Storm unchanged for Broncos clash 

Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy has named an unchanged side for 
this Sunday's clash with the Brisbane Broncos at ANZ Stadium.

Following last weeks 20-point win over the previously undefeated 
Canberra Raiders, the third placed Storm will be looking to take its 
strong home form on the road this week.

"We've put together a strong record at home this year with four wins 
from four matches, but the key now is to take that form with us when 
we travel," Storm skipper Stephen Kearney said.

"Brisbane is by far one of the toughest road trips in the competition 
and this weekend poses and enormous test for us."

The Storm struggled to a 2-1-9 away record last year, a stark 
contrast to eight victories from the last nine games at Olympic Park.

"We don't want to be known as the team that can play well one week 
and fall away the next week," Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy said.

"The last two weeks have been tremendous, the effort has been great.

"Our big challenge now is to have the same sort of effort away from 
home."

Bellamy and his coaching staff will await the outcome of an MRI scan 
on Junior Langi's strained right quadriceps; the centre incurred the 
injury during the warm-up before last weeks stirring win over the 
Raiders.

City Country History 

By Terry Williams: Although teams from City and Country NSW had their 
first meeting in 1911, it wasnt until 1928 that regular contests 
between the two commenced. 

This predated the formation of the CRL by some six years and came at 
a time when rugby league was thriving outside the metropolitan area. 

Those clashes produced some memorable clashes and kick-started some 
of games greats such as Eric Weissell, Wally Prigg, Herb Narvo, 
Graeme Langlands and Mick Cronin to name but a few. 

The annual clashes continued unchanged until 1984, when Sydneys 
growing dominance saw the introduction of a limited Origin concept 
for the fixture. This helped revive the matches and introduced a new 
generation of fans to one of the games great traditions. 

The re-launch of the fixture in 2001 attracted great support and 
highlighted the popularity of the game on leagues calendar, a fact 
acknowledged by the status accorded the game as a genuine trial for 
the NSW State of Origin side. 

Some of the memorable moments in City-Country history include: 

· Country's shock 35-34 win in the inaugural fixture in 1928 
· Country, coached by English international Phil Jackson, and 
captained by Tony Paskins downed the star-studded City side in 1962 
. City's 18-17 win in 1966 
. Country's unforgettable 18-8 win in 1975 
· City's gritty 26-16 triumph in 2002

Morris, even with a minor role, feels at home in the Country 

By Steve Mascord: Suddenly, it's as if the past seven losses never 
happened. Parramatta hooker John Morris is in camp with a Country 
Origin side containing six of his former teammates at Newcastle.

A high-profile recruit in the off season, the 22-year-old has battled 
to kick-start the Eels' barren season, while his old club has taken 
its usual place among the NRL's frontrunners.

Parramatta have two wins so far in 2003; Newcastle six.

"I played with them for so long and now I'm back, you feel like you 
know them and nothing has changed," Morris said last night at Gosford 
greyhounds, where the Country squad were making a sodden public 
appearance.

"They are obviously great players and they were good to play with in 
Newcastle and it's just good to be back with them in a team like this 
one. But it's not as if it's a relief . . . I'm still enjoying my 
time at Parramatta."

Morris quit the Knights to escape the shadow of Australia Test hooker 
Danny Buderus.

On Friday night at Central Coast Stadium, watching the kick-off 
against Sydney Origin from the bench, he'll be back in Buderus's 
thrall. "Basically, for me it's back to the old utility days and 
just 'be prepared for anything'," he said.

Warriors stay in top flight 

Training at Ericsson Stadium will be just a little less intense this 
week as the New Zealand Warriors look ahead to their first bye and 
take stock of their National Rugby League campaign. 

Coach Daniel Anderson is satisfied that after 10 rounds his team will 
have 14 premiership points, though he has hardly been enthused by the 
manner in which some of them were earned. 

