That means careful management of his 31-year-old body and taking a sensible approach in not coming back too soon from injury. It's why Hill has been omitted from the Tigers side to take on the Bulldogs in the NRL match at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday night. He suffered a groin strain in Wests' 15-8 loss to Canberra at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday night. "It's only minor and it's just a precaution. I should be 100 per cent to play the Sea Eagles (at Brookvale Oval) the following week," Hill told AAP. "I just don't want to do any further damage to it. With what's happened in the past, and it's only early in the season, I may as well be smart about it. "I want to be there for the long haul, not the short haul." Ironically, it was against the Raiders in round three last year when Hill's 2002 season came to an end and over several ensuing months he underwent three operations for groin and hernia injuries. "I've had my running battle with trainers and training methods at the club over the years," said Hill, who's played just 33 games in the past three seasons. "The 10km road runs and the 20km bike rides weren't good for me and it's come back to haunt me, but that's in the past." Read more Sportswatch ================================================================= Marsh to stand in for injured Jones in goal-kicking role By PETER JESSUP: P. J. Marsh will take the kicks for the Warriors against the Sea Eagles in Manly on Saturday, with Stacey Jones unable to practise goal shots because of a quadricep injury. It is long-term niggling complaint which will not affect his game, but the injury requires management and this week that means rest from repeated goal-kicking. "He [Jones] can't practise so P. J. will kick, he's very motivated to do it," coach Daniel Anderson said. "Practising puts too much load on Stacey's leg. He will be okay once he can practise." Anderson was not panicking about the kicking role. Former Warrior, Kiwi and All Black Frano Botica has already held kicking lessons for Marsh and Jones, Lance Hohaia and Motu Tony, and is monitoring their progress. Piggins' claim comes after Parramatta yesterday unveiled new seating at both ends of Parramatta Stadium through a $1.5 million State Government grant. Piggins said last night Rabbitohs supporters could not afford to attend matches at Aussie Stadium. He said he was disappointed at last Sunday's crowd of 9830 for the match against Brisbane. Piggins said a grant from the State Government could help the club re- establish Redfern Oval as an NRL venue, at least for matches against out-of-town clubs. The Rabbitohs lost $15,000 last Sunday because of the poor crowd, with the hirer's fee for each match $40,000. Piggins yesterday gave reasons for the poor crowd. "We were extremely disappointed with the crowd," he said. "But the SFS is just too dear for South Sydney fans. Read more The Australian =================================================================== It's going to be tough and tight, says Tallis Steve Ricketts: THE rough and tumble start to the NRL season has convinced Brisbane Broncos skipper Gorden Tallis there will be few big wins for his side this year. Tallis said yesterday every side had "worked their bums off" improving their defence in the off-season and this went a long way towards explaining Brisbane's hard-fought wins over lesser lights Penrith and Souths in the first two rounds. Brisbane will play the Sharks at ANZ Stadium on Sunday and Tallis has warned that the Chris Anderson-coached team has the firepower to make it another hard day at the office. In 24 premiership clashes last year, Brisbane won six matches by 20 points or more and another three by 14 points or more, but in its only match against the Sharks scraped home by two points at ANZ. "I seriously think everyone has worked really hard in the off-season on their defence and that has brought sides closer together," Tallis said. Read more Courier Mail =================================================================== Chris Walker out for a month South Sydney centre Chris Walker will be out for a month after fracturing a bone in his arm during Sunday's heart-breaking National Rugby League loss to Brisbane. Walker damaged a bone in his left arm attempting to make a try-saving tackle on Brisbane utility Casey McGuire in the 51st minute of Sunday's thriller at Aussie Stadium, won 22-20 by the Broncos. He is expected to back in mid-April. Walker was the biggest casualty of yesterday's loss to his former teammates, although Kiwi forward Fili Lolohea needed 26 stitches after suffering a head cut. Another ex-Bronco, five-eighth Ashley Harrison, also needed 12 stitches to a gash to his forehead. Yahoo Sport =================================================================== Dominic Feaunati to trial with Cronulla Former Wellington rugby winger Dominic Feaunati will trial with the Cronulla Sharks National Rugby League club this week. Feaunati left for Sydney on Monday for a two-week trial. On Saturday he made four appearances on the wing for Marist St Pats in the opening round of premier club rugby competition. The 24-year-old recently returned to New Zealand after spending the past two seasons at Pontypridd in Wales. He played for Viadana in Italy in 2000. Feaunati's agent Rob Brady said the player was exploring his options in