A consortium bidding to have a team from the tourist strip back in the competition after a five-year absence met NRL executives for three hours yesterday, seeking a stand-alone licence in 2006. And today it moves on to "plan B" - trying to coax one of the eight Sydney clubs to move up there. Syndicate head Paul Broughton said the identities of two clubs which had accepted invitations to a talk today were protected by confidentiality clauses. But Manly chief executive Ian Thomson admitted: "Yes, we're going to go. "The Manly board has never discussed moving to the Gold Coast and we have no plans to. "But I have known [Gold Coast bid accountant] Michael Searle for 20 years and we are supporters of rugby league on the Gold Coast. Out of respect for the people involved and to show our support for what they are trying to do, we thought the least we could do was go along and learn more about their proposal." St George Illawarra's Peter Doust, Wests Tigers' Steve Noyce, Penrith's Shane Richardson, Cronulla's Steve Rogers, South Sydney's David Tapp, Parramatta's Denis Fitzgerald, Sydney's Bernie Gurr and the Bulldogs' Steve Mortimer all denied their clubs would be represented. The 15 NRL chief executives agreed this month that expansion was not on their agenda, with junior development to take preference. But Broughton said: "It doesn't matter what is on their agenda because in 2006 all their licences are up for renewal. This weekend the Broncos move back over the [Brisbane] river and that opens up even more possibilities for the Gold Coast." NRL chief executive David Gallop said: "We certainly wouldn't be forcing anyone to move. We'd be receptive to it if a club came to us and said they wanted to move." SMH ____________________________________________ Blacklock not ready for top grade: Brown St George Illawarra coach Nathan Brown said Nathan Blacklock needed to regain his match fitness before being considered for selection in the National Rugby League. Brown named Blacklock in the Dragons' premier league side to meet Balmain on Sunday despite his successful return to rugby league on the weekend following a one-year stint in rugby union for Super 12 side NSW Waratahs. Blacklock, 27, scored a seventh minute try against South Sydney in a premier league match at the SCG on Sunday. But Brown has stuck with the same first grade squad which beat the Rabbitohs 18-16 for Sunday's National Rugby League clash with North Queensland at Oki Jubilee Stadium. "The other two guys (wingers Amos Roberts and Hassan Saleh) are doing a good job," said Brown. "But it would be good to see him (Blacklock) play another game or two just to find a spot even though he did pretty well the other day for a guy who hasn't played for 18 months. "Another game or two and he'll come back into a bit of match shape and he'll be fine." Blacklock scored a record 27 tries for the Dragons in the 2001 season. Sportswatch ____________________________________________ Maroons odds trimmed by blue By Stuart Honeysett: THE campaign by NSW coach Phil Gould to have the Blues recognised as underdogs for State of Origin appears to have paid off, with Queensland being installed as warm favourite to win this year's series. It is the first time the Maroons have been favourite since sports betting was legalised a decade ago. Centrebet posted their market for the Origin series last night, while SportsTAB will release their odds after both teams are named on Monday for the opening game at Suncorp Stadium on June 11. Centrebet have the Maroons at $1.60 to win Origin I and $1.55 to claim the series. NSW are at $2.25 for the first game and $2.30 to lift the shield. Things changed markedly for Queensland after they were thumped 3-0 in the 2000 series, losing game three 58-12. Wayne Bennett returned to coach the side in 2001 and they won the series 2-1 when Allan Langer returned from England for the deciding match. And they retained the trophy last year when the series finished in a 1-all tie after match three finished in a draw. Centrebet spokesman Gerard Daffy said several factors had been taken into account when framing the market, including Queensland hosting two games at the rebuilt Lang Park and Gould's assertion the Maroons are the form players in the NRL. Read more The Australian ____________________________________________ Gold Coast tries to lure NRL club The consortium pushing for a National Rugby League team on the Gold Coast will meet with officials from a Sydney club in the next 48 hours to discuss relocating to the tourist strip. And at least one other Sydney club has also indicated its willingness to sit down with the consortium to discuss the benefits of moving to the Gold Coast. The delegation met with the NRL to present its case for having its own licence and left believing it was only a matter of time