If the front-running Canberra Raiders lose at home to the Penrith 
Panthers winners of their last four matches on Saturday night, the 
Warriors will be in a log jam just two points from the lead.

Origin stars on the outer 

Parramatta stars Brett Hodgson and Jason Moodie - both NSW Origin 
players - have been axed to Premier League by Eels coach Brian Smith 
for not performing.

The Blues' State of Origin players were selected in a preliminary 33-
man NSW squad last month but have struggled to make an impact for 
Parramatta since. 

"It all comes down to form," Smith said. "Brett has been a little bit 
below his best this year and we've been really impressed with what 
Ashley (Graham) has done when he has been given those couple of 
opportunities." 

The changes mean Parramatta's Premier League team contains Kiwi 
international David Vaealiki and the two Blues Origin stars. 

Lightweight fullback Hodgson missed last weekend's loss to the New 
Zealand Warriors because he was heavily concussed the week before 
against the Sydney Roosters. 

The Eels must now go in search of their third win of the season 
against Manly at Brookvale Oval on Sunday fielding one of their most 
inexperienced teams.

Eels chase Sherwin 

THE Bulldogs face an intense battle to retain Brent Sherwin after 
cashed-up Parramatta last night became the first high-profile club to 
publicly reveal they will open contract discussions with the City 
halfback.

The Bulldogs' hopes of retaining Sherwin have nosedived after a 
majority of NRL chief executives voted to keep the salary cap at its 
current level of $3.25 million at least until the 2005 season. 

Sounding an ominous warning to other clubs, Parramatta chief 
executive Denis Fitzgerald said the Eels would be "very competitive" 
when bidding for Sherwin. 

"He is a very good player and halfback is a position we have had some 
problems with in the last few years," Fitzgerald said. 

The Eels boss said his club would open talks with Sherwin's manager 
Mark Rowan this week. 

In another significant development, the cap-challenged Bulldogs have 
granted centre Nigel Vagana permission to negotiate - but only with 
English Super League clubs. 

Asked would his club outlay the $250,000 asking price for Sherwin, 
Eels boss Fitzgerald said: "We won't reveal any figures but we would 
be very competitive in the market place for a player of his calibre.

"Canterbury may expect to re-sign him but there has been a lot of 
speculation about Brent and he will want to test the market." 

Wests Tigers and the North Queensland Cowboys have also expressed 
early interest in Sherwin.

Murray wants repeat Sherwin showing 

City halfback Brent Sherwin isn't known for his musical talent - but 
he's getting used to playing second fiddle.

The Bulldogs playmaker will oppose NSW and Australian halfback Andrew 
Johns in Friday night's City-Country Origin game in Gosford - a match 
that shapes as a genuine selection trial for the Blues before the 
opening State of Origin game.

But Sherwin knows he could play out of his skin and still have no 
chance of wearing the NSW No.7 jersey in Origin I.

Such is the life of a Blues halfback with Andrew Johns in the picture.

"Joey (Johns) has already got the halfback position so I'm just here 
having a bit of fun for the week," Sherwin said today.

Sherwin was one of City's best last year when they upset Country 26-
16 at Wagga Wagga and coach Graham Murray will be looking for a 
repeat effort on Friday night.

The 25-year-old is one of nine players from that side retained by 
selectors for Friday night's match and, along with Bulldogs teammate 
Braith Anasta, will carry much of the responsibility for a City 
outfit seeking revenge.

"Hopefully me and Shifty can combine well to lead City to another 
win," Anasta said.

Anasta has been in good form this season, but it may not be enough to 
win him a starting spot in the Blues side.

Trent Barrett has one hand on the NSW No.6 jersey while Ben Kennedy, 
Luke Ricketson - the City lock - and Steve Menzies are all vying to 
be at the back of the scrum for the Blues.

"I suppose it's not looking the best at getting the lock spot," 
Anasta said.

"I think my best go is probably the bench."

