I am setting around waiting for the weekend and all I can see is
the team that I have obsessed over since I was old enough to know what
football was is about to screw the pooch again when it comes to the draft.
I have a sneeking suspicion that MY Raiders are about to pass on
what could be one of two Quarterbacks that could be top tier players
in the league. When I first heard that we might take Vince Young all I
could think about was the HEYDAY of the Raiders and all of us
returning to that great football plain. Now I am hearing that once
again our TEAM is talking about taking another "fast" defenseman for
the 7th pick. With these type picks rolling out from the Raider's
front offfice I can't help but think that Al Davis really has flown
the coupe!
Guys we need to ban together and post it everywhere that the
Raiders need to seriously look at moving up in the draft to insure our
selection of one of the two Great college quarterbacks of all time.
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!! My wife thinks I'm going crazy and she might just be
right... I think I need something for my nerves before this weekends
draft...

Hey steve,
So this is your first trip to the Big Apple, well since that is my
home state, let me give u some tips, how long will u be there? If

Liberty, Take a ride on the subway (a short ride during the day!!!)
Trek up to the top of the Empire State Building, and by all means buy
a hot dog from the vendors on the street, and get a slice of pizza

Raiders sign Duane Starks
Nicholas Hunter - Scout.com
March 23, 2006 at 8:10pm ET
Released by the Patriots on Feb. 25, Duane Starks was signed by the
Oakland Raiders on Thursday.
Cornerback Duane Starks becomes the second former Patriot to join
the Raiders in a week, trailing the signing of Tyrone Poole .
Starks earned a reputation as a big-play cornerback in his first
seven seasons in the NFL, netting 29 interceptions in 93 career
regular season games, but went without an interception in seven
games last year. He also has returned three interceptions for
touchdowns, including one in Super Bowl XXXV.
Starks was originally drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the first
round (10th overall) of the 1998 NFL Draft.
The Raiders also re-signed Grant Irons , a restricted free agent, on
Thursday and signed Chad Slaughter on Wednesday.
Man in black
Raiders would be wise to bring Collins back to huddle
Posted: Wednesday March 22, 2006 12:14PM; Updated: Wednesday March
22, 2006 1:42PM
It's been nearly two weeks since the Oakland Raiders put themselves
in a position where they have no viable starting quarterback, so
here's my advice to them: Bring back Kerry Collins. Do it quickly,
before the Baltimore Ravens start thinking that he might fit nicely
as competition for Kyle Boller. Do it before there are no options
left, as the most promising of those -- Daunte Culpepper -- now
plays in Miami. Do it because it's the only logical move for a team
that rarely makes sensible decisions.
For those who haven't been following the news around the NFL, the
dominoes officially started falling last week. Culpepper landed in
Miami. Drew Brees signed in New Orleans. The Detroit Lions added Jon
Kitna and Josh McCown to their roster. Nearly every team that really
needed a quarterback found somebody to give the job to. Not the
Raiders. They had to cut Collins to get under the salary cap, but
now they have nobody to rely upon in his absence.
They can't give the job to backup Marques Tuiasosopo, because he's
never done anything to prove that he deserves it. They can't hand it
over to second-year signal-caller Andrew Walter, because he's not
ready to have a frustrated Randy Moss jumping down his throat on
every other play. There really isn't anybody left after those two,
which means the Raiders' best hope of landing a replacement involves
the draft and daily prayer.
This is why Collins is their only choice now. Say what you will
about his record in Oakland (8-21 in games he started), his happy
feet last season and that he's really only had three good seasons in
his 12-year career. He at least fits what the Raiders need most at
this point. He knows his teammates. He knows how dysfunctional the
place is. And he's cheap (the man clearly doesn't have many
suitors). What more could team owner Al Davis be searching for at
this frustrating stage?
The reality is that the free-agent market is nearly bare when it
comes to quarterbacks. Aaron Brooks is making a visit to Oakland now
that Brees has Brooks' old job in New Orleans. Joey Harrington is
available. After those two, you're looking at no-names. And let's be
serious here: Brooks and Harrington are both in the same class as
Collins. At least Collins can claim to have played in a Super Bowl.
Collins can also accept where he's at in his career. Those younger
players will certainly be looking to show the world that they aren't
as bad as they seem. They'll be in denial about how bleak their
futures really look and they'll be pressing to prove that their
careers are redeemable. Collins, on the other hand, knows exactly
who he is. He's been a first-round bust, a pariah for an entire city
(Charlotte), a drunk and a Raiders quarterback. Once you've done all
that, you clearly understand when life is handing you a blessing.
Brooks Headed to Oakland
March 22, 2006
The Oakland Raiders have agreed to terms with veteran quarterback
Aaron Brooks.
Raiders.com
The Oakland Raiders have agreed to terms with veteran quarterback
Aaron Brooks.
The 6'4", 220-pound Brooks joins The Team of the Decades after
spending the past six seasons with New Orleans, where he led the
Saints to their only postseason victory following the 2000 season.
Brooks has played in 85 league games, including 82 consecutive
starts - all with the New Orleans Saints who acquired the former
University of Virginia standout via a trade with the Packers in
2000.
Raiders Head Coach Art Shell praised the signing, stating
that "Aaron gives us great depth at the quarterback position and
provides us with a veteran presence."
The 29-year old Brooks leaves New Orleans ranked second in Saints
history in every major passing category, including yards (19,156),
attempts (2,771), completions (1,563), touchdowns (120) and passer
rating (79.7).
Aaron Brooks Career Summary
Has completed 1,563 of 2,771 pass attempts for 19,156 yards, 120
touchdowns and 84 interceptions since entering the NFL with the
Green Bay Packers in 1999.
Threw for a career-best 3,832 yards in 2001.
In 2002, tossed a career-high 27 touchdown passes. In 2003, he
notched a three-to-one touchdown-to-interception ratio with 24 TD
passes against just eight interceptions.
Has also proven to be a very mobile quarterback during his career
logging 1,410 yards on 340 carries, with 13 rushing touchdowns.
Ranked first in club history with 28 regular season games with 250
or more yards passing.
In 2003, Brooks set the Saints' single season passing mark with
3,832 yards. In 2004, he set the club record for most completions in
a single game with 34. Brooks completed 240 of 431 pass attempts for
2,882 yards and 13 TDs in 13 games during the 2005 campaign with New
Orleans.
Accounted for four of the top seven single season passing
performances in Saints history. In 2000, he set the club record for
passing yards in a single game with 441 against the Denver Broncos.
Was the only quarterback in Saints history to throw for 3,500 yards
in four straight seasons, and to throw for more than 20 touchdowns
in four straight years.
Well now that pepper and brees are taken, who is left? Do we have a
shot at Leinhart/Young? i think we will have to do some wheelin and
deelin! To get that position filled before camp opens.

