RLCM 'Everyday' Coaching Quote for Wednesday

"Everyday a player does not practice, is a day longer it takes to get to
the top." - Arnold Palmer

SPORTS PERFORMER
An affordable Video Analysis System targeted to the innovative clubs,
innovative schools and innovative coaches that do not have the big budget,
but still want to be at the forefront of their sport and the latest in
sports technology.

Priced at AUS$2500.00

The SPORTS PERFORMER will isolate - statistics, players, plays, events or
whatever is required to record.

One team isolates and measures 'Dominance' though its video analysis. What
else can an innovative coach measure to gain an edge?.

For further information send a e-mail to:
mailto:analysis@... your enquiry will be registered.

SPORT PERFORMER - Analysis systems are the new age technology for sporting
teams and for coaches the world over.

Successful clubs and coaches have been using analysis systems for many
years either by purchasing expensive systems or by having information
supplied through an IT analysis consultant.

Innovative coaches gain the edge with their in-depth knowledge of
opposition players' body movements - their strengths, weaknesses and
style, and of the team's defence patterns and attacking strategies.

They build statistics and, through isolating their own players'
performances, they can review techniques and have them available for
mid game or immediate post game analysis.

The cost for studious coaches or clubs, who are not in the
professional bracket, to have access to an analysis system has always
been too prohibitive.

So do you think the SPORT PERFORMER, an affordable Video Data System
priced at AUS$2,500.00, is worth an enquiry?

The SPORT PERFORMER has been developed by Rugby League people for
coaches and clubs worldwide.

The orders and the indications of further sales from several high profile
rugby league organisations who saw the Sports Performer demonstration at
the recent Telstra Football Expo in Sydney was pleasing for the developers.

The SPORT PERFORMER software will be demonstrated on the Gold Coast next
week and further sales are expected.

NRL Club News with the SMH - Wednesday
Posted Tuesday, June 17, 2003 by <mailto:rlcm@...>rlcm57

By Steve Mascord:

CANBERRA

An apparent gaffe from newly re-signed Canberra centre Phil Graham is to
prompt an informal investigation by the NRL. In announcing he had signed a
contract understood to be valued at $700,000 over three years, Graham was
quoted in a club media release saying: "There were some offers from other
NRL clubs." The only problem is, Graham never had permission to talk to
other clubs and any rival team that made an offer to him would have been in
breach of anti-tampering rules. "It's puzzling, to say the least," said NRL
chief executive David Gallop. "We might make a few calls tomorrow." Raiders
chief executive Simon Hawkins said he would welcome inquiries. "Maybe
they'd like to speak to Phil, I don't know," he said. Graham's agent, Jim
Banaghan, commented: "There were no offers. There was immense interest."

BULLDOGS

Steve Reardon and Tony Grimaldi will replace Queensland forwards Steve
Price and Travis Norton, with Willie Mason shifting to the front row for
Sunday's game against Melbourne. Glenn Hall replaces Glen Hughes (calf) on
the bench.

CRONULLA

Cronulla have turned to Andrew Dalallana, a 21-year-old local, to replace
injured halfback Brett Kimmorley against Manly on Saturday night. Forward
Don Tweddle gets a call-up after his three tries in premier league last
weekend.

MANLY

Luke Dorn (groin) returns to take on Cronulla from halfback, forcing Ben
Walker to five-eighth and Luke Williamson into the forwards.

MELBOURNE

Nathan Friend has been called onto the bench for Sunday's encounter with
the Bulldogs, replacing Danny Williams, who was suspended for one week for
striking.

NEWCASTLE

With five players on Origin duty, the Knights welcome back second-rower
Steve Simpson (kidneys) and fullback Robbie O'Davis (knee), while prop Matt
Jobson has been named despite a shoulder problem. NSW under-19s rep Todd
Lowrie is part of a five-man bench, as is the experienced Tim Maddison.
Despite being short-handed, the Knights have plenty of representative
experience with O'Davis, Simpson, Mark Hughes, Adam MacDougall and Daniel
Abraham.

NORTH QUEENSLAND

Chris Muckert will appear before the tribunal by video link tonight after
deciding to contest a dangerous-throw charge. Junior representative star
Aaron Morgan makes his debut against Parramatta on Saturday night after
being travelling emergency last weekend. Ty Williams moves to fullback for
Origin recruit Matt Bowen, Neil Sweeney replaces Queensland's Matt Sing,
David Myles moves to the centres, with Shane Muspratt going to five-eighth.