before one was granted. A team could be based at the Coast sooner rather than later following recent developments. The consortium sent eight Sydney clubs a letter offering them the chance to relocate and it's understood at least two have expressed interest. The clubs have done so on the condition of anonymity. Consortium member Paul Broughton said even if they were unable to convince an existing club to relocate, they left the meeting confident the Gold Coast would have a licence by 2006. Broughton said NRL chief executive David Gallop indicated the Gold Coast would again have its own team. "It was a two-pronged presentation based on a new licence and relocation," Broughton said. "The primary goal was a new licence. "There's absolute reason for optimism. David Gallop said it's not a case of if, it's a case of when. "We thought we were well received and we're looking forward to 2006." Gallop conceded the NRL had been impressed with the Gold Coast's credentials. "We would love to have a team on the Central Coast and Gold Coast, but we can't put a time frame on that," Gallop said. Broughton said the Sydney clubs were offered the chance to relocate on the basis that for the first three years they would play seven or eight games on the Coast and four or five in Sydney. After that the franchise would be based full-time on the Coast. Yahoo Sports ____________________________________________ Dragons to fire By ADAM GARDINI: COWBOYS coach Graham Murray believes the St George Illawarra Dragons will have no problems dealing with the absence of key players Trent Barrett and Mark Gasnier ahead of this Sunday's National Rugby League match at Oki Jubilee Stadium. Although the Dragons struggled without the representative duo for the first time in a lacklustre 18-16 victory over Souths last Sunday, Murray suggested they will adjust to injury the way that every other NRL team does. "Everyone knows that they are two of their best players," Murray said. "I had Gasnier in the City side and he was exceptional and Barrett -- we all know what a good player he is. "But we all go through those stages of having good players out and you've just got to deal with it the best way you can and I'm sure they will." Murray has opted to stick with a winning formula after naming an unchanged Cowboys line-up for this Sunday's clash. He maintained there was no reason to change things around due to the team's good form over the past two weeks. "We are in reasonable form apart from our first half against the Tigers which was a fairly scrappy affair," he said. "I thought the second half against the Tigers and last week they did a lot of good things so there's no reason to change the teams. "Successful sides of the competition have a bit of luck with injuries and suspensions and things like that and you can nearly settle on a combination (each week). "Hopefully it's a winning combination, which we are at the moment, so it's always good to keep those blokes together week in and week out if injuries permit." Roarty is believed to have penned a two-year deal with the Giants, and is set to arrive in this country on Monday. That could see him included in their Super League Round 13 clash with Halifax at the McAlpine Stadium. The back rower scored a try in Melbourne Storm's Australian Grand Final in 1999. Total RL ____________________________________________ STADIUM MOVE THE KEY - McRAE By Andy Hampson: Hull coach Shaun McRae believes his club's move to the Kingston Communications Stadium has allowed them to move on to the next level this season. McRae's side have established themselves in the top half of Super League in recent seasons, and performances over the past couple of weeks have marked them out as serious title contenders. The Airlie Birds claimed a point with a battling draw at then leaders Leeds 10 days ago but produced an even better display to crush champions St Helens last night. A noisy crowd of 12,490 looked on as Hull ran in six tries to overwhelm Saints 30-6 on their first visit to the ground, and McRae believes the new arena has had a big impact. McRae, whose side are just two points off the top, said: "I guess what we're trying to do is make some impact on that big four, and probably with 11 games played people will say we've done that. "The next home game is a biggie against Bradford. We all know about the Bradford fans and what they're like, and I think we've got to be looking for a record crowd here. Read more Sporting Life ____________________________________________ Warriors aim to end Panthers' record-threatening winning streak By PETER JESSUP: The Panthers will have blockbusting prop Martin Lang back in the frontline against the Warriors on Saturday night. The 188cm, 110kg Lang has been out since off-season surgery to repair an ankle problem that was followed by an