NRL Club News from SMH - Friday
By Steve Mascord
Newcastle winger Timana Tahu is in doubt for tonight's clash with
Penrith after aggravating an ankle injury in Origin III, while
interchange forward Adam Woolnough has been ruled out.
Woolnough has a neck injury; coach Michael Hagan named four
interchange players anyway, but has added some stand-bys. With
whispers circulating that Matt Jobson is also in doubt, Todd Lowrie
and Reegan Tanner have joined the first-grade squad.
Penrith interchange forward Trent Waterhouse passed a fitness test on
his injured calf yesterday.
Ian Hindmarsh (quadriceps) is likely to withdraw from the Canberra
side to play Wests Tigers tomorrow night. Ben Cross will go back to
premier league, leaving coach Matthew Elliott with the regulation
four reserves.
Wests Tigers last night lost winger Robbie Beckett (hip) and second-
rower Ben Galea (shoulder), while prop John Skandalis (corked thigh)
is not expected to play either. Mark O'Halloran replaces Beckett,
Chris Heighington takes the place of Galea and Steve Trindall is
likely to start in place of Skandalis.
There should be a decision today on whether Cronulla skipper Brett
Kimmorley makes his return from a broken jaw against the Warriors at
Toyota Park tomorrow night. "He's training confidently," said coach
Chris Anderson.
Warriors second-rower Logan Swann will travel to Sydney today, even
though he was not named due to a knee injury. He'll undergo a fitness
test this afternoon.
St George Illawarra coach Nathan Brown has declined to name a
replacement for NSW prop Jason Ryles (shoulder) in the side to play
North Queensland at Dairy Farmers Stadium tomorrow night. Ryles and
winger Amos Roberts, who also has a shoulder injury, underwent scans
late yesterday. Results will be available this morning.
Five-eighth Shaun Timmins is also in doubt with a shoulder problem.
The game marks North Queensland's 100th premiership encounter, for 31
wins.
Melbourne winger Dustin Cooper (shoulder) is in doubt for Sunday's
match with Brisbane at Olympic Park.
There has still been no news on who will replace Brisbane lock and
Origin casualty Tonie Carroll (hamstring), although Carl Webb is
likely to join Wayne Bennett's squad.
Manly five-eighth Ben Walker is on track to make his return from a
neck injury and concussion against the Roosters at Brookvale.
Roosters skipper Brad Fittler is searching for his first win at
Brookvale since 1991.
South Sydney hooker Jason Death (concussion) has been cleared to play
against Parramatta at Aussie Stadium on Sunday. The Rabbitohs have
signed the Warriors' Dallas Rennie and extended the contract of
second-rower Luke Stuart.
Winger Wise Kativerata is believed to have signed with opponents
Parramatta for next season.