PARRAMATTA

The good news: fullback Luke Burt (shoulder) and second-rower Nathan
Hindmarsh (ankle) return from long-term injuries against North Queensland
on Saturday night, and prop Michael Vella is back from a troublesome
abdominal strain. The bad news: fullback Brett Hodgson is still sidelined
by an ankle complaint.

PENRITH

With Scott Sattler on Origin duty, and Ben Ross (eye) and Shane Rodney
(tailbone) injured, coach John Lang has promoted Shane Elford, Martin Lang,
Peter Lewis and Frank Prichard for Friday night's game against Newcastle.

SOUTH SYDNEY

Goal-kicking second-rower Justin Smith returns to Souths' line-up for
Saturday night's game against St George Illawarra, replacing NSW Origin
recruit Bryan Fletcher. Also back from injury is halfback Willie Peters,
but Shane Walker has retained the No.7 jersey.

ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA

Dragons captain Lance Thompson will play against South Sydney on Saturday
night with two fractures in his cheekbone. Doctors have told him the
fractures are stable and there is no danger involved. Ian Donnelly replaces
NSW prop Jason Ryles and Chris Leikvoll comes into the squad for fellow
Blue Luke Bailey.

SYDNEY ROOSTERS

Fullback Henari Veratau, centre Lelea Paea, winger Eric Grothe, lock Chad
Robinson, second-rower Ned Catic and hooker Stuart Webb are the
replacements for the Roosters' Origin brigade ahead of Sunday's
Campbelltown Stadium appointment with Wests Tigers.

WARRIORS

Prop Richard Villasanti is back in the Warriors starting side for Sunday's
tussle with Canberra, forcing Mark Tookey back to the bench. There's also a
change in the second row, Sione Faumuina replacing Wairangi Koopu. Tevita
Latu again deputises for the injured P. J. Marsh at hooker.

WESTS TIGERS

The addition of Joel Caine to the bench is the only change to coach Tim
Sheens's side for Sunday's clash with premiers Sydney Roosters. No sign of
Luke O'Donnell, due back from suspension. He is expected to play premier
league.

Warriors' coach dishes out rewards, punishment after loss
Posted Tuesday, June 17, 2003 by <mailto:rlcm@...>rlcm57

By PETER JESSUP: Sione Faumuina will get a start for the Warriors against
Canberra at Ericsson Stadium on Sunday, replacing Mark Tookey who has been
relegated to the bench.

The changes reflect effort and return in the loss against Parramatta last
weekend.

Of Faumuina, coach Daniel Anderson said: "You can only knock on the door so
long ... He has been pretty effective for us for several weeks now, and
deserves a start."

Of Tookey, Anderson said: "He hasn't performed up to the standard he set
last year. Maybe he's been a little bit comfortable in his position."

Anderson blamed the Warriors' inconsistency this season on players' not
maintaining their individual standards.

"It's the same for Tooks as it was for John Carlaw and Lance Hohaia
[replaced the previous week].

"They set the bar for their performance last season. They haven't matched
it, and that's why the team can't compete at the same level."

Tavita Latu comes in for P.J. Marsh, who must wear a neck brace all week
and is unable to train.

That move was expected, as Marsh would have been in Queensland's State of
Origin camp if fit.

Latu, 21, is smart from dummy-half. The Warriors have worked on his ball
security since his first game, against Cronulla two weeks ago.

He did enough then prompt the club to step up his contract from that of
development player, and this week he signed to the end of next year.

This Canberra game is a must-win - more so than was last weekend's game. As
the season continues, the Warriors must beat the other top-eight teams they
face to gain the two points and deny them to others.

Anderson said they needed to become more desperate.

Fletcher admits life in the red and green will make him a better Blue
Posted Tuesday, June 17, 2003 by <mailto:rlcm@...>rlcm57

By Alex Brown; The theory: A footballer must play at a successful club,
preferably a premiership contender, to attract the attention of State of
Origin selectors.

The exception: Bryan Fletcher.

Barely a day after earning his 13th NSW call-up - his first since joining
the embattled Rabbitohs - Fletcher admitted to feeling an additional sense
of pride.

Already this season the South Sydney skipper has watched one-time teammate
Chris Walker leave the club in preference for the Roosters, supposedly to
improve his representative chances.

