RLCM 'Everyday' Coaching Quote

" I think communication in defence is a big thing - that and being aware - aware of who you've got along side of you and who you are marking up to." John Lang from Coachtalk in RLCM Book 33

RLCM Comment - By Gary Roberts

Well it has finally happened and will the problems compound?

New Zealand has drawn first blood and Great Britain is licking its lips in anticipation.

The Australian Kangaroos, long seen as an icon in Rugby League and an example of how the game should be played, have now become vulnerable.

The Kangaroos have been International Champions for so long that some adults have never heard of or seen Australia lose a Test Series in their lifetime.

However, after an extremely poor showing in Auckland on Saturday, they have been exposed as a team with many problems.

Problems that may not be fixed before they play Great Britain in a three Test Series beginning at JJB Stadium at Wigan on November 8th.

A well-drilled NRL club side would have given the touring Kangaroos the same problems that the Kiwis did on Saturday.

The Kangaroos obviously have some player gelling problems which coach Anderson and staff will hopefully have rectified before November 8.

With that problem aside, Great Britain coach David Waite will be studying the video and noting Australia's persistence in running outside lines that makes players easy to contain and restrict yardage.

If the major point that changed the game in 2002 was the Roosters' defence, well a point in 2003 was how to overcome that defence.

Penrith proved that point in 2003.

Ricky Stuart's Roosters defence in 2002 virtually thanked teams who moved to the outside in attack as it played into the Roosters' defensive pattern.

John Lang and the younger coaches in the NRL are coming up with newer game plans that react to that style of defence by eliminating outside attacking plays. They, like the Roosters, will also punish by containing any team that wants to attack on the outside before getting to the 'green zone'.

For two simple examples, study the Broncos who persist with outside plays and measure their yardage and positive results from it, then do the same with Penrith's inside plays.

Then watch the replay of Saturday's Test match and note the similarities. It is not rocket science, but it won Penrith a GF and was a major difference between the two International teams on Saturday.

Simply put, the Kangaroos persisted in running outside lines for the majority of the match whilst the Kiwis ran an extremely high percentage of inside plays.

Whether Great Britain is up to the task, is not known, but as the Kiwis showed on Saturday, this 2003 Australian Kangaroos team can be defeated.

Remember the Kangaroos did lead 10-0, only to go in at half time 14-10 behind. They also led 16-14 with 25 minutes to go but were defeated 30-16 and the young 17-year-old halfback, Leuluai, had plenty of time to perform a behind a pack that dominated the opposition.

New Zealand 30 defeated Australia 16.
