Thank you to everyone for their suggestions!!! Keep them coming!!
You'll never know how helpful you've been!! But oooppps I forgot
to mention my kids are 8-9 years old!!
Suggestions off the top of my head:
Some other websites:
FineSoccer.com - also has several newsletters
SoccerRom.com - This site is $34.95 per year but is worth every penny to me.
It has hundreds of drills professionally presented and searchable by topic,
skill level, etc. There are also plan libraries for different topics.
Books:
Go to the library or book store and look at some basic books. The Dummies
book is good.
Watch games on TV or local HS or college
See if there is training given locally for coaches.
My program will cover the small cost of a one or two day program. Talk to
other coaches and see where they learned.
Make a plan. Don't try to wing it at practice.
Let me know what age group you are working and I can suggest something more
specific.

Pass the ball to an open teammate. If you are double or triple teamed, you
have a teammate that is open. Keep your head up and look for him.
Sometimes your best shot on-goal is to give up the
shot, and give it to a teammate. Soccer is a team sport

Hello,
I'm a soccer player in my school. Whenever I am attacking, I
have difficulty dribbling inside the penalty because of all the
defenders. I can't seem to get a clear shot and more often than not,
I lose the ball. Can anyone give me any suggestions?

When in the open field, two opposing players can both challenge for a
header. Most of the time as long as both are going for the ball,
there is no foul. I have been told many times that the 'official'
rule is you have to jump straight up and be going for the ball. If
you do not jump straight up or are not going for the ball, then there
is a foul called on you. What is the official rule regarding two
people challenging for a header? I have seen many people get fouls
because they came running in...even though they were going for the
ball and actually got the ball!
I am a new soccer coach. I was the boys' AC last year. This year
when we couldn't get a girls' head coach, I took it on. I love
soccer at the high school level but never played--never heard of it
when I was a boy--and I would love to continue coaching it. But, the
time I'm taking learning the game, let alone learning how to coach
it, is costing winnings for my teams. Is there an english speaking
traing camp/workshop here in Germany? I teach for Wuerzburg High
School. It is a DoDDS school.

Hi,
My name is Tom Simec and I am a student of translation (ger / eng)
from Slovenia. For my degree I am working on a comprehensive soccer
glossary (slo-eng-ger) and I have come across some problems. I hope
You can help me. I have a few questions:
- is ELECTRIC BOARD the right expression for the device the fourth
official uses to indicate substituions and injury time?
- I have come across the term HEADING DUEL; does also the terms GROUND
DUEL (or duel on the ground) exist?
- some german soccer statistisc also include data on the duels a
player has won/lost; I would like to know whether it is possible to
name a statistics cathegory DUELS LOST and DUELS WON (eg: duels lost:
57)?
- also statistics: is it correct to say e.g. Rivaldo had 56 BALL
CONTACTS during the last match?
- a questions regarding techniques: what is the trick called the
Brazilian players (Ronaldo, Denilson) perform when they throw one leg
around the ball? Is it correct to describe it as FEINTING WITH
THROWING ONE LEG AROUND (OVER) THE BALL?
- if we divide the game into phases (offence and defence phase), can
we call the the final offence phase FINISH OF THE ATTACK (=shot at
goal)
Thank You in advance for Your replies.
Tom Simec
we have a system we use before every game. Friday nights we have practice as our games are Saturday at 3 pm.
Our system is we do warm ups for 10 minutes, then we do 20 minutes of 3 station drills. (I coach 8 and under and 10 and under). Station one is my defensive coach working with the four goalies for the next day's game. Station two is my other ass't coach working on ball control skills. I take station 3 and we work on attacking and turning the ball. Stations 2 & 3 switch after 10 minutes, but the goalies stay and work on skills and situations for game. Then after water break, we place the kids in the positions for the game. We have the team divided into two units, Thunder & Lightning. One week, thunder starts, the next lightning starts. I have 16 kids and it is 8 on 8 at this age. the thought behind this is to get them use to the players around them. I sub complete waves in, but I digress. We then have the two kids at each position. one coach is the ball. he takes a position. We then walk the team through positioning on the field based upon the ball's location. after about 15 minutes of this, we have Thunder scrimmage Lightning. But, and I emphasize the but, we stop play regularly and point out positioning, set the kids up in situations and run them over and over in real time, so one group learns how to execute it offensively, and the other defensively. Then we go to the other end of the field and do the same so EVERYONE is comfortable with all situations.
I found the walk through to really be the help, but the key for us is the extra time and attention we spend with the goalies.
Hope that helps!
Most Respectfully yours, Bob Robert L. Robinson, Jr.
Hi, I'm from a school who only wins a football game once every 5
years if that in NEW YORK, All the other schools have soccer I'd like
to start a team I only have until the 20th. of this Month to go to
the board meeting with the 32 kids that signed the petition I made
for starting a boy's Varsity Soccer Team, I have 32 commited guys in
grades 9-12 and I wanted to know What we need for a team next year?
and what the costs will range from?
A Soccer loving Guy,
Thank You!
:)
Me too! My U-10 Girls team leave a large hole in the middle and that is where
they lose it. We play 7 v 7, so I play 2 triangles where the there is 2-2-2, but
the 2 mid-field play fron mid and rear mid to help fill the hole in the middle,
but then they wind up running with the wrong group. Any stratagy to help with
this would be apprecited

