RLCM 'Everyday' Coaching Quote for Friday

" To many people confuse 'simple' with 'easy' - the very best can
make things look simple because of their competence, but we should
remember that many hours of practice lie behind the simplicity"

What does Sports Performer do?
Posted Friday, June 27, 2003 by rlcm57

What does Sports Performer do?

RLCM, the distributor of SPORTS PERFORMER, was asked the question by
an interested internet reader.

Basically, you can record and then analyse whatever you want.

For example, a coach could record everything the No.7 does on the
right hand side and left hand side simply by clicking 7R or 7L on the
computer keyboard every time he touches the ball. The Sport
Performer software will capture all those plays and save them from
two seconds before the event and say five seconds after.

Then it will make two movies of those clips and you can review and
analyse both the left side or the right side separately.

The coach can make a video or CD and give it to the player. It can
be saved on a file and added to after every game and any improvement
or deterioration of form or skill can be analysed.

So, how many other scenarios can be analysed?

The many hours of watching video with the remote in hand -
play/stop/rewind/play/stop/rewind/play/pause/rewind/record will soon
be a memory for coaches.

Every player, play, tackle, pass, play the ball, time on the ground,
time with the dance, running angles, catch, kick, left shoulder,
right shoulder, square at the tackle, ad line defence, markers, every
set or every tackle 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 in that set, coming out of your own
end, first receiver catch and pass -

It goes on and on. Whatever you want out of a game or the
opposition's game can be captured by a click on the keyboard as you
are watching the video through you computer.

Think of the time that will be saved.

Video data systems are not new. They have been around for years but
check the prices of other systems.

They are priced for professional clubs and professional coaches.
RLCM, distributors of Sports Performer, are targeting the everyday
football club, schools and the coach who understands coaching and is
searching for an 'edge'.

Other analysis systems costing between AUS$30,000 to AUS$60,000 have
1000's of stats that can be tagged.

Sports Performer at AUS$2500.00 can do the same.

RLCM has instituted a monthly direct debit payment plan to assist
purchasers .

After the successful launching of SPORTS PERFORMER at the recent
Telstra Sydney Football Expo, the next presentation for coaches will
be held at the Super Sports Centre at Runaway Bay next week.

It all goes according to Gould's script as Bennett and Maroons lose
the plot

By Roy Masters: One hour before kick-off in the second State of
Origin match, NSW coach Phil Gould knew Queensland had lost the plot.

Maroons coach Wayne Bennett named bench forward Dane Carlaw in the
starting team.

Carlaw had performed poorly in Origin I and Gould, remembering the
mobile second-rower's last-minute 40-metre gallop to score a try to
draw the series in Sydney last year, feared him coming off the
bench. "By naming Carlaw in the starting team, it contradicted what I
thought he [Bennett] was trying to do," Gould said.

Carlaw has disappointed in two consecutive games, a potential long-
term problem for Queensland because he is one of the few "young
veterans" in an ageing pack. Queensland forwards Gorden Tallis, Shane
Webcke and 33-year-old Andrew Gee are feeling for the first time the
sting of words like "old" and "finished" and "slow".

But the Blues camp still fears the Maroons, pointing out that players
like Bradley Meyers have not been used in the series.

They also argue that the injury to prop Steve Price was the turning
point in the game.

Ben Kennedy's brutal tackle on Price came in the 25th minute and the
Blues scored their third try shortly afterwards.

Bennett's decision to use Roosters back-rower Michael Crocker as
dummy-half failed.

In his first Origin match, before an 80,000 crowd, it was a big ask
to have Crocker duck his head into the ruck and feed monsters
appearing at a pace faster than club football.

Gould, too intent on watching his own team, did not notice Queensland
had no regular dummy-half until the third set.

But he did observe the Maroons' confusion at the second scrum, when
the backs stood like bewildered bidders at an auction, each waiting
for the other to lock the scrum.

"I didn't miss that," Gould said.