league, but had not ruled out rugby. "If he cannot play as a full-time professional in league then his aspiration is to play for Samoa at the rugby World Cup." Brady said Feaunati had trialled with the New Zealand Warriors in February, including a game against the Sharks. The Warriors were impressed, but felt he had not played enough league in recent times to warrant a fulltime contract. The club asked him to play for an Auckland team in the Bartercard Cup so it could assess him further. But Brady said Feaunati was looking for a professional contract and the Sharks were looking for a wing. Yahoo Sport =================================================================== BIG GUNS BACK FOR WIGAN By Ian Laybourn: Wigan expect to welcome back four internationals for Friday's visit of London Broncos to the JJB Stadium. Coach Stuart Raper admits he is facing a selection dilemma after Terry O'Connor, Mick Cassidy, Brian Carney and Terry Newton, who all missed Sunday's 34-29 win at Wakefield through injury, reported fit today. The Warriors' only absentee is likely to be skipper Andy Farrell, who is making a slow recovery from minor knee surgery but is on course to return in time for the Powergen Challenge Cup semi-final against Bradford on April 13. "We were hopeful he'd be back for this week because he's usually a quick healer," said Raper. "It's not coming on as quick as we thought but we're hoping he'll be all right for the following Friday. I'm not going to rush him back." Sporting Life =================================================================== Cullen favourite to coach Lancashire Warrington coach Paul Cullen is favourite to take over the reins of Lancashire for this year's Origin Series after Ian Millward turned down the chance to continue in the job. St Helens boss Millward, who led the Red Rose county to victory in both legs of the 2002 series against Yorkshire, has told the Rugby Football League he wants to concentrate on his full-time role with the Super League champions. "I told the Rugby League that all my attention this year must go on St Helens," Millward told Sportinglife.com. "I asked them to give one of the other great coaches in Super League the chance to lead the side this time." The RFL are now likely to turn to Cullen, who was Millward's assistant last year and was also number two to John Kear with England A. Bradford Bulls' Brian Noble, the Great Britain assistant coach, is expected to remain in charge of Yorkshire as long as he wants the job. Ananova =================================================================== Patten backed to start for Bulldogs The Bulldogs are confident fullback Luke Patten will recover from a back injury in time for their National Rugby League clash with Wests Tigers at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday night. Patten did not take part in the Dogs' 24-20 loss to the New Zealand Warriors last Sunday and will undergo a fitness test later in the week. "Todd Polglase played well last week after the late call up, but we are confident Luke should be back this week," Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes said today. Cult figure Willie Mason will again start the match after being dropped from the round one squad for disciplinary reasons. Folkes named the 115kg forward on the bench for the match last week against the Warriors but Mason ended up starting. Bulldogs squad: Luke Patten, Hazem El Masri, Nigel Vagana, Willie Talau, Matt Utai, Braith Anasta, Brent Sherwin, Mark O'Meley, Corey Hughes, Steve Price (c), Glen Hughes, Willie Mason, Travis Norton. Interchange: Andrew Ryan, Adam Perry, Dennis Scott, Jamie Feeney. Sports Yahoo =================================================================== Carroll to join Bronco 100 club After Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett made light of major milestones recently it was refreshing to hear centre Tonie Carroll excited about playing his 100th first grade game for the club against the Sharks on Sunday. Last week Bennett brushed aside the amazing achievement of coaching 400 games but Carroll, who returned from playing with Leeds in England this season, was talking up his up-coming "ton" with great enthusiasm. While 100 games may not seem a lot, only 24 players in Brisbane's 16 year history have hit triple figures. "It's a great honour and it's one of the main reasons why I came back to play for the Broncos was to get my 100 games up," said Carroll, still suffering slight headaches after being knocked out in the dying minutes of the Broncos' great escape against Souths last weekend. "I left the club with 97 games under my belt and for the last two years it has chipped away at me that I hadn't got my hundred games up. "I guess it's like a batsmen getting dismissed a few runs short of his hundred but now I can bring up the milestone against Cronulla and for me that's a honour." "It's played on my mind and hopefully this weekend I can have a good game and get over the one hundred games." With a three-year deal Carroll could push towards 200 games if he can keep playing well. Read more SMH =================================================================== Two players to front NRL judiciary Wests forward Luke O'Donnell and Parramatta second rower Steve Crouch will be the only players fronting the National Rugby League judiciary on Wednesday night after three others