Sherwin is in the same situation, although he's resigned to biding 
his time behind Johns before getting a shot at Origin football.

Radlinski out for three months 

Wigan full-back Kris Radlinski has been ruled out for up to three 
months after suffering a recurrence of his wrist injury.

He underwent a bone-graft operation at the end of last year but 
aggravated the injury at the start of this season and will need 
further surgery which will sideline him until August.

The injury is another setback for Wigan, who were without eight first-
team squad members at Widnes last Saturday.

Coach Stuart Raper said: "This is another blow to us. We have known 
for a while that Kris needed an operation and he has been playing 
with pain-killing injections for most of the season.

"Kris put his hand up and said he would continue to play during the 
awful run of injuries that we have had but, now players are on their 
way back, he will have the surgery."

Radlinski's absence from the Lancashire team for the Origin Game on 
July 2 could pave the way for Leeds' full-back Gary Connolly to 
extend his representative career.

RFL TIGHTENS UP INTERNAL WORKINGS 

England's Rugby Football League (RFL) has appointed its first ever 
independent compliance and investigation unit. 
In a major overhaul of the sport's internal operations, the RFL has 
created the posts of disciplinary commissioner and disciplinary 
investigator. 

Both positions are independent of the existing RFL executive 
management team. Their roles, says the RFL, are designed to ensure 
that both match day and administrative conduct and 
compliance 'remains at the highest possible level'. 

The unit will deal with match related disciplinary and legal matters 
while, at the same time, they will have responsibility for 
maintaining probity and good working practices within the whole 
sphere of off-field operations throughout the game. 

The creation of the unit does not affect the existing RFL 
disciplinary committee that will continue to deal with dismissals, 
referrals and citing of players. 

The disciplinary commissioner will be Norman Sarsfield, who has 
recently retired after a 32-year career as a solicitor and special 
casework lawyer with the Crown Prosecution Service in West Yorkshire. 

The newly appointed disciplinary investigator is Gary Haigh - a 
former detective superintendent who served 33-years with West 
Yorkshire police. 

Said Richard Lewis, executive chairman of the RFL: "The compliance 
and investigation unit will perform an important function and, most 
importantly, will give the sport a more independent scrutinising body 
with an appropriate and very high level of experience. It will aim to 
maintain the highest standards of conduct and probity within the 
sport. 

"The decision to put the unit in place was approved unanimously by 
the Rugby League Council in January 2003."

Andrew Johns returns for Newcastle 

Australian captain Andrew Johns returns from suspension to lead 
Newcastle in its National Rugby League match of the round against the 
Sydney Roosters on Sunday.

But Johns, named after serving a two-match suspension, is among six 
Knights players who will be required to back up after Friday night's 
City-Country game.

Newcastle coach Michael Hagan will be sweating on Johns, winger 
Timana Tahu and forwards Ben Kennedy, Danny Buderus, Josh Perry and 
Daniel Abraham all coming through the season's opening representative 
match unscathed.

The Roosters also have a high level of representation in the annual 
clash, with Craig Wing, Luke Ricketson and Anthony Minichiello 
representing City and Craig Fitzgibbon opposing his teammates in the 
maroon and gold of Country.

The Knights make up a bulk of the Country Origin team and the ability 
of those six players to recover in time for Sunday's game at Aussie 
Stadium will no doubt have a huge bearing on the match.

Currently, the Roosters and the Knights are equal on the premiership 
table with three losses from nine rounds.

They sit amongst a host of sides on 12 points and both will be keen 
to shore up their position with a victory against a fellow 
premiership heavyweight.

Speaking from Country camp, Johns said there would be no excuses for 
a loss on Sunday.

Brian Smith loses patience with Eels 

Fed-up Brian Smith finally lost patience with his Parramatta under-
achievers, dropping NSW State of Origin incumbents Brett Hodgson and 
Jason Moodie for Sunday's National Rugby League clash with Manly at 
Brookvale Oval.

