Johns to lead Australia against Kiwis

World champions Australia named Newcastle halfback Andrew Johns as
captain on Sunday in their team to play New Zealand in a one-off test
on July 25.

Australia selectors named three new caps for the match at Sydney
Football Stadium. They are St.George-Illawarra prop forward Luke
Bailey and Sydney City's pair, wing Anthony Minichiello and lock
forward Luke Ricketson.

"He's a bloke that you appreciate playing with," Australia coach
Chris Anderson said of 30-year-old Ricketson.

"He does a lot of work in the game. He'll certainly have a lot of
work to do in this game. (He'll be) topping the tackle count,"
Anderson told reporters.

Minichiello scored three tries for New South Wales in the opening two
matches of the State of Origin series against Queensland, both won by
the Blues last month.

Selectors also rewarded Maroons wing Matt Sing who scored a hat-trick
of tries when Queensland won the third Origin match 36-6 in Brisbane
on July 16.

"I think Sing played well in all three games," Anderson said.

Australia came from behind to beat the Kiwis 32-24 in Wellington in
October last year.

Australia named only seven players from last year's side for the test
although Scott Hill, Trent Barrett and Craig Fitzgibbon were not
considered because of injury.

This question on Game Plans was posted 20th July

Question: An example of game plans wanted

Hi all,

I'm hoping you guys can help me. I am coaching an open side and we
have two basic game plans which I think work fairly well for us.

But I'am after examples of game plans from other people that have
worked for them. I want to basically utilise the best game plan that
would suit our side.

We have a lob-sided mix of ages with quite a few guys around the 20-
21 age group and others ranging up to 35. We have a good mix of speed
and size which can adapt to any game plan.

So if anyone could supply a few examples of game plans that have
worked for them so I can get some different mixes of game plans to
look at.

Thanks for your help and time.

Ryan Munger
mailto:whykikamookow@...

Answer from Rick

Ryan,

I have used game plans that combine three specific areas to target &
exploit an opponent. For example, if an opposition is using a
compressed defence against you, you can have your;

First set of a three set rotation to be a dummy drop-off/hit the
second runner set -

Second set to be close to the ruck plays set -

Third set to be working off the pivot with the occasional two pass
wide turn back inside.

This basic rotation would firstly target the edge captains in defence
making the central block shift thus spreading them out.

Then with the second set you are taking advantage of the defence
being spread by targeting their tight spots & markers.

On the third set you will again make the defence shift, but you will
test for lazy sliders not shutting the gate around defender 3 & 4.

Also you should have a couple of yardage sets for clearing your own
half so that you play good field position.

Tram-tracking down a corridor with various swing plays, power runs
one off the ruck, & dummy half runs attacking the "C" defender is a
fairly effective way of clearing your red zone.

If I had more specifics about what you are attempting to overcome
then I could be more specific, but I hope this helps anyway.

Regards,
Rick

Should be easy
PETER FRILINGOS

AUSTRALIA have picked a Test squad capable of beating New Zealand by
20 points at Aussie Stadium next Friday night.

The side has only three rookies in Luke Ricketson, Anthony
Minichiello and Luke Bailey and the way they performed for NSW in the
State of Origin series victory suggests they won't be over-awed by
the occasion.

No player more richly deserved a green and gold jumper than Roosters
back-rower Ricketson, who has spent most of the last decade knocking
on the door without success.

Coach Chris Anderson conceded the side was named after spirited
debate in the selection room with the centre, wing and five-eighth
positions the most contentious.

St George Illawarra's Shaun Timmins completed a fairytale return to
international football after missing nearly two seasons recovering
from knee reconstruction surgery.

He demonstrated amazing versatility to handle the foreign five-eighth
position for the Blues and gained the support of the selection panel
ahead of Craig Wing to wear the No. 6 jumper.

Queensland managed to get six players in the squad certainties Darren
Lockyer, Shane Webcke and Gorden Tallis with Matt Sing, Brent Tate
and Dane Carlaw getting there on the back on the Maroons' dominant 36-
6 win in the final Origin game last week.

Willie Talau's selection at five-eighth for the Kiwis brings back
memories of Olsen Filipaina's elevation to the Test side from
Balmain's reserve grade in the mid-1980s.

Filipaina responded to the challenge by out-playing King Wally Lewis
as the Kiwis conjured up one of their traditional shock victories
against the odds.

Talau is not built like the powerful Filipaina but coming from the
Bulldogs Premier League team he is sure to be highly motivated to
play for his country and to prove he should be in first grade.

It was hardly surprising to see rookie international coach Daniel
Anderson name eight of his Warriors players in the New Zealand squad
but having said that the failure to link form second-rower Joe
Guluvao with his Penrith partner Tony Puletua may be a decision the
coach turns out to regret.

From what I've seen this season Guluvao probably deserves to be in
the side ahead of Steve Kearney and is definitely entitled to have
scored a bench spot ahead of Monty Betham or Logan Swann.

By naming four forwards on the bench Anderson has left little doubt
he intends to go up the middle against the world champion Australians.

The choice of Ruben Wiki at prop and as captain ahead of either
Stacey Jones or Betham is interesting considering he has not been
used in either role lately with the Raiders.

Wiki can be inspirational but he is not a noted shot-caller or
tactician.

Even if Anderson is able to get his pack to match the Australians he
somehow has to convince many of his players, especially those who are
Warriors, that their tendency to play touch football in attack can
only lead to disaster at the game's ultimate level.

Blackout: here come the Kiwis

New Zealand followed the 'big is better' mantra while Australia
downsized. Friday's Test should be a monster clash, writes Roy
Masters.

Welcome to the Headbangers' Ball. The New Zealand selectors have
chosen a menacing mass of muscle and hustle for Friday night's Test
against Australia at Aussie Stadium, telegraphing a monster ball
contest.

Large men, identifiable mainly by their range of haircuts, most of
the Kiwis are capable of bench pressing a horse.

Australia have chosen a smaller team with the object of dancing
around the giants. The teams are similar only insofar as each has a
ball-playing half and an inexperienced five-eighth.

The Australian 17 is an uninspiring selection, a collection of
standouts, no alternatives and out-of-formers emerging from an Origin
series where they were at each others' throats.

By contrast, the Kiwis are gelled by a nucleus of seven Warriors,
plus the Auckland coach, and a tour last year of Great Britain and
France.

The unavailability of Newcastle's Ben Kennedy and the Roosters' Craig
Fitzgibbon has robbed Australia of size and mobility but remarkably
Knights second-rower Steve Simpson was never on coach Chris
Anderson's list, even though he demonstrated his availability last
Friday against Penrith.

Two tries to Parramatta and NSW centre Jamie Lyon yesterday in a romp
against South Sydney may have saved him but he was frequently beaten
on the outside in Origin III, resulting in three tries to Matt Sing,
the man he will feed on Friday.

The only beneficiary of the Australian selection is Newcastle, who
also have two players from the winning NSW team - centre Matthew
Gidley and winger Timana Tahu - missing out.

Morley's special treat

By JON GEDDES

SYDNEY Roosters prop Adrian Morley yesterday arranged a special treat
for his parents back home in England.

It was the try he scored, racing 30 metres to the line like a three-
quarter in the second half of the game against Manly.

"It was good to score in this game because it is on in the UK
tomorrow morning," Morley said after the match.

