RLCM 'Everyday' Coaching Quote for Wednesday
" Although an integral facet of rugby league, most coaches neglect to
teach their players how to fall with the ball correctly. Some
consider it instinct, but for the main it is somewhat akin to the
action perfected by cricket wicket-keepers."

NSW prepare for six of best
By DEAN RITCHIE; THE NSW camp has discussed the possibility of an
early Queensland blitzkrieg with the Maroons planning to start
tonight's State of Origin match with six running forwards.
The Blues feel Shaun Berrigan may not play as a conventional halfback
and instead play out of dummy-half.
That would enable the Maroons to start tonight's second Origin game
with all forwards running.
Hooker Michael Crocker would not act as a dummy-half but play more as
a secondrower.
NSW had their final session at Stadium Australia at 5pm yesterday
before walking out in front of tonight's 80,000 sell-out crowd.
"We are expecting the unexpected," Daley said.
"That way they could start with six running forwards.
"We've certainly discussed it and have tossed around a few options.
"It certainly wouldn't surprise me.
"They may also use Berrigan at hooker and move Crocker into the back
row."
NSW forwards Jason Ryles and Luke Bailey agreed a versatile
Queensland side may shift around their players during the match.
"They've got Travis Norton there who can play with the ball a bit
more," said Ryles.
"I think they'll use Shaun Berrigan at hooker too.
"And maybe Michael Crocker in the second row. They've definitely
strengthened their side in attack.
"It's certainly a bigger side as well."

Timmins to face curse
ST GEORGE Illawarra's Shaun Timmins should beware of the captain's
curse that struck his club again last night.
Timmins became the club's third captain this season when Lance
Thompson was ruled out for six weeks with a broken foot.
Thompson inherited the job from Trent Barrett who is out for the
season with a crippling ankle injury.
Timmins will play five-eighth for NSW against Queensland in tonight's
return State of Origin game at Telstra Stadium before backing up for
the Dragons against Manly at Brookvale Oval on Saturday night.
The Dragons are experiencing their worst run of injuries for years.
Amos Roberts and John Cross are other notable casualties.
With Thompson out of action, NSW forward Luke Bailey will move from
prop to second row with Timmins to start at lock. Although the loss
of Thompson is a severe blow the Dragons will have Test player Mark
Gasnier back for the game.
Gasnier has recovered from the chipped knee bone that kept him out
for six weeks and ruined his chances of playing in the opening two
Origin games.

Maroons' rookie rake to kick
By Steve Ricketts: QUEENSLAND fullback Darren Lockyer has been
relieved of the goalkicking duties for tonight's return State of
Origin clash with NSW at Telstra Stadium after battling an ankle
injury for the last 10 days.
Rookie hooker Mick Crocker is the new kicker but his final practice
session at Telstra Stadium yesterday was unimpressive. Coach Wayne
Bennett was forced to offer some advice even though he does not
regard himself as an expert in that area.
"I'm not much help," Bennett said. "I'm a bit like the fans on that
one. They think they know what they're talking about."
Bennett said he had never been concerned about Lockyer's fitness,
saying the Maroons fullback had nothing more than a ligament problem
which, if aggravated, remained sore for no more than 30 seconds.
"We'll go with Crocker first up as kicker," Bennett said. "We'll see
what happens after that."
Bennett said he was looking for an improvement in defence more than
anything else. "We have to pay a bit more respect to their top
players and not assume they can't break our line," he said.
"If we don't all do our job we can be very vulnerable."
Bennett said he did not intend making any late changes to the
starting side. "But tomorrow, who knows?"

Joey's mum tea bags toads
By Natalie Williams: WHAT will NSW captain Andrew Johns be doing
while the rest of NSW waits nervously for kick off in tonight's State
of Origin II?
He will be having a cup of tea and a chat with his mum and dad, Gayle
and Gary Johns.
And definitely not talking about football.
It's a ritual the trio use to calm down before the big games.
But it is more to settle the nerves of Mr and Mrs Johns than those of
the world's greatest player.
"We'll see him a few hours before the game," said Mrs Johns, who has
been watching her son play since he was barely four.
"We sit down with him and have a cup of tea and chat.
"We don't really need to say anything, just being with him is good
for all of us.
"We end up talking about anything but football.
"We are more nervous than him. He's usually watching a bit of TV
often the horse racing.
"Just before the Brisbane match [State of Origin I] he sent his dad
out to put a couple of bets on for him. I think he did all right out
of it, too."
Gary and Gayle Johns were travelling to Sydney from their Cessnock,
Hunter Valley, home by car with friends this morning.