Job swap may bring Raper back to Sharks
By Steve Mascord and Brad Walter
Wigan supremo Maurice Lindsay is hardly going to have time to sleep
while in Australia next week if even half the rumours about the
purpose of his trip are true.
Top of the agenda for Lindsay is supposed to be to organise a coach
swap involving Cronulla's Chris Anderson going to Wigan and Stuart
Raper returning to the Sharks, where he did his apprenticeship in the
lower grades.
Sin Bin understands that Raper is coming home next season no matter
what, and has also heard that before last weekend's match against
lowly Wakefield, Wigan owner Dave Whelan told the players while they
were warming up on the field that "heads would roll" if they followed
the previous week's loss to Huddersfield with another defeat.
Anderson and Lindsay are good friends, the Australia coach having
stayed at Lindsay's home while recovering from the heart attack he
suffered during the third Test of the 2001 Kangaroo tour.
If Anderson agreed, the Sharks would be unlikely to oppose the move
as it would save them a potential payout of up to three seasons'
money.
Anderson's contract is believed to contain a clause entitling him to
a further two-year extension should the club make the top eight twice
during his current three-year term.
Also said to be in Lindsay's sights while here for the international
federation meeting are goalkicking Brisbane centre Michael De Vere
and Warriors back-rower Logan Swann.
POKIE PATSY: Former Test great Noel Cleal may become the first victim
of the NSW Government's new tax on poker machines with Parramatta
considering making his position of recruitment officer redundant at
the end of the season in a bid to cut costs.
JOEY CRACKING UP: Ever wonder what Andrew Johns does on his day off?
Each Wednesday the Test skipper drives from Newcastle to Gymea to
have his back cracked by Elle Macpherson's aunt Kay - an osteopath.
She is favoured by many of the game's top players after former NSW
coach Wayne Pearce introduced her to the Origin side a few years ago.
GROUND FORCE: Parramatta prop Chris Armit has a future at the club
even if he fails to recover from the knee injury that has ended his
season. Armit, who works as a trainee groundsman at Parramatta
Stadium, this week received two grants for his horticulture studies.
BARBA MAKES CUT: Penrith have signed Preston Campbell's cousin - 21-
year-old Redcliffe winger Aaron Barba, who scored 36 tries in the
Queensland Cup last year and so far this season has racked up 18.
UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS: NSW gave Brisbane's traditional post-Origin
watering hole, City Rowers, the flick on Wednesday night. The Blues
were none too impressed with being stuck in a room upstairs at the
nightclub after Origin I while Queensland partied on at a riverside
mezzanine area downstairs. The Blues moved to Fortitude Valley
establishment The GPO and liked it enough to be planning a return in
2004.
IRONIC: Sin Bin was ferried around the Gold Coast last week by a
personable cabbie who informed us he was the uncle of the Cook
Islands' most famous exports, Kevin and Tony Iro. His name? Iro Iro.

Selectors likely to Wing it
By Steve Mascord
Craig Wing playing at five-eighth is the likely compromise NSW and
Queensland selectors will reach in selecting Australia's line-up for
next Friday's Test against New Zealand.
Following the Maroons' 36-6 win in Origin III on Wednesday night,
Australian selector Arthur Beetson said he would push for Brisbane's
Shaun Berrigan to partner skipper Andrew Johns in the halves at
Aussie Stadium.
NSW selectors Bob McCarthy and Bob Fulton will lobby hard for Blues
pivot Shaun Timmins.
But it is understood the Roosters' Wing will be proffered as a
compromise - one McCarthy, Fulton, Beetson and Les Geeves are likely
to accept.
National coach Chris Anderson declined to comment on the subject but
did defuse one simmering controversy when he said it was unlikely any
players from outside the Origin series would be selected.
"I don't think it will happen, it'll all come from Origin," said
Anderson, who added that some loyalty would be shown to the incumbent
side that beat the Kiws 32-24 on October 12.
"Players that have been there for a while deserve some loyalty . . .
but the rest of it is pretty open.
"I don't think anyone is ever guaranteed a spot in the Australian
side."

Shaun a Roo-in
By PETER FRILINGOS
ST GEORGE Illawarra's makeshift State of Origin five-eighth Shaun
Timmins has firmed to get the No. 6 jumper for Australia against New
Zealand next Friday night.
Australia's team to meet the Kiwis at Aussie Stadium will be named on
Sunday night.
For most of the season, Australian selectors been searching for a
replacement for injured Test pivot Trent Barrett.
Bulldogs pivot Braith Anasta was the preferred choice but a form
lapse cost him a run in the first two Origin games.
Anasta was thrown a lifeline in game three on Wednesday night at
Suncorp Stadium but was probably picked out of position at lock.
While he set up NSW's only try with a kick for winger Timana Tahu,
it's likely Anasta did not do enough in a badly beaten side to get
the nod at five-eighth ahead of the consistent Timmins.
The same goes for Queensland candidate Ben Ikin, even though he had
his best game of the series.
Ikin's kicking game produced two of Queensland's seven tries
including the spectacular effort by centre Brent Tate towards the end
of the match.
Ikin and Timmins overcame enormous odds after undergoing a series
knee reconstructions to return to the game's elite level.
Ikin is certain to get support in the selection room from
Queensland's Artie Beetson and Les Geeves but it won't be enough to
sway NSW's Bob McCarthy and Bob Fulton.