associated knee tear. He played off the bench in both halves against Wests last Sunday and is sure to be elevated to the starting line-up by his dad John, the Panthers coach. He joins a Penrith hyped at the prospect of a record-setting win on their home patch. Since they entered the competition in 1967 the Panthers have won six consecutive games on six occasions, the last in 2000, and they are looking to break the barrier against the Warriors, who they've already beaten twice this season. The pre-season, 28-20 win in Invercargill and a 28-14 at Ericsson Stadium, have spurred expectation and a big crowd is expected, with big expectation of Lang in particular. Warriors coach Daniel Anderson has replaced Awen Guttenbeil, who has a shin injury, with Wairangi Koopu and brought Evarn Tuimavave onto the bench in the only change to the side beaten by Canberra. Read more NZ Herald ____________________________________________ St Helens conquered by rampant Hull St Helens coach Ian Millward bemoaned his side's inconsistent start to the season as they slumped 30-6 at Hull. The Super League champions were completely overwhelmed as they slumped to their fifth defeat of the campaign at the Kingston Communications Stadium. By contrast Hull were outstanding, underlining their emergence as genuine title challengers with six tries and a fearsome defensive display in front of a noisy 12,490 crowd. Millward, whose side are now in an unfamiliar sixth position, said: "We have played as good as anyone - going into this game we had the best attacking record and the best defensive record. "From a skill point of view we are right on the mark but from a mental point of view we are inconsistent. "Hull played very well but we came up with errors and put pressure on ourselves. "But they are a strong team. A lot has been made of their injuries but but if you look at their team 14 of the 17 would be on the park. "They are above us in the points table and were rewarded for all the effort they put in last week against Leeds." Ananova ____________________________________________ London Broncos star given 12-month ban London Broncos' Dominic Peters has been suspended from playing for 12 months by the Rugby Football League after he tested positive for a banned substance. The 24-year-old wing was found guilty of providing a urine sample containing stanozolol, which is contrary to the RFL's doping control regulations. The RFL's doping control panel in Leeds also suspended Martin Moana for 28 days after the Halifax Blue Sox player provided a urine sample containing ephedrine - another banned substance. A third, unnamed, player was also charged with providing a sample containing a banned substance. The independent panel, after taking into consideration the mitigating evidence presented at the hearing, meted out a 12-month suspended sentence and fined the player £2,500. Acton-born Peters is the first 'home grown' talent to play at the top level for London Broncos. He made an impression as a second rower and won a debut for the club five years ago, scoring nine tries over the next two seasons. He continued to excel as a winger and became known as 'The Acton Flyer' - but faded from the first team frame in 2001 and only scored one try in 16 appearances last season. But he continues to be held in high regard by the club and hopes were high he could force his way back into form - particularly after a try- scoring appearance in the 42-12 defeat of Oldham in the Tetley's Challenge Cup fourth round clash at Griffin Park in February. Ananova ____________________________________________ Fixture Change for Warrington Warrington Wolves' fixture against Leeds Rhinos in Round 17 at Headingley has been moved from the Friday 4th July, kick off 8.00pm to Sunday 6th July, kick off 3.00pm. The reason for the change is due to the Origin fixture taking place on the Wednesday 2nd July. Head Coach Paul Cullen commented, "I have requested the fixture change to support the Origin fixture on Wednesday night and not to gain an unfair advantage." Crouthers On Loan. Kevin Crouthers, 27 has gone on loan to NFP side Dewsbury Rams for four weeks. Crouthers signed from Dewsbury Rams prior to the Super League VII campaign, during Super League Vii Kevin also went on loan to Dewsbury Rams and Chorley Lynx season. Kevin has featured in two first team games this season before suffering a hamstring injury in Round 7 against St. Helens. Sid Domic is doubtful for this weekend's clash against St. Helens after being carried from the field in Saturday's clash against Castleford. Sid suffered an ankle injury, which was strapped to allow him to return to the field during the game. He awaits a x-ray and will be subject to a late fitness test. Warrington Wolves, Chief Executive Andy Gatcliffe was invited to the House of Commons this week to