RLCM ONE on ONE

Keith Hookway and Gary Belcher

Belcher says the Broncos are getting better

Keith Hookway, RLCM had a quick 'one on one' chat with Broncos
assistant coach Gary Belcher after the Broncos v Sharks game

Q. The kicking game that Broncos have now takes some pressure of
Lockyer.

GB. It definitely does take the pressure off him, but I do have to
say that our kicking is not as good as we would like it to be.

Ikin put it down Peacheys throat a few times, but he does have a
long kicking game.

Having long kickers will keep the fullback in his own area and if the
ball hits the ground, it is a great kick.

Both Ikin and Lockyer are long kickers, Swain has not had many
opportunities to show his kick yet, but when he does they are good
and he puts a lot of practice into his kicks at training.

Swain will be a good bonus with his kicking as the year progresses.

Q. The last 30 minutes there was lateral movement, not much go
forward.

GB. The boys did lose their way a bit. They forgot what got them the
30-point lead in the first place.

They went forward at times and Cronulla was showing them a lot of
space out wide and they were short on numbers out there.

Their intensity did drop off and I am sure that Wayne will mention
this week.

It may be OK to do it in games when you are 30 points in front, but
the thing is that you learn bad habits and when you are up against
the good sides and you might be up by 10 or 12, but they will peg you
back very quickly once your intensity drops.

Q. Toni Carroll, It is like he never left.

He has been great and he is going to get better. The speed of the
game is probably quicker for everyone, but he has been in the UK for
the past couple of years so he is just going to get better.

Q. Are players stronger, today?

They are stronger now than when I played, that is for sure.

I know that when a young guy is coming through he will get stronger
and stronger over the first 2 to 3 years because he will receive some
serious weight training that happens at every club.

But it is hard for me to say. Remember I have been removed from the
game over the last couple of years at the NRL level.

Q. Defence

Every team wants to slow the ball down and get off their line
quicker, but the referees play a big part in it and they will not
allow you to slow it down unless you dominate the tackle.

So it is a catch 22 situation if you do not dominate the
tackle,
you cannot slow it down and then you cannot get back quickly into the
line.

So somewhere in there you have to be very good, and probably
dominating the tackle is something that every one wants to be good at
every week,

Q.Having players like Carroll and Ikin back, does it help with the
team cohesion and continuity of the football team?

GB. Absolutely, they know Ben as a mate and as a player although he
has not been on the field much and it will be the same when Scottie
Prince comes back.

But, yes having Ikin and Carroll in the team helps other players
knowing that they have both already been around here before and it
makes an easier fit for all concerned.

Q.Half Backs?

GB. Scott Prince is still to come back and he may have a battle to
get the halfback job back.

Shaun Berrigan was not great for the first two weeks, but against
Cronulla he was a very good halfback.

I think Seymour is good and I do not know how many chances he will
get this year, but next year and the year after we are going to see a
lot of him.

Q. Three games, three wins?

It is nice to have six points, but I do think we could play better.

The way we started against Cronulla was fantastic and I know that has
been a goal of Waynes to try and get the guys off to a good
start.

It will take possibly 6 weeks to put it all together. The Souths game
was a hiccup, we did not turn up to play.

But, we are getting better

Fitzgerald slams NRL plan to lift salary cap

By Steve Mascord: Parramatta chief executive Denis Fitzgerald last
night criticised NRL plans to increase the salary cap, claiming
players are already paid more than enough.

NRL chief executive David Gallop has admitted over the past two weeks
that the NRL is considering allowing clubs to spend more than the
permitted $3.25 million in future.

Gallop believes it is time for the game to share its growing wealth
with its employees - the players - but Fitzgerald last night
foreshadowed a spirited debate over the issue when club bosses meet
next month to discuss the competition's future.

"No, I do not agree with it - because the game can't afford it,"
Fitzgerald said. "All clubs are losing money if you take away the
leagues clubs and, if anything, the salary cap should come down."

The Eels boss said the argument about sharing the success of the game
with players didn't wash with him.

"I would say the employees are doing pretty well out of the game
already," he said. "Through News Limited and Super League, their
wages tripled and quadrupled when the game wasn't generating enough
money to support it.

"Increasing the cap isn't sustainable."

Fitzgerald said he would be "at the forefront" of the argument
against increasing the cap when the 15 club CEOs met in Gosford
during mid-May.

Gallop said there was no suggestion the cap would be
raised "tomorrow".

"But I think, going forward, it is something we can look at in the
future," he added.