Gould dismissed the theory he had deliberately engineered NSW's
sloppy preparation for the Sydney game, prompting his "I can smell a
defeat a mile off" comment. Blues who have played under Gould in past
Origin I winning teams claim he scales back the intensity for the
second game, fearing Queensland will be super motivated and, should
he put everything into it and lose, he will have nothing left for a
deciding game.

"No way," Gould said. "I didn't want to go to Brisbane [for Origin
III on July 16] one-all."

With NSW leading 17-0 at half-time, Gould exhorted the players as
they returned to the field with the words: "Would Steve Waugh give up
if he'd scored 80?"

The Blues were very impressed with a talk given by the Australian
cricket captain before Origin I and Gould exploited this.

Gould's determination for victory included planned flouting of the
rules on the use of the staple gun. Dr John Orchard, the NSW medico,
was ordered by Gould to staple Blues centre Jamie Lyon on the field.

However, a fortuitous break in play and Lyon's proximity to the
sideline nearer the dressing room meant Orchard could attend to the
injury in the stadium tunnel.

The only disappointment for the Blues was Kennedy's reckless high-
tackle charge. The NSW camp muttered darkly about the half-a-match
penalty handed Tallis in Brisbane and the four-match suspension given
Kennedy, with Gould saying: "He will fight it."

Queensland's unenthusiastic approach to publicising Origin football
also rankled.

One official asked Australian Rugby League chief executive Geoff
Carr: "Are pay rises for players the best Bennett can do to promote
the series?"

Gould can stay on...if he wants

By Brad Walter, Steve Mascord and Rob Murray: After guiding NSW to a
State of Origin series victory, coach Phil Gould is set to be re-
appointed to the post next season - if he wants it.

While Queensland coach Wayne Bennett effectively has the job for
life, Gould's position has been the source of constant speculation
since NSW officials talked him out of his decision to quit at the end
of last year's campaign.

Gould's dispute with News Ltd, which prompted him to again consider
his future earlier this year, and his highly publicised spat with
Blues skipper Andrew Johns before Origin I had most people believing
he would not coach again.

If NSW won the series, as they have done, it was assumed he would
walk away satisfied that he was the most successful coach in State of
Origin history.

A loss would have resulted in the NSWRL sacking him, and one director
yesterday confirmed that the coach had polarised the board.

Gould yesterday told reporters at a Sydney Roosters training session
that the Blues' success had made him consider standing for the job
again, and he would "think about it" over the coming weeks.

The NSWRL isn't due to appoint next year's coach until later this
year, but having regained the Origin trophy after last season's drawn
series, Gould's record leaves the board with little choice but to
offer him the job again.

"Not everyone on the board is happy with the way he's handled things
but after winning the series it would be pretty hard to sack him,"
the director said. "If we lost next year, then those people would
have egg on their faces."

NSWRL chairman Colin Love said he hadn't approached Gould about his
intentions for next season but would speak with him after the series.

Queensland Rugby League general manager Ross Livermore said last
night that Bennett would always have a role with the Maroons - even
if he was not coach.

Queenslanders fall on their own grenade

By Stuart Honeysett: WHETHER he likes it or not, Wayne Bennett is
about to come full circle.

The Queensland coach returned to the State of Origin arena two years
ago to rescue the Maroons from oblivion.

In 2000, the Queensland jumper took a battering at the hands of a red-
hot NSW side. By the time the carnage was over, the Maroons were the
not so proud owners of a record 56-16 defeat in Game III.

Bennett watched, grimaced and squirmed before the TV at home as NSW
second-rower Bryan Fletcher lobbed a hand grenade to scatter his team-
mates in a post-try celebration. It was at that point he made a vow
to himself: "never again."

The QRL had exactly the same thought and Queensland's most successful
coach returned to take over from Mark Murray for the 2001 series.
Bennett came armed with a three-year plan. Rebuild in year one, be
ultra-competitive in year two and enjoy the spoils of victory in year
three.