present an update of the Club's new stadium development and their work in the community. Warrington's Community Development team have retained the Best Community Award Programme in Super League for the 3rd year in a row. Andy Gatcliffe commented, "It was an honour for myself, the Club and also for the Borough of Warrington to be invited to attend the All Parliamentary Rugby League Group meeting. To be given the opportunity to update both MPs and Peers on the success of the Clubs work especially in regard to the wide ranging Community programme undertaken really does raise the profile of Warrington Wolves on a national basis. Warrington ____________________________________________ KIDS TAKE OVER AT CENTURIONS Although the first team had the Bank Holiday Weekend off, St Albans Centurions were still in action when their newly-formed Under-16 team pulled off another fine victory, winning 30-20 at Greenwich Admirals. The side, which was only formed this month by former first team skipper Lee Parkin, has done so well in its two matches they hammered Essex Eels in their debut match a week earlier that scouts from Super League club London Broncos are taking a very keen interest in several players. The victory came with two breakaway tries from Oliver Fountain, who was almost unstoppable with the ball and fearless in defence, one from winger Daniel Lipman, another from captain David Nelmes, who also kicked three conversions. It was another good win, especially with our first choice props unavailable, said Parkin, whose Rickmansworth School side reached the National Rugby League Schools Cup semi-finals earlier this year. Greenwich were a good, well-drilled side with many South of England rep players and a few Broncos Under-16s so it was always going to be cracking encounter. Alex Martin moved up from second row and did a sterling job. I lost count of the number hit ups and tackles he made - he was easily man of the match. Parkin was also delighted with the debuts of the Ravalia twins - Rishi and Rajiv - the Centurionsversion of the Paul Brothers (Henry and Robbie), Chris "Chubbs" Michalaks debut performance at hooker and Tom Matthewsdisplay, playing out of position at full back. Also impressive were Ross "Buzz" McCann, who distributed well from dummy half, and Jack Mayling who marshalled his forwards well. We gave away some silly penalties which allowed Greenwich to score some well taken scores and they battled hard, admitted Yorkshireman Parkin, who was on the books of Wakefield Trinity as a junior. I can honestly say, that is the best game of junior rugby league I have seen in the south of England. It looks like being a very healthy future for the Centurions with some real quality players coming through, some with several years experience of rugby league. Seven different Hertfordshire schools were represented on Saturday with many of Parkins National Cup semi-finalists Rickmansworth School joined by boys from Beaumont, Parmiters, Watford Grammar, St Columbas College and, most notably given that the Centurions play at Old AlbaniansWoollams ground, St Albans School. Many of the Young Centurions are rugby union players who are trying their hand at League and improving their handling skills, tackling technique and fitness levels in the off-season. Union clubs Fullerians, London Welsh, Saracens, Camelot and Cheshunt all have players learning League with the Centurions. Parkin is now working with RFL regional development officer Caro Wild and England Under-16s coach Dave Rotherham to stage a City v Country match at Woollams, featuring the best Young Centurions, London Broncos Under-16s, and any other highly talented players in London and the Home Counties. It would be a trial game for the Foundation Academy. He is also seeking sponsorship for the Centurionsjunior section interested parties should contact Lee on 07736313345, as should any potential new players for the Young Centurions. Rishi Ravalia THE CENTURIONS first team head up to the Midlands on Saturday hoping to add a second win to last weeks victory over Huddersfield Underbank Rangers. But they face a Coventry Bears team that has won two of its three National League Three matches so far and is reigning RL Conference champions. The Centurions will take heart not only from their tough victory over Underbakj at Woollams but also the fact that Coventry struggled to beat South London, 20-14, in their last home game. The Bears, led by Ireland international Alan Robinson, are part of the Coventry Rugby Club which started life as a League club before switching to Union. ST ALBANS CENTURIONS are looking for sponsors for their remaining home games, as well as individual player sponsorships. We shall be announcing next week an exciting promotional package for our three successive home matches in June, starting on