BULLDOGS
Hughes named to take over from Anasta

Teenage five-eighth Johnathan Thurston may be a late inclusion
against Parramatta on Friday night. Hooker Corey Hughes, back from an
elbow injury, was named last night as the replacement for injured
pivot Braith Anasta, with Adam Perry retained as rake. But Thurston
said he was recovering well from a shoulder injury. "I'm not sure if
I'm playing this week," he said. "Things are progressing well - I'm
waiting for the coach's decision."

BRISBANE

Broncos centre-cum-winger Stuart Kelly likes his new position, except
for one thing: it can become boring. "You can go 10, 15, 20 minutes
without having to do anything," he said. "You've got to go in looking
for the ball." Brisbane are unchanged for Saturday night's derby
against North Queensland.

CANBERRA

Raiders coach Matthew Elliott has named an unchanged side for the
fourth consecutive week but skipper Simon Woolford (back, pectoral
muscle) is in doubt for Saturday's trip to Penrith. Mark McLinden
(toe) and James Evans (leg) may be late inclusions.

CRONULLA

Matt Bickerstaff comes into the Sharks' starting pack for the
suspended Paul Gallen this Sunday, when Chris Anderson's side hosts
premiers Sydney Roosters. That gives Dean Bosnich his chance on the
bench but Cronulla are otherwise unchanged from the side that lost to
Brisbane last weekend.

MANLY

Luke Williamson, a lithe centre in his days with Canberra and
Adelaide, has been selected in the second row for the Sea Eagles'
tussle with Wests Tigers on Sunday. Solomon Haumono and Mark Shipway
return from injury as part of a five-man bench.

MELBOURNE

Youngster Billy Slater is playing so well in the centres for the
Storm that he's forced the highly rated Aaron Moule (groin) to return
on the bench against Newcastle on Saturday night. Fullback Robbie
Ross (hip flexor) also returns, while Mitchell Sargent replaces long-
term casualty Rodney Howe (knee) in the front row.

NEWCASTLE

NSW utility back Mark Hughes will make his first appearance of the
year off the bench against Melbourne. However, forecast returns for
key Knights forwards Ben Kennedy (wrist) and Matt Parsons (back) have
not eventuated, but winger Timana Tahu has apparently overcome an
ankle problem. And a broken nose has not prevented second-rower Matt
Jobson from being named.

NORTH QUEENSLAND

Ty Williams (ankle) returns to the wing for Saturday night's clash
with Brisbane after missing Monday night's win over South Sydney.

PARRAMATTA

Pat Richards replaces injured winger Luke Burt (collarbone) for
Friday night's encounter with the Bulldogs. Brett Hodgson returns
from a knee problem at fullback but back-rower David Solomona (foot)
hasn't been named.

PENRITH

Young forward Luke Swain, a 21-year-old from St Marys, will make his
debut from the bench when the Panthers host Canberra on Saturday
night. He replaces Ben Roarty, who was suspended yesterday for one
match on a high-tackle charge.

SOUTH SYDNEY

Hooker Shane Walker has been named captain against the Warriors on
Sunday as the Rabbitohs search for their first win since last July.
Brett Kearney's impressive display against North Queensland has
prompted coach Paul Langmack to pair him with Willie Peters in a new
scrum-base combination. Ashley Harrison moves from six to the back
row, where he replaces suspended skipper Bryan Fletcher. Prop Andrew
Hart (hernia) may be a late inclusion for the trip to Ericsson
Stadium.

SYDNEY ROOSTERS

Young Lelea Paea replaces the injured Shannon Hegarty against
Cronulla this Sunday. New cap Anthony Tupou, a 20-year-old Newcastle
junior, gets his chance on the bench at the expense of Ian Henderson.

WARRIORS

Sunday's game against South Sydney is a special one for winger
Francis Meli and second-rower Wairangi Koopu, who'll each be making
their 50th first-grade appearance. The return of centre John Carlaw
(hamstring) from injury is the only change.

WESTS TIGERS

Terry Hill (hamstring) is back from injury for Sunday's trip to his
former club, Manly. Corey Pearson returns from suspension and coach
Tim Sheens has named a seven-man bench.

Langmack: 'My fault Souths lost'

By DEAN RITCHIE: SOUTH Sydney coach Paul Langmack yesterday told his
shattered players: "It's my fault we lost".

In a brutally honest appraisal of his performance as Souths coach,
Langmack accepted full blame for the club's 27-20 loss to North
Queensland at Aussie Stadium on Monday night.

The loss was Souths' third this season and the club remains anchored
to the bottom of the Telstra Premiership.