The CBA extension is highlighted by the following:

Mercury-News, the Raiders have decided NOT to put the franchise tag on CB
Charles Woodson, thus pretty much ending his career in Sliver & Black. The
only thing that would change that would be Woodson signing with the Raiders
by March 2nd. Woodson can officially become a free agent on March 3rd.
Am I surprised? NO! The Raiders do have a good young secondary, & did
begin to play better by season's end. Defensive help is always needed,
especially if you have the 27th ranked defense, which they have.
It looks like Art Shell is already making his presence felt. He has
already hired Jackie Slater & Irv Eatman to coach the O-line, Daryl Sims to
coach the D-line, & Tom Walsh to be offensive coordinator. Walsh was a
Raiders assistant from 1982-94, the last 6 years during Shell's 1st tenure
as head coach.
Guess we'll see all the Woodson jerseys on sale soon...............*LOL*

It is no surprise that the Oakland is in the market for another quarterback after seeing disappointment at the position
over the last few years. Could a strong-armed quarterback from UAB be an answer?
The NFL Draft reaches every corner of the world and a quarterback out of UAB is no longer a question mark but a potential marquee name. And after setting school records, Darrell Hackney has garnered plenty of interest at the next level from scouts and coaches.
Hackney, who finished as the schools all-time leading passer with 9,886 yards and 71 touchdown passes, was also named the first-team quarterback on the 2005 All-Conference USA team.
The Atlanta, Ga., native threw for 3,180 yards and 22 TDs during his stellar senior campaign, which also saw him throw for 300 or more yards on four different occasions - showing the world that he could compete without wide receiver Roddy White, a first round pick last year.
Hackney passed for 3,070
yards and 26 TDs in 2004, and for 1,659 yards in 2003 and 1,977 and 14 TDs as a freshman in 2002.
His career passing total of 9,886 yards ranks fourth all-time on the C-USA list, and his 71 TD passes is the sixth highest total in conference history.
We caught up with Hackney and spoke to him about his ability, what the Senior Bowl meant to him and being himself.
What's left to say Art Shell has got it, always did, I say go wit da flow and take this Man and OUR RAIDERS to da SUPER-BOWL, and get back to OUR GLORY-DAYS......................

