Forget the swaddling clothes - it's reading the game that makes a
good coach
By Roy Masters: Graham Greene wrote that "champagne, if you are
seeking the truth, is better than a lie detector".
Maybe this is the reason coaches drink coffee, rather than any bubbly
stuff, when they meet.
Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy met Roosters coach Ricky Stuart for
coffee at the team's Coogee hotel before the Storm's match with
Cronulla.
Bellamy, 43, breakfasted with Stuart, even though he was an assistant
for five years to a coaching greybeard, five-times premiership coach
Wayne Bennett, 53. To Queenslanders, that's a little like the Pope's
favourite young cardinal seeking a meeting with the recently
installed Archbishop of Canterbury.
But young coaches are flavour of the month and Bellamy sought the
counsel of Stuart over Bennett, now in his 16th season with the
Broncos.
The Storm won a nailbiter over Cronulla, coached by Chris Anderson,
who is not Stuart's best mate. That doesn't mean Stuart gave Bellamy
the good oil, or that coffee is a truth serum.
Didn't Roosters coaching director Phil Gould once have daily cups of
coffee with deposed Rabbitohs coach Craig Coleman?
Still, hiring of coaches in swaddling clothes is the new trend,
particularly following the success of Newcastle's Michael Hagan and
Stuart, both of whom won premierships in their inaugural years -
Hagan in 2001 and Stuart last year. Hagan was 36 when he won his
grand final and Stuart 35.
New Zealand's Daniel Anderson, 35, also gave the young coach growth
industry a spurt by reaching a grand final in only his second year.
Appointing rookie coaches is a gamble designed to produce instant
gratification.

Sheens teaches his Tigers some new tricks
By Jessica Halloran: The gym was buzzing with banter. As the boys
were hurling around weights and bouncing off fit balls, they were
quietly basking in the glow of the weekend's win.
The West Tigers players were relieved they'd beaten St George
Illawarra, notched up that first victory. But you can only "suck in"
a win for so long, some said, then you've got to move on.
"You've got to suck it in but then forget about it today, to tell you
the truth," prop John Skandalis said. "We play Canberra on Saturday.
We're getting all these pats on the back but we haven't done anything
yet. We've only got one game out of 24.
"We always tend to win our first game then our second game, then die.
We are trying to ignore the pats on the back, we don't want to get
too relaxed."
Yesterday, Michael Buettner and Anthony Laffranchi were wearing the
cuts of the contest against St George Illawarra, their eyebrow and
cheek respectively patterned with stitches.
They ignored the soreness that every Monday brings, the bruises, the
corks. But pain is a little harder to deal with after the first match
of the year.
"Being the first game of the season you get those bumps and bruises
out of the way early," Buettner said. "It'll take another couple of
weeks before you get used to the grind and you don't feel so sore
waking up Monday mornings."
Everyone was pretty happy out at Concord Oval, a ground that has
become a league team's training home but where the walls are
decorated with huge photographs of union games.
The win came in the Tigers' first premiership game under coach Tim
Sheens, the man who the players say has brought a new discipline to
the club.
"Professional" and "discipline" are the words that pop up when the
players speak of Sheens.

Dragons to counsel riled Ryles
St George Illawarra officials have contacted judiciary commissioner
Jim Hall to assure him they would take action to clean up prop Jason
Ryles' act on the field.
Ryles was placed on report at the weekend for an alleged head butt on
Wests prop John Skandalis, but Hall decided not to charge the 23-year-
old because it "wasn't serious" enough to warrant it.
But that didn't stop Dragons chief executive Peter Doust ringing Hall
to relay the club's concerns over its young prop.
The NSW and Australian forward has made four trips to the judiciary
in his 55-game career and was spoken to by the Dragons last year
about tempering his on-field aggression.
"They are quite concerned," Hall said.
"They realise it wasn't any good for the game. They spoke to me and
told me what they were going to do.
"I said that was good and would solve the problem."
Ryles also suffered a head cut and scored a try in an action-packed
return from a foot injury in the Dragons' 24-20 loss to the Tigers at
Telstra Stadium on Saturday.
The raw-boned front rower conceded he should have ignored the goading
of Skandalis, but had to draw a line in the sand.

Hill climbs off deck
THE relief at Melbourne Storm headquarters was palpable last night
after MRI scans cleared star five-eighth Scott Hill of what was
initially feared to be a season-ending shoulder injury.
Hill left the field clutching his left shoulder in the dying moments
of Sunday's memorable win over the Sharks in Sydney.
After enduring a reconstruction of his other shoulder in 1999, the
international lock was all but resigned to a date with the club
surgeon.
However, the gloomy mood changed late in the day, with scan results
revealing no damage to Hill's rotator cuff.
With a week of treatment, there is even a chance he could play
against the Panthers at Olympic Park on Saturday.
"After having the other shoulder done, it was only natural Scott
would fear the worst, but the early signs are good," Storm coach
Craig Bellamy said last night.