No rest for the wizard
By PETER FRILINGOS; CONCERNED Newcastle coach Michael Hagan
considered resting Andrew Johns from tonight's clash with Penrith at
EnergyAustralia Stadium.
Hagan, worried the champion halfback faced burnout because of his
gruelling schedule, weighed up giving Johns the night off to recover
from Wednesday's State of Origin finale.
After taking on Penrith, Johns will lead Australia against New
Zealand at Aussie Stadium next Friday night then back up on Sunday
against Wests Tigers at Campbelltown Stadium.
Hagan, the Queensland assistant coach, spoke to Johns in the NSW
dressing room shortly after the shock 36-6 loss to the rampaging
Maroons at Suncorp Stadium.
"I think I was probably thinking about resting Joey because he looked
mentally and physically tired," Hagan said yesterday.
"But after training sharply, today he feels a lot better about things.
"So I don't think he'll miss this one against the Panthers but we'll
continue to monitor the situation."

State of Origin rating success
As well as establishing a record series attendance over its three
matches of 183,682, the 2003 Harvey Norman State of Origin Series
brought to you by Philips has proved an overwhelming ratings success.
Origin 1, 2, and 3 have supplied the top three most watched
programmes of any type in Sydney and Brisbane so far in 2003.
Last night's third game (from kick off to full time) averaged 957,625
(peaking at 1,040,000) viewers in Sydney and 706,250 (peaking at
769,000) in Brisbane.
Regional Australia again gave the game its overwhelming support with
1,144,000 viewers tuning in through the WIN and NBN networks
nationally over the entire telecast (this refers to the full three
hour telecast, the 15 minute breakdowns from kick off to full time
would be even higher).
The series has again been a spectacular success and shows the
tremendous enthusiasm there is for the game
Despite late night telecasts outside of NSW and Queensland, game
three of the Harvey Norman State of Origin series still attracted an
overall broadcast figure (including preliminary and post game
coverage) of 1,621,993.
This brings the total audience both regional and metropolitan to
2,765,993.
"The series has again been a spectacular success and shows the
tremendous enthusiasm there is for the game," ARL Chief Executive, Mr
Geoff Carr said today.
"The ARL would like to pay tribute to the players, the fans, the on
field officials and the clubs who have all contributed to the
success.
"We couldn't have had a better lead in to Friday week's Test match
against New Zealand and it remains incredible to think of the talent
Australian selectors will have to choose from on Sunday night."

Five-eighth a problem for the Kiwis
By Graham Lowe
It will be interesting to see who is named at stand-off for the
Kiwis, considering frontrunner Lance Hohaia seems to be on the outer
and can't make his club side.
He seems like a young player needing a bit of confidence, but I would
imagine there would be a few questions asked, and rightly so, if he
could make the Kiwis, but not the Warriors.
I noticed former Kiwi and Warrior coach Frank Endacott suggesting
Sione Faumuina for the position, and I can see the merit in that, and
why it could work.
A couple of weeks ago in this column I suggested the Raiders' Rueben
Wiki for similar reasons to Frank's suggestion.
Players of this size would be difficult for the Aussies to handle,
but another name worthy of consideration for this position is Henry
Perenara.
Although he is playing second-row for St George/Illawarra, he could
handle the No 6 role for the Kiwis without a problem. He is a class
player and maybe, even a future Kiwi captain.

Chris and Daniel Anderson will be refreshed
By Graham Lowe
The Australian and New Zealand coaches, Chris and Daniel Anderson,
will be refreshed after their respective breaks with their test sides
next week.
Working with a new bunch of players will provide an added enthusiasm
to what has been a tough year for both men.
The old saying, a change is as good as a rest applies and I would
expect the two Andersons to return to their clubs with new purpose.
Coaching test teams nowadays in my opinion is not really coaching,
but more managing. Obviously, the coaches must pick the right team
and also be able to come up with a workable game plan that all
players are clear on.
It is a big step in the career of Daniel Anderson.
He has had a good run with the Warriors, and this chance will help
develop his style and approach to another level.
New Zealand are blessed with plenty of firepower in their ranks and,
equally important, plenty of experience, so I can't see why, if the
best team is picked, they can't win.
In saying that I am well aware how tough the Aussies will be, but I
don't think they have the advantage over us they used to have in
years gone by.