"They always show one full game a week, but the Roosters are very
rarely on."

But today Mary and Leo Morley will be able to sit back in the lounge
of their Salford home and watch their son score a spectacular
individual try as the Roosters ran away from the Sea Eagles.

"They were quite tired and I didn't think it would open up so
quickly," Morley said.

"I didn't look up, I had one thing on my mind to try and get to the
line. Thankfully I did."

Morley said if he hadn't have scored he would have been told off by
teammate Ryan Cross, who was right by his side.

Morley said the last time the Roosters were on television was in the
game against Newcastle when he also played quite well.

"I tell them I score every week so this will back me up, they think I
am a world beater over here," Morley said.

The powerful frontrower recently signed a new three-year deal with
the club, proving he has settled right into the Sydney lifestyle.

But he's uncertain about whether he will eventually return to live in
the old country.

Ricko's Roos debut

IT has taken 13 long years but finally Luke Ricketson will make his
debut for the Australian Kangaroos.

The Sydney Roosters star last night became one of three debutants
selected in the Australian team to meet New Zealand on Friday.

Fellow Roosters flyer Anthony Minichiello has also won selection on
the wing while rugged St George Illawarra prop Luke Bailey will
partner Shane Webcke in the front row.

Kangaroos coach Chris Anderson admitted debate around the selection
room table was lively with the most controversial omissions being
Newcastle pair Timana Tahu and Matthew Gidley.

"There wasn't a lot in the decisions they are all quality players,"
Anderson said.

Seven Queenslanders forced their way into the side after the Maroons
dominated Origin III with Dane Carlaw earning a starting spot in the
back row and Petero Civoniceva winning selection on the bench.

Forgotten winger Matt Sing, who has not been seen in representative
football for three years, won selection on the wing after a hat-trick
in Origin III capped a strong series.

Coach Anderson admitted this was the first time form in the Origin
series had been highly influential, straying from the usual policy to
remain loyal with players who have done the job in the past.

"State of Origin is the best forerunner you can have to pick a
national side," Anderson said.

"These are the form players of the Origin series."

Anderson endorsed the selection of experienced lock Ricketson,
suggesting his workaholic nature had earned him a starting jumper.

"He's a bloke you probably appreciate more to play with. He does a
lot of work in the game," Anderson said.

"He'll certainly have a lot to do in this game. [He'll be] topping
the tackle count."

Other talking points to come out of the team announced at Aussie
Stadium included Shaun Timmins being chosen as starting five-eighth
over the likes of Braith Anasta and Craig Wing.

Bolter Talau to put bite on Roos

By Stuart Honeysett

QUEENSLAND got seven of the eight players they wanted, Luke Ricketson
won his first Australian jumper after 13 years of trying, but it was
the selection of Willie Talau at five-eighth for New Zealand that
proved the big gest surprise after both teams were announced for
Friday night's Test match at Aussie Stadium.

In a move that brought back memories of Olsen Filipaina being chosen
to represent the Kiwis in 1985 from North Sydney's lower grades,
Talau was plucked out of the Bulldogs' premier division side that
beat Cronulla on Saturday night.

Talau has been languishing in premier league since signing with St
Helens last month and was given little hope of making the side to
face Australia after playing only 80 minutes of football since
returning from a knee injury, but he is considered one of the best
defenders at the Bulldogs and New Zealand.

Coach Daniel Anderson said last night his proven experience at top
level had been the driving force behind his selection.

"He can break tackles and create stuff as well he's a good runner of
the football (and) he's a very good defender," Anderson said.

"I know it puts a lot of pressure on Stacey (Jones), but I think he's
up to it."

Australian coach Chris Anderson said last night the Kiwis had tipped
their hand by choosing Talau at pivot.

"I'm surprised he's in the side at five-eighth, but that probably
says a little bit about the way they're going to play," Anderson said
last night.

"Stacey is the only ball player they've got, so I don't think they're
going to try and go around us too much."

Irony of golden victory not lost on Bennett

Steve Ricketts

BRISBANE coach Wayne Bennett remains a critic of the golden point
rule but he got perhaps the biggest adrenalin rush of anyone at
Olympic Park yesterday as unfashionable winger Scott Minto proved the
Broncos' extra-time match-winner against Melbourne.

Bennett, who took the unusual step for him of moving from the
grandstand to the sideline at halftime, rode Minto home from his
place on the reserves bench as the winger raced 40m to score in the
corner and give Brisbane a 26-22 win after the scores were locked at
22-22 after 80 minutes.

So unprepared for extra time was Bennett he did not know how many
interchanges he was allowed and in the mayhem of post-match
celebrations asked centre Mick De Vere if he had landed the
conversion not realising the game ends immediately one team has
scored.

"I love the golden point rule," Bennett said, tongue firmly in
cheek. "I'm happy now that we walk away with a win, but after gutsing
it out to make it 22-22 all we still would have walked away with
nothing.

"It's always been my argument, what's wrong with a draw? And today we
would have been very happy with a draw."

Just rewards for Sing

By ADAM GARDINI

SEASONED campaigners Matt Sing and Paul Rauhihi yesterday capped a
brilliant year when the Cowboys duo earned Test jerseys for their
respective nations when Australia take on New Zealand in a one-off
Test match at Aussie Stadium on Friday night.

Sing's inclusion in the Australian Test side completed a remarkable
return to the pinnacle of rugby league after the 28-year-old had
conceded he would not play representative football again following
several years away from the representative scene.

"I'm pretty shocked, I didn't even think I'd get in," an upbeat Sing
enthused after hearing of his selection courtesy of a phone call from
Cowboys football manager Peter Parr last night.

"My phone hasn't stopped ringing, everyone's been phoning.

"I just can't believe it. I didn't even think I'd get in to State-of-
Origin again.

"I'm just glad I got to play Origin and it probably helped, that last
game (in which he bagged three tries for the Maroons), to get into
the Australian side."

Sing played four Tests for Australia between 1995 and 1999 but had
been overlooked to wear the green and gold over the past three
seasons.

He is believed to be only the second Cowboys player to represent
Australia after former Cowboys hooker Steve Walters did so during the
1990s.

Rauhihi was rewarded for what has been arguably his best season in
the NRL this year with selection as one of New Zealand's starting
props, pushing Warriors No .1 go-forward man Jerry SeuSeu onto the
bench.

The 30-year-old flew to Sydney yesterday to join the New Zealand camp
after the good news was broken to him by the Kiwi team manager
yesterday morning.

SEARCH BEGINS FOR WIGAN COACH

By Ian Laybourn.

Wigan will scour the world market for a new coach - but may find him
on their own doorstep.

The Warriors will go for a high-profile name to replace Australian
Stuart Raper when he returns home at the end of the season.

Chairman Maurice Lindsay, who flew to Australia at the weekend to
attend Friday's Test match against New Zealand and next Sunday's
International Federation meeting, is expected to meet a host of
potential candidates during his visit.

Australia's national coach Chris Anderson is among the names being
linked with the JJB Stadium vacancy, along with former Manly coach
Peter Sharp and ex-Wigan centre Andrew Farrar, who was formerly in
joint charge of St George Illawarra.

Bradford 40 defeated Widnes 8

Bradford Bulls shook off their Odsal blues to consolidate second spot
in the Super League with a comprehensive 40-8 win over Widnes.