Subject: [Good, Bad and Ugly (about Soccer)] Midfield Dilemma
I coach U10 and U13 teams - and both have weaknesses in "controlling the
middle of the field". We have good action on the very offensive end - and
also on the very defensive end - But our mid fielders - cannot seem to 1)
run the entire field 2) keep from getting caught too far upfield. Its tough
to get 10 year old kids to run the entire field (we play a 3-2-3).
Any suggestions?(practice drills or game strategy?)

Our team played one of the better teams in the U-12 boys league to a
1-1 tie on Sat. and then on Sunday played one of the weaker teams.
We lead at half 3-1 and lost 4-3! We did keep our starters in the
2nd half but they just seemed unable to finish it...any ideas?
Perplexed...
hello, i am a junior in high school playing school soccer this year
and i want to work on my dribbling moves (good ball control) and also
on a really solid and accurate shot. i was wondering if anyone can

I am a new coach for U-8 soccer. I didnt ask to be, but only wanted to assist. But, to my chagrin, I got the job as coach with no assistant. My question: is there a video or CD that I can purchase to give me ideas on games or drills to use during practice? Thank you in advance. Michelle Cole
I am currently re-entering the game after a shamful six year
leave...I was all state in NJ in 1996 and blew an oppurtunity to play
in college because I thought that doing drugs would be cooler...I was
wrong, now I realize that my one true love, soccer, is all I need.
My skills are still phonominal, I am just looking for some individual
training tips. I have been training everyday by myself, and am just
looking for a good program to follow...thank you
Ok im palying soccer at high school level and im trying to get my
skills up to college level play cause that is one of my goals since i
was little. I would like to know if any one out there know what type
of skills colleges look for and what drills i can practive on my own
to get better and impress the college coach.
I would also like to know how to do thoses crosses that curves to
one direction. I see them cross like that on mls games to aviod a
certain person but i would like to start practiving that now. Who
knows that might help me get onto a college soccer team i hope so.
Thx,
-Brad-
Hi! I coach a mens 2nd division team in the mssl league in mass. and
I'm running out of diferent drills and things to do. Does anyone have
any ideas.Thank you Eddie D.
This Fall I'm coaching a JV Boys High School team. Most of the boys have limited experience on the field, so I'm trying to keep things easy and strive for improving their basic skills.
So, here's my second question -- I am probably going to use a 4-4-2 defense with the 4 defenders playing zonal coverage. I know what to do with my 4 defenders but what do my 4 halfbacks/midfielders do? Should they be coving zones or making up in man-to-man defense? Should the wings have different responsibilities than the center halfs?
Thanks in advance.

I just signed up for this email group. I think this type of group and feedback could be really helpful. I've been coaching rec league for 10 years of various ages as my kids advanced thru the years. This past year I coached a boys JV high school team for the first time and really enjoyed the experience. This year I am giving it another shot but, I have questions....
My team last year was small, relatively slow, and outmatched by all the other teams in the division. I was signed up to coach 3 weeks into the season, so I had little time for much other than motivating and trying to figure out what they knew and didn't know.
For this year, I am going to start off on basics -- ball handling, team concepts, field vision, and some basic strategy. I want to work on our defense, too but, that's where we had problems last year.
One of our problems on defense last year was what I call "too much sag". My defense would sag back and back and back until the other teams' offense was 10-20 yards from the goalie!! Needless to say, it wasn't pretty!!
Does anyone here have any good drills, websites, philosophies, game strategies and/or examples of how to convey basic and advanced defensive skills?
Thanks.