Beware of shark-bite
By PETER JESSUP
The bite is on the Sharks - and if coach Chris Anderson can't turn
things around it will soon be on him.
Five wins, 11 losses; 316 points for, 435 against. Crowds down to
12,645 against an NRL average of 14,544.
The Sharks are the Greg Norman of league, They have played three
grand finals - in 1973, 1978 and 1997 - and lost them all.
They have been in the playoffs every year since 1999, when they were
minor premiers, and have been eliminated each time.
If clubs have a culture of winning or losing, theirs is of winning
everything but the big ones.
It's something the Cronulla club board clearly wanted to rectify when
it bought the Australian coach and gave him a free hand to make
changes.
The first thing he did was pay over the odds to get Brett Kimmorley,
his 1999 grand-final-winning halfback and the man he prefers ahead of
Andrew Johns in the No 7 jersey.
Then he moulded the team around Kimmorley and the flat attacking
style he favours - a game of wide passes, kicking and confrontation.
It took a while to get into gear and the Sharks' fans weren't happy.
A semifinal place last year mollified them, but now it's all on.
It hasn't been easy for Anderson.

Sing likely to win Test berth
By Steve Ricketts
MATT Sing is set to complete a stunning comeback to representative
rugby league by being named in the Australian team on Sunday night
for next Friday's Test against New Zealand in Sydney.
The 28-year-old Queensland winger is at the forefront of a likely
change of direction by the national selectors after he scored three
tries in the Maroons' 36-6 win over NSW at Suncorp Stadium on
Wednesday night.
Sing has played four Tests for Australia, his last appearance off the
bench in the Anzac Test in 1999, and the other three matches when
Super League-aligned players were not considered.
Now he is set to displace Newcastle's Timana Tahu from the Test side
with NSW fullback Anthony Minichiello to be the other winger.
After being beaten 25-12 in Origin 1 and 27-4 in the return match,
Queensland needed to win convincingly to get any more than three
players Gorden Tallis, Darren Lockyer and Shane Webcke in the Test
17.
Queensland representatives on the Test panel, Arthur Beetson and Les
Geeves, now believe the Maroons can get at least six players in the
squad, the same number as last year for the mid-season Test against
Great Britain when the Origin series was drawn.
Other front-line contenders from Queensland are centre Brent Tate and
forwards Petero Civoniceva and Dane Carlaw, while Steve Price and
Shaun Berrigan also could come into contention.

Beetson plumps for Test pivot Berrigan
Arthur Beetson will push for Queensland halfback Shaun Berrigan to
fill the contentious five-eighth role for Australia in Friday week's
Test against New Zealand.
National selectors will meet with coach Chris Anderson on Sunday to
thrash out a side to play the Kiwis at Aussie Stadium.
NSW players had been expected to dominate the 17-man squad until the
Maroons ambushed Phil Gould's Blues 36-6 in the final State of Origin
match to command greater Queensland representation in the trans-
Tasman Test.
With Test incumbent Trent Barrett out for the season, Queensland five-
eighth Ben Ikin having a mixed interstate series and Braith Anasta
playing just the one Origin game at lock, NSW's stop-gap pivot Shaun
Timmins was earmarked to wear the Australian No.6 jumper.
But Beetson, who along with Les Geeves form the Queensland arm of the
selection panel, said the tough and versatile Berrigan must also come
under close consideration, along with several other Maroons stars
from the romp.
"You've got a few options there but, to me, I think Berrigan could
arguably fill the role," Beetson said.
"He's a dynamic defensive player and he's a great support player.
"Especially the way (Darren) Lockyer plays and of course you've got
Andrew Johns there ... geez, you've got two great ball players. Is
there any need for any more ball players?
"With Berrigan there, we all know how good he is defensively and,
against the Kiwis, you want someone who puts their body on the line.
"Berrigan is someone who does that.
"I just think that we've spoken about this and that, and you can't
bring Freddie (Brad Fittler) back. You've got to move on and it will
be interesting what the thoughts of the other selectors are."
Anderson said the five-eighth position remained "wide open", but Bob
McCarthy - one of two New South Welshmen along with Bob Fulton on the
selection committee - said Timmins deserved to get the nod.
"As far as I'm concerned the bloke who was in the top two or three
(performers) in the first two games - Timmins - played alright again
last night," McCarthy said.
"He's done nothing wrong.

