RLCM 'Everyday' Coaching Quote
"Play small sided games, but see if you cannot select those [games] that allow you to observe decision making.
"Get used to trying to see what the player is basing the decision making on, watch the opponents first and then see if the response is correct, rather than just watching your player."

'PENETRATING THE DEFENSIVE LINE'
by Glen Bayliss, Queensland Rugby League, the full article featured in Book 7
To score a try in Rugby League you have to simply get past the
oppositions defence. In a previous issue we looked at:-
One on One - the foundation of:
* Under plays
* Over plays
These are the two basic plays required to create and utilise 'space'
to penetrate the defensive line. The next step is to progress on to
situations that occur in a game and then develop training drills to
practice the timing and recognition of cues that are transferable
to game play.
a) Correct ball carriage by all players.
b) Shortening stride before changing angle
c) Players recognition of 'cues' for action.
d) Running of proper lines.
e) Passes to be 'on-side'.
f) Depth of support players.
g) Straightening of line once through defence line.
h) Football carrier staying on feet to 'stay alive'and be in support.
i) Coach to stand behind defenders to give feedback
j) Drill to progress from 'slow and passive' to 'game pace'.
Once these basics are developed, further combinations and plays can
be added which include 'face balls', 'decoy runners', 'switch' and
'drop off' passes.
All have one main purpose, creating space for the support player to
break the defensive line. This will only be achieved if the CONTRACT
is fulfilled by all parties.
"The football carrier will endeavor to create or widen a space
for the support carrier to run into. The support player must change
his angle of run to position himself to receive an on-side pass and
run into that part of the space furthest from his nominating
defender".
ONE SMALL EXTRACT from the 'PENETRATING THE DEFENSIVE LINE' feature
it appeared in RLCM Book 7.

RLCM Message Board ask your Coaching questions there.
Today's question is from Matthew O'Neill
QUESTION: Have any junior rep coaches done a yearly planner?
I've got to put one together for a course that I am doing.
I have only coached U16, Division 2 and I haven't been involved in rep side coaching so I am looking for some advice.
ANSWER from Kerry Bond.
Planning is a fairly simple process once you get a handle on it.
Planning is defined by the time available or time you are in control and the objectives/goals you either set or are part of your tenure. It can be a few weeks up to many years.
For example NRL coaches may have a 3 year plan to get a team to a certain level in the comp. On the other hand a rep coach would normally have a very short period of tenure some times measured in weeks but more often only months.
Once you have a gross time frame in which to work you then break this down into smaller units of time (phases or periods). You continue to break time frames down into smaller and smaller units. The smallest unit would be a period within a training session - eg: 20mins warm-up/stretching.
As time units get smaller the objective becomes more precise/specific and the description of activities more detailed. The less time you have the less precise/specific you can be.
It doesn't matter who, what or at what level you coach planning is always approached the same way - time period plus objectives/goals.

Follow the above link for a broader description.
Regards
Kerry