Maroons ready for the big arm wrestle
By Brad Walter: Ladies and gentleman, get ready to rumble.
Judging by the Queensland team's preparation, tonight's big game at
Telstra Stadium may resemble World Wrestling Entertainment more than
State of Origin.
Until yesterday the Maroons had been holed up at their Gold Coast
hideaway practising their wrestling techniques under the watchful eye
of Chris Haysman.
When they emerged in Sydney for an afternoon training session at the
Olympic venue, it was clear that the likes of Andrew "Stone Cold" Gee
and Petero "Junkyard Dog" Civoniceva might have a future in wrestling
when they give rugby league away.
With Gorden "the Rock" Tallis and Steve "Mr Wonderful" Price also in
the Queensland pack, NSW coach Phil Gould knows that his side is
going to have get down and dirty if the Blues are going to wrap up
the series tonight.
"It's pretty obvious what they're to achieve," he said after the
Blues followed Queensland onto the former Olympic stadium for a final
training session.
"Just about every club in the league has got some sort of instructor
or coach in that regard, that's the way the rules are interpreted
these days.
"I don't particularly agree with it but at the end of the day that's
the way the game is refereed and the game is won at the ruck and they
see that as a vital ingredient and it will be a vital ingredient come
game time."
Gould doesn't particularly agree with a lot of things his Queensland
counterpart Wayne Bennett does or says, and yesterday was no
different.
If Suncorp Stadium was a beach for Origin I, then Telstra Stadium is
a lake, according to Bennett.

The praised, the persecuted, the steward and the sledgehammer
By Roy Masters: Aristotle could not have been thinking about rugby
league when he wrote: "No excellent soul is exempt from a mixture of
madness."
Of the four key men in tonight's second State of Origin match, one
has been described as an "excellent soul" and the other three possess
a touch of madness.
Queensland coach Wayne Bennett, a father of the year, author of
philosophical tomes and a man lauded on the ABC's Australian Story,
is generally regarded as free of sin, a reputation which infuriates
southern coaches who view him as a manipulative puppeteer.
NSW coach Phil Gould, Blues captain Andrew Johns and Queensland
captain Gorden Tallis all have a mix of madness.
Gould is an insomniac with a persecution complex; Johns has more ups
and downs than the Inca Trail and Tallis suffers white line fever.
Anyone covering this year's series needs to have at least two degrees
in psychiatry and a couch and to bill their employers by the hour.
Both coaches are less concerned with getting onto the field as with
getting into one another's heads.
On Friday, Gould, an obsessive sender of text messages, was
complaining to National Rugby League chief executive David Gallop
about something Bennett had done.
On Sunday, Bennett was complaining to his assistants about the way in
which Gould uses his newspaper column to motivate the Blues.
Up until yesterday, Gould was not talking, which is a little like
Pavarotti not singing.

Seuseu given more time to rest
New Zealand Warriors prop Jerry Seuseu has been rested again this
weekend to try and rejuvenate him after a marathon 2002 rugby league
year.
Coach Daniel Anderson yesterday confirmed Seuseu needed a break after
a year which involved a National Rugby League (NRL) grand final
appearance then a tough Kiwis end-of-year tour of Britain and France.
Seuseu was rested for last weekend's 26-18 win over Canberra, will
miss this Sunday's match against Souths in Sydney, and has been told
he won't play until the Warriors meet the Cowboys in Townsville on
July 5.
"But he already wants to work his way back in and that's
encouraging," Anderson said.
The other Kiwis tourists in the Warriors had suffered injury and had
enforced breaks, barring Logan Swann and Stacey Jones.
Anderson, though, felt the pair didn't need to follow the lead of
Seuseu.
"Logan's form is unquestionable at the moment and while he's playing
like that we want him to continue," Anderson said.
"I asked Stacey if he wanted a break and he just said, 'Nah,' so it's
not going to happen, he's too integral to the team."
The side to take on Souths is largely unchanged from that who beat
Canberra.