But having made the opposite move over the off-season, switching from the
defending premiers to lead the Rabbitohs, Fletcher now feels that myth has
been dispelled.

"You always hear that selectors look at sides going well, and that's the
way it's always been," Fletcher said.

"I'm just grateful they looked at my form instead of the way [Souths] have
been going.

"Obviously, I've proved that theory wrong. Chris [Walker] had his own
reasons for leaving, but I can't comment on that. I guess I've just shown
that you can still play on a team that's not going so well and make it.

"I'm probably more proud making it this year because of that. When I first
came over to Souths, people were saying I just did it for the money, so I
had a point to prove."

On the surface, Fletcher appears unchanged from the player who lifted the
NRL premiership trophy last season, the ball-playing back-rower with a
dozen Blues caps

Bozo's Origin warning
Posted Tuesday, June 17, 2003 by <mailto:rlcm@...>rlcm57

By Peter Frilingos: FORMER Australian coach Bob Fulton has gone public with
reasons why NSW should fear Queensland in next week's return State of
Origin game at Telstra Stadium.

Fulton, a NSW selector, says the perception that the Blues have only to
turn up to clinch the series is fatally flawed.

The Blues won the first game 25-12 at Suncorp Stadium last week, convincing
many NSW fans that the Maroons would not be able to recover and keep the
series alive.

Queensland made several changes to its line-up, including the addition of
speedster Matt Bowen on the bench and Bulldogs Steve Price and Travis
Norton in the starting side.

"NSW supporters shouldn't think this game is a foregone conclusion," Fulton
said.

"The coach and the players certainly don't think it is.

"The players involved in last year's series are fully aware of the
ramifications of winning that first game 32-4.

"It should not be forgotten they won that game by a bigger score than last
week's opening game.

"Although the circumstances are different in that Queensland went back home
to play the second game there are many other players involved.

Fiery Crocker to play it cool
Posted Tuesday, June 17, 2003 by <mailto:rlcm@...>rlcm57

Steve Ricketts: FIERY Sydney Roosters forward Mick Crocker yesterday vowed
not to ruin his Queensland State of Origin debut at Sydney's Telstra
Stadium next Wednesday through foul play.

Crocker, 22, who told NSW rival and Roosters teammate Craig Wing to make
sure he wore headgear for the match, said he was ready to adapt to the
discipline of Origin football which has seen just one player sent off for
foul play in 24 years Queensland's Craig Greenhill in 1996.

Since his first grade debut for the Roosters in 2001, Crocker has been
charged twice for striking and once for a careless high tackle, pleading
guilty each time. He also has conceded penalties on a regular basis for
incidents where he has "sailed close to the wind".

His latest suspension forced him out of Sunday's match against the Cowboys
but it did not prevent the Queensland selectors from naming him at hooker
for the return Origin clash with P J Marsh out with a neck injury.

Penrith lose forward duo
Posted Tuesday, June 17, 2003 by <mailto:rlcm@...>rlcm57

Penrith's dream run is officially over, with the club's eight game National
Rugby League winning streak coming to an end and forwards Ben Ross and
Shane Rodney facing extended stints on the sideline.

Ross needs an operation after suffering an eye injury in the club's loss to
Melbourne on Saturday night while Rodney has bone damage to his lower back.

"He has a detached retina and will require an operation that will keep him
out for six to eight weeks," Penrith chief executive Shane Richardson said
today about former St George Illawarra prop Ross.

"It's really awful news for the young blokes."

Brett Howland, who damaged a hamstring in the dying stages of the game,
will be out for at least three weeks.

Sharks stun young gun half
Posted Tuesday, June 17, 2003 by <mailto:rlcm@...>rlcm57

Cronulla coach Chris Anderson has employed a 20-year-old real estate agent
to take charge of Brookvale Oval on Saturday.

Unknown Andrew Dallalana said he was still stunned after being plucked from
obscurity to replace injured Test halfback Brett Kimmorley for the Sharks'
crucial National Rugby League clash with Manly.

Dallalana will make his first grade debut after Kimmorley was ruled out for
a month with a broken jaw.

Cronulla fullback David Peachey will resume the captaincy in Kimmorley's
absence, but all eyes will be on Dallalana, who will inherit the role of
chief playmaker.

But, despite Sharks general manager Steve Rogers labelling the 20-year-old
Cronulla Caringbah junior as "a bit of a child prodigy", Dallalana said he
was no Kimmorley and was simply hoping to provide the Sharks with "a bit of
youth and enthusiasm".