The Bulls faced the unwelcome prospect of a fourth successive home
defeat when Widnes resisted strong early pressure to grab the lead
against the run of play after 12 minutes.

Adam Hughes pounced to touch down as Bradford winger Tevita Vaikona
fumbled a kick to the line from Dean Lawford whose half-back partner
Jules O'Neill added the goal.

Bradford continued to dominate the game territorially with both Scott
Naylor and Jamie Peacock being held inches short of the Widnes line
while James Lowes crossed but was unable to ground the ball.

After 25 minutes however Bradford drew level with Shontayne Hape
stretching out to score despite the attention of three defenders and
Paul Deacon added a fine goal to equalise.

Hull FC 38 defeated Warrington 14

Graham Horne and Colin Best grabbed two tries apiece as Hull put
Warrington to the sword with a 38-14 win at the Kingston
Communications Stadium.

The home side took the lead through the first of Paul Cooke's seven
goals but Wolves bit back to take an 8-2 lead thanks to Rob Smyth's
goal and a goal and try from Graham Appo.

Appo's goal attempt was unsuccessful in the 26th minute, sparking
Hull's fightback and two tries from Best and one from Horne saw them
move 20-8 ahead before Appo was sin-binned shortly into the second
half.

Further tries from Richard Fletcher, Horne and Sean Ryan saw Hull
maintain their challenge for a top-four place with only a try from
Brent Grose reducing the deficit for Wolves.

North Beach overpower Fremantle Roosters

The Fremantle Roosters rugby league club hosted league leaders North
Beach last Saturday in the match of the round of the Swan Brewery Cup.

For thirty minutes the Roosters showed signs that they could well be
grand final contenders but then a dream start turned to a nightmare
for the rest of the game.

Fremantle ambushed the Sea Eagles to lead 18 - 8 ten minutes before
halftime through try's to Willmont, Knibbs, Stollery and Allingham
and if not for some wayward goal kicking could have had the game won.

North Beach who are regarded as the most damaging team in the
competition for pouncing on mistakes did just that, scoring two try's
in seven minutes to draw level 18-all at halftime.

The second half was a complete disaster as the Roosters game plan
unravelled, with mistakes being compounded by poor defence and a
massive 12 - 4 penalty count against them which allowed North Beach
to run in seven try's and trounce the Roosters 54 - 22.

Captain Jason Edmunds admitted that the last ten minutes of the first
half was the turning point, but was still at a loss as to explain his
teams poor second half performance.

The Roosters take on the Eastern Bulldogs at home this Saturday at
Ken Allen Field and will need to regroup if they are to get back into
the winning swing.

The Roosters reserves put up a brave fight against the Sea Eagles
going down 22 - 16 in a hard fought game which wasn't decided until
the last five minutes and the U/18's suffered a setback beaten 40-24
to round off a disappointing weekend for the club.

In other A grade results South Perth defeated Rockingham 66-nil and
the Eastern Bulldogs beat Joondalup.

Talau the surprise in Kiwis team

Bulldogs standoff Willie Talau was the bolter in the Kiwis team for
the rugby league test against the Kangaroos in Sydney on Friday
night.

Talau sealed the troublesome No 6 berth in coach Daniel Anderson's
team named today, despite spending time in reserve grade for his
National Rugby League (NRL) club in recent weeks.

Talau's clubmates, Matt Utai and Nigel Vagana, were also named, while
Anderson's New Zealand Warriors contribute eight players including
the entire bench.

Canberra Raiders prop Ruben Wiki was named captain.

Anderson included Warriors Francis Meli and Ali Lauiti'iti, but both
face anxious waits tomorrow as the NRL judiciary decides whether they
face charges for incidents during last night's match against
Cronulla.

English-based players were unavailable, while Bradford kingpin Robbie
Paul was out anyway with a broken arm.

Kiwis: David Vaealiki (Parramatta), Matt Utai (Bulldogs), Nigel
Vagana (Bulldogs), Clinton Toopi (NZ Warriors), Francis Meli
(Warriors), Willie Talau (Bulldogs), Stacey Jones (Warriors), Paul
Rauhihi (North Queensland), Richard Swain (Brisbane), Ruben Wiki
(Canberra, captain), Stephen Kearney (Melbourne), Tony Puletua
(Penrith), Awen Guttenbeil (Warriors).

Interchange: Monty Betham (Warriors), Jerry SeuSeu (Warriors), Logan
Swann (Warriors), Ali Lauiti'iti (Warriors).

Dragons condemn Cowboys

by: Dan Koch
The Cowboys hopes of a finals appearance are as good as over, with
Graham Murrays men crushed by the Dragons 36-16 at Dairy Farmers
Stadium.

Despite being without gun trio Trent Barrett, Jason Ryles and Lance
Thompson, who are all out with long-term injuries, the young Dragons
unit simply overwhelmed the home side with its up-and-in defence and
blistering backline.

Scores were level at 6-all late into the first half with impressive
young utility Dean Young crossing for the Dragons after 11 minutes
before Kangaroo aspirant Matt Sing answered for the Cowboys eight
minutes later.

But tries to dynamic centre Mark Gasnier and fullback Ben Hornby in
the five minutes before half-time gave the visitors the momentum
leading into the second forty minutes a momentum they never
surrendered.

North Queensland captain Paul Bowman burrowed across the line against
the run of play in the 55th minute to get the margin back to 16-10,
but when the Dragons lifted, the Cowboys simply had no answers.

A quick reply via Gasniers second four-pointer got Nathan Browns men
back on the offensive as forwards Chris Leikvoll, Mark Riddell and
Luke Bailey dominated the ruck area.

Halfback Brett Firman was in total control, calmly pinning the
Cowboys in their own territory and directing his side with the poise
of a player far beyond his rookie status.

Firman played a hand in tries to Leikvoll and backrower Brent Kite
and with Riddell able to slot both conversions the scoreline
ballooned out to 36-10.

A late Matt Bowen try, converted by the hard-working Glenn Morrison,
added some respectability to the scoreboard, but it was a
disappointing performance by the home side who were playing for their
survival beyond the home-and-away season.

Conversely, the undermanned Dragons were breathtaking and the solid
win sees them leapfrog the Knights into eighth position on the
competition ladder due to their far superior for-and-against record.

Eels withstand Rabbitohs fightback

Parramatta has withstood a second half South Sydney fightback on its
way to a 34-20 win over the Rabbitohs in their National Rugby League
game at Aussie Stadium.

The Eels led 28-4 at halftime and extended that lead to 34-4 eight
minutes into the second half when Jamie Lyon raced 40 metres to score.

But Souths scored the next three tries, through Owen Craigie, Lee
Hookey and Luke MacDougall, to narrow the gap to 34-20, with 15
minutes to play.

That was the end of the Souths revival, with the Eels holding on to
keep their slim hopes of a finals appearance alive.

Parramatta halfback Michael Witt finished with a personal haul of 18
points after scoring two tries and kicking five goals.

Trans-Tasman Test teams

NATIONAL coach Chris Anderson admitted some spirited debate took
place in the selection room before the Australian squad was named for
Friday night's rugby league Test against New Zealand.

National selectors today named three debutants - Anthony Minichiello,
Luke Bailey and Luke Ricketson, who at 30 finally gets his chance in
the green and gold - in the 17-man squad to face the Kiwis at Aussie
Stadium.