Souths players had a day off yesterday but many held private meetings
with Langmack to discuss the disappointing defeat.

"I take full responsibility," Langmack told The Daily Telegraph.

"The buck stops with me. I'm the coach. It's my fault.

"Maybe I was a bit soft on them.

"Obviously I didn't prepare the players right. I have to look at
myself.

"I didn't get them up for the game they have to be in a certain state
of mind and I didn't get them into that position.

"But it's no good yelling at the players. We're in this together. I
want to trust them and they trust me."

Broncos may take pay cuts Petero

Barry Dick and Steve Ricketts: RUGGED prop Petero Civoniceva expects
some of his Broncos teammates to accept pay cuts rather than leave
Brisbane.

The Queensland State of Origin front-rower said the re-signing of
fellow prop Shane Webcke would sway several of the younger players in
the club to settle for less money than they might make elsewhere.

Civoniceva turned down a massive offer from the North Queensland
Cowboys last year to sign a one-year deal with the Broncos. He has an
option in his favour for 2004.

Broncos managing director Bruno Cullen on Monday revealed "up to 70
per cent" of the first-grade squad of 25 would be coming off contract
this year and indicated it would be impossible to keep all of them if
most did not take paycuts.

Civoniceva said he would be surprised if several players opted to
leave the Broncos.

"It's not a monetary issue," he said. "It's the things we have here
at the Broncos, like the family environment. It would be hard to find
that at another club.

"It's fantastic for the club to regain Shane's services for another
three years. He's the number one prop in the game and just to have
him sign for another three seasons is going to sway a lot of young
guys to stay."

RAPER SILENT OVER O'NEILL SWITCH

Stuart Raper has refused to comment on speculation linking Wigan's
Australian stand-off Julian O'Neill with a move to Widnes.

The Vikings, desperate for a stand-off following the loss of Steve
Carter and Craig Weston, failed in a bid to tempt Henry Paul back
from rugby union and are thought to have turned their attention to
O'Neill who was dropped for Wigan's match against London.

Widnes hope to announce the end of their search after a board meeting
on Tuesday night, but Raper declined to say whether O'Neill is
available.

"I never add to speculation," he said.

"Julian is in contention for this week's game, and I will be
selecting the side on Thursday."

Farrell to miss Challenge Cup clash

Wigan are resigned to being without captain Andy Farrell for their
Powergen Challenge Cup semi-final against Bradford Bulls.

Farrell has missed the Warriors' last five matches after injuring his
knee in the opening Tetley's Super League match in February but had
hoped to return for the semi-final on Sunday week.

"He's had a bit of a setback," said Raper.

"It's taking longer than we thought. He's been back to the specialist.

"It's hard to tell when he'll be back. He's very doubtful for the
semi-final, if no chance at all."

Wigan have made a stuttering start to the season. But coach Stuart
Raper refused to use the absence of their captain as an excuse.

"You are always going to miss your captain, but we can't use it as an
excuse," he said.

"Every week I've been very comfortable with the players I've
selected. I've shown faith in them, and they've got to come up and do
a job."

Vainikolo signs new Bradford deal

Lesley Vainikolo has signed a new two-year contract with Bradford
Bulls.

The New Zealand winger will stay at Odsal at least until the end of
the 2005 season.

His new contract includes a 12-month option for 2006.

Vainikolo, who joined the Bulls on a two-year deal at the start of
last season from Canberra Raiders, has scored 16 tries in 29
appearances, including five in this season's Powergen Challenge Cup.

He said: "I have been very happy at the Bulls. There is a great
family atmosphere at the club and they look after you both on and off
the field.

"I am delighted to commit my future to the club and I am looking
forward to achieving success with them over the length of my
contract."

Vainikolo, who played in the 2000 World Cup final, missed out on
selection for last year's Kiwi tour to Britain but Bulls coach Brian
Noble has no doubt about the player's ability.

"Many people had things to say about him last year but there is no
doubt in my mind that he is one of the world's outstanding players
and he will be a great asset to us over the next few years," said
Noble.

Raiders surprise critics

Canberra Raiders coach Matt Elliott is not overly surprised at his
team's current success in the NRL season so far, despite the club's
2002 woes.

With a perfect three wins from three games, Elliott puts the Raiders'
current good form down to solid preparation in the days before
matches.

The team's performances come as no great surprise to Elliott who
believes the two away victories against North Queensland and Wests
Tigers and the home win over St George Illawarra were reasonable
assumptions.