Smith also named specialist forward Lee Hopkins at five-eighth as he 
continued his endless search for answers to the Eels' dramatic fall 
from grace.

But his decision to pick Hodgson and Moodie - who both played all 
three Origin games last season - in Premier League is likely to cause 
most angst among the diminishing Parramatta faithful.

Hodgson's axing comes as the biggest surprise.

The goalkicking No.1 was rested against the New Zealand Warriors last 
Saturday night after being concussed the week before against the 
Sydney Roosters.

Salary cap sanity has prevailed: Rogers 

Cronulla general manager Steve Rogers claimed sanity had prevailed 
after the National Rugby League clubs decided against raising the 
salary cap next season.

But some clubs are destined to pay a heavier price than others 
following the majority decision, with Bulldogs chief executive Steve 
Mortimer conceding it would hurt the `Dogs' chances of retaining all 
their stars.

The Sydney Roosters, Brisbane and St George Illawarra, all public 
advocates of an increase in the league's $3.25 million cap, will also 
face a struggle to retain players in the wake of the decision.

The club chief executives, at a two-day conference on NSW's Central 
Coast, voted by a clear majority against raising the salary cap next 
season but agreed to discuss lifting it in 2005 at the NRL's annual 
conference later in the year.

"Sanity has prevailed," Rogers said.

"It's a great decision. An enormous majority voted not to increase 
it."

It's understood the vote was 10-5 against on a day in which the clubs 
also endorsed a 'secure playing roster' to equalise playing talent 
and backed the game's current 15 teams.

Millward embarrassed by Saints slump 

St Helens coach Ian Millward says he was "embarrassed" by his side's 
home defeat by Wakefield - his side's fifth defeat in the last seven 
matches.

But he insists the downturn is a "mental thing" and they can turn the 
situation around, starting with the visit of London Broncos on Friday 
night.

"It's going to be an extremely tough game," he said. "If we play like 
we did against Wakefield, we will be losers but, if we play to our 
ability, we'll be competitive.

"We're not far off the mark. There are a lot of contributory factors 
but we're working really hard to rectify it.

"I'm really positive and I enjoy working with these guys because they 
need my support as much as they always have. I felt embarrassed on 
Friday night but I hope the fans continue to support us.

"The scary thing is, if you look at the table, we've got the best for 
and against in the League. Obviously it's a mental thing. They are 
quite unbelievable stats.

"I believe we will come out of this a lot tougher. We have learnt a 
lot and we appreciate how much we enjoy success. We've taken step 
back but I'm sure we can take two steps forward."

Bradford Bulls sign junior trio 

Two England Schoolboy internationals have joined Bradford Bulls.

Elland loose forward Ross Greenwood and Hull scrum-half Matty Brooks 
have been joined at Odsal by Eastmoor prop Matthew James, who was 
recommended by former Bulls prop Brian McDermott.

All three players have attracted interest from other Super League 
clubs, Bradford say.

Bulls recruitment manager Mark Robinson said: ''We have worked very 
hard to obtain the signatures of these very talented players.

''They represent the future of the club and we have high hopes for 
all three players.''

CEO's recommend a 'secure playing roster' 

A move towards a 'secure playing roster' to equalize playing talent, 
the retention of the current $3.25million salary cap and an ongoing 
commitment to the existing 15 NRL teams were among recommendations 
from today's Chief Executives Conference that will be taken to the 
NRL Board.

The special two day conference was called to address long term issues 
in the game and to give the NRL Board and Partnership reliable 
feedback from the clubs.

"There was overwhelming support for the view that Rugby League is in 
great shape and is a market leader both on and off the field," NRL 
Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop said today.

"We've got a lot of opportunities to make it even better for the 
players, the fans and the sponsors and, importantly, we have everyone 
working together to capitalize on those opportunities."