entered early guilty pleas. O'Donnell faces up to three months in the stands for a blow to the head that left Canberra halfback Michael Monaghan in hospital with a double fracture of his jaw. Crouch will challenge a grade one dangerous throw charge but opted to plead guilty to a grade two careless high tackle after being reported twice in the Eels' 30-28 loss to St George Illawarra at WIN Stadium on Sunday. Crouch escaped suspension for the high shot that concussed Dragons hooker Mark Riddell after being granted a seven-year incident-free discount. But he will still be outed for one match if found guilty of a lifting tackle that left St George Illawarra prop Craig Stapleton needing surgery for a shoulder injury that will sideline him for six to eight weeks. "I've watched the tape a few times and I didn't think there was too much in it," Crouch said. A week off in the middle of the season – a chance to give the players time to unwind, catch up with family and friends and return the following week fresher and keener than before the season even began. Sounds great. How come it rarely works? Take the NRL. It wasn’t until round seven in 2002 before a team returning from the bye came away with a win on their first game back. (For the record, it was Wests Tigers who grafted out a 34-16 win over the Northern Eagles). Before them, the Eagles, Eels, Dragons and Panthers all failed to profitably negotiate the week’s vacation. So what did the Tigers do differently? Well, nothing it seems – that is, nothing that hasn’t been tried before. As their coach Terry Lamb admitted to RLCM, it wasn’t until just before the bye that he decided on the course of action he’d take for the lay-off. “I sat down with Langa’s (Paul Langmack) and a couple of the others the week before and we decided that the players were getting a bit stale”, says Lamb. “Taking that into consideration we decided to give them the entire week off, completely free from footy and the club. They got the Monday through to Friday off and then I took them on the Saturday for a short session. Then they had the Sunday off and we got back into it on Monday. Our session on the Saturday lasted an hour and fifteen – we worked them pretty hard with the ball and some tackling and a bit of fitness. They were pretty much buggered by the end of the session but it was over so quickly that they still felt fresh. On their week off we instructed them to do at least two weights sessions and two runs – I have my doubts if everyone did this though. When they got back on the Monday we gave it to them on the first day back and then also hit them hard on the Tuesday, mostly with the ball and then we got back into their normal routine after that”. Although Lamb’s tactics obviously proved successful, he says he is not married to that for future byes. “Up until the bye we hadn’t had a week off from football for four months so I feel like we really needed it, but I would be reluctant to say that’s how we will approach every bye we have. We actually have another one coming up in three weeks so obviously the boys won’t be as stale as they were for the last one – it’s trial and error I guess”. From a purely physical point of view it is not advisable to simply give players a week off with no fitness work. Cronulla’s trainer Aaron Salisbury says devising a plan for the rest often depends on what stage of the season it comes in. “Most of the teams who have byes in the early part of the year haven’t developed their match fitness yet – so I would think those clubs would tend to give their players a solid physical workout in an effort to stay on top of it”, says Salisbury. “What we have done in the past is give the players a lighter week with the addition of some cross training leading up to the weekend and then give them all the weekend off. The week leading up to the bye is a great chance for a recovery week – for players to get over niggling injuries and take care of themselves. I think it’s important for the fitness levels to stay high though. From a purely fitness point of view I would say Wests Tigers’ method of giving the team the week off is not the way to go; but having said that it worked because they won on their return. It is up to the coach to gauge the feeling among his players and if he believes a total break is for the best – then it just might be the way to go. I also think that most players these days can be trusted to do their extras. You can’t survive it in first grade without it”. Salisbury says if you do decide to give the team a week to themselves, it is important they do some form of exercise. “If nothing else, the players should keep up their weights – you can lose plenty of strength quickly and it takes a long time to get it back. The weights should continue and at least two forms of cross training; be it a run or a bike ride. I would then give the players the weekend off and then get them back into it on the Monday, aiming to get back into your regular pattern as soon as possible for the game that weekend. Here at Cronulla our first day back after a game is a recovery day and then we spend the next one on a game’s day – so if we were coming back from a bye we obviously wouldn’t need the recovery so we would get straight into the games (three on two touch etc). To me, it’s important the players get back into their regular rhythm as soon as possible after a break”.
