RLCM 'Everyday' Coaching Quote

" Players must understand the principle of 'peeling', which is the player who ties the upper body holds down the player until the player around the legs releases. The upper body defender comes up with the tackled player and assumes the role of first marker."

By Glenn Bayliss from his 'Defence' articles that appear on the RLCM Drills CD-ROM

The Drills CD-ROM will ensure this valuable coaching information is kept as a resource for future years within a club, school or organisation at all levels.

Australia 14 - England 6 Half time at Brentford
By Ian Laybourn,

World champions Australia were being given a stiff work-out by youthful England in their opening tour game at Brentford tonight.

The Kangaroos were shaken by some determined defence by the Super League youngsters and stunned by an 80-metre try from St Helens winger Ade Gardner, who profited from a handling error by captain Darren Lockyer.

The tourists enjoyed the majority of the play in the first half at Griffin Park but looked decidedly rusty and fluffed three clear-cut tryscoring chances through poor handling.

Scrum-half Brett Kimmorley, who was at the heart of all his side's attacking moves, set up the game's first try when he slipped the attempted tackle of Chris Thorman on 14 minutes and, although the supporting Lockyer slipped as he tried to wrong-foot full-back Shaun Briscoe, he managed to regain his feet in time to send hooker Danny Buderus over the line.

England drew level four minutes later when Gardner swooped on Lockyer's dropped pass and Thorman kicked the conversion but they had all sorts of problems coping with the clever tactical kicking of Kimmorley.

Wingmen Matt Sing and Luke Lewis both dropped the ball in tryscoring positions and Lockyer lost the ball with the line beckoning after re-gathering another of Kimmorley's shrewd punts.

It was no surprise when Australia went back in front on 28 minutes, Sing outjumping Gardner to collect Kimmorley's high kick to the corner to touch down, and the outstanding Kimmorley then had a try disallowed for a knock-on by the video referee.

England were on the back foot for much of the first half but they were far from overawed and they were offered due respect by the visitors when Craig Fitzgibbon went for goal with an injury-time penalty, which added to his two earlier conversions.