Bennett supports pay rise
Steve Ricketts: QUEENSLAND coach Wayne Bennett yesterday backed
players' calls for more money for representative football as he
prepared the Maroons for what shapes as his last shot at further
State of Origin glory.
Bennett said the players were not greedy, but they did not want to be
the "bunnies" when rugby league stood to earn a $10 million bonanza
from this year's series with tonight's return match against NSW at
Sydney's Telstra Stadium an 80,000 sellout.
He warned administrators not to bury their heads in the sand because
the issue would not go away, particularly as the players were aware
of how much their counterparts in rugby union and cricket earned from
their big matches.
Origin players earn $5000 a match with players on the winning side in
each match getting a $2500 bonus making for a $22,500 payout for a
clean sweep.

Morrison no certainty to play
By ADAM GARDINI: KEY Cowboys lock Glenn Morrison will today undergo
an MRI scan on his injured shoulder to determine whether he will be
able to play in Saturday night's important National Rugby League
clash against Cronulla at Dairy Farmers Stadium.
Morrison injured his shoulder in last Saturday night's 24-22 loss to
Parramatta and coach Graham Murray said yesterday he was "in a bit of
doubt" despite being named in the Cowboys line-up for this weekend.
"Fingers crossed there, I hope he's right, but we will be guided by
the medical people and at this stage we are pretty confident that
he'll play," Murray said.
Prop John Buttigieg, who has been named on the bench, is also still
under a fitness cloud after being forced to pull out of last week's
game with a swollen knee.
Murray indicated the club would continue to monitor Buttigieg's
progress during the week.
"He's probably a look-and-see for the rest of the week but we're
pretty confident at this stage that he'll play," Murray said.
"He was swollen last week and all the swelling has come down so we
are hoping Butts will be right for this week."
Murray was also hoping the club's two Origin representatives, Matt
Sing and Matt Bowen, would return unscathed from tonight's second
rugby league State-of-Origin match in Sydney.
"We've just got our fingers crossed for the two of them, hopefully
they have great games and then they can back up for us on Saturday
evening," he said.

Origin families are big on support play
By ADAM GARDINI: QUEENSLAND State-of-Origin representatives Matt Sing
and Matt Bowen will have a strong support crew behind them in
tonight's second State-of-Origin game at Telstra Stadium.
Bowen's family including parents Richard and Lillian, brother Stanton
and sister Deleece have made the long journey to Sydney from Hope
Vale along with girlfriend Sam Sabatino in order to cheer on their
charge in his Origin debut.
Matt Sing will have his girlfriend Bree Parker and four-month-old son
Kalani in the stands to cheer him on.
Bowen's proud father Richard said he still couldn't believe his son
would be playing for Queensland tonight.
"I can't believe it until I see him out there," Richard said.
"I reckon he'll go well. He's got confidence in himself.
"He used to phone home every 10 minutes (when he first began playing
for the Cowboys) but now he doesn't -- he's confident."

Wigan's Dallas turns down Cronulla contract
Brett Dallas has turned down a lucrative contract with Australian
club Cronulla Sharks as he wants to fight for his place at Wigan.
He said: "Chris Anderson phoned me and offered me a contract for next
year on the understanding that I joined them immediately.
''Chris is a good friend and the offer was very tempting but I am
determined to get back into the Wigan side and above all I want a
Super League ring.
"I am out of contract at the end of the season but I am prepared to
take my chances, above all I want to put my injuries behind me and
get back into a very good Wigan side."
Chairman Maurice Lindsay said: "This just shows what great character
Brett Dallas has got.
''We would have not stood in his way if he had wanted to go. We are
delighted that he is sticking with us and more than anybody he
deserves better luck as he has had a terrible time with injuries.''
Coach Stuart Raper added: "I am delighted Brett has decided to stay
with us. The main thing now is getting his hamstring right so he can
get back into the squad."

Blues backed
Big punters rallied behind NSW yesterday, plunging $40,000 in two
bets on the Blues to beat Queensland tomorrow night.
Sportsbook took what spokesman Larry Hawke said was its biggest
league bet so far this season: $30,000 on NSW minus 4.5 points start
at odds of $1.90. SportsTAB took a $10,000 handicap bet at the same
price.
Both agencies brought the Blues' handicap odds in to $1.85, with the
Maroons out to $1.95.