"He (Kimmorley) is an Australian player. He's played Tests and Origins and
I've got big boots to fill," Dallalana said.

"I'm just there to fill in and try to make a name for myself.

"The team's been doing pretty well. Hopefully I can have a good kicking
game and the team can feed off that."

Dallalana, 80kg and 173cm, is in his fifth year with the Sharks but wasn't
considered among the club's best 25 players at the start of the season.

He still works fulltime in real estate and said he couldn't believe it when
Anderson told him at Saturday morning's recovery session to make sure he
was at training on Tuesday.

"That was when I realised I might get a run in first grade," Dallalana said.

"It hasn't really hit yet, so the nerves aren't there yet. I've only had
one training run, so I'm enjoying it."

Morgan to make first grade debut against Parramatta
Posted Tuesday, June 17, 2003 by <mailto:rlcm@...>rlcm57

By CHRIS ROOTS: BOWEN'S Aaron Morgan will complete a footballing dream when
he runs out for the North Queensland Cowboys against Parramatta in Sydney
on Saturday night.

Morgan was playing D-grade in the Brisbane club competition just four years
ago when he followed his girlfriend to Brisbane but quickly worked his way
into the Queensland Cup with Wests.

A Cowboys contract followed for the 24-year-old this season and he was
quickly identified as a future first grader after working hard in the
pre-season.

He was mentioned as a possible for their first trial against Mackay along
with Jaiman Lowe and Leigh McWilliams, who are both regular first graders.

"I played with guys in Brisbane who went on to (NRL) level," Morgan said.
"And those guys getting a regular game for the Cowboys has really driven me
on."

CRUNCH TIME OVER SUPER LEAGUE TV DEAL
Posted Tuesday, June 17, 2003 by <mailto:rlcm@...>rlcm57

By Andy Hampson: The coming week is a crucial one for the Rugby Football
League as they discuss a new television deal for Super League and
international matches.

Their present arrangement with BSkyB expires at the end of the current
season and if reports are to be believed they are willing to offer a
further £53million for five more years.

Such money is not to be sniffed at, especially as it represents a slight
increase on the amount accepted last time.

But it seems that not all clubs are happy with the proposal, with the big
five of St Helens, Bradford, Wigan, Leeds and Hull apparently ready to dig
in and wait for a better offer.

Hull in double swoop
Posted Tuesday, June 17, 2003 by <mailto:rlcm@...>rlcm57

HULL have signed Bradford three quarter Alex Wilkinson and Leeds stand off
Peter Lupton on loan to help with their continuing injury crisis.

Both players could make their Hull debuts against Castleford Tigers on
Friday night.

Wilkinson has already had similar loan spells with London Broncos, last
season, and Huddersfield Giants this year.

Lupton has been on the books at the Broncos and went on loan to Whitehaven
last season. He also played for the Super League side in the recent
under-21s representative match, scoring a second half try.

the salary cap regulations will make their appeals on July 14th.

Halifax, Hull FC and St Helens have had two points deducted for breaking
the regulations.

club's salary cap, relevant income or an upper limit of £1.8million.

St Helens say their appeal will be heard at 10.00am. They will be followed
Hull FC at 1.00pm and then Halifax at 4.00pm.

The three-man RFL Advisory Panel will be chaired by His Honour Judge James

Saints sign New Zealand international Talau
Posted Tuesday, June 17, 2003 by <mailto:rlcm@...>rlcm57

St Helens have confirmed the signing of New Zealand international centre
Willie Talau.

The 27-year-old will join the Saints in 2004 from Canterbury Bulldogs on a
three-year contract.

Saints coach Ian Millward said: '''Whenever you go into the market place
you try to get the best quality and he's the pick of the bunch.

''He and (Nigel) Vagana were the top two centres in the NRL last season and
it's a huge coup for the game and for the club that he wanted to come here.

''He's had offers from other NRL and Super League clubs but he's excited
about coming here to St Helens.''

Talau said: ''I wanted to go to a high-profile Super League side and that's
why Saints were such an attractive option. I've seen plenty of their games
on TV and their style of play should suit me well.''

Saints chief executive Sean McGuire said: "We are delighted to sign a
player of Willie's calibre and we feel he will give us many years of service.

''As with the signing of Keith Mason last month, this is another part of
the rebuilding programme we have been talking about at the club.''