A familiar face would do wonders for the Raiders
By Mark Purdy
Mercury News
Al Davis and his football people have not requested my assistance this week. Can't say I blame them. I'm often wrong when I write about the Raiders.
For instance, last August I predicted they would have at least a .500 record and perhaps challenge for a playoff spot. I believed that with Randy Moss, the Raiders' offense would be wild, woolly and wonderful.
Heavens to Norv, was I mistaken. Which is why Norv Turner is now the team's ex-coach. I don't expect the Raiders to consult me about his replacement. But let's say they did. I would simply offer two words of advice. Two large, impressive, profound and sensible words:
1. Art.
2. Shell.
Citizens of the Raider Nation need no introduction to Shell. He was a Hall of Fame tackle with the team from 1968 to 1982. Then, as the Raiders' head coach, he took the team to three playoff appearances from 1989 to 1994.
To me, it seems like a no-brainer. After striking out with the gravitas-challenged Bill Callahan and Turner, the Raiders need a front man who commands respect and reminds people that the Raiders once stood for something special.
Also, Davis surely has learned that hiring an X's-and-O's drone (Turner) or a soul-less technician (Callahan) as a head coach does not work in today's NFL. The preferred role model is a leader who can manage his assistants and make the players pay attention every day when he stands in front of the room.
Sound like anyone you know? Shell should be the first person Davis talks to about the Raiders' coaching vacancy.
Shell is open to that conversation. He currently works in the NFL office as a senior vice president, assisting Paul Tagliabue on operational matters. Out of respect to the commissioner, Shell will not publicly campaign for another job. But his agent, Danny More, said Wednesday that Shell would certainly be available for a conversation with Davis.
``The gist of Art's feelings,'' More said, ``is that if Al Davis wants to discuss anything about anything, Art Shell will meet with Al Davis.''
But will that meeting take place?
In a conference call after Turner's dismissal, Davis was vague about his plans for a coaching search. The Raiders' owner indicated that candidates will be vetted by Mike Lombardi, the team's senior personnel executive. When those candidates ``meet certain criteria,'' Davis said, he will conduct his own interviews.
With all due respect to Lombardi, if there is one man who should immediately pass ``go'' and sit down with Davis, it's Shell. This is a crucial time in Raiders history. These two men need to have a brutal, honest face-to-face. Their meeting should not include any other Raiders executives, or Randy Moss, or Jim Otto, or Shell's agent. Even the agent says so.
``At the level of the relationship that Art Shell has enjoyed with Al Davis over the years, there need to be no other voices in the room if they're going to talk about anything,'' More said. ``These two people spent 26 years together. They don't need any outside noise.''
Right about here, you are probably asking, ``Why should the Raiders go with a retread such as Shell instead of finding a fresh face?'' Or it might be something even more cynical: ``Why would anyone want to be the Raiders' coach?''
Neither question is stupid. The job is a unique and demanding animal. Davis does not allow his coach to make many -- some say any -- personnel decisions. Davis also likes to have input on overall strategic philosophy. He's also very tough on his coaches, upbraiding them after defeats.
Davis' logic is that it worked that way when the team was winning three Super Bowls, so it should still work. You can argue with that, but you will lose the argument. Davis is the boss.
There aren't many people equipped to handle those conditions. Shell already has. He has the stature to work with Davis on hiring assistants, to have personnel input, to implement team policies.
And if Shell doesn't get the job, who will? Davis said Tuesday that he doesn't want to wait for a winning team to develop over three or four seasons. And he didn't sound excited about allowing a young head coach to develop. The last fresh face Davis hired was Jon Gruden, who learned to handle the Raiders' weirdness well, but only after two 8-8 seasons.
In retrospect, Shell's win-loss record of 54-38 with the Raiders is just as impressive as Gruden's mark of 38-26. And former Raiders receiver Tim Brown has said that the only two head coaches who had full command of the locker room on a consistent basis were Shell and Gruden.
It's a mystery why no other NFL team ever hired Shell as a head coach, especially since other second-timers (Tony Dungy, Joe Gibbs, Dick Vermeil) have done relatively well. There's no reason Davis should be hesitant to take the chance.
``It still goes back to the base issue,'' More said. ``Al loves to talk about the history of the Raiders. The winningest decade of the Raiders was the '70s. The second-most winning decade was the '80s. Well, who was the constant through that period, as a player and then as a coach? Art Shell.''
Davis said the other day that he goes with his ``gut instinct'' when hiring coaches. His instinct once told him Shell was the right move. Why not again?