Maroons prepared for Test snub

Dean Ritchie: QUEENSLAND may face the indignity of having just two
players named in Australia's starting team to play New Zealand at
Aussie Stadium on July 25.

The Maroons are bracing for their biggest Test snub since 1994 when
only three players Mal Meninga, Steve Walters and Steve Renouf
started against Great Britain at Elland Road, Leeds.

With NSW having won the opening two State of Origin matches, the
second by 23 points on Wednesday night, fullback Darren Lockyer and
second-rower Gorden Tallis are the only Maroons certain of selection
in the starting Test team.

Prop Shane Webcke will be in the squad but may start from the bench
behind NSW pair Jason Ryles and Luke Bailey.

Bailey was man of the match in Origin I and was outstanding again in
the return match.

Webcke himself admitted after Origin II that the Maroons would be
hard pressed to win Test jerseys this year.

Morrison may play

By CRAIG BAXTER: NORTH Queensland Cowboys linchpin Glenn Morrison is
expected to play in the important National Rugby League match against
Cronulla at Dairy Farmers Stadium tomorrow evening.

The hard-working lock has been battling a shoulder injury sustained
in the match against Parramatta last weekend.

"I've spoken to the doctor and he's indicated that at Glenn's current
rate of improvement, he'll play," Cowboys football manager Peter Parr
said yesterday.

Parr said a decision on the fitness of Queensland State-of-Origin
winger Matt Sing would be taken following training this morning.

"Matt got a bit battered and bruised on Wednesday night and he's
fairly sore but at the moment he is expected to play," he said.

Parr said fullback Matt Bowen and interchange prop John Buttigieg --
who missed the match with Parramatta with knee swelling -- would play
against the Sharks.

his squad for the encounter with the only addition being that of St
Helensforward Jon Wilkin.

National League Under 21 coach Steve McCormack will name his side
early next week.

McCormack said: We have a training session on Saturday and many of
the players are involved in the National League programme over the
weekend so we will delay our selection process until weve seen what
happens.

Rhino Netherton joins London Broncos

London Broncos have signed a third player on loan from Leeds after
learning that Mat Toshack faces up to six weeks out with a broken leg.

The Broncos have moved to bring in Rhinos youngster Jason Netherton
after scans confirmed fears that Toshack had sustained a break after
a fall in training last week.

Second-rower Netherton has struggled to break into the Rhinos first
team after making his debut two years ago and has signed a one-month
deal in the capital.

The 20-year-old joins fellow Leeds players Tommy Gallagher and Damien
Kennedy, who are already on temporary contracts with the Griffin Park-
based club.

He is likely to go straight into the squad to face Halifax at The
Shay on Saturday.

Alberts A Bronco

Brett Harkin: The Rockhampton Leagues Club Central Comets have
released former North Queensland Cowboy Ashley Alberts.

The release took place after Alberts starred for the Queensland under
19s side in the demolish of the NSW 19s in a curtain raiser to State
Of Origin 1 in Brisbane.

The 19-year-old scored two tries in that match as captain and caught
the eye of the Brisbane Broncos and in just over a week Alberts was
signed with the Broncos.

It's a great opportunity for Alberts and the Comets didn't want to
stand in his way. The Rockhampton Leagues Club Comets wish him all
the best in his move to the Broncos where it's expected he will start
out in their Colts side however he endeavors to make the National
Rugby League once again.

Alberts played a total of seven Queensland Cup games in 2003 for the
Comets scoring four tries.

Exciting climax in store for the Summer Conference

Edinburgh Eagles can clinch the Scotland R.L. Summer Conference
League title when they take on Clyde Buccaneers at Wardie Playing
Fields on Saturday (2pm kick-off).

The Eagles, who reached the quarter finals at last week's York
International 9's, will be without Kiwi playmaker Andre Thomas with a
knee injury and hooker Nicolas Unanue, who has returned back home to
his native France.

Club Secretary Mark Brown is delighted at the way the team have been
able to gel together this season after a change of coach at the start
of the season.