There are only seven survivors from the side which beat New Zealand
in Wellington in October, although Scott Hill, Trent Barrett and
Craig Fitzgibbon were not considered due to injury.

The side contains seven Queenslanders and nine New South Welshmen,
with the surprise omissions Newcastle pair Matthew Gidley and Timana
Tahu.

Both were part of the Blues' series-winning side, but Brent Tate was
preferred in the centres and Matt Sing and Anthony Minichiello on the
wings.

The hotly debated five eighth spot in captain Andrew Johns' team is
filled by NSW No.6 Shaun Timmins.

Veteran South Sydney second-rower Bryan Fletcher got a bench spot,
with incumbent second-rower Ben Kennedy serving a suspension.

"It was a spirited thing, not along state lines, on positions,"
Anderson said of the selection meeting.

"It was good. It's always a good process I think and we came out with
a good side."

Anderson and ARL chairman Colin Love confirmed the latter was not
needed to make a casting vote to break a selection deadlock.

Anderson said five-eighth, the centres and the wing were the most
contentious positions and confirmed Queensland's 36-6 win in Origin
III had a bearing on the final make-up of the squad.

"I think Sing played well in all three games," Anderson said.

"He had a strong series, as did Tate. They were probably a bit flat
in game two.

"I think in the first game they played fairly well."

Ricketson, who made his first grade debut as an 18-year-old in 1991
and played his first game for NSW in 1999, was named at lock after a
strong series for the Blues.

"He's a bloke that you appreciate playing with," Anderson said.

"He does a lot of work in the game. He'll certainly have a lot of
work to do in this game. (He'll be) topping the tackle count."

Anderson admitted he was surprised by New Zealand's decision to name
Bulldogs centre Willie Talau at five-eighth, but said the Australian
selectors hadn't taken that into consideration when they selected
Shaun Timmins at No.6.

The 27-year-old Talau only made his return last night in Premier
League from a knee injury and is normally a centre with the 'Dogs.

"I'm surprised he's in the side at five-eighth," Anderson said.

"That probably says a lot about the way they're going to play. It
will be a tough Test match. Stacey (Jones) is the only ball player
they have got.

"I don't think they're going to go around us a lot."

Roosters thrash Manly at home

The Sydney Roosters broke their Brookvale Oval hoodoo with a
comprehensive 50-26 victory over Manly.

The defending premiers secured their first win at this ground since
1995, scoring four tries in a 15-minute burst in the second half
after trailing 18-16 at halftime.

Sydney is now outright fourth on the National Rugby League table
while Manly, with a horror draw going into the finals, has lost its
fourth straight match.

Skipper Brad Fittler was outstanding for the Roosters, scoring a
second half try and superbly orchestrating his side which had five
players backing up from Wednesday's Origin clash.

Halfback Craig Wing and winger Chris Walker both bagged a brace of
tries for the visitors, who lacked ball control in the opening half.

Chad Robinson (47th minute), Ryan Cross (51m), Fittler (56m) and Wing
(62m) posted tries after the break to put the visitors in front 40-18
and in the blink of an eye the Sea Eagles were gone.

Manly pair Mitch Creary and Kevin McGuinness were put on report for a
spear tackle on Todd Byrne in the 78th minute.

COACHING EXTRACT FROM RLCM BOOK

The Physchology of Winning with Wayne Goldsmith which appeared in
RLCM Book 29

.................the coach demonstrates the skill, discusses the aim
of the activity, asks for questions, demonstrates again
and then steps back to allow the players to try the
activity.

As with the paper plane, the coach observes a range
of behaviours from his players as they try the drill
several times.

Player one performs the drill correctly.

Player two also performs the drill correctly but adds
an element of speed into the activity to test their skill
level when moving faster.

Player three also performs the drill correctly. He also
tries to perform the drill at speed but adds an additional
element by starting the drill with a step off his left leg
the first time, then starting with his right leg the next
time to learn to step off either leg with equal skill.

This is the challenge for coaches. There is nothing
wrong with what Player one did. He followed the
instructions of the coach and performed the activity
as required. However, Player two and Player three
challenged themselves to perform the task to a higher
standard than what was required.

For some reason they were MOTIVATED to perform
a simple task given to them by their coach to the best
of their ability. They decided to set a more challenging
goal and then worked to achieve it.

Player one was involved in the activity. Players two
and three were committed to the activity. They
approached a relatively simple task with the
commitment to do it well.

How do coaches turn this INVOLVEMENT into COMMITMENT?

Much of the success of these motivated players comes
from their ability to set challenging goals and to
manage the process of achieving their goals.

The great news is that goal setting and goal
management is a simple concept for players to learn
because that is the way we all work every day in
everything we do.

For example. Goal I want a cup of tea.

Solution I will make one.

Goal: I would like to earn some money.

Solution I will apply for a job.

Our brains work in terms of setting goals and achieving
them. Goal setting is a very natural process and
humans are by nature very goal orientated.

In high performance sport, the challenge for coaches
and players is to set high performance goals and to
achieve them through high performance practices and
attitudes.

It has been said that the key to success is to develop
the will to win. However, the will to win is not
worth anything without the daily commitment to do
what it takes to prepare to win.

It is common for players to want to win but how many support
this
desire to win with focus and concentration and determination in
everything they do?

Parramatta 34 defeated Souths 20

Written by: Steven Williams

The Parramatta Eels have put on early points to out-gun the South
Rabbitohs by 34-20 at Aussie Stadium this afternoon.

Leading 22-0 after just 17 minutes, the Eels looked to have the match
wrapped up with five eighth Michael Witt scoring a double.

Jamie Lyon scored to extend the Parramatta lead before Lee Hookey
regathered an Owen Craigie grubber to get Souths on the board and at
half time it was 28-4.

Parramatta struck first in the second half with another try to Jamie
Lyon. But with possession evening up, Souths put on some enterprising
play and with 15 minutes to go, the scoreline saw Parramatta leading
by 34-20.

The comeback however was stalled and with the clock ticking down, the
Eels did enough to come away with the two points.

Wally Lewis wants Timmins in Test

20jul03
AUSTRALIA must use Shaun Timmins to fill the troublesome five-eighth
role to counter the monstrous New Zealand forward pack in Friday
night's Test.

That is the opinion of Australia's greatest five-eighth of the modern
era, Wally Lewis, who believes Timmins has the size and defensive
capabilities to repel Kiwi giants such as in-form Penrith duo Tony
Puletua and Joe Galuvao.

"The way the selectors will probably look at it is we are going to
see a massive Kiwi forward pack just aiming all day at the edge of
the ruck," Lewis said.

"If they have any brains, they are going to target Johns and the five-
eighth.

"That makes me think Timmins may get the nod, because he has more
size and has been defensively sound all through the Origin series.

"If we were playing the Poms, maybe they would go with one of the
smaller blokes.

"But against the Kiwis, it is a smarter move to go with somebody with
a bit of size."

Footy fatigue can even bow genius

JAMES HOOPER

TOO much football is never enough except when it starts to affect
Andrew Johns.

Johns is the genius of his generation but his brain appeared to be
suffering information overload as he witnessed the Knights being
overwhelmed 29-16 by the Panthers on Friday night.