It's just to bad the headline does not read; " Al Davis relieved as Owner"
That is the number one ill the Raiders suffer and until he lets the Coach, Coach, the Raiders will struggle.
What we need is another "Madden", some to stand up to Davis and tell him to go to the Sky box and watch!
I'm a die hard Raider fan, have been for 33 years and I'm so tired of everyone giving me a bad time when ever I put on my Raiders stuff! I would really like to have a winning season, sad part is, we have the team to Goooo ALlllll The Wayyyyy!
To AL DAVIS:
3 Coach's in 5 years, what's that say dude, it's either you or them..
WAKE UP!!!

Raiders bench Collins, will start Tuiasosopo against Jets
December 7, 2005
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) -- Marques Tuiasosopo will start at quarterback
for the Oakland Raiders, who benched regular Kerry Collins.
With no postseason to play for, the Raiders (4-8) are casting an eye
toward the future. Oakland coach Norv Turner gave Tuiasosopo the nod
on Wednesday and announced that he will start Sunday on the road
against the New York Jets.
"It means a lot," said Tuiasosopo, whose lone NFL start came in 2003.
"I am excited to get out and play and, with the rest of these guys in
the locker room, find a way to win a ballgame this week. That's what I
am most excited about."
Tuiasosopo, a second-round pick in 2001, has played in just eight NFL
games.
Turner hinted earlier in the week a change might be made. Collins has
the third-most passing yards in the league this season but has
generated just four wins for the Raiders, who were eliminated from
playoff contention with last week's loss to San Diego.
Collins played well early in the season but has struggled the last
month. After throwing just one interception in Oakland's first six
games, Collins has been picked off seven times in four weeks.
Despite several offseason moves, including the acquisitions of wide
receiver Randy Moss and running back LaMont Jordan, the Raiders have
been a disappointment on offense this year. Oakland will miss the
playoffs for the third straight season after playing in the 2002 Super
Bowl.
Collins, signed as a free agent before last season, has taken the
brunt of criticism for the Raiders' poor record. In each of Oakland's
previous three home games the quarterback was booed heavily by fans,
who repeatedly chanted for Turner to put Tuiasosopo in the lineup.
"I'm not happy about it," said Collins, who will be Oakland's No. 2
quarterback against the Jets. "I feel like this is my team. I feel
like I give us the best chance to win Sunday. ... Having said that, I
respect what Norv decided to do and I'll help Tui any way I can.
Tuiasosopo's only NFL start was two years ago against the Detroit
Lions. He filled in for injured Rich Gannon, but that outing lasted
less than a half because Tuiasosopo sustained a season-ending injury
to his left knee.
Turner said Wednesday that this move was made to spark Oakland's
struggling offense and to get an extended look at Tuiasosopo.
"Kerry hasn't performed as well as I'd like," Turner said. "There's
things he knows he can do better, things I know he can do better. We
need to see Tui play. Where we are right now in terms of the things
we're doing best on offense and where we're struggling, I think Tui
can help us there with his movement."
Tuiasosopo has one year remaining on the contract he originally signed
as a rookie and is eligible for free agency in 2007. Collins is
earning the veteran's minimum salary this season but will be due
nearly $12.9 million in base pay, roster bonus and incentives next
season if he remains in Oakland.
"I am going to just go out and play and hopefully my play will do all
the talking," Tuiasosopo said. "I am not worried about the future now.
I am worried about this weekend and getting ready and helping this
team by having the best chance of winning."