Following recommendations at last year's Annual Conference that 
player equalization be a major focus of early season planning, the 
CEO's today agreed to a process that will see a recommendation of 
a 'secure playing roster' put to the NRL Board.

The concept of clubs agreeing to directly support specified 
territories will also be canvassed with all stakeholders.

The Secure Playing Roster allows each club to 'protect' a number of 
players (recommendation 25) as well as a number of key rookie players 
(recommendation 5). Any player not secured by a club would be 
available to rival clubs who have not already secured their top 25.

A final decision on the Secure Playing Roster would be expected in 
time for this year's June 30 Deadline for re-signing existing players 
and would require consultation with Boards and the RLPA, who are 
already well aware of the concept .

There was a strong majority of CEO's in favour of pursuing the system 
with the Board just as there was a strong majority in favour of the 
retention of the current salary cap of $3.25million for 2004.

Figures shown within the meeting demonstrated that while the nominal 
cap had remained at 3.25million since 1998, that concessions given 
over the last three years amounted to a nine percent rise in real 
player spending opportunities for clubs.

There was unanimous agreement that any discussion regarding the 2005 
cap should be held at the 2003 Annual Conference.

"The view was pretty clear that the time to change the cap was not 
just as clubs are trying to re-sign players before the June 30 
deadline," NRL Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop said today.

The meeting also received a proposal from the Parramatta club 
regarding a National Under 19's competition to be played in 
conjunction with the NRL.

There was general support for the concept but it was acknowledged 
that significant work would be required to establish funding models.

It was agreed that a working party be established to investigate the 
practicalities and the ramifications of such a competition, as well 
as carrying out further research into the best age limit to apply.

The working party is expected to include representatives of the state 
and national leagues, club development officers and NRL clubs.

Initial feedback from club development officers will be sought 
immediately with the working party to be established at the June 
meeting of Chief Executives and to provide any formal recommendations 
in time for the 2003 Annual Conference.

NSWRL announce the inaugural Jim Beam Cup representative team 

The NSW Rugby League today announced the inaugural Jim Beam Cup 
representative side, to take on the Brisbane Capitals at Campbelltown 
Stadium next Wednesday May 21.

Mr Bob Millward, NSWRL Board member and Chairman of the Jim Beam Cup 
Management Committee, expects the side to give a good account of 
themselves and the competition. 

" The inception of the Jim Beam Cup has been the catalyst for a rise 
in the standard of football at this level and there is a depth and 
quality of player in the competition that didnt previously exist."

" That reflects the success of the competition, now we would like to 
test ourselves against an opponent of deserved repute. The Queensland 
Cup has built a strong tradition for a high standard of play that has 
always been displayed in their representative teams. We are confident 
that we now have a structure that will match the best Brisbane can 
send us."

"The mixture of youth and experience in this team is exciting and we 
expect this side to represent the Jim Beam Cup with distinction. Many 
of the team will also be available for the Under 21 Colts team that 
is scheduled to play before the Test on July 25, which shows that the 
young talent in the competition is thriving." he stated

Road Train launched 

The Telstra Premiership Rugby League Road Train enters a record 
breaking third year with a new rural ambassador and new experiences 
to bring to regional communities. 

The City and Country Origin League teams were on hand in Gosford 
today for the official season launch of the 2003 Telstra Premiership 
Rugby League Road Train and to welcome former Premiership star Adam 
Ritson to the Telstra Road Train team. 

Adam will join the Telstra Road Train's staff as the giant semi 
trailer smashes all mileage records for a travelling sporting 
exhibition. 

The Telstra Road Train will also link the NRL theme of 'That's my 
Team' to hundreds of junior teams around the country by giving them a

In its third year, the travelling exhibition will pass the 70,000 
kilometre milestone, nearly triple the distance travelled by the 
Sydney Olympic Torch Relay. By the end of the tour it will have taken 
the total number of regional centres visited over the three years to 
more than 100. 

Already more than 150,000 young league hopefuls have been inspired by 
the collection of priceless memorabilia and interactive displays.