You can't blame the bloke.

Six weeks of Origin football.

Several big club games wedged in between.

The flu.

Is it any wonder Johns was up and down like a yo-yo against the
Panthers.

There were the typical freakish touches, cut-out passes to set up
tries, bone-jarring one-on-one defence, 40-20 kicks.

But then there were the uncharacteristic and irrational mistakes.

The clanger came just before half-time when the Newcastle captain
went for a short kick-off after the Panthers had scored.

It failed to go 10m, giving the Panthers possession and ultimately an
eight-point turnaround leading into the break.

The loud message being telegraphed from the Johns kick was that we
are asking our representative stars to play too much football.

Newcastle coach Michael Hagan was curt when asked about his captain's
decision to go for the short kick.

"I think he was exhausted give some more thought to why that was,"
Hagan said.

It wasn't just the short kick or a couple of dropped balls that
suggested Johns was exhausted.

His NSW Origin teammate Timana Tahu was also showing clear signals of
mental fatigue.

Here's an indication about the type of things going on inside the
head of the man they call "T".

On Friday morning he rang Hagan to rule himself out of the match
against the Panthers with a sprained ankle.

Half a dozen phone calls and some physiotherapy later and Tahu was
back in the team.

By the end of the night he had scored three tries and been denied a
fourth that could have swung the game back to the Knights.

For all the skill and speed he showed to score those tries Tahu also
made some errors that led to opposing winger Luke Rooney scoring two
tries.

Golden Broncos overcome Storm

A "Golden Point" try to winger Scott Minto has handed the Broncos a
remarkable 26-22 extra-time victory over the Melbourne Storm at
Olympic Park.

With 10 players backing up from Origin, Brisbane always faced an
uphill battle at a venue where they have managed just one win from
four visits. And with playmakers Darren Lockyer, Casey McGuire and
Ben Ikin all forced from the field with injuries there appeared
little chance for the visitors.

But Lockyer's Lazarus-like comeback with 10 minutes to play sparked a
Broncos team trailing the committed Melbourne side 18-22.

A splendid long ball from Lockyer to flying winger Stu Kelly set-up
up the equalising four-pointer, which Michael De Vere was unable to
convert.

Both sides threatened in the dying minutes, but when the full-time
siren sounded the scores were locked at 22-all.

Melbourne halfback Matt Orford had the first chance to win the game
in the extra period, missing an easy drop goal attempt from directly
in front after the sensational Billy Slater had put the Storm in a
perfect position.

A blockbusting run by Broncos captain Gorden Tallis put his side on
the front foot, before fellow backrower Corey Parker managed a one-
handed offload to Minto, who beat the desperate cover defence to
score out wide.

The try sparked Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett into a rare display of
emotion on the sideline, highlighting the enormity of his sides
effort.

Melbourne had started the game in sensational fashion with Slater
crossing in the first minute, simply running around the Brisbane
defence from a scrum to score out wide.

Winger Marcus Bai extended the lead to eight points when he crashed
over in the corner after a Matt Geyer intercept had left the Brisbane
defence in tatters.

Brisbane finally got on the board with a converted try to centre
Michael De Vere in the 23rd minute. But a late try to Ryan Hoffman
and a penalty goal to Orford meant the home side held a comfortable
16-6 lead at the break.

After a lacklustre performance in the opening forty minutes, the
visitors came out with renewed enthusiasm and tries to Brent Tate in
the 47th minute and McGuire 10 minutes later had Brisbane in front
and in control up 18-16.

But after losing Ikin (corked thigh) in the first half, the Broncos
were thrown into disarray when McGuire (shoulder) and Lockyer (ankle)
left the field.

A freakish try to Fifita Moala in the 64th minute and Orfords
sideline conversion put the home side in front and in a powerful
position against the tiring Brisbane side, but as they have done so
many times in the past, Wayne Bennetts men refused to throw in the
towel.

The win completes an impressive Origin campaign for the Broncos, who
have struggled badly in the past few seasons with so many players out
and\or backing-up from state duty.

Wins over the Raiders, Roosters and now the Storm have cemented
Brisbane within the top four and with only one Test match remaining
in the representative season, a home final is now within their grasp.

For the home side, captain Robbie Kearns was inspirational, while
Orford and Slater were dangerous.

But it was the work of Melbourne in defence which would have most
pleased coach Craig Bellamy and if they are able to replicate such
efforts in future weeks, a finals berth is assured.

Brisbane were well served by Origin big men Gorden Tallis, Petero
Civinoceva, Shane Webcke and Dane Carlaw, with Corey Parker also
turning in a big effort.

But it was Lockyer who was again the difference, the champion
custodian solidifying his place as one of the true greats of the game.

Melbourne Storm 22

Broncos overcome Storm in extra time thriller

Written by: Matt Starkey

Brisbane have walked away from Melbournes Olympic park with two
points after outlasting the Storm and winning 26-22 in extra time.

The match was a very entertaining affair, with both sides scoring
great tries and kicking some sharp goals. In the end, it was probably
Matt Orford's boot that cost the Storm the game when he missed two
conversions he probably should have kicked and a field goal in the
82nd minute which would have secured the victory for the Storm. But
you just can't deny this Brisbane team who stick it out to the end
and today their persistence paid off with a hard fought victory.

The Storm took and early 8-nil lead with tries to Slater and Bai.
Slaters was particularly eye-catching, making a fools of De Vere and
Minto from a scrum when he clapped on the pace and left both
defenders clasping at air.

But it wasn't long before De Vere put them back in the game by
backing up and scoring under the posts to make it 8-6. The Storm then
hit back just before half time through Hoffman with Orford landing
the goal and another penalty to take the lead to 16-6 before heading
into the sheds.

In the second half we saw the Broncos really come back into the
contest displaying the composure they were lacking in the first
stanza and putting on tries to Tate and MacGuire to open up an 18-16
lead.

The Storm hit back through an unusual try to Fifita Moala which saw
the pigskin lost backwards and batted around like a beach ball before
finding Moala who took everyone by surprise and darted over the line.

At that point there was 19 minutes to go and the Storm were up by 4
points.

Stuart Kelly then booked himself a four-pointer in the 76th minute
but the conversion from De Vere out wide was missed and we had a few
minutes remaining which were played out at break-neck pace to no
avail.

The opening exchanges of extra time saw Melbourne claw into
Brisbanes territory with some damaging runs. With everyone knowing
what to expect, Melbourne positioned themselves for a field goal and
Matt Orford pushed it wide. Whilst the lead-up work was great, Orford
was standing very deep and appeared to rush the drop punt with the
result costing the Storm the game.

From the ensuing set of six, Brisbane muscled up and could smell
victory. Minto made a break and ran about 50 metres to score out wide
despite attention from Slater and Bai, who had come from the other
side of the field to jockey with the tall winger.

And the finishing move from Minto left a few guessing, including
myself, as to what he was doing.

After beating Bai the Brisbane flanker jumped in the air about 2
metres from the line as Slater was coming across.

It looked even funnier on replay, but laughter aside, Minto sealed
the victory for the Broncos and snapped a 3-game losing streak
brought on by the heavy representative workload.

Roosters 50 defeated Manly 26

Written by: Ali Nolan

Fourteen tries and the highest scoring game so far in the 2003 NRL
competition, and the Roosters came out on top of the Sea Eagles by 50-
26.