Untried rule not so golden
By Stuart Honeysett: OPPOSITION to the untried golden point rule
increased yesterday with Cronulla and Melbourne coaches concerned
extra time could have been called on Sunday.
The NRL responded by hitting back at the detractors, claiming all
clubs had ample opportunity to voice their criticisms before the rule
was implemented for the season.
Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett has been one of the most vocal critics
of the golden point teams have a maximum of 10 minutes to break a
full-time deadlock and again expressed his fears about it following
the Broncos' narrow win over Penrith on Sunday.
Bennett was supported yesterday by counterparts Chris Anderson
(Cronulla) and Craig Bellamy (Melbourne) after their teams fought out
a tight finish at Toyota Park.
"It would have been tough, everyone was knackered," Anderson
said. "Especially at the start of the season, the last thing either
side would be wanting is extra time.
"I think they got caught up in a bit of a notion with this one."
Bellamy said he was more concerned about the effects playing an extra
10 minutes could have on his players for the following week.
"I wasn't a great fan of the golden point rule anyway for club games.
Rep games is a good idea. But they're the rules and it doesn't matter
what I think," Bellamy said.
"I don't know whether it's a life-threatening situation but it could
flatten you for the week after if you have to play another 10 minutes
in a game where you're exhausted."
NRL chief executive David Gallop said all clubs had been given ample
opportunity to register their concerns about the golden point rule
after it was first raised last year.

Raiders call for cap help
CANBERRA have joined Melbourne in asking the NRL board for salary cap
concessions for players living away from home.
Amid growing protests from a number of clubs, the board will today
make a firm decision on the issue.
Earlier this year the board decided to grant Melbourne's 25 elite
players a $300 a week living away from home allowance because the
club does not have a junior development base.
That meant the club would be permitted to spend $265,000 over the
salary cap limit of $3.25 million.
The decision took heavy flak at the chief executives' meeting earlier
this month because it was taken without consulting all premiership
clubs.
Raiders chief executive Simon Hawkins said the board would open a
financial can of worms if Melbourne was allowed the concessions in
isolation.
"I did e-mail David Gallop last week and I pointed out that 14 of our
top 25 players are from outside our development area," Hawkins said.
"That's 54 per cent of our players.
"I don't agree with the concept the board has come up with to help
Melbourne.
"But I told David that should the board grant concessions to
Melbourne then we would be looking for 54 per cent of the $265,000.
"If the board does help Melbourne I think they're opening a can of
worms because Canberra and some of the clubs would have the same
argument, albeit to a lesser degree."
Gallop said the NRL's salary cap auditors had considered the clubs'
views on the Melbourne issue.

NRL issues warning on punch-ups
Steve Ricketts: NRL chief executive David Gallop last night warned
players they did not have a licence to throw punches despite a lack
of action over a punch-up between Broncos skipper Gorden Tallis and
Panthers youngster Ben Ross on Sunday.
Gallop said the fight, which resulted in Tallis and Ross being sent
to the sin bin, was "far from an ideal situation" but he understood
there was plenty of feeling and intensity in the first round.
NRL commissioner Jim Hall reviewed the Penrith Stadium brawl
yesterday but decided there was no need for either player to be cited
for violent conduct or bringing the game into disrepute.
Gallop said that did not mean players involved in similar fights
would not be dealt with more severely.
"Commissioner Hall will keep monitoring these situations," he said.
It emerged yesterday Tallis had been upset by sledging from Ross
along the lines of "you can't play".
Broncos forwards coach Glenn Lazarus said: "I think Gorden wanted a
bit more respect from Ross. Ben is just a kid and Gordie is in his
prime. There was a bit going on before the fight. It was a great
Sunday at the footy. There was a bit of a stoush and the crowd loved
it because it doesn't happen too often."
Ross confirmed he had sledged Tallis and although he was upset on
Sunday over what he described as a "cheap shot" from Tallis he had no
hard feelings yesterday.
"It was just a bit of aggression," Ross said. "In the same
predicament I might have done the same thing. I'm just surprised at
the fallout from all this.
"I agree with Gordie that what happens on the field should stay on
the field."