Stuart throws hat in NSW ring
By Dean Ritchie
RICKY STUART has emerged as a candidate to take over the NSW coaching
position as Phil Gould contemplates his future.
Gould indicated on Wednesday night he was ready to step down from the
NSW job, leaving the Blues as the most successful Origin coach in
history with five series wins.
His assistant Laurie Daley and North Queensland's Graham Murray were
considered the frontline contenders to replace him. But Stuart
yesterday confirmed his genuine interest in the job for the first
time.
"If asked to coach NSW I'd be very honoured," said Stuart, who last
season coached the Roosters to the premiership.
"But I would have to discuss a lot of issues with the Roosters
first."

Welcome caps off Origin dream
By CRAIG BAXTER
NORTH Queensland Cowboys Matt Sing, Matt Bowen and Josh Hannay
received a warm welcome home after their exploits for the victorious
Maroons in the third State-of-Origin match in Brisbane.
A crowd of about 50 well-wishers clapped and cheered the players as
they entered the Townsville Airport terminal yesterday afternoon.
The Cowboys trio were responsible for telling contributions in the 36-
6 victory over New South Wales at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night,
with Sing named man of the match for a record-equalling three-try
performance.
Debutant Hannay kicked four goals in addition to playing soundly at
centre, while reserve back Bowen set up a try with a 70m burst at his
first touch of the ball after coming on in the second half.
Hannay said the welcome home capped a "dream" week.
"The week (in camp) was a great experience and to top it off with a
victory in that fashion was just a dream debut," Hannay said after
joining Sing and Bowen in signing a round of autographs for fans,
young and not so young.
"I had a lot of my family down there and it made it even more special
to share it with them.
"I didn't expect anything like this (at the airport) at all.
"It's very touching, very nice to see that people think well enough
of you to take the effort to come out here."

Leeds Rhinos in Liam Botham talks
Leeds Rhinos have confirmed their interest in signing former
Newcastle Falcons winger Liam Botham on a dual-code contract.
Botham has been linked with Tetley's Super League sides Bradford and
London Broncos since being released by the Falcons at the end of the
Zurich Premiership season.
The former England A international is believed to be keen on a move
into league but joining Leeds would also offer the opportunity to
play for the Rhinos' sister club, the Tykes.
Leeds spokesman Phil Daly told
http://www.superleague.co.uk: "We are
certainly interested.
"We have met with him, but hope to do something definite, one way or
the other, within the next week."
Featuring for Leeds Rhinos would make rugby league 25-year-old
Botham's third professional sport.
Botham played cricket for Hampshire before deciding to concentrate on
rugby union. He began his union career with West Hartlepool before
moving to Cardiff and then Newcastle.
Since being released by Newcastle, Botham has made his interest in
league known and was offered a trial by Bradford.
He featured for the Bulls Academy side but the club decided against
offering him a deal due to salary cap restrictions.

Robinson will join Neil Kelly's first team squad for Super League IX.
The former St Helens junior has made a tremendous impact in the
Vikings Senior Academy side scoring 12 tries in 12 appearances.
"This signing is a testimony to the work being done by our Academy
coach John Myler and I'm sure Robinson will not be the last player
from the Under-21s to make the step up to full-time,said Kelly.

