Excuse me if this question has already been asked.
Just like in football, isn't there certian plays my forwards can
execute on field to be able to score?
We have a couple of set up at the goal plays but I am wanting more.
Leicester? Haha!! They're going to get relegated...but
meanwhile all eyes on Sol this weekend. Wouldn't it be
great if he scores his first goal of the season at
WHL? ;)

I know that this is the perennial problem for coaches
everywhere and it doesnt matter at which level of the
game.
This might help in the future.
Depending on whether you are playing for sheep
stations or just coaching a bunch of kids because
there was no one else is an important aspect to take
into consideration. At the beginning of the year one
of the planning principles is to decide with your team
the goals you are trying to achieve.
You have a huge role to play here as you have the best
knowledge and understanding of the skill, motivation,
and development level of the squad. With this you
would be able to instil an outlook for the team to
follow.
On a slightly different tack Man Utd have followed a
very successful rotational system very successfully.
The australian womens hockey team under Rick
Charlesworth adopted this system a number of years ago
and have been very successful.
However any system needs the full knowledge of all
stakeholders and needs to be implemented at the
beginning of a season and followed through. The coach
needs to be aware of players strengths and weaknesses
as well as the opponents so he/she can produce a
playing roster to match the level of opponents.
hope this helps

Hi Everyone,
I coach football (as we call it here in England)to a group of 14 & 15
year old boys, and at present we have a squad of 17 players. The
rules of our league state that in an eleven a side match we can only
play 3 substitutes meaning that if all my players were available two
would be unable to play any part in the game. Often, for varous
reasons, we have had players unable to attend matches so this has not
caused problems. However recently I had 16 players turn up so had to
tell one of them he would not be taking part. The player himself
seemed to take it well and I promised him he would be able to take
part in next weeks match. However I did notice that both he and his
parents did leave the game early, and that evening I recieved a very
irrate phone call from his father who told me that they had travelled
some distance to be at the game, and they felt that I should have
contacted them beforehand to let them know that their son was'nt
playing, I realise in an ideal world that it would have been my best
course of action, but more often than not I do not know exactly how
many will turn up to a game, and can never bank on getting a full
turn out. This episode has made me quite upset because previously to
this I have always had excellent relations with my players parents,
and I am now wondering whether I should think about trimming my squad
down, although I would hate to have to do this as all the Boys have
been loyal to me over a long period. Maqybe some of the members have
had similar problems, and if so I would be very grateful for some
advice.

This is false. Spinning removes friction. Fastball pitchers provide a lot
of spin and rotation on the ball when they pitch and are among the most
accurate. Knuckleball pitchers pitch with almost no rotation and are among
the most unpredictable and slowest. In soccer when shooting you can use
different types of spin and power on your shots. Watch some of the free
kicks of Roberto Carlos and David Beckham to see what can be achieved
through different type of spin.

Hi Richard
Thanks a lot for your tips ; sure did save me a lot of time than looking up
.
Couple of questions on shooting 1. Should the leg swing as far as possible
for generating long shots and power.
In dead ball situations
2. How to make grounders - fast and moving very close to ground level
3. How to shoot waist level ; flat and hard shorts .
4. How to shoot high
5. How to avoid the ball from spinning too much in the air on shooting as
this creates friction for the ball.
You know I do mange to achieve some of the above ; but I never can predict
what kind of shot I would achieve when stepping up to kick the ball.
Look forward to your reply
Thanks
Soju

Hi
If it helps............
Trapping the ball..............If the ball is moving too quickly, take the
receiving foot back a foot or so......behind the body......the ball will
come to a stop much easier than trapping in line...................lay off
the ball first time by crunching the foot downwards behind the ball in a
slicing action........for younger boys I call this stamping on the
ant.....this is what it is similar to...............the side step take is
useful for playing the ball into space for yourself.....foot sideways on to
receive,,,,take ball with outstep as it arrives, this puts the ball to one
side of you if the opposing player is approaching directly.......reverse for
other side.---------shooting.......don't be afraid to make yourself
smaller......in pool you get right behing the cue to make the brain's job
easier.....same with football .....line up your body as tightly as possible
behind the ball.........if shooting from distance....put at least one arm
forward over the ball to move the centre of gravity forwards...this will
give more power to the shot.....keeping the head down as well.......(look
where the shot will go before striking)......often the hardest place for a
goalkeeper to get to is right next to his shins, so practise
this..........Dribbling, around cones is as good as any excercise.......make
sure to use the outside of the foot wherever possible as you need to keep
the body between the ball and the opposing player....this is only possible
if you can use both instep and outstep equally when dribbling
Hope this helps,,,,,,saves you looking stuff up......