"If you look at the three games won, it's not surprising we won,"
Elliott said.

While the challenge is in maintaining momentum and taking on more
fancied opponents, Elliott believes they have the right philosophy.

"Obviously, maintaining momentum is about maintaining preparation
standards," he said, adding this was a big part of pre-season goal-
setting.

Canberra may have defied some critics but Elliott concedes there is a
way to go before doubts could be effectively removed.

However, he has faith in his players and is confident the relatively
fresh group of outside backs will seize every opportunity.

"You can't become an established performer without getting out
there," Elliott said, "and the guys are starting to accumulate a bit
of experience."

Storm in disarray heading to Newcastle

Unbeaten competition leaders Melbourne Storm will struggle to field a
team for Saturday's National Rugby League clash with Newcastle.

The club is in the midst of its worst injury crisis since joining the
premiership in 1998, with coach Craig Bellamy having just the bare
bones from which to pick a squad to take to EnergyAustralia Stadium.

The Storm has a staggering 13 players unavailable after teenage
centre Jake Webster became the third player in two weeks to be struck
down with a knee injury. His season is over.

Former Test prop Rodney Howe was last week ruled out for four months,
while tryscoring centre Steve Bell has had an arthroscopy to
determine the extent of his knee problem.

"Basically, out of the 25 (fulltime players), we've got 17 fit,"
Bellamy lamented.

"I've never seen anything too much like it."

While Bellamy joked about how easy it was to select a team to tackle
the Knights, it was obvious he was only putting on a brave front.

"It is bad, but there's not much we can do about it," he said.

"We can't turn up and not play. We've just got to keep battling on
with what we've got.

"These last three knee injuries have really knocked us about and
we're just really struggling for numbers at the moment.

"Certainly it's not ideal."

The Storm was forced to call up several players from its Brisbane
Norths feeder club, but Bellamy admitted he may be running out of
friends and favours in Queensland.

Storm lose young centre for 2003

Young Melbourne centre Jake Webster has joined the National Rugby
League club's growing injury list after suffering a season-ending
knee injury.

Webster ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament playing for the
Storm's feeder club Brisbane Norths on Sunday.

The 19-year-old, who made his NRL debut in the club's round two win
over the Panthers, will require a knee reconstruction after a MRI
scan on Monday revealed a torn ACL in his right knee.

Webster is the 12th casualty on the Storm's roster of 28 players,
leaving coach Craig Bellamy with a job to do to piece together a team
for Saturday's trip to Newcastle to play the Knights.

Fellow centre Steven Bell will undergo an arthroscope on Tuesday to
determine the extent of a knee injury suffered at training last week.

Woolford given fitness deadline

Canberra skipper Simon Woolford has been given a deadline of Thursday
to prove his fitness to play in this weekend's National Rugby League
clash with Penrith.

Woolford has struggled with a lower back injury for the past week and
was unable to train before Saturday's 18-14 win over St George
Illawarra.

Despite the injury, Woolford turned in an inspired performance,
destroying the Dragons with a series of dummy-half bursts,
culminating in a try that proved to be the match winner.

Raiders coach Matthew Elliott named Woolford in his squad to travel
to Penrith Stadium on Saturday but gave him until Thursday to prove
he had recovered from the injury.

Elliott stuck with the same unbeaten starting line up he has used
during the first three rounds of the season.

NRL Judiciary - Fletcher out for one week

South Sydney captain Bryan Fletcher will miss the winless Rabbitohs'
trip across the Tasman this weekend after being suspended by the
National Rugby League judiciary for one week on a high tackle charge.

Fletcher was charged with a grade one careless high tackle following
an incident involving North Queensland centre David Myles in the 31st
minute of Monday night's game at Aussie Stadium, won 27-20 by the
Cowboys.

The 28-year-old entered an early guilty plea and was suspended for
one week, ruling him out of Sunday's game against the New Zealand
Warriors at Ericsson Stadium.

Fletcher was one of four players charged by the judiciary who entered
early pleas.

Penrith forward Ben Roarty and Cronulla back rower Paul Gallen will
also miss weekend action after being suspended on careless high
tackle charges.

Roarty was charged with a grade two offence and will miss the
Panthers' game against Canberra on Saturday at Penrith Stadium.

Gallen was hit with a grade one offence, but his previous poor record
ensured he would miss Cronulla's home game against the Sydney
Roosters at Toyota Park on Sunday.

Canberra forward Michael Hodgson also entered an early guilty plea to
a grade two careless high tackle, however, he will not accrue enough
points to be suspended and will be free him to play against the
Panthers on Saturday night.