Comets Set To Break Record
By Brett Harkin
The Rockhampton Leagues Club Central Comets are gearing up for their
round 17 clash with the Burleigh Bears on Saturday, July 19 at Browne
Park knowing a win will create club history.
Since the clubs inception into the Queensland Cup they have never
defeated the Burleigh Bears and they have never won three matches in
a row.
Already in 2003 the Comets have shown they are the best Comets team
in history by passing the record of four wins in a season.
While this is their best chance to break these records they face an
uphill battle with Burleigh at present being the form team of the
competition.
Comets forward Rex Gamble has been forced to withdraw through injury
and the Comets will also be without Gerard Parle who is away
representing the Australian Universities side.
Former Origin hooker John Doyle is also in huge doubt for the clash
after suffering a neck injury three weeks ago in his sides win over
the Easts Tigers.
While the odds seem to be stacked against the Comets one thing in
their favor is the fact 2,000 plus fans are expected for the clash to
get the Comets over the line at Browne Park.
Doyle has been named in the 17 however it's very unlikely he will
play with lock David Faiumu expected to slot back into five-eighth as
cover once again with Leroy Wilson expected to start at lock.
The Burleigh Bears have won their last three encounters in the Qld
Cup by 30 plus points and they would be expected to take this one out
however the same was said in round seven when these two sides last
clashed and the Bears only just got home 21-12 on that occasion.
Kick off for the main game is at 7-30 pm and the referee will be
local favourite Rob Alexander.

1. Ryan Cullen
2. Gavin Duffy
3. Rory Bromley

Old and slow, but Queensland aren't ready for the Blue rinse set just
yet
By Roy Masters
Last rites turned into a last laugh at Suncorp Stadium last night
when Queensland embarrassed NSW from the kick-off to the moment the
stage used to present the State of Origin trophy was wheeled away.
The 36-6 scoreline equalled Queensland's biggest win.
The Maroons, whose own hierarchy feared their players were too old
and slow to stop NSW from achieving a Blue rinse of the three-game
series, shocked NSW who were forced to accept the trophy as losers on
the night. The magnitude of relieved desperation in Brisbane at full-
time was palpable, both in the passionately parochial crowd and the
Queensland board room.
The rhythm and bruise was all provided by Queensland who dazzled with
their ball movement early in the second half as NSW simulated
cardboard cut-outs with their defensive efforts.
Redemption for Queensland came in two tidy packages.
The first was five-eighth Ben Ikin, the son-in-law of Queensland
coach Wayne Bennett. After stripping a few kilos off after dispirited
performances in the first two games and imposing a media ban on
himself, Ikin proved a perfect link man and tactical kicker.
Although booed by his own crowd in the first Origin game for
predictable kicking, Bennett showed faith in Ikin, who launched a
majestic rainbow kick from one side of the field to the other for
Queensland's first try.
New hooker Cameron Smith also redeemed the Queensland selectors, who
botched it in Origin II by not starting with a regular dummy-half.
Smith, 20 last month, provided sweet service to the Maroons pack
which was able to maintain momentum by receiving the ball from the
ruck, precisely on the advantage line.
He also made 23 tackles by half-time and 37 with 12 minutes
remaining, tightening the Maroons ruck.
Compared to their stellar play in the first two games, NSW were inept
and inert. Even the much admired telepathy between Newcastle
clubmates hooker Danny Buderus and half Andrew Johns deserted them.
Just before half-time, they demonstrated comic incapacity at a rare
penalty given in front of the posts by referee Bill Harrigan, with
Buderus dropping the ball.
At times, when the forwards dropped the ball and tried to retrieve
it, they resembled a man in a tub trying to find the soap.
Lacking cohesion, the Blues were stuck somewhere between mediocrity
and calamity for much of the match, although early injuries disrupted.
Queensland's passionate approach shocked NSW, who must have felt the
Maroons resembled a flock of sheep being led to an Origin
slaughterhouse.
However, the Maroons reared up and said "baa" to critics with captain
Gorden Tallis making nine runs for 90 metres in the first half, six
more runs than he made in all of the second game. A scorching tackle
by Johns on centre Brent Tate in only the second minute of the game
seemed to shock Queensland to action. Seconds later Maroons lock
Tonie Carroll hit Broncos teammate Michael De Vere high and was
placed on report.
A minute later Ikin launched his perfect parabola of a kick, which
took a low arc all the way across field for winger Matt Sing - who
scored three tries - to tap it back to Tate for a try.
The mere fact Tate recovered from that crunching tackle was
indicative of the Queensland resolve. Queensland's rescue of the
immediate future of the series is aligned with Tallis's determination.
From the fierce to the focused, the common trait among past
Queensland big-name players is an ability to concentrate on the game
and not the implications of the game. Bennett told Tallis to maintain
a clear head and focus on the details of the night and not on the
headlines the next morning.
Tallis sometimes resembles a tormented bull lunging at a cape but he
played a controlled game last night. Queensland reserve prop Steve
Price ran 60m, pushing off two would-be tacklers, before stumbling
five metres from the line midway through the second half. Queensland
demonstrated once again you can and trick and dance around but it all
comes down to hitting them harder than they are hitting you.