Trainers a blight on game
Posted Tuesday, June 17, 2003 by <mailto:rlcm@...>rlcm57

By Ray Chesterton: DURING a period of almost deliriously wonderful rugby
league, starting with the Origin game and carrying through the excitment of
last weekend's round, it seems ungrateful to carp.

But bloody trainers who are on the field more than players are driving me
crazy.

They are a distracting nuisance, against the spirit of the game and
undermine spectator confidence in a club coach devising tactics easily
absorbed by players.

Unless things change, it is likely that this year's Dally M winner will
have spent less time on the field during the season than his club trainer.

Trainers like Ron Palmer at the Roosters and Des Hasler at Manly - along
with lesser profile offenders at other clubs - are never off the field.

They run out in their fluorescent jackets like a spilled packet of M&M's,
not far removed from circus clowns chasing a selzer bottle to spray on each
other.

They dart here, there and everywhere issuing instructions, calling players
into position and organising defences.

I can never work out where the prize for attention deficit disorder should go.

Should it be to the players for having such dismal memory retention that
they would forget their way from the dressing room to the playing area
without a map, let alone a coach's final instructions.

Or should it go to coaches, whose tactics must be so cumbersomely oblique
or haphazard, that they must be constantly reinforced by trainers who also
carry picture cards for slow-thinking players.

NRL operating officer Graham Annesley, says 12 breach notices have been
served this year on clubs whose trainers broke the rules.

Clubs get a warning for the first offence and the $1000 fine for the second
breach generally doubles for each successive violation.

Scotland Summer Conference 2003 - Week 4
Posted Tuesday, June 17, 2003 by <mailto:rlcm@...>rlcm57
Edinburgh Eagles claimed their Grand Final place in Round 4 of the
Conference by defeating a strong Fife Lions outfit at Harley Street on
Saturday by 46-12.

It was the Fife side who took an early lead and had most of the early
possession but it was the title favourites who racked up a 9 try display,
including a brace of tries for Donald
Hughes & Paul Maddison.

Portobello pushed Clyde aside at Cavalry Park by 76-22 to set them up
with a potential ding-dong battle against the Lions next week in
Fife.

The winner of that battle could seal their place in the Grand
Final at Broughton on 5th July.

Glasgow Bulls's season is all but over following their decision to
pull out of Saturday's fixture away to the Borders citing a player
drought.

No TBA loophole for prop Perry
Posted Monday, June 16, 2003 by <mailto:rlcm@...>rlcm57
By Stuart Honeysett: A gentlemen's agreement between the NSWRL and the QRL
has cost Josh Perry his spot in the NSW team for the second State of Origin
match next week.

The Newcastle prop had barely enough time to unpack his bags at the team
hotel in Coogee before he was ruled out through suspension and replaced by
South Sydney captain Bryan Fletcher.

Perry's worst fears were realised yesterday when charged with two offences
from last Friday night's game against St George Illawarra a careless high
tackle on Lance Thompson as well as striking the same player.

The NSW bench player faced a two-week suspension if he chose to fight the
charges and lost, which would have ruled him out of calculations for both
Origin II and the Knights' game against Parramatta. But he will now be
available to play against the Eels after taking the early plea.

"I'm absolutely shattered," Perry said via a statement.

"I had one of the best weeks of my life last week. It's the sort of thing
you play football for, and now I will be watching from the sideline."

It was suggested yesterday the Blues should have replaced Perry in the team
with TBA To Be Announced a ploy used by the Maroons last year to allow Lote
Tuqiri to serve a one-week suspension for Brisbane and still play for his
state.

This would have enabled Perry to serve his one-match suspension for the
Knights against Penrith on Friday night and still play for the Blues next week.

The NRL tried to assist in the matter yesterday by refusing to release the
judiciary charges until both teams had been announced although that still
wouldn't have meant anything if either state had opted for a TBA.

Maroons opt for new mix
Posted Monday, June 16, 2003 by <mailto:rlcm@...>rlcm57
Steve Ricketts: QUEENSLAND has called on "one tough hombre", an
"old-fashioned hooker" and "someone who will throw a bit of fear into the
opposition" as the answer to its State of Origin woes.

Scott Sattler (Penrith), Mick Crocker (Roosters) and Matt Bowen (Cowboys)
are the rookies in Queensland's squad named yesterday for the return Origin
match against NSW at Sydney's Telstra Stadium tomorrow week.