Ryles scoffs at healthy preparation
By Steve Mascord
NSW fans, if you see Jason Ryles tucking into fish and chips at a
Coogee milk bar late tomorrow afternoon, don't fret. He's done it
before.
The Blues prop first hit upon his unique pre-game ritual two Fridays
ago, when he arrived in Newcastle for St George Illawarra's game
against the Knights, nursing a sore shoulder from Origin I.
"I was definitely not playing so me and Timmo [Blues five-eighth
Shaun Timmins] were up the mall, eating fish and chips, thinking we
had the night off," Ryles said. "I went to the movies the night
before and I was into the M&Ms and the chips."
The story goes that Ryles and Timmins then wandered back to the
Dragons' hotel, where they met club doctor Martin Raftery.
"But 20 minutes before the bus went, the doc came and had a look at
my shoulder because he'd only just got there," Ryles said.
"He put a needle in it, in my room, to see if it would deaden it. It
did. He said, 'There's no chance of you injuring it further unless
you do exactly what you've done before, which is highly unlikely'."
Ryles played in the round-14 game, famously lost on the bell when
Newcastle captain Andrew Johns landed a soaring sideline conversion.
The 24-year-old played strongly just 48 hours after turning out at
Suncorp Stadium for the Blues and is one of two or three NSW players
who'll need further painkilling injections tomorrow night.
"I'll have to needle it for a while," he said. "It gets sore but once
you needle it, you forget all about it. The first 10 minutes [against
the Knights], I was probably a bit wary of it because I played at
such short notice, but after that it was sweet."

Perry, Knights poles apart
Newcastle prop Josh Perry is no closer to re-signing with the Knights
despite further negotiations with the club.
Knights football manager Mark Sargent held talks with Perry's agent
on Monday but the two parties are still well apart on the value of
the contract.
Perry is rumoured to be chasing $300,000 a season, a figure the
Knights are balking at.
Newcastle coach Michael Hagan told AAP the club is still hopeful of
signing the 22 year old.
"We're still working towards hopefully resolving that for him to stay
here for the next three years," Hagan said.
"I think we've done what we can do to try and entice him to stay at
this football club, where he's played in a premiership-winning team
and played Origin football.
"That's where we'd like him to stay and we see him being one of the
real good front rowers in the game. "We're desperate for him to stay
and hope that will be the case."

RAIDERS GRAB
JAMIE Marshall cashed in one of Barrow's 'get out of jail free' cards
as a last minute try gave the Raiders a thrilling win over Chorley
Lynx at Craven Park yesterday.
Trailing 14-0 at half-time, there will have been few among the crowd
of 687 willing to bet on the Raiders mounting a spectacular second
half come back.
But that is exactly what Cameron Bell's men did, with first Paul
Jones, then Aussies Andy Henderson and Craig Bower going over the
line before Marshall sealed a memorable win.
It was a great finish to a magnificent afternoon of rugby as, with
the clock ticking down, the scores level at 16-all and all signs
pointing to a drop goal attempt from Tane Manihera, the stand-off
took the ball 20 metres out and charged towards the line.
Chorley's defence was too strong under the posts and Manihera looked
to be going down in the tackle.
But the Maori magician produced a trick Harry Potter himself would
have been proud of, somehow getting the ball out to James King on the
inside right flank.
King saw gaps opening in the Chorley defence and darted through
laying the ball off for Marshall right on the touchline to dive over
in the corner and send the home support wild.

Webcke queries Origin pay
Queensland prop Shane Webcke has questioned whether the players who
take part in the State of Origin are paid enough.
Each player is paid $5,000 per game but Webcke said in his weekly
newspaper column he feels the players may deserve more for their
efforts in the interstate three-match series.
Webcke, who is widely considered as the world's leading prop, said he
considered the players' financial rewards after reading of the
Australian rugby union team's demands of $300,000 per player if the
team wins the Tri-Nations and World Cup this year.
He pointed out that while the Origin series was sold out for the
first time, the players weren't being rewarded.
"The only thing that won't be a record is the players' share of what
has become a very big pie," Webcke wrote in his column for The
Courier-Mail.

