up the game," Dunbar said.

All clubs will hold a state-wide open day during February, with the Queensland Junior titles to be held in Maroochydore from July 3 to 7.

Veteran Broncos prop Shane Webcke says a new training regime could extend his career but the club has not budgeted for him playing again in 2007. Webcke said yesterday he would seek a new deal with the Broncos mid-season if he felt he was playing good football and his body was up to another season. The 31-year-old former Test prop's current three-year deal with the club expires at the end of 2006 and chief executive Bruno Cullen said he expected this to be Webcke's swansong.

Super League newcomers Catalans Dragons
have completed their 25-man squad with the signing of France international winger Freddie Zitter, 26, from Barrow. Zitter scored a try in France's 22-12 defeat by England in October and ran in 14 tries for Barrow last season.

Former St Helens and Hull coach Shaun McRae has been handed a 12-month extension to his contract with the South Sydney Rabbitohs. The deal will keep him at Souths, who won six of their final eight games last season to avoid the wooden spoon, until the end of the 2007 season.

A neck injury threatens to end the career of Melbourne Storm prop Dennis Scott.  He has been diagnosed with a bulging disc in his neck and his playing future is uncertain. The powerful former Brisbane and Bulldogs forward who played 19 matches for Storm in 2005 said he was doing everything he could to remain positive as specialists assess the severity of the problem.

Hull captain Richard Swain admits the club have yet to offer him an extension to his contract, but will be willing to sign one providing it suits his family. The ex-New Zealand Test hooker has a year remaining on his deal at the KC Stadium and speculation has suggested he has been offered a further 12 months, but the 30-year-old revealed an offer has yet to materialise.

Arthur Beetson backed-up Mackay's bid to join the State League. Beetson said on Saturday that Mackay was one of the strongholds of rugby league in North Queensland and probably Australia.

''From a North Queensland point of view it would be great if places like Mackay and Cairns were in the State League, that would be great because it would mean the young players would not have to relocate to places like Townsville or Brisbane.''

The QRL late last year rejected Mackay's bid to join the State League this season, but Mackay and District Rugby League officials are planning another approach, probably in May or June, for admission next year.

PNG CENTRAL Rugby League will be host a two-day trial later this month to pick a team to compete in all PNGRFL-sanctioned events this year. The districts are Hiri West, Hiri East, Kairuku, Bereina, Rigo-Central, Rigo Coast, Marshall Lagoon and Aroma Coast. The trials will be held at the Sir Hubert Murray Stadium on Jan 26-27.

Workington Town 24 defeated Halifax 18 One swallow doesn't make a summer, so they say. But the result, and more importantly the performance, will have taken many rugby league pundits by surprise. Several weeks ago, Town coach Ged Stokes said that he felt that his side was ready to take on a National League One outfit in their only pre-season friendly against a semi-pro club. How right he was.

Fearsome forward Adrian Morley says salvaging a 2005  premiership with UK champions Bradford has reinvigorated his desire to add a 13th title to the Roosters' trophy cabinet in 2006. The Bondi Junction crowd favourite was awarded the rare privilege of finishing out the 2005 season with Bradford after the Roosters missed the NRL finals - mainly as a reward for his work ethic and contribution to the club.

The Coach and Planning.

With Brian Canavan - Sydney Roosters

Well, how is the season progressing? Is your team performing at the desired level or are there problems?

Are things going as you planned? Did you have a fully developed plan to start with?

It may be time to make a resolution about how you will plan a little more for next year's competition or attempt to improve in this season's performances.

Brian Canavan, Sydney Roosters' CEO, thinks this planning is very, very important.

"It encapsulates all the knowledge and information you have in written form. The coach or coaching director at any level needs to get that planning structure right and then things will operate within that structure," he said.

Brian was speaking at the Annual High Performance Camp organised by the NSW Academy of Sport at Narrabeen.

"The planning must be done pre-pre-season," he said. "It is difficult to plan when you are in the middle of a season because you are too busy looking at next week's performance whether you are coming off a win or a loss."

In the planning stage then, Brian reminded his audience not to lose sight of the main reason the players are there and that is for enjoyment and improvement.

This enjoyment or fun aspect may take different forms.

It may be the camaraderie, the "character" players in the side or individual experiences. Whatever the form, the coach should be mindful of, and plan for, enjoyment throughout the season.