With the Sea Eagles putting on a fine performance both defensively
and on attack, they were deserved leaders at half time by 18-16.

The second half brought a drastic turn around with the patience of
the Roosters showing through, leaving the Manly side scoreless in the
second half until halfway through, and piling on the points in the
process.

A great performance by Brad Fittler in his 400th senior game helped
him steer his side to put on 50 points against a side who's defence
was very solid at times, but as mentioned, patience prevails.

points, beating Yeronga 54-0. Browns Plains stay in second place, on
28, with a 72-6 win over Edens Landing. Waterford is in clear third
place, on 26, after having the bye. With one match to go, fourth
place, on 20 points, is shared by Capalaba, who beat Southern Cross
on a forfeit, and Logan Brothers, who beat Mustangs 34-18. These two
teams play next week at Civic Park at 1.30 PM in a match which will
decide fourth place.

In the Albert Bishop Shield, Norths and Logan Brothers had already
played their match as the Ted Beaumont Trophy. Norths stay in the
lead on 31 points. Rochedale had the bye to stay in second place on
27 points, while Valleys Juniors moved into third place, on 24, after
beating Capalaba 36-0. Logan Brothers are now in fourth place on 23
points, with Redlands in fifth place, on 21, after beating Carina 44-
14.

Sunnybank stay on top in the Arthur Sparks Shield, on 28 points,
after a 28-4 win over Valleys Juniors. Springwood stays in second
place, on 21, with a narrow 20-19 win over Logan Brothers. Albany
Creek moved into third place, on 19, beating Wynnum Juniors 42-16,
while Logan Brothers drop to fourth place, on 18. Wynnum are now in
fifth place on 16 points.

John the builder back on the prowl

MICHAEL WESTLAKE

PENRITH coach John Lang is a firm believer in "band-aid" solutions.

The former Queensland hooker has become the "Bob the Builder" of the
NRL the coach clubs turn to when they need fixing.

His feat in having the once-battling Panthers as clear competition
leaders after 19 rounds of the premiership, having similarly rebuilt
Cronulla in his eight season tenure, proves that, yes, he can.

Lang is not alone as a repairman this season, with a number of clubs
turning to Queenslanders in a bid to turn their fortunes around.

Canberra has Matt Elliott, the Storm are back in business with the
arrival of "adopted" Queenslander Craig Bellamy while, ironically,
North Queensland have turned to New South Welshman Graham Murray.

Heading into this weekend, counting Bellamy as a de-facto Maroon
because he learned his trade at the Broncos, five Queenslanders were
at the helm of teams in the NRL top eight.

But it is the emergence of former cellar-dwellers as competitive
premiership forces that has attracted the most attention most
notably Penrith, which just two seasons ago were in disarray as NRL
wooden spooner.

Lang said he did not have the patience for "long-term plans" when
trying to rebuild the Sharks and Panthers.

"People have said to me, when we weren't going so well, are you
planning for the long term?" Lang said.

"Well we were but the whole idea is to be No. 1 as quickly as we can.

Castleford 32 defeated Wakefield 4

STEADMAN HAPPY WITH DEFENCE

Castleford coach Graham Steadman was impressed by his side's defence
as they crushed Wakefield 32-4 in a one-sided Tetley's Super League
clash at Belle Vue.

Steadman watched his side dominate their neighbours and was most
pleased with the way his defence stood up to the test.

"We knew we had to front up in defence and we did," said Steadman.

But the Castleford coach was not pleased with the number of penalties
awarded in the match and admitted he would be looking into that side
of the game before his side's next encounter with Bradford Bulls.

"It was a very scrappy game. The penalties were very frustrating,"
admitted Steadman.

"I'll have to get some clarification on some of the rules for next
week because if the penalties go against us like that against
Bradford then there's only going to be one result - victory for
Bradford."

Despite his concern over the penalty count against his side Steadman
was happy with his players.

"Overall I'm really pleased with the defensive effort. And another
plus is that there is still a lot of improvement in our ranks."

RAPER TO LEAVE WARRIORS

By Ian Laybourne.

Wigan have confirmed that coach Stuart Raper will leave the club at
the end of the season with 12 months left on his contract.

The Warriors ended months of speculation over Raper's future by
announcing he is to return home to Australia with his family, thus
ending a seven-year stint in Super League which began with Castleford
in 1997.

"Stuart came to see me and explained that it might be the right time
to return home, particularly for his family," said chairman Maurice
Lindsay.

"He will be hard to replace as I have never met a harder-working
coach. He has been very good to work with.

"He certainly goes with my best wishes and will be an asset to
another club, which I am sure will be a top Australian club."

Raper, who has been linked with a return to his former club Cronulla,
succeeded Frank Endacott at Wigan in May 2001, when he signed a three-
and-a-half-year contract.

Kearns signs two-year Storm deal

Melbourne boss John Ribot said he was "over the moon" after re-
signing NSW Origin prop Robbie Kearns to a two-year contract.

As part of the deal, Kearns will be appointed to an ambassador role
within the National Rugby League club once he retires.

"We looked at a package for him for life after football," Ribot said.

"From a league point of view we want an ambassador for our game down
here and someone who can get involved in future development."

Kearns' administrative post is important for the Storm, who are
flying the flag for the game in AFL heartland.

This year they are averaging crowds of 9,717 at their home ground
Olympic Park, with only Manly, Souths and Wests Tigers faring worse.

"We're over the moon, absolutely elated," said Ribot about the
signing of Kearns, who will be nearly 33-years-old when his contract
expires at the end of 2005.

"He's just got so much to offer not only on the field but off the
field.

"He's just so important for us and he's not a player that likes
jumping clubs."

Kearns rejected offers from the Wests Tigers and Cronulla to stick
with the Storm but he revealed negotiations were not without
problems.

"My manager George Mimis put a proposal to the club eight weeks ago
and it took them a long time to get back to me," Kearns told radio
station 2SM.

Warriors 31 defeated Cronulla 24

Jones kicks Warriors home

New Zealand Warriors halfback Stacey Jones kicked another high-
pressure field goal that enabled his side to sneak home 31-24 against
Cronulla in Saturday night's National Rugby League clash at Toyota
Park.

Jones booted the field goal late last month in extra time to down
South Sydney 31-30 in round 16 and was the go-to man again, slotting
home a 77th minute drop goal under enormous pressure to give the
Warriors a 25-24 lead.

Sharks halfback Brett Kimmorley, in his comeback match following a
month's stint on the sideline with a broken jaw, attempted a late
field goal but it fell well short.

Warriors winger Justin Murphy then caught Kimmorley's attempt and ran
90m to seal Cronulla's fate and bury their finals hopes for good.

Referee Shayne Hayne put Warriors forward Ali Lauiti'iti on report
for two separate incidents - high shots on David Peachey and Paul
Gallen - that could jeopardise his chances of playing for New Zealand
against Australia in Friday night's Test.

Francis Meli was also placed on report for a 50th minute high tackle
on Danny Nutley, who was booked himself for a high shot on Warriors
skipper Monty Betham.

The sides were locked at 12-all after the opening 30 minutes, with
Matthew Rieck and David Peachey scoring for the home side and Richard
Villasanti and Clinton Toopi touching down for the Warriors.