"With Simon Harrison making way for our new coach
Jim 'The Pig' Michie, we have been able to bring in some fresh ideas
and we are aiming for a Grand Final victory next week, but most
importantly our priority is to defeat Clyde on Saturday and stay
injury free for the Final."

Former Eagles player Peter Oshagbemi has been signed on a month's
trial with Gateshead Thunder in the National League 2, where he will
team up with former team mate Clint Brown.

Also in the Capital this weekend, Portobello Playboys must beat the
Glasgow Bulls at Cavalry Park to stand any chance of making the main
final, however a victory may not be enough as 2nd placed Fife Lions
take on Border Raiders knowing that a win by any margin will set up a
Grand Final tie against the reigning champions, Edinburgh Eagles.

Elliott bags NRL

Canberra coach Matt Elliott has denied harassing touch judge during
last weeks loss to New Zealand.

The Raiders received a submission from the NRL stating that they will
be fined $5000 for four breaches during the loss, including an
allegation that Elliott harassed linesman Matt Cecchin.

The club was also alleged to have not reported an interchange player
to the interchange official, of making a late submission on the team
sheet and of having too many people on the sideline bench.

However, Elliott has vigorously denied abusing Cecchin, telling AAP
he has already complained to the NRL.

"In no way did I abuse or harass the touch judge," Elliott said.

"I am dumbfounded at the claim and have expressed my disappointment
to the NRL that the Breach notice contains incorrect facts in this
regard."

The Raiders have until July 7 to defend the allegations to the NRL.

Kennedy's Origin over

NSW forward Ben Kennedy has been suspended for four matches at the
ARL judiciary, ruling him out of the third State of Origin match.

Kennedy was found guilty of a grade-one reckless high-tackle for his
hit on Queenslands Steve Price in the 25th minute of the Blues27-4
series-clinching win.

The Newcastle forward attempted to have the charge downgraded at
Thursday's judiciary hearing but his request was turned down by the
three-man panel of Judge Greg Woods, Ron Coote and Kevin Brasch.

The 29 year-old had already pleaded guilty to the tackle, but tried
to have the charge reduced to a careless high-tackle.

If he had accepted the original charge, he would have received a
three-match ban. Due to his challenge, he lost the benefit of an
early guilty plea, putting him at risk of a four-game suspension.

Kennedy will miss the Knights' matches against Parramatta, the
Bulldogs and Penrith as well as the third Origin match.

Broncos players vow to bounce back

Battle-weary Brisbane prop Shane Webcke is confident the club's 11
Origin players will "get up" on Friday night against the Roosters
whose Origin stars will still be on a high.

"We've got to get up, that's our job, it's what we get paid for,"
said Webcke, again overshadowed by Blues' pair Robbie Kearns and
Jason Ryles and new Test prospect Luke Bailey in the Blues' 27-4 win.

"I know I won't have a problem.

"I'd say most of us would want to get back on the field and make up
for last night."

Brisbane will have the backing of a 30,000-plus Suncorp Stadium crowd
when they protect top spot on the NRL ladder against the defending
premiers.

Talented scrum utility Brett Seymour is tipped to replace injured
five-eighth Ben Ikin (bruised shin) while winger Scott Minto (ankle)
could be replaced by Craig Frawley.

Test centre Shane Tate, who injured his neck last night, is expected
to play while former Origin forward Carl Webb will play his first NRL
game of the season after being restricted by a chronic hamstring
injury.

In all, 17 players are booked to back-up from last night's Origin,
with the Roosters holding a distinct mental edge with four of their
six representatives featuring in the Blues' 27-4 series clinching
victory.

Queensland depth problem highlighted again

By Steven Birchall:It was highlighted in 2000 as a major problem
which would hurt Queensland, brushed away when they won series 2001
and retained the trophy in 2002, but again the problem of 2000 has
started to show its head again, Queensland have a serious depth
problem.