Duo in shock return
By Chris Roberts, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner: Banned
Huddersfield Giants duo Stanley Gene and Darren Fleary are set for
shock Super League returns at Leeds Rhinos next Friday after taking
advantage of a loophole in the RFL disciplinary system!
But news of their imminent return is tempered by Matt Calland's
decision to retire following the fractured eye socket he suffered at
Wigan eight days ago.
That has taken the gloss off the positive news concerning Gene and
Fleary after they collected two-match and three-match bans
respectively for high challenges on Warrington's Lee Briers in the
Giants' Super League opener three weeks ago.
The pair have been cleared to play because it has been revealed
players can include Academy matches as part of their bans.

Leigh 31 defeated Oldham 26
LEIGH match-winner Neil Turley ran in 19 points to sink Oldham's
Arriva Trains Cup hopes and delighted coach Paul Turzis declared: "He
is getting back into form."
Oldham scored five tries to four but the full back's goal-kicking was
flawless with seven from as many attempts plus a drop effort.
Turzis added: "We weren't at our best but it is all about winning.
This result should put Oldham out of the competition and we are still
undefeated."
Oldham, who had been thrashed out of sight by Salford in their
previous game, hit back to make it 12-12 at the break.
But an interception try by substitute Eric Andrews with 11 minutes to
go snatched it for Leigh.

Schofield wants Aussies banned
OUTSPOKEN former Lions captain Garry Schofield has called for a ban
on all Australian players and coaches in the Super League.
And he has tipped a 3-nil whitewash by the Kangaroos in this years
Ashes series.
Schofield, no stranger to controversy, launched a wholesale attack on
the English game in the current issue of the Australian magazine
Rugby League Week.
Throw the Aussies out and dont let them come over, the former Test
skipper explained when asked how he believed the Lions could become
more competitive.
Mike Gregory did a great job coaching the English Academy to win over
the Australian Schoolboys last year, and weve got some good
youngsters coming through.
But theyre not given a chance to play in first grade because we have
33 year old Australians in their way.

CONNOLLY TO FACE DISCIPLINARY PANEL
Leeds and Great Britain full-back Gary Connolly has been ordered to
appear before the Rugby Football League's disciplinary panel on
Tuesday charged with an alleged high tackle.
The former Wigan ace was placed on report by referee Ian Smith
following the challenge on Hull full-back Steve Prescott during the
Rhinos' 41-18 Powergen Challenge Cup quarter-final success.
The League's executive decided to refer Connolly after watching slow-
motion replays of the incident.
Hull coach Shaun McRae insisted the player should have been sent off
and that his side should have been awarded a penalty try.

RLCM COACH EXTRACT - Captaincy with Mark Coyne written by Ashley
Bradnam
http://www.rlcm.com.au/editions.htm
Legendary Rugby League Coach Jack Gibson once said of captaincy,
'the job gives the man authority - but his behaviour earns him
respect.'
The role of the captain is often overlooked by the coach, when
searching for answers to a team's problems. Sure, most people know
the job is important, but how many coaches consider whether they have
the right person in the job to begin with?
If the captain isn't performing his role to the best of his ability,
there's a good chance the team's on field performance may also suffer.
So, what type of person makes a good captain?
Mark Coyne captained St George from 1994, and is regarded as a
shining example of a leader who is capable of getting the best out of
his players.
According to Coyne there's three major criteria needed for the job.
"Respect, communication, and a willingness to lead by example,"
Lets start with respect. Coyne uses the word liberally when
discussing the topic of captaincy. "Firstly, the captain needs the
respect of his players. If your players don't respect you, they won't
respect your decisions, and that may mean they won't
follow them... This leads to on-field confusion, which
obviously is never desirable". But the captain must also
have respect for his coach. The captain is the spokesman
on behalf of the players, and a good relationship with the coach is
critical, it lays the platform for open communication within the team
unit. The same can be said where the referees are concerned."
This leads into the second point - communication.
Communication, is a two way process, it's not just talking, but
listening as well.
"You have to listen to the people who matter, your coach, your
players, and make decisions based on what you learn from them.
Effective communication starts at training, preparing for the game,
so that everybody understands the team's objectives when on the
field. If we receive a penalty, and our hooker spies an
opening for quick tap, I should have already spoken to him about
whether he should go for it or not. If he waits to talk to me about
it in the game, the opportunity will be lost".
"The third point is leading by example, a critical component in the
captain's armoury.
Every step a captain takes is sure to be watched, by someone. Leading
by example is visible management, showing the team how to behave on
and off the field. It's no good me cutting corners at training and
then asking my players to dig deep in the match. I set the standard
for the rest of the team as far as our attitude in the way we
approach training and performance is concerned. Captaincy is a skill,
and like any skill, it can be practised to achieve better
performance. Whether you are a top swimmer, or gymnast, or singer, by
practising the skills of your trade, you will become more advanced in
executing them..............................read more