Sharks forward Sam Isemonger put his team in front three minutes
before halftime when he was on the spot to dive on a Kimmorley bomb
into the in-goal area that Warriors fullback Brent Webb elected to
let bounce.

Canberra 28 defeated Tigers 26

Wests Tigers fume over ref's call

Only the threat of a $10,000 fine prevented Wests Tigers' coach Tim
Sheens attacking referee Steve Lyons after his team lost 28-26 to
Canberra.

Sheen's blood was boiling at Canberra Stadium from the circumstances
that cost the Tigers a last minute win.

With ten seconds left on the clock, prop Corey Pearson slipped a ball
to Trent Clayton and the Tigers were celebrating a try even before he
slid across the line.

Ecstasy turned to despair when the Tigers turned to see Lyons ruling
a forward pass, giving the Raiders a dramatic escape.

The Tigers had three tries disallowed by the video referee, including
a highly contentious denied try to replacement Anthony Laffranchi.

"If I had $10,000 to spend, and the club hasn't got it, I'd spend it
right now," Sheens said.

"We can't whinge about it, but for our franchise, supporters and
sponsors, and our own self-esteem, it's disappointing to see a great
effort ruined by a number of things.

"I thought their last try was a marginal forward pass, and our last
try, or no try, went against us, so we lost on both instances.

"Everyone's a little disappointed, but we've just got to put it down
to experience and not let it effect us."

It was a courageous display from the Tigers after a disastrous
opening 10 minute period saw them trailing 16-0.

Dragons 36 defeated Cowboys 16

Dragons ride Cowboys into the eight

St George Illawarra charged into the top eight with 36-16 win over
the North Queensland Cowboys in their NRL game at Dairy Stadium
Stadium.

The Dragons first win in Queensland since the merger between St
George and Illawarra all but ended North Queensland's finals hopes,
and was built on a two-try burst just before halftime.

After a tight first half and with the teams locked at six-all, St
George lock Michael Howell intercepted a Kevin Campion pass in his
quarter.

The lock did not have the speed to race the length of the field but
found centre Mark Gasnier who took the ball 75m to score.

Mark Riddell's conversion made it 12-6 with two minutes left before
the break but the Dragons were not finished scoring for the first
half.

They went the length of the field with Ben Hornby running off a Brett
Firman pass to score just before the siren.

Riddell's conversion gave them a handy 18-6 halftime lead which was
extended four minutes into the second half by a penalty goal again
from Riddell.

ANGRY ANDERSON LAMBASTS HALIFAX PLAYERS

Coach Tony Anderson blasted his Halifax side after seeing them set a
new unwanted Super League record.

Asked if there were any positives to take from the game, Anderson
replied: "We are the best team in the league at kicking off. But
that's about it."

The nine-try mauling by Leeds was Halifax's 18th defeat in a row,
beating Huddersfield's existing record.

It leaves the strugglers rock-bottom of Super League with no points
after their appeal earlier this week against a two-point deduction
for breaking the salary cap was turned down.

Anderton was left fuming by his side's poor display and
said: "Professional pride should make players go out there and give
it a go. Some of our players didn't show that pride and let both me
and themselves down.

"People have been backing them for a long time, including myself, but
tonight they let everyone down.

"This is the lowest I have felt in my life - not just during this
season. It looked like some of my side have given up.

"Every part of our game was poor. Defensively, we were poor and we
didn't stick to the game-plan. They let themselves down in every area.

"You work hard all week working on plans but then players don't want
to go and carry it out."

Clubs agree to move Challenge Cup final

Super League clubs put themselves on a collision course with their
backers by agreeing to move the Powergen Challenge Cup final to later
in the season.

BSkyB, whose current Super League contract runs out at the end of the
season, are thought to have offered £55.5million for a new
five-year
deal that includes the rights to Super League and international rugby
league.

But Sky have also made it a condition of their offer that the
Challenge Cup final, which is not part of their portfolio, continues
to be played in the early part of the season, well away from the
Super League Grand Final.

The BBC, who are thought to have offered £22m for a package that
includes both the Challenge Cup and internationals, want the final
moved and the 12 Super League clubs agreed.

The club representatives, who believe the switch to summer has
effectively made the Challenge Cup a pre-season competition, voted in
principle to move the final to either late August or early September
from 2005.

Next year's final, which forms part of the current deal, has already
been fixed for May 15.

A Rugby Football League spokesman said: "The clubs explored the
situation and agreed that it was a feasible move."

Murray bats for Sing

By Dean Ritchie

NORTH Queensland coach Graham Murray said last night cold hard
statistics should ensure Matt Sing is the first winger chosen for
Australia's Test against New Zealand next Friday.

Sing scored three tries in Queensland's stunning 36-6 win over NSW on
Wednesday and ran for 156 metres.

Murray pointed out that Sing had now gained 436 metres over the three
matches -- numbers which should push Sing into the Kangaroo side.

"He has been in outstanding form at club level and has now taken that
form in the State of Origin," said Murray, who coaches Sing at the
Cowboys.

"Matt has given himself every chance to win Australian selection. And
he should be chosen.

"It's not often a winger receives man of the match accolades. And he
should have been man of the match. Matt scored three, set up another
and he was a handful each time he touched the ball."

The Australian selectors were judges of the man of the match --
another factor in Sing's favour. Sing has played 18 Origin matches
for Queensland and played the last of his four Tests in 1999.

Sing will line up against St George Illawarra tonight in Townsville.

The game will mark North Queensland's 100th premiership appearance at
Dairy Farmers Stadium. Since entering the competition in 1995, the
Cowboys have drawn more than 1.6million people to the Townsville
venue and boast an overall crowd average of 16,363 per game.

They have won 31 of their 99 home games but among three home wins
against the Dragons is the club's record 50-4 victory in 2000.

Penrith overtake for yellow jersey

By Steve Mascord and Brad Walter

Newcastle 16 Penrith 29

Penrith held on to rugby league's yellow jersey last night - but
coach John Lang wouldn't declare them Kings of the Mountains just yet.

The Panthers retained the outright competition lead after 19 rounds
by overcoming a 16-4 deficit and a hat-trick from Newcastle winger
Timana Tahu to win 29-16 at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

Defeat for Newcastle meant a serious dint in their hopes for a top-
four finish and a home final, and left coach Michael Hagan in a terse
mood.

Speaking after his side's 13th win in 14 games, Panthers chief
executive Shane Richardson said: "Langy said to me this week: 'We've
got the yellow jersey on but there's a pile of Lance Armstrongs
behind us'."

A satisfied but far-from-enraptured Lang said he still believed a
full-strength Newcastle was the team to beat - but that would have
been scant consolation for Hagan, whose side may be pushed out of the
top eight tonight. "Obviously Brisbane are going to be there too, and
I think the Bulldogs have got more depth than any other club," Lang
said.

"We've nailed a spot in the finals now and we just want to play as
well as we can."

Gutsy Panthers overcome Knights

Penrith produced a defensive display worthy of top spot on the
National Rugby League ladder to secure a gutsy 29-16 win over
Newcastle at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

The Panthers scored four tries between the 38th and 52nd minutes and
then defended as if their life depended on it to cling to a 22-16
lead before a Craig Gower field goal in the 70th minute secured the
win.

Centre Paul Whatuira scored his second try with three minutes
remaining to add the icing to the cake.