June 14 against South London at Woollams, said media officer Gavin Willacy. We have a couple of match sponsorships still available but they are going fast. Contact Ken Edwards on 07976088255 for more information. ____________________________________________ Tahu back for Knights TEST winger Timana Tahu will return for Newcastle on Sunday when the Knights take on Brisbane in the National Rugby League clash at the revamped Suncorp Stadium. Tahu has missed Newcastle's past two matches - losses to Cronulla and the Sydney Roosters - with a calf injury. Matthew Kennedy has been omitted from the squad which narrowly lost to the Sharks on Saturday night. Knights skipper Andrew Johns, embroiled in a feud with NSW coach Phil Gould, will play his 200th first grade match for the club. "We are under no illusions about how tough Sunday's game will be," said Newcastle coach Michael Hagan. "The Broncos were absolutely outstanding against the Bulldogs last Friday and will be very keen to launch Suncorp with a victory. "We are getting closer to our full strength side at the moment and the match fitness of some of our key men is also on the improve." The Knights, who have never beaten the Broncos in the Queensland capital, will fly to Brisbane on Friday to prepare for the game. More than 40,000 tickets have been sold for the match, Brisbane's first at the old Lang Park since it left for ANZ Stadium at the end of the 1992 season. Foxsports ____________________________________________ Guttenbeil out four weeks AN ankle injury to second rower Awen Guttenbeil has forced a shuffle in the New Zealand Warriors' forward pack to face Penrith in their National Rugby League (NRL) match this weekend. Guttenbeil sprained an ankle in the 18-10 loss to Canberra last Friday night and is expected to be out for four to six weeks. His replacement in the starting line-up for the away match against the Panthers on Saturday night will be Wairangi Koopu. Forward Evarn Tuimavave returns to the bench after recovering from an ankle injury. Coach Daniel Anderson said Guttenbeil's absence posed a challenge to the depth of the Warriors' pack, with Ali Lauiti'iti and Richard Villasanti already sidelined. It also follows centre Clinton Toopi's fracture dislocation of a finger, which is likely to keep him out for a further month. "Losing Awen is bad news, especially on the back of Clinton's injury," Anderson said. "It seems each week, the average age of our team is getting younger." Read more Foxsports ____________________________________________ O'Meley returns to Bulldogs team By Matthew O'Neill: Mark O'Meley will return to the Bulldogs team for Saturday's crucial clash against Wests Tigers at the Sydney Showground (5:30pm). O'Meley has missed the last four matches due to a hand injury and his go forward will be crucial, which was missing against the Broncos last Friday night. Willie Mason moves back to the second-row to allow for O'Meley's return and in a major surprise, Glen Hughes is the player relegated to the bench. Once again the Bulldogs bench looks very paper thin and lacks the mongrel and variety needed in the game today. Brisbane last Friday night withstood the opening 20 minutes and the fragile Bulldogs bench did the rest as the Broncos started to dominate the match in the backend of the first half. Promising prop Glenn Hall continues to be ignored despite it being clearly obvious the Bulldogs lack size and impact after the opening exchanges. Read more rleague.com ____________________________________________ Scott Hill ready to face Roosters Test lock Scott Hill is set to make his long-awaited National Rugby League return for Melbourne on Sunday against the Sydney Roosters. Hill was named in the Storm side for the clash with the premiers at Olympic Park after missing the past four matches with a shoulder injury. The 25-year-old will slot into five-eighth with Matt Geyer moving to the centres. "If it was finals time of the season then I probably could have played last week but I just wanted that extra week to give me peace of mind," Hill said. "The strength is back in my shoulder as is the confidence that I can play again without having to really worry about it, it's important that I feel that way before playing a game." Hill is in the throes of negotiating his playing future but is keen to block that out and get back to playing consistent football. His manager Brian Satterly will meet with Storm boss John Ribot on Saturday when it's expected a decision will be made on which club he'll play for next season. Satterly has held preliminary talks with Wests, Cronulla and North Queensland. "Just to be back on the paddock again is going to be a boost for me," Hill said. "Sitting on the sideline isn't much fun so to have some input into Sunday's game will be good for both myself and the club."