Cowboys retain Hannay
North Queensland has re-signed centre Josh Hannay for a further three
seasons.
Hannay, a North Queensland junior, has played 84 first grade games
for the club since making his debut in 1998.
The 23 year old said he was always planning to stay with North
Queensland.
"I feel my football has improved a lot under the present coaching
staff and I want to see it improve even further".
"There are still a number of goals I have set for myself here at the
club, including playing finals football" he said.
Cowboys coach Graham Murray says Hannay's retention was a priority
for the club.

Storm welcomes back veteran pair
Melbourne Storm will welcome back club stalwarts Robbie Kearns and
Danny Williams for Saturday night's National Rugby League clash with
Wests Tigers at Olympic Park.
Williams returns after serving a one-week suspension for striking
while the Storm will sweat on Kearns' availability following game two
of State of Origin on Wednesday night.
With more than 400 first grade games between them, Williams and
Kearns will add valuable experience as Melbourne aims to avoid
slipping out of the top eight for the first time this year.
"I actually thought the boys played quite well last week but we just
couldn't maintain it in the last 20 minutes of the match," Williams
said of the 26-12 loss to the Bulldogs last Sunday.
"It was pretty tough watching from the sidelines but hopefully if
Kearnsey pulls up well from Origin this week we can both get back in
there and turn things around against the Tigers.
"They (Wests) will be pumped up after a big win over the Roosters
last week so we won't be underestimating them at all."

Morley to miss one game
SYDNEY Roosters hitman Adrian Morley will miss his sides' showdown
with Brisbane on Friday night after pleading guilty to a high tackle.
Morley accepted a one-match ban for a grade two careless high tackle
on Wests Tigers prop Corey Pearson in the premiers' 30-22 loss at
Campbelltown Stadium on Sunday.
Had he challenged the judiciary and lost, the Great Britain Test
forward would also have missed the Roosters' local derby against
South Sydney in round 17.
As it is, Morley amassed 198 demerit points, leaving him with 98
carry-over points.
If he's found guilty of even the most minor of offences in future,
Morley will cop another suspension.
Canberra forward Tyran Smith and New Zealand Warriors back rower
Sione Faumuina also pleaded guilty to grade two careless high tackles
today.
Smith received a one-game ban, plus 75 carry-over points, for his
high shot on Warriors hooker Tavita Latu in Canberra's 22-14 loss at
Ericsson Stadium on Sunday.
With the Raiders having the bye this weekend, the former Kiwi
international must sit out Canberra's round 17 clash with Melbourne
at Canberra Stadium.
Faumuina's clean record enabled him to escape suspension despite
pleading guilty to an illegal tackle on Canberra's Alan Tongue.

NRL clarifies dummy-half rule
The NRL will this week send a rule clarification to clubs that will
ensure tries cannot be scored by a 'dummy half' shielding behind
the 'ball-player' and pushing over the line.
Referees' coach Robert Finch yesterday suggested the existing rules
did not provide specific mention of the situation and needed
clarification.
"We don't think the Laws of the Game cover the issue clearly enough,"
he said.
"Under the existing rules as they are written we believe the Wests
Tigers try was indeed a try.
"However, we think going forward that it should be made clear that
attempting to score a try in that manner is simply not in the spirit
of the game."
The clarification being drafted for all clubs will state that scoring
a try
by diving through or into the legs of the player who has played the
ball is not in the spirit of the game because it allows the defending
team no opportunity to affect a tackle.
Clubs will be advised that once the ball is played it becomes general
play. If the player who has played the ball obstructs the defending
side he would be guilty of an offence.

Maroons face hurdle to win Origin
Queensland will have to overcome a 15-year Origin hoodoo to win this
year's State of Origin series.
That's how long it's been since the Maroons came from 1-0 down to win
rugby league's Holy Grail.
Queensland will also have to overcome a woeful record of five losses
and a draw in six matches at Telstra Stadium, where the Blues have
outscored the Maroons on average 24 to 11 (148 to 70pts).
Since Origin switched to a best-of-three-series in 1982, the state
winning the first game has captured the title 16 times with two of
those series - in 1999 and 2002 - ending in controversial draws.
Coming from 1-0 down has only been achieved three times, twice by
Queensland, in 1982 and 1987, and by the Blues in 1994.
While Queensland has been able to keep four series alive over the
years after dropping the opening game, they haven't gone on to win
the decider since 1987.