Whilst a full strength Queensland side has no problems matching it
with NSW, as shown in Game One of the series, take out a few key
players like PJ Marsh, Justin Hodges and Paul Bowman, it seriously
hurts the attacking potential of the Maroons.

Looking at last nights match, it was clear defence was not the
Queenslands main problem, yes other than the first try, they did have
defensive lapses which let NSW score vital points from, a lot of this
stemmed from the fact that whenever the side had the ball, it either
went no where and had to rely on a long kick to get out of its red
zone, or the side panicked and threw bad passes which handed over
more possession to NSW.

The side seriously needed the style of player who could find a even
the smallest gap in the NSW defence and try and exploit it, some line
like Rhys Wesser, or even if the team decided to go the other way and
play it safe with its kicking game someone like Clinton Schifcofske
would of offered at least another option for a side, which played
like it had none.

Now whilst there were still those handful of key performers who were
left out of the Queensland side, overall there isnt much below that.

For the Queensland State of Origin side for each position there seems
to be two or three players in the running, however there is nothing
behind that. This verses NSW who tend to have around 10 players to
pick from for each position.

On paper and based upon the numbers game alone there is no reason why
NSW should ever lose an Origin, Queensland of course have never been
ones to let statistics mean much, but still the depth problem is only
going to keep growing north of the border unless something is done
about the Queensland youth policy.

First off, only having two Professional clubs limits the number of
spots Queensland players can get in Queensland.

The cutting of South Queensland and Gold Coast have started showing
there true downfalls now, whilst they werent Origin producing clubs,
they were Queensland Youth developing clubs, and gave talented
players a platform to play in the best competition in the world.

Gould says Queensland at end of era

Queensland is at the end of an era while New South Wales is just
getting started, Blues Origin coach Phil Gould said.

Following New South Wales' 27-4 demolition job on Queensland to take
out the State of Origin series 2-0, Gould said it was the beginning
of an era.

"They (Queensland) are probably on the end of a very good era where
we are on the start of a good era," he told Channel Seven's Today.

"When you have got a player like Andrew Johns to lead your side, as I
say, the brand of football we can play off the back of his skill
makes us pretty hard to beat at the moment."

Gould hinted that it was time some of Queensland's older players were
replaced.

When you have got a player like Andrew Johns to lead your side, as I
say, the brand of football we can play off the back of his skill
makes us pretty hard to beat at the moment.

Gould was full of praise for his captain Johns, with whom he had a
reported rift before game one in the series, and for blockbusting
prop Luke Bailey.

"Well Andrew Johns is an exceptional talent, a once in an era type
player ... Luke Bailey he will play for Australia this year as a
front rower, I am very confident of that.

"We've got some good young players that we have introduced to Origin
football the last couple of years who are about to get some pretty
high individual honours."

Maroons fans hunt for scapegoats

Disgruntled Queensland fans started searching for scapegoats in the
wake of the first State of Origin series loss to NSW in three years.

And high on their list of targets after the series-clinching 27-4
victory by NSW in Sydney was Brisbane five-eighth Ben Ikin.

Criticism of Ikin's defence and kicking game was prominent on the
forum page on the Broncos' website, while his father-in-law and
Brisbane and Queensland coach Wayne Bennett was also singled out.

One supporter said Bennett's Origin assistant and Newcastle coach
Michael Hagan should take over as head coach next year.

"He is a fresh coach who will inject some life into the side," said
the fan dubbed Player.

"He has big game experience from Newcastle winning the comp and he
won't be biased to Broncos players and put them in the squad - like
(Andrew) Gee and Ikin for example. He will inject some young blood
into the squad and probably the most important thing is that he will
know the whole Buderus, Tahu, Gidley, Kennedy and Johns combo and
will know how to shut it down."

Broncos supporter "King Queenslander" called for Ikin to be sacked
for game three in Brisbane next month.

"Unfortunately injury has robbed Iken (sic) of one of his greatest
strengths - his speed. No longer blessed with speed he relies on his
passing game - at best it is adequate."
