RLCM 'Everyday' Coaching Quote for Friday

"If success in High Performance sport is as many people suggest, '99%
mental' then neglecting daily mental skills training is to neglect
the key to competition success.

"In many ways success is a choice - as it comes from the decisions
and choices players make in every training and competition situation."

Wayne Goldsmith from his article 'The Physchology of Winning' which
appeared in RLCM 29

ALEX MURPHY REPLACES SACKED TERZIS

By Ian Laybourn, PA Sport

All-time great Alex Murphy will make a sensational return to rugby
league at the age of 63.

The legendary Great Britain scrum-half has been lured back to the
game as football director of National League One club Leigh
Centurions, who have targeted their former favourite as the man to
take them into Super League.

The Centurions dropped a bombshell by sacking Australian Paul Terzis
just a month before the all-important Grand Final and then revealed
that Murphy would head up a new coaching team.

The club have installed former Wigan and St Helens commercial manager
Alan Rowley as chief executive and appointed former St Helens half-
back Tommy Martyn and another Leigh stalwart, Norman Turley, as
assistant coaches.

Leigh's directors landed their prize catch after flying to France,
where Murphy is currently on holiday with his wife.

"We managed to coax him out of retirement," said executive director
Derek Beaumont.

"He still has the club at heart and we're overwhelmed to have him
back."

Murphy will end a six-year exile from the game when he is confirmed
in his new post on Friday.

Dally Ms cancelled as talks collapse

By Steve Mascord and Brad Walter

Rugby league will have no official awards for the first time since
1967 after an industrial dispute between the players and the NRL last
night caused the cancellation of the Dally Ms.

Even during the bitter Super League war of 1994-97, awards nights
continued but a day of meetings at NRL headquarters yesterday
resulted in next Tuesday's ceremony being abandoned in the face of a
boycott threat from players.

NRL chief executive David Gallop said the league would lose more than
$100,000 as a result of the cancellation while chairman Malcolm
Noadsaid no winners would be announced.

"I wouldn't expect anyone to ever know who won these awards," Noad
said last night. "The people I have spoken to [involved in the Dally
Ms] certainly have no inclination to ever announce them."

Gallop insisted the NRL made major concessions at yesterday's meeting
with the players' association and described the cancellation
as "bizarre" and "a tragedy".

The premiership has had formal awards since the Rothmans Medal was
introduced in 1968. This year's dinner was to be held at the Hordern
Pavilion at a cost of about $500,000.

It now appears likely that votes under a series of categories for
2003 - including player of the year, coach of the year, team of the
year, rookie of the year and representative player of the year - will
be burned.

his players' performance because he is dealing with visible facts and
gathering specific data on what he feels is important.

Whether it is tackles, hit-ups or passes, the coach is able to pin
point the involvement of any player without the cumbersome video
play/pause/rewind and physical recording methods of the past.

The SPORTS PERFORMER will isolate - any statistic, players, plays,
events in the game or whatever a coach requires.

Any part of the game can be recorded and analysed in detail eg.
analysing a teams decision making on the fourth, fifth or sixth
plays, analysing an oppositions defense on the short side in their
red zone.