I don't think it's a matter of if they can handle it. They are very strong
and aggressive. And above average as far as ball handling skills. They just
seem to not have the confidence to do it in a game situation. During
practice under pressure they can hit the upper and lower 90s with no
problem. Just something psychological about the actual game. Like coach
Tarlton said they want to pass too much. Giving up some obvious goal scoring
opportunities.

I have seen this phenomenon with girls teams all over the place.
The big
problem here is that they lack the aggression to finish. A lot of
teams will
pass the ball in front of the goal when they have a better chance
of
scoring than the receiver does. (sort of the hot potato in the box
type of
mentality) I have done a lot of work with having mine shooting under
pressure and shoot when they have a shot and not wait for that
perfect
touch. It takes a lot of time and patience and is not easy to break
them of
that habit.

John,
I sure Hope I see the answer to your question on here My U14 girls have the
same problem. Can move the ball up field against anyone, but when it comes
time to pull the trigger! They always want to dribble just one more step and
end up losing it. I run every one touch/first touch drill I can find and
just can't get them out of it. So maybe we can both find our solution.

When playing soccer I mange the team configuration
according to my players capabilities and also
responding to the other team.
From my point of view any configuration is the right
configuration. Try as a coach to figure it out by
trying different situations and see what works best
for your team.

Stopper's first responsibility is to the defend the
center of the field and also to provide support to the
midfielders. Sweeper fills-in the gaps in defense to
support the side (or the center) where the pressure
is.

Teri, I always try and just set
mine in practice and assign them a spot to
be or a "position" e.g. near post, far post, center of goal
etc. just keep
reinforcing during practice these are your positions if we have a
corner
aganst us. As to the offsides even my U14s have a hard time grasping
it
sometimes. I just try and teach them to keep there eye on the last
defender
and stay with him during the play. I use my dry erase board with all
my
teams to draw them a picture of what offsides is because I have forund
most
kids are visual. You show them a picture and they seem to get it
better.
Hope this helps alittle.

when the scored from a

What is the best and

I'm interested in the age range that off sides is introduced. In the
Chicago area travelling soccer has offsides down to at least U-9 and the
kids seem to be able to handle it. On the other hand, if they are playing
recreational soccer, it probably shouldn't matter for another year or two.
I think it makes sense to the kids (moreso than to their parents) once they
start playing positions and stop playing clusters.

I was surprised to read that 7-8 year old boys (or
girls) play with off sides. At this age skill
development is the most important aspect of soccer.
We introduce off sides only at the U12 level.
Also, your referee needs a refresher course, there is
no penalty kick for off sides.

At that age group kids should not only be focused on skills but they should
be playing in small sided games as recommended by US Soccer. This is
appropriate for their development as players and it keeps the game fun. It
also sounds to me like your referees need some training as well.

My first question is why U-8's are playing w/ the offside
rule in
place to begin with. As Roy mentioned, U-14's have a hard
time
grasping the concept of offsides so how can we expect 7 & 8
year olds
to do it. I would check w/ your club to see if you are
really supposed
to be teaching concepts like that to such young kids. Your
focus
should be on skills not concepts.
As a side note, offsides should not result in a penalty
kick.

My first question is why U-8's are playing w/ the offside rule in
place to begin with. As Roy mentioned, U-14's have a hard time
grasping the concept of offsides so how can we expect 7 & 8 year olds
to do it. I would check w/ your club to see if you are really supposed
to be teaching concepts like that to such young kids. Your focus
should be on skills not concepts.
As a side note, offsides should not result in a penalty kick.

Teri, I always try and just set mine in practice and assign them a spot to
be or a "position" e.g. near post, far post, center of goal etc. just keep
reinforcing during practice these are your positions if we have a corner
aganst us. As to the offsides even my U14s have a hard time grasping it
sometimes. I just try and teach them to keep there eye on the last defender
and stay with him during the play. I use my dry erase board with all my
teams to draw them a picture of what offsides is because I have forund most
kids are visual. You show them a picture and they seem to get it better.
Hope this helps alittle.

We've had 2 games so far that both would have been ties. In one my
players left the middle of the goal unprotected when the other team
was doing a corner kick. The other was when the scored from a
penalty
kick because we were called for off-sides. What is the best and
easiest way to explain to 7 and 8 yr. old what this is. thanks for
any help...Teri

After crossing mid field with the ball, your most
forward offensive player can not be in front of the
defense and accept a pass.
That should be easy enough to understand at their age.
Good luck, Chuck