Broncos back to 1988 

When the Broncos run out on to the magnificent new Suncorp Stadium to 
take on Newcastle at 3pm on Sunday June 1, they will be wearing 
jerseys which replicate the uniform the club donned for their 
inaugural NRL clash, back in 1988. Predominantly gold in colour, the 
jerseys feature seven white stripes across a maroon panel on the 
front lower half of the garment. 

The jersey was officially unveiled at a special function in the 
Broncos boardroom today and was paraded by two Broncos legends 
inaugural captain Wally Lewis and current skipper Gorden Tallis. 

"This is an historic event for the Broncos, and for rugby league, and 
we wanted to give our fans something for posterity," explained 
Broncos Managing Director, Bruno Cullen. 

"To return to our original colours to commemorate such an important 
occasion is a significant focus on what will be seen as a major 
milestone in our history. However, by its design, the jersey 
incorporates the old and the new, and I have no doubt our supporters 
will be impressed with what they see."

Harrigan to referee City-Country 

LEADING referee Bill Harrigan has been appointed to control Friday 
night's City-Country representative rugby league match at Gosford's 
Express Advocate Stadium. 

Steve Chiddy and Darren Gocher are the touch judges, with Shayne 
Hayne the standby referee.

Torrens and Harrison to miss one game each 

South Sydney second rower Ashley Harrison and Manly centre Albert 
Torrens will each miss one National Rugby League match after both 
made early guilty pleas to careless high tackles charges. 

Harrison will miss Souths game against the Sharks while Torrens will 
be absent when the Sea Eagles take on Parramatta.

Robbie Kearns talks up Craig Bellamy 

Melbourne prop Robbie Kearns has paid Craig Bellamy the ultimate 
compliment, claiming the rookie coach is already in the class of 
supercoaches Wayne Bennett and Phil Gould. 

Bellamy, a former assistant to Bennett at Brisbane, has had an 
immediate effect at the Storm, with the club in a share of third 
after nine rounds of the premiership. 

"He's a great coach," Kearns said. 

"I really think he's going to be around the coaching game for a long 
time. 

"He's up there with the coaches I have had, if not the best. 

"I have had some great coaches, I've been coached by the best of 
them. 

"I had a couple of games with Wayne Bennett in the Australian side in 
98 and Opes (Chris Anderson), but he's definitely got all the makings 
to be a great coach." 

Bellamy's mettle has been tested early in his career as a first grade 
coach, with the Storm battling a frightening injury toll. 

But the former Canberra Raider utility has handled all the challenges 
with aplomb, turning the Storm into a force once again. 

"There were times last year when after a loss guys would come to 
training kicking stones," Kearns said. 

"This year after a loss we come in and want to ... make amends for 
it. 

"This year we get there on a Monday after a loss and the boys are 
really dirty on themselves for playing poorly and we get out and 
train hard and try to turn things around." 

Kearns, who is off contract at the end of the season, indicated today 
he would like to sign a new deal with the club and finish his career 
in Melbourne. 

The 31-year-old has enjoyed a renaissance this season following an 
injury-plagued 2002, finding the form which made him a fixture in 
representative sides in years gone by. 

He was named captain of the City side for Friday night's City-Country 
Origin game and has his sights set on a return to the NSW and 
Australian sides. 

"I'm sure the Storm will talk to me in regards to next year," Kearns 
said. 

"I'm not sure what their plans are, possibly they might want to keep 
me, maybe not. 

"In saying that I'd like to finish up down there. But on the other 
side of the coin if they don't want me I'd be open to discussions 
with whoever is interested. 

"I'm 31 now and like I said barring injury ... I think maybe two 
years would definitely see me out. 

"Two years the way I'm feeling anyway. I'm really enjoying my 
football and I feel I'm contributing to the Storm and I'm still 
making sides like this (City) so it shows I'm going alright."