Maroons chairman of selectors Gene Miles is confident the mix of talent is
right this time to square the series after the Blues' 25-12 win in Brisbane
last Wednesday.

Fullback Bowen, one of North Queensland Cowboys' star performers in a 15-14
loss to Sydney Roosters on Sunday, has been named on the Queensland bench
as the possible answer to NSW shock weapon Craig Wing.

"We must counter Wing," Miles said. "That's where the Blues got the upper
hand on us and we want someone in the side who is going to throw a bit of
fear into them whenever he takes the field, similar to what Chris Walker
used to do."

Miles said Bowen could play halfback, five-eighth, wing and fullback with
his ability to fill the latter position allowing Darren Lockyer to move up
into the front line in attack.

Anderson hopes Sharks challenge fine
Posted Monday, June 16, 2003 by <mailto:rlcm@...>rlcm57
Anderson admitted he said "that was a f...... disgrace" but it's understood
the ground manager and referee Lawrence reported the quote was "you are a
f...... disgrace."

Anderson said he hoped the Sharks would challenge the $15,000 fine and
early yesterday said he had not been contacted by anyone from the NRL to
discuss the issue.

"I've never been rung and asked exactly what I said so to go another level
with the fine without getting my side of what happened is ordinary,"
Anderson said. "I think I should have a platform to put my side across."

Later in the day Anderson and Gallop spoke by phone.

"Chris told me he regrets what happened, it was a heat of the moment
thing," Gallop said.

"We understood each other's position and that there was a lot of emotion
around at the time of the incident."

Sharks' chairman Barry Pierce said it was too early to tell whether the
club would challenge the fine.

Origin lifeline for Fletcher
Posted Monday, June 16, 2003 by <mailto:rlcm@...>rlcm57
By Steve Mascord, Brad Walter and AAP

After calling up South Sydney captain Bryan Fletcher last night, NSW
selectors confirmed they were also considering veteran Wests Tigers centre
Terry Hill for Origin II.

Fletcher replaced reserve forward Josh Perry, suspended for one week over
two hits on St George Illawarra's Lance Thompson while playing for
Newcastle last Friday.

On selection day for next Wednesday's clash at Telstra Stadium, it was
Queensland who provided the surprises, with the Sydney Roosters' Michael
Crocker, the Bulldogs' Travis Norton, Penrith's Scott Sattler and North
Queensland's Matt Bowen all receiving call-ups.

Sattler will make his Origin debut at 31 - the same age as Hill, who NSW
chairman of selectors Bob McCarthy confirmed had been mentioned in a meeting.

There are still doubts over Blues second-rower Craig Fitzgibbon (eye
socket), prop Jason Ryles (shoulder) and centre Jamie Lyon (hamstring).

"If Fitzgibbon comes out, we have to find someone else and if Lyon is out,
we don't know what we might do there," McCarthy said. "Terry was mentioned
because he can cover lock forward and he can cover as a back and his form
has been particularly good. Then again, we could put [Michael] De Vere in
the centres and find a winger."

ARE YOU SERIOUS ABOUT RUGBY LEAGUE COACHING, WE ARE!

COACH EDUCATION

* Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies (Coach Education)

* Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Coach Education)

Are you looking for a competitive edge on the opposition? If you are
an elite level coach or an experienced elite athlete this course has
been designed with you in mind.

The Coach Education program at the University of Sydney will build on
your technical expertise by developing your skills in:

* Communicating your ideas clearly to your athletes
* Organising your training sessions for maximum impact
* Giving and receiving feedback
* Using technology as a coaching tool
* Planning dynamic training programs
* Remaining current with coaching trends/issues

Strengths of this course include face-to-face delivery of units of
study and the opportunity for participants to develop networks across
a variety of sports. Units will be lectured by highly respected
academics utilising elite coaches as guest speakers.

I think the content of the course has a lot of merit . . . being able
to communicate with your athletes is of vital importance; as is
preparation of sessions and feedback on performance(Chris Anderson,
Australian Rugby League Coach)

The Graduate Diploma of coach education is an excellent course.
Coaching needs to be recognised as a true profession, and this course
will teach all the core areas of being an elite coach. It is a
comprehensive program to improve coaching(Eddie Jones, National
Coach, Australian Rugby Union)

Coaches must complete six units of study for the Graduate Diploma of
Coach Education and four units of study for Graduate Certificate of
Coach Education.

Units will be delivered to accommodate the winter and summer
schedules of Australian sport.