FURNER EXTENDS LEEDS DEAL
Former Australian Test forward David Furner, who has enjoyed a new
lease of life since being released by Wigan, has signed a new one-
year deal with Leeds which will keep him at Headingley until the end
of 2004.
Furner, 32, who joined the Rhinos last October 2002 on a 12-month
contract after becoming a victim of Wigan's cost-cutting, played a
key role in Leeds' run to the Challenge Cup final and their climb to
the top of the Tetley's Super League.
Coach Daryl Powell said: "Dave Furner has been a top quality signing
for us. He has been a vital part of our success this year and I am
delighted he has agreed to stay with us for another season."
The former Canberra forward, who has only missed two games this
season, said: "When I first signed for the club we agreed that it
would be for just one year so that I could see if I enjoyed playing
for Leeds and it has turned out that I do.

PROP LYNCH FIT TO RETURN FOR TIGERS
Castleford Tigers prop Andy Lynch has been given the all clear to
resume playing after seeing an eye specialist this week.
The Yorkshire front rower missed last weekend's defeat to St Helens
after picking up an eye injury in the victory over Halifax the
previous Sunday.
He visited a specialist to have checks on his recovery, and he has
been cleared to return to the Tigers side ahead of the visit to
Wakefield on Saturday.

THE SALARY CAP MUST GO, INSIST ANGRY HULL
Hull want an end to Super League's salary cap after having two points
deducted.
The Humberside club's chief executive David Plummer will get together
with representatives of St Helens and Halifax to decide their next
move after all three lost their appeals against two-point deductions
for breaching the salary cap.
And, though Rugby League's advisory panel rejected their appeals,
they are considering taking the issue to the courts and will move to
have the rules changed.
"We don't want it to sound like sour grapes but we will definitely be
moving at the Super League meeting on Friday to have these rules
changed," said Plummer.
"What I can't do is knock these rules today and then abide by them
tomorrow. That would be just as wrong.
"I genuinely believe they need tidying up. I'm not saying I that I
can tell you what the rules ought to be but I want to be part of the
process with all the other Super League clubs to get something that
is workable.
"Changing the rules is non-negotiable. We are going to work towards
that, whatever else we try to do."
The salary cap, introduced four years ago to help the clubs prudently
manage their finances, restricts spending on players' wages to 50% of
income up to a maximum of £1.8 million.
But Plummer claims that clubs unwittingly fall foul of the rules
because there have been so many amendments since 1999.
He added: "The rules specifically say that any penalty for a breach
of the salary cap must be applied at the start of the following
season.
"The process didn't start until after the season had started. If we
have to abide by the rules, why don't the RFL?"
Saints chairman Eamonn McManus said: "We are flabbergasted at this
outcome and feel stronger then ever that we were never in breach of
the rules as they are written and as they have been previously
interpreted.
"We will be looking at alternative forms of remedy in conjunction
with Hull FC and Halifax."

