It seems the rugby union are now even copying rugby league's mistakes these
days, by not allowing Rotherham to be promoted to the Zurich Premier,
because they do not meet the "minimum criteria" - so no one will be
relegated this year, no matter how crap they are.
Super League went down this route of course, denying promotions to Hunslet
and then Dewsbury, both with fine teams, whilst Huddersfield were
permanently glued to the bottom of the Super League for 3 years on the trot!
But when at last they were relegated, and Widnes promoted, the whole Super
League benefitted because Widnes have proved to be a quality side and have
been kicking ass and pulling in crowds to see them.
And Huddersfield have been rejuvinated in the second division, so its done
them some good too, they have a great chance of going straight back up a
much stronger outfit. All this makes for much better competition, and this
years Super League is set to have a major battle to avoid relegation between
Salford, Warrington and Wakefield, rather than the teams at the bottom just
giving up half way through the season, safe in the knowledge they will not
go down.
I feel sorry for Rotherham. They'd be better off switching codes.