In 2003, there will be one unit offered in July and three offered
during October -November.

The scheduling for the first unit Teaching Skills for Coaches is as
follows:

Wednesday - July 2 - 6 9.30pm
Saturday - July 5 - 8am 5pm
Wednesday - July 9 - 6 9.30pm
Saturday - July 12 - 8am 5pm

Further information on the course content, structure and scheduling
of units of study can be obtained from Dr Donna OConnor, University
of Sydney on 02/9351 6343 or mailto:d.oconnor@...

The closing date for 2003 enrolments is September 15.

Units of Study

Teaching skills for coaches.

This unit will outline a number of concepts to enhance a coachs
effectiveness and provide a smooth transition from elite player to
elite coach. Content includes organisational skills, teaching
strategies, planning practices, and communication and presentation
skills.

Coaching effectiveness: evaluation.

The ability to evaluate is part of the coaching process. This unit
will examine such questions as: was the coaching effective in
achieving its purpose(s)? what changes can be made to improve the
quality of coaching? The coach has the responsibility of analyzing
training sessions. This unit will emphasise critical reflection and
the development of skills and innovative techniques for assessing
coaching effectiveness.

Sport and technology.

This unit will deal with the use of technology in sport and introduce
coaches to some of the most applicable coaching tools and
technologies. Many new technologies can do what in the past could not
be achieved, can show you what the human eye cannot see, and in many
cases provide support for coachesintuition. Many of these
tools/software programs can be incorporated into everyday training,
as well as provide valuable information in preparation for training.
Most technologies discussed will be portable or laptop based systems.
Examples include game analysis, skill analysis and programming
software as well as the use of technology to enhance remote coaching.

Planning coaching programs.

How effectively coaching sessions are planned and implemented
influences the outcomes of coaching programs. This course will
critically examine the processes, models, research findings and
strategies relating to periodisation, outcome based training,
concurrent training, specific training sessions, goal setting and
scheduling the extra activities/responsibilities in to a training
week. In this approach sport science and sport specific training and
competition activities will be fully integrated and sequenced to
provide for optimum performance.

Contemporary issues in coaching.

This unit discusses contemporary issues pertinent to todays coach.
Topics include leadership development, the dilemma of drugs and
ergogenic aids, the development of high performance teams and the
various roles of a head coach. Relevant issues will be explored
throughout this unit.

Elite athlete development.

This course is designed to investigate the techniques and procedures
involved in athlete development. Specifically this focuses on
identifying talent and appropriate recruitment systems, discussing
what makes an athlete successful, and providing for a smooth
transition from junior to senior ranks.

Ethical and legal issues in coaching.

The role of the coach has changed drastically in the last few
decades. There are many reasons for this. Two major issues which have
impacted on this include ethical and legal issues. This unit will
examine topics such as child protection, inappropriate behaviour,
violence, duty of care, litigation, discrimination and the need for
coaches to have the skills of forseeability.

Applying sport science to coaching.

You do not have to be an expert in sport science but an understanding
of the fundamentals of sport science will add to the effectiveness of
your coaching. The challenge for the coach is to develop an
integrated model with the right mix of training activities,
techniques and sport science support to optimize performance.

Disciplines covered include sports psychology, exercise physiology,
recovery & regeneration, biomechanics, nutrition, skill acquisition
and testing.

ENGLISH COACH REQUIRES POSITION IN AUSTRALIA

I am a 33 year old married man with two rugby league fanatic sons aged 12 &
14.

I am a qualified senior rugby league coach currently coaching Thornhill
Trojans ARLFC in the Premier Division of the National Conference League,
the most elite amateur league in the UK.

Last season I helped the team advance up the league by four places. and
also reached the 3rd level of the Challenge Cup going out of the
competition to professional opposition.

I have coached at junior, youth and senior level for 12 years and I have
also coached at representative level with Yorkshire U18.

I have a degree in Sports Psychology, gained at Newcastle University, and I
have excellent player/coach communication skills. during the past season I
have introduced both a solid defensive pattern and developed our attacking
flair.

I am looking for a position at any level of rugby league in Australia, but
preferably I would like to coach senior grade if possible.

My family and I are keen to re-locate to Australia if the opportunity arose.

I currently work as a community centre manager, I have also had 6 years
industrial sales experience and I am also a qualified MIG & MMa welder,
although I may be a little rusty!

My wife currently works as a school administration worker.