West Tigers appeal

The Wests Tigers have formally made an application to seek leave to
appeal against the length of suspension imposed upon Luke ODonnell.

The Tigers second rower was suspended for 11 weeks on a striking
charge by the NRL Judiciary last week.

The matter will be referred to NRL Judiciary Chairman, Judge Greg
Woods, who will receive formal submissions from both the Tigers and
the NRL Judiciary Commissioner, Jim Hall, next week.

These submissions will be made privately after which it will be a
matter for the judge to decide whether leave to appeal should be
granted.

NSW selectors to announce Blues 30 man squad next Monday

Three rounds into the Telstra Premiership and the NSW selectors are
already close to finalising their first move in the 2003 Harvey
Norman State of Origin series.

The selectors met this afternoon to discuss who theyll be watching in
this weekends round before formally announcing the NSW Wizard Blues
Origin squad on Monday 7 April.

The 30-man squad is an initiative of coach Phil Gould who will assess
the fitness and medical status of the possible Origin candidates
during a one-day camp at Telstra Stadium on Monday 14 April.

The quality of competition that weve already seen in the Telstra
Premiership is pointing towards one of the most intense State of
Origin series in many years and I want to know as early as possible
what the situation is with each of the players who are figuring in
our thinking,Gould said.

The squad will mix potential debutantes with Origin veterans to give
them an understanding of what playing at the representative level is
about.

Origin football is unlike anything theyll have ever been involved
with before and its important to our campaign that some of these
young blokes get a real feel for what it means and also what my
expectations are of them.

Missing out on the Wizard squad wont rule out a players chance of
making the final Origin squad however Gould says itll be a fairly
good indication of whos in contention.

The intention of this squad is three-fold: firstly to get a number of
our seasoned players thinking about the upcoming series, secondly to
expose those who are likely to play Origin this year to our set up
and thirdly to encourage younger players who we expect will Origin
down the track.

We are very ambitious in terms of playing success and also commercial
off the field success.

We can help those interested with work and short term accommodation.
We are also always on the look out for senior and junior coaches who
would like the challenges that a growing club such as the Skolars
brings.

RLCM COACH EXTRACT - Preparing the Junior Representative Team
By Matt O'Hanlon ARL Level 3

..................made up of the leftovers will struggle a little
because they are not only working on the activity you have set
but also developing communication. As coach you
may think this group is behind in skills when really
they are developing group dynamics at the same time
as taking on new drills and activities.

If the groups are organised so they are not comfortable - and I would
suggest this is the best way - stress the use of calling
first names throughout the session. As a result of this,
team dynamics will broaden and move away from the
singular comfortable groups that are formed prior to
team assembly and take on a team dynamic which is
free of cliques that can often undermine the culture of
the team.

Another benefit of the team culture is that it provides
a defence against the malingerer who will take all the
shortcuts and can be very damaging to a team because
they can lower the potential of the team. I have also
found that keeping the team together at carnivals and
championships whenever possible and wearing
common team gear for training and to games helps
players identify with the team and helps build the all
important team culture.

Whilst all of these facets may not seem essential for performance,
concentrating on these areas prior to flying into game plans, plays
and team skills will provide the foundation for a successful
campaign. If as a coach we forget to establish this
communication, team cohesion may take 3 or 4 days
to adjust to the new order. This is time that could have
been used more gainfully in other endeavours.

Another area of importance is to see if fitness levels
are up to the required standard. At the first session the
coach could test players against their stated 12 minute
run or the 2.4km distance. Collate these times and find
the average to give information that compares with
the previous years. If it is the first time information of
this type has been gathered you can use in the future.

If your times seem dissapointing remember they are
only an indication of fitness, not of how kids will play
in the heat of battle. Use parts of this infromation to
let your players feel positive about their performance
and their level of fitness.

Positive affirmations can go a long way with young players, As a rule
always keep your misgivings on players to yourself and staff
because negative vibes from a coach can have a
detrimental effect on apprehensive young player and
in turn this can result in impending doom.

As stated in the first part of this series, team selection
is a very tough and often a subjective process. As a
result there often tends to be a slight imbalance between
attacking and defensive style players in your side,
usually slanted to the attacking side.

Hence we need to make sure our training encompasses both tackling
and defence and not just lots of feel good attack against
an invisible team. An example would be to use a left
side attack against a right side defence.(see drill 6)
This will also help build productive groups that can
be tested under a form of game pressure in skills of
teamwork in attack and defence and importantly,
communication..........................Read more