Three times in the second half Penrith players turned up to save what
looked to be certain Newcastle tries.

First Joe Gulavao, who hurt his back in the 50th minute when he
copped some accidental Matt Parsons knees in the back, produced a try-
saving tackle on Kurt Gidley seven minutes after suffering the
injury.

Three minutes after that Luke Rooney, Ryan Girdler and Preston
Campbell produced some desperate defence to stop Tahu from scoring
his fourth.

Video referee Steve Clark sent the decision back to Tim Mander, who
decided the three Panthers had held up the Test winger.

Three minutes later Wesser produced more heroics, this time grassing
Kurt Gidley again centimetres short of the line after a Johns bomb
had deflected off the upright.

Clark ruled Gidley had lost the ball short of the line and the
Panthers lived to fight another day.

The Knights became increasingly frustrated and Mander warned Johns in
the second half as the tension grew.

"Don't take me on Joey, don't take me on mate," Mander said to the
NSW captain.

Newcastle led 16-12 at halftime after three Timana Tahu tries, but
the damage could have been worse for the Panthers if not for two
tries in the last three minutes of the half to Rooney and Whatuira.

The first came after some clever work from Girdler, who drifted to
the blind and sucked in two defenders to give Rooney an easy passage
to the corner.

The second came after an inexplicable decision byJohns to attempt a
short kick-off inside the final two minutes of the half.

The ball failed to go the requisite 10 metres and Penrith received a
penalty which put them on the attack on the Knights' line.

They spread it wide through Preston Campbell and Ryan Girdler before
Whatuira scored in the corner after the halftime siren to make the
lead four points at the break.

They added two more tries in the opening 12 minutes of the second
half, with Trent Waterhouse scoring off a short ball from Craig Gower
in the 43rd minute before Rooney scored his second in the 52nd
minute, leaping above Tahu to take a Girdler bomb and score.

Wesser was placed on report for a high tackle on Anthony Quinn in the
64th minute.

Penrith's defence passes the test

By Jeremy Plimmer

The Penrith Panthers travelled to Newcastle and bet the Knights 29-16
to keep their impressive season on track.

Despite some early nerves Penrith struck first with some expansive
football resulting in a try to Luke Lewis. The momentum shifted soon
after which was to be the story of the match.

The Knights hit back with Tahu running in three tries. The NSW winger
was helped along by his partner in crime Matt Gidley setting him up
with some good ball and a couple of trademark flick passes.

There will be a thank you card in Andrew Johnsmailbox in the morning
as a poor kick-off gave the Panthers great field position. What
resulted was the Panthers scoring their second try in the space of
five minutes going into halftime.

The Panthers opened up the second half with two more tries to extend
their lead out to six points. The momentum wasnt to last as they
fell into a cold patch.

Newcastle turned up the heat but the Penrith defensive line refused
to be cracked stepping up to the responsibilities that go with the
top of the table spot. They then turned things around and went down
field with Gower kicking a field goal and then Whatuira scoring to
rap up the match.

The win for Penrith sees them at the top of the table for another
week and puts them on good money to take the minor premiership.
Newcastle on the other hand could find themselves out of the top
eight by the end of the weekend and on a slippery slide down hill.

Dogs confirm centres' signings

The Bulldogs confirmed one of the worst-kept secrets in rugby league -
the signings of centres Jamaal Lolesi and Willie Tonga to two-year
deals.

The club, battling salary cap problems emanating from last year's
scandal, has been desperate to cover the impending departure of New
Zealand international centre pairing Nigel Vagana (Cronulla) and
Willie Talau (St Helens).

Ben Harris, 19, has cemented a first grade spot at the expense of
Talau, who rejected the `Dogs offers to play in England.

News that Canberra centre Lolesi would join the Bulldogs in 2004
broke at a press conference nine days ago to help promote a match
between the Raiders and St George Illawarra.

Raiders coach Matt Elliott had said he was sad to see the 22-year-old
New Zealander depart the club.

"The reality of the business side of footy at the moment is you've
only got so much cabbage to share around and unfortunately we only
had the last few leaves left for Jamaal, so he took a better
opportunity at the Bulldogs," Elliott explained.

Tonga, 19, has made only eight first grade appearances for the Eels
since making his debut against the Sydney Roosters in June last year.

His path to top grade has been blocked by NSW centre Jamie Lyon and
Kiwis international David Vaealiki.

Broncos to re-sign Origin pair

Brisbane boss Bruno Cullen is confident of signing several
uncontracted Broncos, including State Of Origin rugby league stars
Shaun Berrigan and Michael De Vere, by the end of the month.

Cullen said he was sorry injury-ridden halfback Scott Prince was
leaving the club after the 23-year-old's decision to join the Wests
Tigers, but felt the other key signings would be secured within the
next week to 10 days.

Cullen, however, admitted reports of an offer to De Vere from English
Super League club Wigan was "scary".

Prince will rejoin his first coach Tim Sheens at the Tigers next
season,

The Broncos signed him three years ago in the hope he could replace
Allan Langer in the number seven jumper.

But two broken legs and a knee injury restricted Prince's appearances
for the Broncos who now have Berrigan as their number one halfback.

Prince said the Tigers' offer was "too good to refuse".

The Tigers also had a crack at signing Berrigan but he is expected to
re-sign with the Broncos next week.

Prince said he had no regrets about his time with Brisbane, apart
from the injuries that prevented him from giving his full services to
the club.

"I jumped at coming here when I was 20," said the former North
Queensland half.

"It was a big honour to put the jersey on and play for the Broncos."

Scott Prince looking for new start

Halfback Scott Prince is confident of making the transition from
Brisbane's winning culture to the rebuilding Wests Tigers where
National Rugby League successes are fewer.

Broncos chief executive Bruno Cullen said losing Prince was
disappointing, but added he expected to confirm the signings of
several uncontracted Broncos, including State Of Origin stars Shaun
Berrigan and Michael De Vere, by the end of the month.

"It's disappointing he's going because I never accepted from the
start that we'd lose anyone," Cullen said.

"But I understand Scott's reasons and he certainly goes with the
club's best wishes."

Prince admitted the Tigers' offer was just "too good to refuse.

But the 23-year-old was quickly reminded of teammate Chris Walker's
unhappy move to another struggling Sydney club, South Sydney, who he
walked out on earlier this season.

Walker, now on a small deal with the Roosters for the rest of this
season, was widely criticised for leaving the Rabbitohs.

"Chris Walker is a different player to what I am and a different
person," Prince said.

"He (Walker) was with a very successful Broncos team and had won a
premiership, so it wasn't an easy change for him.

"I started off the with Cowboys in Townsville and we didn't win too
many games so I've been in that environment before."

Brisbane signed Mt Isa-born Prince three years ago, hoping he would
replace Allan Langer in the No.7 jumper.

But two broken legs and a knee injury restricted his appearances for
the Broncos to 24 and Shaun Berrigan is now the club's number one
halfback.

Prince's only regrets about his three seasons with Brisbane were that
injuries prevented him from giving full service to the club.

"I jumped at coming here when I was 20. It was a big honour just to
put the jersey on and play for the Broncos.

"Now I'm looking for an opportunity to get back playing consistently
in the NRL and the Tigers and (coach) Tim Sheens offer me that
challenge.