Rabbitohs nab junior Kiwi
South Sydney has beaten out three other clubs to sign Kiwi junior
international Dallas Rennie from the New Zealand Warriors.
The highly-regarded 19 year-old was being sought by Manly, Brisbane
and Cronulla for next season but signed a two-year deal with the
Rabbitohs.
South Sydney announced the news on its website, with coach Paul
Langmack lauding the 110kg prop.
"Dallas has enormous potential," Langmack told AAP.
"He's the type of skilful and aggressive giant that we need to become
a more intimidating unit."
"Injuries over the last 12 months have punctuated his career, but I
think he'll be a big hit with the Rabbitohs."
In other news, the Rabbitohs have re-signed forward Luke Stuart until
the end of the 2005 season while young hooker James Storer also has
chosen to stay with the club.

Ryles may face season-ending surgery
St George Illawarra prop Jason Ryles will find out soon whether he
faces a season-ending shoulder reconstruction.
Ryles suffered nerve damage to his shoulder in the first half of the
dead rubber Origin match in Brisbane, dashing his hopes of playing
his sixth Test for Australia in the clash with New Zealand at Aussie
Stadium.
The Dragons will release news of his fate Friday but issued a
statement saying the 24-year-old prop would be out of action for at
least two weeks and possibly for the rest of the National Rugby
League season.
Ryles had an MRI scan on his shoulder, five weeks after suffering an
injury in the same area during Origin I.
Dragons teammate Amos Roberts is also facing season-ending shoulder
surgery and underwent an athroscopy.
The injuries are a massive blow to the joint venture club, which has
already lost captain Trent Barrett (ankle/knee) and hard-working
forward Lance Thompson (foot) for the season.
St George Illawarra coach Nathan Brown will not name a replacement
for Ryles until Saturday afternoon, prior to kick-off against North
Queensland in Townsville.
Shaun Timmins left for Townsville from Brisbane along with fellow NSW
Origin rep Luke Bailey.
Brown is hopeful Timmins will play but he is in some doubt with a
shoulder complaint.

Gould will return - Daley
NSW assistant coach Laurie Daley believes Phil Gould will be back to
coach the Blues in 2004.
Speculation is rife that Gould will quit his post after he led NSW to
a 2-1 series victory this year but Daley is confident there won't be
a change.
"He hasn't spoken to me but if I was a betting man I'd say he'll go
around again," Daley told reporters at Sydney Airport.
"I'm expecting Gus to be there and I think he should be there because
he's done a tremendous job." "I hope he stays on because he's the
best man for the job. He gets the guys to play to their best
potential." Gould hasn't indicated when he will make his decision.

Tigers sign trio
The Wests Tigers have continued their build-up for next season by
signing Brisbane's Scott Prince, Parramatta's Pat Richards and
Penrith's Ben Reynolds for next season.
The Tigers have been one of the most active teams in the marketplace,
with a number of players coming off contract at season's end.
The trio will join Parramatta's Brett Hodgson, who signed a deal with
the Tigers last week, at the club next season.
Prince has struggled with injury at the Broncos since arriving as the
replacement for Allan Langer.
He has spent the majority of this season out of first grade but is
seen by the Tigers as their halfback for 2004.
Tigers coach Tim Sheens, who was the coach of North Queensland when
Prince made his first grade debut as a member of the Cowboys in 1998,
" Its great to be linking up with Scott again, he is an enormous
talent," Sheens said in a media release.
We are building a side with a number of our younger players, who are
playing well recently and now gaining more established stars such as
Scott, Brett Hodgson and Pat Richards."
"This is a fantastic time for our club."
Richards, who is a winger, has also had a horrific run with injury
since bursting onto the scene in 2000.
The 21 year-old has played 36 first grade games for the Eels.
Reynolds, who plays halfback, has been stuck behind Craig Gower at
the Panthers but is regarded as a promising player.
